Man, I’ve got a ride one of these bikes ..I’ve been running the Jones H bars on my converted rode bikes for years, but I have never ridden an actual Jones Bike. This is something on my bucket list.❤ I have spoke with him on the phone over the years. He is a very intelligent nice man.
Got TRP Spyke mechanical brakes on my LWB, easy maintenance and with 203 and 180 rotors they slow me down no issues even when loaded with bikepacking gear.
I love all bikes of all types and love riding my jones Electric LWB HD-E. Jeff you are such a thoughtful bike designer. Thank you for sharing your philosophy, it's refreshing to hear the justification for your design and rationale for how your spec your bikes in an industry full of marketing. Thanks for educating us and providing the details for why you do what you do.
Some cool news on battery tech -- Amprius has a battery using silicon nano-wires and anodes. The point is that it can charge to 80% in 6 minutes, and the energy density is 500Wh/kg, 1300Wh/liter. This is double or better of what Teslas use. It's only a 5V chemistry, but 10 smaller cells in series (easier to do because of better conductivity of the nanowires) would be, as they say, a game-changer. :)
Wow! This looks amazing and as always, Jones bikes are in a league of their own. Having this bike and choice of components described by you is very nice and shows that you have put so much importance into this build. Honesty, you where ahead of your time with the 29 mid plus and now even further ahead with all the details you put into this build. Thanks, I’ll be sure to consider a Jones for my next purchase
Just took my SWB out for a ride…I love this bike. I can only imagine what a magnificent beast the LWB is! And that is the coolest color in the known universe.
Oh! Man! Look at these beauties! I got my Jones used late last spring. It's a Plus LWB in medium. It feels a bit large for me, but I drive it comfortably just the same. Wouldn't part with it for the world! My other two Surly bikes (a Pugsley and a Karate Monkey) just collect dust these days. Trying to sell them and get more money for my next Jones! But, hey, where's the Truss Fork in this video? Mine has the Truss Fork. Love it. Jones is the best bike I have ever owned. Nothing else comes close.
Love this and the improvements you've made! The purple color has me drooling 😍 The one complaint I had about my Jones LWB complete V1 was the brakes, so I'm super excited to see Maguras on this version.
Fantastic information. Now I totally get the through axel advantage. The tier information was also …..not what I would have assumed. Kind of counterintuitive! But I get it. I once test rode a bike with a Jones Loop bar. It was really unforgettable. At 66 I think will go for the Jones Bike… because the experience in the design will keep me rolling for as long as I possibly can with osteoarthritis and a fully torn rotator cuff that could not be fixed.
Purple is sweet. Funny to see full length stems when Surly is cutting them from the factory (big mistake) now apparently. Want to know the perfect bike, go with Jones (or maybe Yeti if you are into the whole dodging trees at 30mph)
You really put together a perfect hardware kit with the cassette heavier chain, derailleur and shifter, Even the seat and the H-bar, but honestly the whole Jones bike you put together looks perfect! Such a proper bike you could ride all day
Nice work, Jeff! Love your stuff! My buddy Gavin was so jealous of my LWB plus, version 1, that he went and got himself a tan version 2. He's always rubbing it in about how great his kickstand is... Can you make a kickstand adapter plate for the first version? Keep up the great work! One of these days I'm going to get the beautiful truss fork!
Interesting to see how you spec the bike. I really like that you shared. However I feel like it has a some hipster driven marketing behind some elements and some poor choices in the name of durability. I know a lot of people is cold sweating about hidraulic brakes, but over the years they proven even more reliable than the always maintain hungry cable brakes. Shimano brakes are the most easy to work with and most durable option rise above every one on the market, because of mineral oil, manufacturing tolerances at cheap price and world wide spread so part are everywhere. Unbeatable by an other company. Durabilitywise Magura is great (bc of mineral oil), however their levers are not so great. The main body is made of plastic and around the main pivot there are so little material, that they have significant amount of chance to brake. Calipers are great, a ton of power. If you brake the lever, you can make it work with a Shimano one. Cable vs fluid. It's 2023, even on the remotes places you can find someone who is familiar with this "hightech". But moreover is well proven by the time fluid based brakes are realiable as hell. Those Alhonga brakes are really low end stuff. Cable operated disc brakes are the creation of the devil, should have died out years ago. A Shimano mt200 set would be the same price with a set and forget feature in mind. Avid BB7s are good but why bother with them when you can get Shimano mt200 cheaper. I get the points with the levers, but to set up like that is requires more skill from an average user that aligning the hidraulic calipers right after a YT tutorial. Compressionless housing is great, especially on the rear. Someone who is doing a lot of biking will spend more time adjusting mechanical brakes than hidraulic. I'd rather spec and rebrand same other chineese crank set with SRAM sprocket interface and 24mm Shimano compatible spindle. This way you can keep the easy and well spread "GXP" style mounting with a more durable bearing system. Smaller diameter spindle means more bearing at BSA. Sram bearing system can be a pain if have a not so perfect bottombracket on the frame. The hardend steel bearing race on soft aluminium is not a good combination. On the Simano style system, you have a steel axle, sitting on polimer bushings and than the larger bearings. If you have failiure at the crankset, you will loose the cheap part, the bb and not a pricy part the crankset (axle). 9 speed is really just taste of choice and price. You can buy 10 or 11 speed wide range stuff to please people who prefer closer range of the gears to maintain cadence. Chain is another interesting thing. What really does matter at durabilty, what kind material the used and with what surface treatment. (Ex. M9100, XTR chain will easly out perform M6100 chain by 6-8 times, same geometrical construction but way better materials on the top. This is extremely important on ebike application when the motor unit performs larger torq from 0 rpm than most of our cars.) At lower price you can't get any fancy stuff. Nickeling the outer plates are mainly against rust. Hardening the rollers, pins and make them slick gives the chain durablity. I wouldn't simplify this topic down just to bare outer plate thickness. In the future If you will need durability take a look arond the upcoming CUES from Shimano.
