First Impressions of the Montreal REM 🇨🇦 (Canada's Newest Metro System)

- I was invited to ride the Montreal REM (Réseau express métropolitain) on July 28th, 2023 - just before it was opened to the general public. This allowed me to film in the brand new train and stations without large crowds of people. I hope you enjoy this video... exciting times for Montreal :)
Congratulations to Montreal on the opening of the first phase of the REM! The trains look great! 😊 Greetings from Singapore!
Like the Alstom metros in Singapore, they are Metropolis.😉
@@Lodai974 Yes!
Uh, it's not Montreal, it's with the big taxpayers' taxes that this can take place.
It was the longest gap between stations because they will open a station in between later. 😊
I recorded 93km/h today with Waze when trying it today!
craazy. i think the Vancouver skytrain only goes at like 60 km/h
and this along the Highway… Imaging being stuck in traffic there with a train shooting by every few minutes ;)
@@kailahmann1823 LOL! I don't think they need to advertise lol.
@@KyleRuggles yep, already read that - they probably need to buy much bigger trains very soon :)
@@disneyplay4China hsr 350 km/jam
I used to live in the St-Henri neighbourhood in Montreal, and I moved to the south shore 2 years ago, near the Panama REM Station. I work in downtown Montreal, and this is a game-changer! I'm so excited the REM is now here.
Bravo aux initiateurs, architectes, ingénieurs et bâtisseurs de ce nouveau système de transport complètement autonome, le REM, témoignant encore une fois du génie et savoir-faire québécois !
Awesome system! Best from Switzerland: Mad!
😮😮😮Nice!!! 🚉.... I love your videos Dan 🙂👍🏻. Greetings from México.
I've been in this city for over 7 years now and had no idea we had that
This is one thing I actually applaud Montreal for. Genuine great improvement
4:25 the spped limit on the Samuel-de-Champlain bridge is 80km/h, so my guess is the train is going about 80-100km/h
You need to consider that most people are speeding at 100km/h, so the train is fast
😂🤷🏾♀️
@@sammexpExcept for High Speed Railway, any train going below 140 km/hr is considered not fast!
Read that the top speed of the REM is 100km/h.
@@Rysk12 I'm pretty sure it's 120, at least that's the speed it can go at.
This is so amazing. Montreal is my favourite city in the whole world so I'm so happy to see it get such a stunning transit system. Next time I visit I can't wait to ride all of the R.
Went on it today was a lot of fun I work in the building to the left at Du Quartier. Its a new development called City Solar. Will be taking this every day now for my commute can't wait.
Nice video! The REM is going to change Montreal in many ways. Let's just hope it is more reliable than the Ottawa LRT 🙂
Ha, just what I was thinking! I have no doubt it will be much better that the Ottawa LRT.
Bad choice in trains, unfortunately.
First day in actual service and there was a downtime of 30 minutes in morning rush hour because of 'technical reasons'. Not a good start.
@@OpCzar 1 hour actually.
the ottawa NO-Train
I’m a transit nerd too. I’ve been to many places in the world. But this time I’m giga-nerd because I live 2km from station Du Quartier of the REM. I’m really hyper about it . 😂 Thanks for the video!
At 0:57, I'm the person walking with a blue top lol. I was on the first train you took from central station, what a coincidence!
So happy Dan you are back to Montreal ♥️ always loving your videos, merci pour le partage 😉☀️
Thanks
@@thoughtsontravelandlife 👍😊
Fun fact: the woman who does the voice for the REM is the daughter of the woman who did the voice for the Metro!
This is so true about when you exit an airport and the transit if very accessible tells you a lot about the city
but it took montreal forever to make it happend but yea i know its better late then never
Always love randomly venturing across new channels. Happy to have been Like #900 and a new sub to the channel. Cheers Dan!
Wait until you see the dump that is Toronto's Eglinton LRT line, not only are a lot of the stations cheaply made but the entire line will be obsolete and over capacity upon day 1 of it opening... Rob Ford was right all along, it should have been a subway and it would have been cheaper in the end.
Cool video, thank you! In Toronto we already have UP Express, which goes from the Union Station directly to Airport in only 25 minutes. It maybe not as new as R.E.M. train, but inside much more comfortable - soft chairs and the tables.
Nothing is aesthetic and quality in Toronto
@@jeanbolduc5818 I would say - in opposite, but each one with their opinion. The Toronto, simply being center of the Canada for everything.
Huge shoutout to Montreal and the development team behind REM. Its so well executed, both Ottawa and Toronto have a lot to learn from Montreal about how to integrate a modern transit system.
Thanks!
Thank you for the tour! I can't wait to be able to get around the island and the surrounding areas more easily!
It was nice to meet you! Im not a transit nerd... but i am a Montréal Nerd! :)
Lines on the glass help birds avoid flying into them by blocking reflections.
We were overdue for an upgrade to transit.
