99% of what I make is with the cheap Red Heart Super Saver. I dont care how tacky that seems to other people. I crochet to relax, have fun and make something cute. I wish I could afford very nice yarn for every project. But thats simply not where I am at in life. ❤ Youre so right.
As a vegetarian, I’ve decided that my morals mean if I can’t afford kindly sourced eggs from happy chickens, then I can’t afford eggs. But honestly, it’s a privilege to be able to do even just that. I would like to buy ALL organic, but I can’t afford that at all. To judge someone for not holding themselves to your own standards makes no sense. We all have our reasons.
Very well said!!! Different reason and we are all in different seasons! Do you live in a place where you can have chickens? I don’t have any but I’m very fortunate so many people in my area raise backyard chickens!
People's attitude toward Hobby Lobby really upset me. Most of these people who won't shop there are people who want their particular situation accepted everywhere and Hobby Lobby doesn't accept their position. Why can't they accept HL's right to express their beliefs and standards the same way they want others to accept theirs. The yarn stash. I fell for that shaming and de-stashed most of my yarn. I felt very deprived and restlessly unhappy about it. The other thing was the quality of yarn = so I went to those regional yarn convention things and bought a LOT of expensive hand-dyed, special animal fibers - think yak. Most of it is still living in my closet. I don't DO that type of project. I don't enjoy it. So I will slowly rebuild my stash with the type of yarn I actually use doing the types of projects I enjoy making without guilt or pressure to "improve" my habits.
I don't care if people don't like that I shop at Hobby Lobby. I'm old enough to not care what people think about anything. No one can shame me about anything, where I shop, what yarn I use, or how much I have. Its not my problem its their problem.
If I lived close enough to Hobby lobby, I would be shopping there. I just heard about a restaurant that had a sign their political views and basically said, if you don’t agree with them, don’t come in, so guess what? People did not come in. Apparently, most of their customers did not share their political views so when they said they don’t want those customers there, they stopped coming. The owner then complained about the people he didn’t want in his restaurant because they were coming into his restaurant.
There is a common saying that there is no ethical consumption under late stage capitalism. What that means is that every purchase we make, if we trace it back far enough, has some negative impact on something. Even if it's made of biodegradable materials, the process of harvesting and processing the materials might have a negative impact on the environment or the people who do the work. Shaming on the individual level does very little to actually solve the problem.
Now that being said, I prefer not to shop at Hobby Lobby and I prefer not to eat at Chick-fil-A. At the end of the day, if I'm hungry, and Chick-fil-A is the only option, I'm not going to starve. Jo-Ann is 30 minutes away, and the selection at Michael's is terrible. Sometimes I stop at Hobby Lobby, and their yarn is pretty nice. 🤷🏼♀️ I'm not going to stop them from smuggling.
Well said! I was told about your channel while watching another video. I'm so glad my position is if people aren't paying my bills I truly don't care what they think about where I buy my yarn, or how much or little yarn I buy. I find it crazy that anyone would even think to comment on such a thing. Stay in your own lane people.
Very well said, Shannon. I have noticed the same “ trend” going on at crochet/knit sites. Nice reminder of the golden rule. What I always thought was ironic when I would see some of these shaming comments, is how it isn’t necessarily done to people who have artist studios, or a place where they do pottery, etc. Imagine a woodworker or sculptor in their shop/studio getting negative feedback because they have “too much wood or marble”. Let’s all be happy about the creativity and joy the respective craft brings.
That is a PERFECT example!!! I’m picturing someone walking in just to look around and criticize before storming out!! That’s a funny mental picture for me 😂
I agree completely. There are far too many people that think their opinion is the only acceptable way to be. Sad really. Also, I would love to see all of the top you are wearing and information on the pattern. So perfect for the summer over a tank! Thanks for all the great videos❤
The only place where I can buy yarn is Walmart. There are no Hobby Lobby's, Michael's, or Joann's here, and I don't trust websites. I prefer to be able to touch the yarn to decide if it's the appropriate one for whatever I'm making. I usually use acrylic like Super Saver because most of what I make is stuff that will definitely need to be placed in the washing machine at one point. I also use cotton for kitchen and bathroom things. I've never used any ✨️fancy✨️ yarn because: 1) I can't afford it 2) The way my life is, I don't have either the time or inclination to have something that specifically needs to be dry-cleaned because otherwise, it will get ruined if one drop of water touches it. It's way too warm where I live for wool and alpaca anyway. I'm okay with my $2 cotton yarn, thank you ❤
Oh, I loved Crystal's yarn wall, I'm sorry she was bullied into taking it down! I happen to love high end yarn, so make a lot of socks (don't take much yarn) and I've steered people away from some cheaper brands kindly "you might want to look at yarn b instead of yarn a" knowing they are similar prices. But shouldn't we all be encouraging each other no matter what the craft level!
