- Martin Scorsese presenting an honorary Oscar® to Stanley Donen("Singin' in the Rain," "On the Town," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers") in appreciation for a body of work marked by grace, elegance, wit and visual innovation, at the 70th Academy Awards.
This was precious. And, oh, my heart, seeing Gregory Peck, Walter Matthau, and Robin Williams, all alive.
Kathryn esq : my exact feelings also.
Also, Sean Connery who recently died.
And Jack Lemmon.
Rest in peace you beautiful beautiful man ! Hopefully you're happily tap dancing in heavens with the people you love
He gave us great musicals and the best award acceptance of all time! Rest in Peace.
Who else would sing and dance to receive an award? Stanley Donen, thank goodness we have your classic films to enjoy, forever.
His movies literary saved me, gave me the only hope & moments of happiness in what was a violent home with unfit parents in my childhood. Thank you to the musicals of Stanley Donen, Arthur Freed, MGM, Rogers and Hammerstein & Disney. You bring joy to children who may not have it any other way, an escape when they cannot escape. THANK YOU MUSICALS x
I agree with you... Musicals are a happy place for me... Sooo good!
This is without a doubt the best Oscar speech ever. All Oscar winners from here on out should be required to watch this.
Stanley understands. It's not enough to be talented, you've got to make it appear effortless - that's the real magic (and charm) in entertaining.
Seeing this in light of Donen's passing.
1997 was also a year after Gene Kelly's passing. RIP.
A well-deserved honor for such a wonderful director. One of the best Oscar moments ever.
Still the cutest and THE BEST Oscar moment ever. Thanks for posting.
How I remember this lovely moment-- "words seem inadequate. In musicals, that's when we do a song. 'Heaven, I'm in heaven....'" God Bless you Stanley Donen. You brought so much joy to so many
How freaking adorable was he?! RIP sweet Stanley. Gene's been waiting for you up there.
A delighted Robin Williams at 3:12. It was nice to see him looking so joyful.Thank you.
Same for Gregory Peck, Martin Landau and Jack Lemmon!
Hands down, one of my favorite moments in Oscar history. I LOVE the Oscars and I'm a huge film buff. This was beautiful. Stanley Donen is AWESOME!!!
My favorite Oscar acceptance speech moment. The genuine class and graciousness of this man and moment make anyone take pause for personal reevaluation. In the year of "Titania," this moment stole the show. It would have been done more justice if it included the collection of highlights from his films, which in themselves made you take wonder at his work
So many great icons in the audience who are gone now. Rest in peace, Stanley Donen. This was the best recipient's speech ever!
This made me smile. As a 40 year fan of film musicals, and considering that song-and-dance films aren't done anymore, this was an especially fitting tribute to *and* from director Stanley Donen. The man not only sang, he tap danced!! Absolutely stunning.
What an amazingly humble and charming acceptance speech, the best I've seen. What a gent.
Rest in peace, Stanley.
This one and John Wayne's acceptance speech: real class.
I read the sad news of his passing and immediately thought of this video.
RIP Stanley. Heaven, you're in heaven.
Wow, just seeing this for the first time. This deserves FAR more views, one of if not the best lifetime award speeches I've seen.
Sometimes I've got to come back to this video.
Me too. It's the best recipient's speech ever!
Absolutely my favorite Oscar moment EVER, second is Kim Basinger's Oscar for L.A. Confidential, and a third place tie between Roberto Begnini for "Life Is Beautiful", and Marilyn Monroe's only appearance. This is just awesome and heartwarming, RIP Stanley Donen
RIP Mr Donen!
What a class act! 😘
A truly great director. Never forgotten! Rest in peace, dear Stanley. X
This was an unforgettable moment. Very classy, dignified, funny, sweet, self deprecating, and full of good advice. You gotta show up otherwise you can't take the credit.
I agree, I don't remember many better acceptance speeches: it's lovely, it's funny, it's award related, and it's BIG TIME deserved. Thanks for posting it, mate, I hadn't watched it again ever since. And for a moment I thought saw Gregory Peck alive and smiling. :)
My goodness. What a honour to witness this great man and film legend go thru the gears one last time making everyone cheer and laugh back in 1997, and now with a tear in the eye knowing he only passed away last month just before Oscar time once more. RIP Stanley and God Bless you and the work you leave behind for us all to continue watching.
So richly deserved. He's a great man.
What a perfect speech. RIP, Stanley and thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Singin in the Rain" is truly a work of art. I also love "Funny Face" with Audrey Hepburn and the dance sequence in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".
Stanley Donen began his career as a dancer in the chorus on Broadway. That's where he met Gene Kelly, who was starring on Broadway in Pal Joey. Thereafter, the two men collaborated on various film projects, including Singin' In The Rain at MGM, It's Always Fair Weather, and On The Town. Donen directed a series of iconic films independently, including Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, Royal Wedding, Charade, Arabesque, Two For The Road, and Bedazzled.
What an immense talent . RIP 🌺
0:03 your life RIP Mr. Donen❤🙏
Sing in heaven
That's how you give an Oscar speech-music,dancing,humour and pure class.
I remember this acceptance from when I first saw and it's just as good as I remembered it. Totally adorable.
God bless this man. He along with Kelly, Capra and Astaire changed my life. Thank you for preserving this.