Modern city with the only commute to the airport being a single bus lmao.
the marks on the glass could also be for birds to avoid collisions
I’m learning French and moving to Montreal. Love the white seats.
Congratulations Montreal. Well done! I really like the look of the trains and the stations. It's also good to see them use the additional security platform doors. Is this train considered heavy rail like a subway or a light rail line?
However, there is one thing I didn't see and that was any artwork within the stations.
Los Angeles Metro recently opened three new light rail stations and there is some wonderful artwork that is permanently part of all three stations. Though LA's Metro has a history of including artwork on their stations.
Hopefully that is to come. I'm assuming their priority was to get the trains and stations running technically first.
Its considered light rail, I believe. But automation means that the number of trainset per hour is shortened. Total number of passengers per hour per direction approaches the capacity of the the main line. During offhours, they will only use 2 car trainsets. During busy times, using 2 - 2 car trainsets, ie 4 cars.
@@AlbertMark-nb9zo Cool, thanks
It's referred to as "light metro". It's a fully grade-separated metro, (unlike light rail), however it uses smaller trains and longer station spacing than a typical subway/metro.
@@sprocketspritz Thanks. That seems similar to the Green line in Los Angeles.
Oh I'm a transit nerd. Thanks for the video!
I was actually waiting for your vidéo about REM))
Yay! Thank you for mentioning the sky train in Vancouver!
Waiting dock you could see lights above the doors before getting in, those will indicate the entrance that have more passenger room so you can pick which one to get in from.
I like your conclusion ... So true ... Never forget ... You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.
Great video, Dan. I love seeing the Montreal ones. I can't wait to use that extension from the airport when it opens.
I'm surprised there are no english labels or announcments on the train or the stations. I know this is the francophone part of Canada, but thought English would still be present in some form.
I guess they don’t welcome international tourists! Misplaced arrogance!
U mean fancophile
Thanks for the ride, Dan. I'll be sure to try it in the next few days.
Hello Dan, I hope you are doing well. First of all, thank you for giving us the opportunity to know Montreal from afar. Through all your great videos. It's a great work you are doing for the world.
Danke dir.👏🏼
Great video - pleasure meeting you at the event!
Nice to meet you too :)
I tried it this morning, was great.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the video 😊
I'm just really anxious to see how good it will really perform during rush hour considering all buses from most of the south shore will now end at Panama station in order to go downtown 🤦♀️
We'll have to see but it'll have a lot of capacity and good frequency.
great job!
The random marks on the glass are also there so the birds so the DONT fly into the glass.
Very exciting!
Good video....short and to the point!😊❤🎉
so exciting, as a non local who only stays in downtown area, where could this take me to check out when i come again?
8 minutes a train isn't too bad. I assume they'll ramp things up in the future? Vancouver can do 90 second intervals, and since REM uses similar tech, it can probably do the same.
Wow the REM is pretty nice
Sounds much quieter than the metro as far as I can tell
It's not.
Are they working on the network North through Mont-Royal? (The line that used to go to Deux-Montagnes?). I hope they finish that soon...
Interesting that this line is not connected to the Barri-UQAM station.
Nice video. I hope to ride the Montreal REM someday.
Why? It's just an expensive train that they force people to take by cancelling bus routes.
This reminds me of the metro in Ningbo on the two original lines.
I was in Copenhagen last week and their metro is almost identical as the REM (stations and wagons) I think it was constructed (finished) in 2019
Ce système de métro est très avancé
love it :)
Nice Metro. I hope Montrealers will love it. I don’t know which day it is. How long after opening and what day of the week? When the fourth line was opened in Budapest at the end of March 2014, I discovered the line the following weekend. There was a crowd. Everyone wanted to see it. Of course, after the fortnight the traffic dropped, but since then it has exceeded the two hundered thousand passangers per day. I see, Budapest is not Montreal, but this lovable city is still the closest to it in the North America.
Montréal does have a more European feel and vibe to it compared to Toronto which is a true North American city
Exactly the same in Montreal . there was a huge crowd this weekend and it was for free.😃
@@arthurlenko9598 I am glad. So good to watch videos about Montreal. The bicycle, the bakery culture. Public transport, urbanity. I hope Montreal will successfully develop the possibility of becoming independent from the car. Since your video, I've watched other videos about REM and indeed, there were crowds in one or the other.
@@istvanpeterkovacs730 This is not my video i only watched it and posted a comment.i hope you come here someday and enjoy the city.
@@arthurlenko9598 Sorry. I missed it. Yes, I hope too, I will enjoy Montreal and Québec (there is é vowel in Hungarian) city not far future.
As Korean who’ve been to Montreal in summer of 2015, I’m surprised to see the handles on the trains
Looks a lot like the Elizabeth Line
It's mind-boggling that this didn't already exist in Montréal but it's good to know that we're catching up with other metropolitan cities. Good video, the first one to show that there's Wi-Fi 👍
There's a whole subway system..