Always love your kind, compassionate point of view, Shannon. When I watch your channel, it feels like I’m in the company of friends. Thank you for fostering this environment! 🩵🧶🩵
It works both ways. I don’t shop at Hobby Lobby for the reasons you mentioned and was told off on a message board for that. I don’t care where people choose to shop. Why do people care where I choose to shop? In this particular case, it wasn’t yarn shaming. All I said on the message board was, “I don’t shop there,” and I got hit with assumptions about my political affiliations. It’s not always about the yarn.
I can have an opinion on anything but I don't need to share that opinion! I believe it isn't my life, money, space and non of my business. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you. I live in northern Canada, our hardware store sells some Red Heart and Bernat yarn. I purchase some yarn to support them , there is a nursing home within walking distance so I am happy they stock some, and i see several Red Heart items being made. Postage is eye watering. Sure, I would love high end yarns but find joy and contentment with what I have. I really enjoy your posts!
Thank you Heather! I appreciate you watching and commenting. It’s interesting because here in Iowa we have several farm supply stores that are basically giant hardware stores, and every time I’m there I say “I wish they sold yarn here!” I love that yours does!!!!
You are so right. To each their own. I do wish that all yarn was made from sustainable fibers in an environmental friendly manner and affordable to everyone. I also wish the whole world could benefit from organically sourced food grown in soil that has not been robbed of nutritional value by chemicals. However that is not the world we live in so we each do what we are capable of from a place of love for all.
Hi Shannon, Your channel came over my feed. I love seeing this being addressed. I live in rural Iowa, we don’t have a local yarn shop, so me, I buy big box acrylic yarn. And I AM proud to say I have received First Place and Best of Show in our county fair using this yarn, one was a king sized blanket in a design I charted out by pencil, eraser, and graph paper. I have also been judged by my friends on yarn choice, I just reply “ well my word, you must have went right up to heaven and knocked Jesus off his thrown “ and I DO say that, it shuts them up right out of the gate.( farming talk 😉) we went on a small vacation two years ago to a city that had a local yarn store, oh the yarns were so beautiful and I purchased ONE skein of alpaca yarn, ouch, that hit my budget money, you know that was 3 years ago and I still haven’t used it. Just having it is nice. But girl I am happy people can afford it and use it, hey what ever makes you happy, then I am happy for you. And Hobby Lobby having issues that people don’t like, ok just don’t go there then. I would never eat raw meat and you don’t see me in a sushi bar 😂, but hip hip hooray for those who do. I say be humble and true to yourself. Nice channel I subscribed
Hello and welcome!!! Sorry this was the last of the comments, I should have answered in reverse lol! I don’t have any lys near me either! I totally get it! And yeah, I’ve invested in higher ticket yarn then been afraid to actually use it too! 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😂
I'm in rural Iowa, too! DSM is an hour away from me, so it's either buy yarn at Walmart or online. Funny thing is, I've got some wool yarn that someone gave me as a gift and I can't bring myself to use it because it feels like I should do something special with it!
Wow, craft and yarn shaming. I guess since I know very few people who actually craft or crochet I have never heard of this. UA-cam is the worst for the bad stuff. Crafters should be more careful of who they watch, and maybe don't read the comments if they are bad.
It seems to be much more of an online occurrence. I don't think people would consider being rude face to face. I'm glad you haven't experienced this! 😀
I agree with absolutely everything you've said! The world would be a much better place if everyone just stayed in their lane and minded their own damn business. I hate the "but it's just plastic" argument against acrylic because nearly EVERYTHING in our world is plastic nowadays.
Thank you. I wish everyone had the same view, unfortunately it's too easy for people to be critical and sometimes downright nasty to others when they can be anonymous.