Rest in peace sir 💜
This is my favorite Oscar moment of all time.
Such grace from this man
Donen's directorial work has stood the test of time and encompasses some of the best musical sequences of Fred Astaire, in Royal Wedding and Funny Face, of Audrey Hepburn, in the latter film, as well as Two For The Road, of Cary Grant and Hepburn in Charade, and his landmark work in co-directing Singin In The Rain and On The Town with Gene Kelly. He is one of the finest directors of the 50s and 60s.
Damn, so humble, so _truly_ humble
My favorite Oscar moment! What a talented director!! A legend
Stanley is beyond adorable. The guy has been married five times, and has now been partners for YEARS with the glorious Elaine May. He's totally nuts about her. When asked if he's ever proposed to her, he said, "Only about 172 times." He wears a silver medallion around his neck that Elaine gave to him, which says, "Stanley Donen. If found, return to Elaine May." Do you love it?
+DivineSimply Thanks for that bit of information. I had no idea that he and Elaine May have been a couple for quite awhile. I just LOVE this clip. I'm such a fan of his work and when he broke into song and dance, I was beside myself.
he such a darling with his dance and song thanks - it brought people to their feet- always remember him for 'singing in the rain, funny face, charade.,two for the road...'
Bring movie stars back to the Oscars...
They're pretty much all gone now...
The Oscars always have such great montages. Honestly they're some of the best parts. It's sad they can't show them on here.
This made me smile so much.
Simply the BEST speech ever
This is too cute,Stanley Donen deserves it cause he has made some fantastic films(My personal faves are "Singin' in the rain"(duh)&"Charades"
I’ve just watched this 37 times back to back absolute class
Mito! I love you Stanley!! Rest in peace.
A class act!
3:28 Holy Shit, Gregory Peck!!
@animeeclipse unfortunately, we do not have clearance to play the movie clips.
What a class act. I love the faces in the audience that get it!!! Especially Sean Connery.
RIP ! You gave us a really fun evening that night.
RIP Stanley Donen (April 13, 1924 - February 21, 2019), aged 94
You will be remembered as a legend
Oh my, Rest In Peace dear man.
This guy seems very grateful for his Oscar.
One of the best. Timeless indeed!
Such a wonderful director... He really deserved it! I love his movies....
I love this video. I missed this? For one Martin Scorsese seems to be a really nice man a real world treasure. Mr.Stanley Donen OMG what a love! This was lovely ,adorable and clever. WoW! I love looking into the audience to during these events. Timeless!
Watching a tribute to the man and his movies on TCM. RIP Mr. Donen for years of enjoyment and wonderful entertainment. It's true, they sure don't make movies like that anymore.
R.I.P. Stanley Donen (1924-2019)
Stanley Donen 1924 - 2019
That's a man with class. I love all of his musicals, but especially love his direction of my favorite Audrey Hepburn film (and one of the first true 'road' pictures) "Two for the Road".
SHEER CLASS!
What a genius! ♥♥♥♥
To the the three fools who have given the thumbs down....if u had as much tallent and success in ur miserable little lives as this great man. Then u can criticize....as u ain't....crawl back in the corner....
One of the Best Acceptance Speeches Ever. You go Stanley.
La Academia debería haber pasado por pantalla un resumen de su filmografía, tan espectacular, no solo los musicales le llevaron a la gloria, hasta su última película es una joya.
Lío en Río, cierto, gran comedia
I don't understand what a guy's gotta do to get a standing ovation???!!!
????
@Oscars Such a shame. Missing a huge opportunity here. Oh, well. Thank you for this gem of a video. :)
Perhaps the best acceptance speech ever. He is truly Great. Does anyone know where I could see the film clips?
@AtYourBeckettAndCall So true! What a bloody legend!!! Look out for Mark Cousin's Story of Film from this year - it's on this site. He interviews Donen at length and the the guy looks and thinks like a 40 year old, plus it's the best documentary I have ever seen...
When someone is really talented. Amazing😃
AMPAS does not own the rights to the film clips; the studios do. Therefore, we must cut them out.
One of the biggest mistake was to remove the honorary oscar from the show. That was for me the highlight of the show.
Absolutly agere.
when the academy awards were still fun to watch.....
very nice speech
R.I.P. Stanley Donen
I recently saw his underrated Movie Movie (1978) which has one of the most touching last lines ever.
"One minute you're standing in the wings. The next thing, you're wearing em'"
Real genius!
One of the best ever.
Sooo cute!!!!!! I love him!
I love him. Rest in Peace. xo
Great to see Scorsese pay his respects to the director of the greatest film ever made
Definitivamente este es uno de los GRANDES MOMENTOS DEL OSCAR.
Provably the best acceptance speech ever for an Oscar.
one the best acceptance speech ever
One of the best Oscar moments ever.
RIP Statnley
I met him today! He is fantastic!
Charade is my favorite Donen film
My favorite movie is two for the road
WONDERFUL STORY !!!
You DID see Gregory Peck:-))
When you love your work!!
Instead of trying to make the Oscars edgy with the likes of Chris Rock, why not begin giving these awards again during the telecast. Next year's ratings will be very high if the new Star Wars film is as good as many hope. Stop trying to change what people loved about this grand old show.
The best accepting award ever.RIP
This was Brilliant