@@montrealgoalie Yes but only 1 hr long bus rides available from Brossard or Deux-Montagnes to Montréal
@@Dandelion296 They had the train going to 2 Montages, now it will be the REM every 5 minutes and 2 1/2 minutes at rush hours instead of the 30 minutes before.
catching up ? lol
That sound the doors made when they opened was unearthly
Thanks for the ride. One thing you didn't mention is pricing. How much does it cost to use it. Tx
Nice View! That French female announcement sounds like Montreal Metro. Platform screen doors sound like Doha Metro in Qatar. Enjoy!
Good ear! The announcements on the REM are made by the daughter of the woman who makes the announcements on the Metro.
@@marcgauthier6318 Caroline Dhavernas est la fille de Michèle Deslauriers, la voix du Métro de Montréal depuis 2003.
looks really nice :)
Very nice video. Subscribed. Peter.
Great video! I went to take it on Saturday but I have an aversion to crowds and lining up around the block outside.. lol.. I'm patient.
I only hope they expand to the west island, it seems Anglo areas get less attention, it just seems the west island including the HUGE hydro outage we had, like ya know? Ugh.. We'll see if they decide to go through with it, I think?
your comments are full of ignorance and racism. anglophones are evrywhere in Montreal and the priviledged minority in Quebec. Fremch canadians outside Quebec are treated as second class citizens .
When did you get a new channel? I totally stubbled across this by accident.
It's been here for a couple of years. It's a more personal look at my life, trying things out, and experimenting with video ideas.
Is it me or the warning sound for the doors sound like a machine in Mcdo lol
The whistling sound that we can hear during your video is considered a defect that they are going to fix.
It sucks. Twice broken down in a few days
The train TGV already exist in Morocco so i don't think its a big lux to have a train in Montreal . I am grateful but ITS ABOUT TIME!
It’s not a TGV.
Morocco has nothing to teach to the world ... very rude people
Unfortunately, the REM has its first stall on the first official day! I will keep taking my car to go to Montreal…
REM vas finir comme le metro de montreal plien de pannes depuis 2 jours ! bravo ! combien de millards in taxes money again !
tu n as qu a prendre ton vélo .. chialeux
Very similar to Sydney Metro
love the REM can't wait to try it still disapointed NIMBY messed up REM de l'est
For the métro part IT be and extantion
The real question is, do they play REM on the REM?
I don't see @DiscoverMontreal in the comments section 🤔
1:04 ...everything's in French. Oh yeah!
Meanwhile, Eglington LRT is being built in the next 100 years 😂
Did you trie it at the front without drivers?
How much cost it for a travel?
The airport connection is 4 years away: 2027.
Thanks. What's the cost?
6.9 billions all included for 69KM
Nice. What is the fare?
Down load a speedometer app you can see how fast it travels.
Neat idea, I didn't think of that
Somebody did so on another video I saw. The top speed was 92 km/h.
Dude, how tall are you? You had to duck when entereing the train.
Don't they speak English too, or is it only French in Montreal and Quebec?
Modern station? You must be joking!
Damn I left Montreal 5 months ago😢
It will be here when you get back!
You are so cute
Im cute too
The REM line that will connect to the Montreal Trudeau Airport is still about 5 years away unfortunately.
Yeah and Trudeau is why, the federal government took 5 years to finalize their deal with the airport, the tunnel to the airport has been finished since last year, but no work could start at the airport until they had the signature form Ottawa, so a good 5 years delay because of incompetence.
@@acarriere8534 Of course, Trudeau is the one and only person working on EVERYTHING at the Federal government. Come on. You need to learn how a government works, friend.
It's still fast... Five years it's nothing to build something big like that... That's tomorrow
@@klinker321 Vancouver’s first SkyTrain line was built in 3 years and 9 months from start to finish, between March 1982 and December 1985.
💙
Glad to see tall persons working their way through. The sad part of these new doors is the mandatory atrocious sound they have to put.
no more express bus?
J'ai pris le REM mais chose étrange ... Pas de tourniquet !? Ils vont les installer plus tard parait-il ...
The New Travel???
Cars are faster than the Rem
Went there. Saw the line up. Turned around. Not for me. Not today.
Wait maybe a week, that’s what I’ll do.
@@kalron0780 well judging from the Laval metro extension, the first week it got completely insane and it never stopped since then, so much so that in the morning there is never any room for the people in Montreal to get into the metro, they have to wait sometimes 3 or 4 metros to get in.
1. Why is it 4 stop long ?
2. Why are the only people taking it influencers ?
I can't speak for influencers, but I'm sure many other Montrealers and Quebecers (and I'm sure many other Canadians and other Americans and visitors from around the world [🌎] who happened to be in Montréal) are singing the praises 🎶 🎵 of the brand new REM (not the rock band) light metro train and system.
lol
This is a partial opening of the line. The other branches will open over the following 4 years.
There are also probably reserves to build other stations online.
As for the fact that they were guests, that was the case on Friday...but on weekends it was open to all and free, within the limit of the available load.