I do too! And I think that's exactly the reason it goes so far sometimes, that they are hiding behind a screen. I just double people are that way in real life to someone they know....
As someone with alot of allergies, I would like to work with natural fibers but between financial cost and allergy risk, its not worth it. I hate the idea of using plastics and synthetics but its what is safest.
For sure! My friend's allergies keep her from using wool, so I totally get it! I wouldn't give up yarn and crochet either. So it's perfectly reasonable to use acrylics!!!
I’m so glad you made this video! I agree with everything you said. I stopped eating beef and pork, but I don’t expect others to do that because I did. It’s a free country. We all need to find our own way and do our own thing.
I shop at Hobby Lobby because i like their yarn and I happen to share their religious/ political views. I also shop at places that do not share my religious or political views, because I think it is silly to not buy YARN because I don't like someone's affiliations 😂 And I don't judge anybody else for where they shop or what they buy!
Donna here, I live in N. Louisiana where there are 3 places to get yarn. Hobby Lobby, Micheals and Walmart. That's it. The closest LYS to me is 5 hours away. (N.O.) The problem for me shopping on line is I want to FEEL the yarn. I don't buy clothes on line for this reason. I watch some channels that say certain yarns are soo soft, so I go to the store and pick it up, and its not. I am also old enough that I don't give a rats tail about what people think of me or how I do things. Being on a tight budget is another issue. For the past 3 years I have bought yarn one time a year at the clearance sales at Hobby Lobby and Micheals. (I don't bother with Wally world since they have next to no yarn at my store, even before the pandemic) If they don\t have what I want, I don't get it. I have been seeing A LOT of shaming all across the UA-cam verse. Some people think that if they make others look bad it makes themselves look better. Clearly that is not the case.
People who shame others..well, I instantly feel sorry for them because they are simply telling the world that they have personal issues. And I’m sorry for whatever issues they deal with that makes them so negative. Yes it makes them harder to love, sometimes, but those who are hardest to love need it the most.
Hi Shannon! I agree that craft/yarn shaming needs to stop. I remember when that happened to Crystal…she loved having her yarn room…it’s just awful that people made her feel like she couldn’t have it anymore.
The thing about Crystal is that she is so generous with her yarn. She does tons of giveaways and is, from what I’ve seen, just a lovely person. We just have to stop giving jealous, unhappy people a say in our lives.
I use yarn from everywhere. I love hobby lobby because when I’m in there I feel so peaceful and then I realize it’s the calming music they play in the background. I like the dollar tree because I can get some yarn when I don’t have money to buy yarn at the other places. I go to Michael’s and Joann’s when there are sales because I usually only buy discounted yarn. Im not a yarn or store discriminator 😅 Hobbi is expensive, I only buy from them when they are having clearance sales. I like super wash merino but I will wait till a yarn is deeply discounted or I won’t get it at all 😂
We are 💯 on the same page. Except for Michael’s, but it’s not because of anything bad, I just don’t have one near me at all lol! I will give Hobbii a try at some point, I keep watching their sales 😃
I'm so glad that you are addressing this issue. It was very wrong of people to cause Bag O Day to get rid of all of her yarn. There's nothing wrong with any yarn. You do you and be happy about it. Acrylic is just fine for donations and gifts. Most people don't want to have to wash it specially.
👏👏👏 Absolutely! We are all in different places with making things and we should all just enjoy our craft and mind our own business! Lol Thanks so much for the shout out. I did have a comment saying they were unsubscribing because I was "supporting Temu" with that video. People have just decided that everything is political anymore and we don't think about the individual and why they are purchasing what they do. Theres entirely too much shame going around. I do this hobby because it makes me happy, not because I'm choosing what other believe are ethical sources in their mind. So this was very spot on :)
Also you're totally right about it being a privilege, high I think is why most of the shaming does come from people who live near big cities - they have a very unrealistic view of what is available to people in other places.
Once again, you and I are on the same page! I did see that comment on your video. I’ve had a couple unsubscribes to this video but so far no one has left a bad comment. 😉
Every time a celebrity or politician or whatever starts talking about how we should live/work/eat/purchase it becomes obvious that they’ve never spent more than a few hours where I live! 😂 They might have stopped in Des Moines for an event but that’s hardly a true Iowa experience!!!
