This has forever been my favorite Oscar acceptance speech. Stanley had a unique ability to not only make us want to laugh, but also make us want to sing and dance. I hope you had a good time, Stan. RIP.
Sadly, Donen passed away today. What a magnificent and wonderful guy! Already mightily missed. So many thanks for so many joys. “Good-night, sweet prince; and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."- Hamlet
Sad that Stanley Donen passed today...I remember when this first aired and really enjoyed it. He really and truly deserved to be honored. May he RIP...
After many years of watching the Oscars, this acceptance speech is the sweetest, most joyfully endearing and dignified of any that stand out in my memory. Thank you Mr Donen for setting an unbeatable benchmark in entertainment over the years. My you rest in peace and you truly must be in heaven.
Such a great acceptance speech. I remember watching it more than twenty years ago and loving it back then and I still find myself utterly charmed now. What's more, I've seen so many of his films and have loved them all. This award was completely deserved and he's deserving of even more.
Donen is a simply brilliant and classy director, who is largely responsible for the creative and artistic success of Singin' In The Rain, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, On The Town, Funny Face, Charade, Arabesque, Royal Wedding, and Two For The Road, among others. He should have received the AFI Life Achievement Award as well.
Remember seeing this year's ago it was terrific. Sad that Stanley has now passed.such a great talent co director of with gene Kelly on the town singin the rain. Solo director of funny face seven brides for seven brothers co director of the pyjama game with George Abbott. From musicals to thrillers to dramas to comedies Stanley could and did do it all. And he did it with class Grace panache and excitement and great visual sense . You sir now In the words of the great cole porter are in heaven you're in heaven. And allthrougth you are now gone and we are now in mourning you have left us many reels of joy to give us many hours of happiness for years to come. You will always be remembered . Rest in peace godninght godbless you sir. From Michael from Yorkshire and proud of it.
A class act! Mr. Donen is still with us at age 94. I've seen these musicals many times over the past 50 years, and continue to watch them again on TCM.
Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this on TV at the time, not having heard of Mr Donen, and thinking it was just the most perfect warm, gracious and entertaining acceptance speech. Watching it again after 18 years, I still think it's the best:)
Happy Happy 96th Years Young Stanley Donen! You were such a great director! They talk a lot about the films you did with Gene Kelly, but the films without him were wonderful!!!! I really love MOVIE! MOVIE! which nobody talks about nor even ask you about. But i think it is a gem! By the way this was one of the best Oscars ever because of you! And yeah! Best acceptance speech ever! Others can take a cue from you.
Thank you for posting this. I am watching Indiscreet on TV, which prompted me to Google Stanley Donen. I was pleasantly surprised to see that he is still around, although not making movies at age 93. I have always remembered this scene from the Oscars, and it was a pure delight to watch it again.
Out of these iconic movies I've seen created by Mr. Donen, I've seen On the Town, Singing in the Rain, Royal Wedding and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. May he rest in peace
@@montrealfilmguy Or maybe he was just giving his hands a rest, didn't notice the camera was on him. He was standing after all. It wasn't like when Elia Kazan got his Oscar: ua-cam.com/video/3YziNNCZeNs/v-deo.html
Best acceptance speech ever. Rest in Peace and thank you for all the great films.
So many great icons in the audience who are gone now. Rest in peace, Stanley Donen. This was the best recipient's speech ever!

Perhaps the best acceptance speech ever. Donen has always been a class act and that rarest of Hollywood creatures: a modest genius.

I prefer Singing in the Rain, On the Town and Royal Wedding over Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Thanks for posting the entire clip, unlike the paranoid Oscars channel, who cuts out the tribute sequence of ANY segment.
i did tape it when it played back in VHS land. LOL