Want to go box 9 on my hd/e as the sram 12 spd is just too much. A thicker chain would be an awesome bonus. Have the hd/e lwb and analog lwb, but that swb in teal looks totally killer. Me want one.
Gorgeous bike. I would love to have a purple one but it's just impossible to get one in Germany or West Europe. It would definitely be my one bike to rule them all...
I would love the frame with the eccentric BB so I could build a SS. The only issue is that I have all SS wheels with SS specific 142 hubs that I want to keep using and not have to retrofit hardware to make it work.
I was intrigued until I saw the price and then my reaction was, $3000 for a bike that, with the exception of the drive train, has nothing but Jones branded components? And Box is really nothing to brag about, if at least it was Microshift Advent X. Maybe I'm being unrealistic, but I was thinking sub $2000 before I went to the Jones website and saw the actual price.
Some call the JONES "kool aid" - well, it's darn good tasting kool aid. The box drivetrain has been stellar here. I did put a raceface turbine up front and have been running a 38 front with the 9 speed box for a good while now. It has been BULLET PROOF. (LWB Complete v1 LARGE..added the truss fork and LOVE IT.)
I just started looking into the Jones bike. I had a set of the Jones bars on my last bike and liked it. Not sure about the 9-speed though. Not sure how much of difference that will make after riding a 12-speed for quite awhile.
Recently I bought Jones handlebar and now I have got the Jones grips too. My question is, if I have to put the bike upside down what protection should I have for Handlebars so that it does not get scratches.
Since this bike has a slacker effective seat tube angle than normal and tall wheels, the seat tube needs to be bent to clear the tire and have room for a fender. This may help you see it: ua-cam.com/video/1xRiF8rm4Qg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
I am looking for a new bicycle for bikepacking (my last bike was stolen). What is the weight limit for the bike (most manufacturers state 250-pounds including rider and gear) I weigh 250-pounds? I subscribed to your email list and on Friday I replied to your email asking this.
How would a Jones bicycle behave with skinny-er tires and lighter wheel in terms of front tire grip? There is far less weight on the front tire compared to traditional approach geometry with skinny tires, Jones uses wide and heavy tire+rim setup so even without the body weight on the front there is grip, how much front wheel grip would you loose with a traditional skinny-er tire and rim?
Have you heard of anybody running a Rohloff 14 hub on these frames? I have seen the bsa screw in adaptors to make standard hub eccentric to get over the chain adjustment. What mounting setup is required for the rear hub and where do the shift cables run?
Hi Julian, It is posible and people have done it, but we usaly don't recomend it. For more information feel free to send us an email at jonesbikes@jonesbikes.com or give us a call at 541-535-2034.
I bought my Jones 29+ in ~2015 and had it built by Neil at Cyclemonkey with a Rohloff Speedhub. (Before I talked to Jeff about this). I also have a Jones 29+ built by Jeff with Shimano components. Both have the same rims (WTB Scrapers) and Maxxis Chronicles (when they were still made), With the only difference between the two back tires being the hub, the Rohloff is 3lbs heavier. As Jeff shows in one of his videos, the Roholff also requires more torque to turn the wheel. That being said, I have not swapped out the Rohloff for 12 speed because I like it. I have a Gebla Rohbox shifter with SRAM X0 shifters, so the left thumb shifts up, right thumb shifts down. I have a belt drive so I also had to install a chain stay splitter. The eccentric bottom bracket allows you to adjust the setup like a single speed.
Yes, the rear hub is easily serviceable, it is very durable and has high-quality sealed cartridge bearings as well as the option to swap out free hub bodies and axles. Sorry to hear about your bike being stolen. If you have any questions about the bike feel free to reach out, we are always happy to help! Usually, the best way to contact us is by email at jonesbikes@jonesbikes.com or by giving us a call at 541-535-2034.
How would a guy in his late 50s like the Jones LWB on singletrack? I've looked at full suspension and hardtails from Giant but really like the idea of a fully rigid bike. Anyone here have experience?
I have wanted your LWB for a long time. I drove 700 miles round trip to buy one used like new. The bike rides fantastically, that said I have a problem when riding up hill in the 50 tooth sprocket. Something is flexing so much that it feels like I’m on an oval chain ring. Bugging the crap out of me ! What’s wrong. My other bike is Trek 1120 , I have $6000 into this build including the 2.5 lift jones bars. Please help ?
V-brakes don’t work so well when you are running tires 55mm (2.2”) or wider. Unless you’re okay with deflating the tire every time you want to remove the wheel.
@@watertankhikes Never been a big deal, and the Paul's Motolite that I use have a simple cable release when you need to remove the wheel. Jeff's LWB's ergonomic superiority over every other design is the best kept secret in the bike industry. Bravo!
love the purple dude, make it a main stay color!!
Agree!
It warms my heart that purple is the bike-colour to choose.