I'm very sorry people unsubscribed for something like that. The one point I disagree with is people's views on ethical. With ethics it's not really political it's how people and resources are being treated. Ethics means right vs wrong. Where opinions are emotion based. Some things are just right or just wrong. When an organization like the UN says something is unethical it's usually because of the welfare of people. Putting people in unsafe conditions should be a concern to everyone because it can happen to anyone.
I'm not from the US, I'm from Europe. So it's very interesting for me, when you say Hobbii is expensive. It's the cheapest option I have to get yarn. Although I need to say, I never buy things from Hobbii at the normal price. They always have discounts, so I just wait until the yarn I need is on sale.
i keep watching their sales! I think the things I am attracted to are kind of expensive lol!!! But in all seriousness, I do think we take for granted how easy it is for us to get yarn, and how much we can get for the price! I feel like we are pretty spoiled when it comes to how much yarn we get in a skein! I have been trying more Drops yarn that I've ordered from Wool Warehouse in the UK. I've liked it all so far, it been good quality, low prices and the shipping was pretty cheap too! But the skeins are so tiny compared to what we have in all the stores here....Thanks for adding your perspective, I appreciate it!
Im now subbed !!!! Woow you are preaching right now! People need to learn "mind your own business if its not about helping others" allow fplks to live their life as they choose! Stop trying to regulate other's lives when your life may be in need of criticism....beautiful video absolutely beautiful!
Hi Shannon. I love talking to about yarn and projects I have made. I often have a project in my hand. I love vintage yarns, so I'm often thrifting for my yarns . That's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, for sure. Imagine hearing that I got my yarn at a thrift store or from EBay or Facebook marketplace? I don't give people a chance to be a yarn snob! I brag about my good luck and the good deals I have found! Let's all be proud of our yarn stashes and projects.
If you're into vintage patterns as well, I found some really good antique and vintage crochet books on ThriftBooks. That was before I realized I'm a visual learner and it was all Greek to me. I was like wait....do I even know how to crochet?? 🤣 I've found amazing yarn at estate sales as well. Ain't a thing in the world better than some thrifted yarn ❤
@ShannonTalksYarn OMGosh! Same!! I lost one of my favorite cookbooks from 1994, and they had it!! That's when I saw the crochet books and thought I'd try it. Luckily, my friend does better than I do reading patterns, so I was able to gift them. Bonus: I can watch her and learn the pattern and I can make my famous Kentucky Butter cake for her efforts since I found the cookbook. It all worked out 🥰 PS: They also have a lot of my favorite trashy romances from the 80s and 90s, so it worked out triply well 😁
I am a new subscriber - I have knitted/crocheted for many years & enjoy many of the different fibres. This craft brings so much joy, calm & fulfilment to me - thank you for sharing such a positive perspective Shannon 😊🧶💐
Hello and welcome, I’m so glad you’re here! I appreciate you checking out my channel. I have crochet to give me the exact same thing too. Thank you for your kindness and encouragement!
Amen to every single point you made! People need to stay in their lane and mind their own business. It’s been a blessing to have a decent stash when one of my adult children requests something and I have the yarn on hand. We live an hour away from any box store or LYS. It is very upsetting that BOD was shamed to the point she felt she needed to purge due to others jealousy or sense of entitlement. I have fallen in love with natural fibers and may have $45 hanks. I also have HL crafters secret iykyk lol. They all have a place in my stash and project/gift plans. Your compassion is refreshing. Some of the snobbery is definitely a turn off whether it’s where we’re shopping or what we’re shopping for. Stay in your lane and I’ll stay in mine.
Having a religion and certain political ideas doesn't always mean it reflects on how they do business. I don't care about the owners of the store's religion or political beliefs as long as they keep it separate from the business. The people going around making hay over silly things are just unhappy people. I don't want to see anybody unhappy. There's always an underlying reason why people are unhappy But where I draw the line is them taking it out on other people. Especially the crafting crowd just trying to teach you something. Thank you for sharing this video.
