after this maybe there will be a video with tittle "R5 mk 2, yes i'm wrong ..." because up to this point, no valid information for R5 mk 2, all just rumour. But ... even did like what you said, not everyone is needs the same with what you needs ... to this day, myself, 1080p 60 or 1080p 24 still my fav option, and CLOG 1 still use it and no problem.
You’re right not every one needs the same thing. I make a point of that in this video as well. I always will say go with works for you. I’m just given my reason why I maybe looking else where
I dunno seems the Pyxis will require a lot of extra building blocks to be a usable cinema camera and the R5C can shoot open gate for anamorphic... so we'll see I guess
R5C does not shoot open gate. It can but as of now canon hasn’t implemented it. While yes the Pyxis required more things to get it “usable” that’s the point of a “box camera”. They are the master PCs of the film world. You’re suppose to build it how you want. And by doing that I can add accessories that may Cg my filming style. Things I personally would do with an R5C anyway.
Did I understand your point correctly? Your lack of interest in what's next for Canon has to do with your shooting style and requirement to support Open Gate for your anamorphic acquisition? If I understood correctly, your gear options have narrowed for sure.
Hi Buddy. It's a bit more than that, but that does play a good portion in my current point of view. It's more of narrowing gear options as well as requirements I use to have that no longer are relevant. Autofocus and Dynamic Range for example, are either not relevant feature to me or their importance has diminished greatly. DJI's new Focus System to me is set to be better than any AF that is internal to camera based on the laser depth AI technology, but more importantly it's an AF system that actually gives you full control without disengaging the AF mode, which as of now no camera has been able to achieve internally. It also isn't reliant on using a specific mount or specific set of lenses (photo lenses in this case), meaning my options as a filmmaker grows significantly while still maintaining the workflow of a small one man band. So which company's AF system is good or what AF technology is in their cameras, no longer interests me because of that. Then I mentioned several times my dismay in the over emphasizing on the stated number of what a camera's dynamic range, instead of the more important things like how does the highlights and shadows rolloff behave in a professional workflow. Long story short dynamic range is not as big of a deal to me because of the workflow in Resolve and the easy accessibility of high quality lights makes this feature not as important. because of this I look to things that allow me to expand my creativity the most. Using the full sensor readout (3:2 for most cases) for a wide range of lens options, multiple aspect ratio delivery (even 3:2 delivery on UA-cam) has changed how I view images as well as how I compose my shots to take the most advantage of the whole image. There's a unique form a filmmaking that I've grown to love because I have been given the chance to see a full frame using 3:2 and it's now very noticeable when it's absent. I've also waned over time the Color science Canon has been given us in their R line of cameras. They are not bad by any means and that's not what I'm saying, but After playing with Kinefinity and Blackmagic, when I pull up a canon shot, I don't get the same feeling of wow that I do with those cameras. Again personal taste, which is individually something everyone has to look inward to decide what's best for them. Finally I think the biggest thing is my workflow has grown over the years, now my shoots involve bigger teams, with more professional I/O ports (SDI, Timecode, multiple video outputs) and needing a smoother transition from Production to post, The R line of cameras (currently obviously RF version of the C500 and C300 could change this) doesn't fit this need. I know this is a long response, but I guess I wanted to make clear it's not just my shooting style and Open Gate support but also rapidly changing industry that has democratized areas that use to be key needs for a camera and my growth as a filmmaker in general. Hope that answers your question my friend! And I can't wait to enjoy Ireland like you did😁
I love Canon. I love the image and usability. We never see I'm leaving Sony videos. I am not a fan of the Sony image. We only get Canon gets me mad I'm leaving... all good. Your choice. I'd rather have a camera that I'd use for 4 years rather than 4 slightly different cameras I'd use for 1 year. My C70's and R5c get firmware updates all the time. It's like getting a new camera without the cost. Canon just doesn't play the flood the market with minor change game. I am certain that what is coming is gonna be smokin!!!
And you will never see me say "I'm leaving sony" BECASUE I DON'T HAVE A SONY 🤣. Also never said I'm mad at Canon, again I think you miss the point that this wasn't a Canon bashing video, instead just how the industry has changed things as well as how my own perspective of filmmaking has changed. I just go with the camera that works for me.
I agree with you, James. Logically, how can one ‘on sensor’ AF system ever be better that a dedicated LIDAR system? They’re only on the 2nd/3rd generation of LIDAR and it’s already excellent. Plus all the cine, vintage and anamorphic options it opens up. It will extend our cameras’ lives significantly and make older cameras relevant again. I’m sure they will constantly add new features too. I will be adding the focus pro to my S1H and BMCC6K and using all my old lenses. Amazing…

My answer would still be the same because those features, while great, don't address my needs and wants (Open Gate, great workflow in resolve, and a new color science.) Again I am not saying these cameras are not going to be great or worth their price, I am just saying so far they are not doing it for me.

If the R5 Mark II and whatever other camera they announce this month doesn't record in Open Gate, I will be so incredibly disappointed. I go as far as saying that I would be as EQUALLY disappointed that we're even asked to film vertical content at all. haha Our editor has made great use of landscape-filmed content by creating top/bottom graphic borders with the company logos we're working for, space for subtitles, etc. Then we jump back to vertically filmed B-Roll or crops...it works well. BUT, it would be even better if we just had that additional video information to begin with. I currently only own one camera that shoots in open gate, and that's the Fujifilm X-S20. I wouldn't say it's a camera we would like to bring to a production set, seeing that I have a C70 and a pair of R3 bodies to shoot with, but the trend is to at least offer open gate in 24/30p video. It would be the absolute greatest thing since sliced bread if any of these new cameras shot open gate at 60fps...I would honestly consider investing in two cameras that could do that and ONLY film B-Roll that way. To my knowledge, nobody is offer that yet except for GoPro? haha Now...I have to say it, James....you're really missing out on the RF gravy train with the RF 24-105 f/2.8L IS USM. A lens so truly magnificent, so exceptional to work with that I'm actually considering a second one! Seriously! I actually don't want to shoot video with a camera that doesn't have it! haha
Totally agree. Shooting interiors for hotels, 60p open gate would be a game changer. The extra height for cropping vertically is incredibly useful for shooting rooms. Even just the ability to shift the image up or down while maintaining the same position is useful as well
While I maybe missing out on the 25-105. Been saying it’s an amazing lens, however The ability to just use any lens I want with a camera that has the features I need/want is a more desirable choice for me.