Well said! Thank you for your very kind video! I have been knitting and crocheting for over 70 years and you are completely right. If you can’t say something nice…just don’t say anything!💜🧶
I've lived a life of being shamed for where I buy coffee, makeup, clothes, anything, and it was just stealing my joy. I'm happy to learn things so I can make more informed choices, but I do not allow people to shame me anymore. I personally won't buy off of Temu or Amazon for my own reasons, but if someone else wants to, it's not my right to tell them why they shouldn't. I fully encourage everyone to research businesses before they shop at them, but after that, it's their choice to shop there or not.
Very well said!!! I’m sorry you’ve had those experiences 💔 It sounds like you have a very rational and mature viewpoint on the subject so I’m hoping you’ve been able to process any trauma related to those experiences. ❤️
I completely agree with you Shannon. Each to their own with their own limitations. As one that do not always have the best economy I buy what I can afford and try to be thoughtful with what I have. When I can I share with my friends and they do the same. I am happy for all that can build up a good stash and would never feel the need to be envious because someone can buy more expensive yarn or supplies than me. I am happy for those that can and go by to each their own. Love your channel. Stay safe and crafty
There are people I'm sure that would love to use all these fancy wools and specialty Yarns I left a crochet I love to knit but I can't use any of those my family is allergic my husband was super sensitive and now both my boys are so I have acrylic and cotton and I'm happy enough I don't need to have super expensive to be happy I just need to be able to do my projects when I want to and keep enjoying what my grandma taught me
Well done Shannon people should mind their own business .a lot of people are yarn snobs too.personally I love a bargain.i crochet for charity so use acrylics .💝💝
Thanks Deborah! Yep, and especially in that situation! Why would you spend $20 on one hank instead of 4 skeins!?!?!? You can bless a lot more people that way!
I never understood the craft/yarn shaming. I shop all 3 major craft store (Hobby Lobby, JoAnns and Michaels) because we don't have an LYS in my town. I can't shop Wal-mart because I get ill whenever I set foot in there. I have a ton of yarn (my bedroom has about 1k skeins, guest room has around 60 and my closet has about 500) I caught lots of sales and now I just shop my stash for projects. I'm also of an age that shaming me would just get you laughed at while I kept on doing my thing while wondering if you were secretly jealous! lol
Beautifully said!! Most of my yarn I get for free, things other people don't have a need for anymore and it's so fun trying out new yarns and seeing what I can make with what I have. I have some handyed yarns I have purchased in the past or as wedding anniversary presents... but yarn is yarn for me. I completely agree that privilege is being able to choose and maybe not everyone realises that they see the world through a privileged view. Its never nice to make a person feel lesser then someone else, its "polite" bullying I guess. My heart broke when I heard Crystal talk about her yarn room. ❤
Me too!!! I was so disappointed for her! 💔 I love your term polite bullying , that’s exactly what it is, then they don’t have to feel bad about being so rude or mean! And I’m thrilled you’re having such a good time with yarn!!!
I choose to use natural fibers for my clothes and fiber projects I make for myself. That's my personal preference, and I am willing to do the extra laundry work. That said, if I make a baby blanket for someone, it absolutely will be in tumble dry acrylic!
I’m starting to incorporate more natural fibers into my own makes and I’m really enjoying it! But I totally agree, acrylic all the way in that situation!
I am a horrible yarn snob now that I am an old lady. There were years I could only afford Woolworths yarn. I love what everyone makes. It takes a lot to actually finish a WIP. I choose not to shop at certain stores, and that is fine. I am not going to judge anyone. A friend of mine used to make these beautiful shawls, and she could make them fast. She could only afford walmart yarn. My crocheting brings me joy, and that is all that matters. I make baby items in caron simply soft. Why? It's durable, inexpensive, super soft for babies and has awesome colors. I also have custom make yarn from the UK that I make shawls with there is no wrong way.
This was such an awesome video, it breaks my heart to hear the negativity so many people have to deal with, you were spot on with everything you said, thank you for your words ❤❤
I appreciate how thoughtful and kind this video is, and I am on board with what you're saying to a point. You're right that I don't think shaming people is a good idea, and there are legitimate reasons to shop in certain ways, and I think talking to people about why you are personally against shopping in particular ways, and understanding when they disagree with your reasoning, is much better than just telling them they're bad because there are things they might not know/agree with. However, using the example of Temu that you brought up, their parent company has been proven to use slave labor. I know shopping is complicated and there's no way to be 100% ethical all the time, but if you know you are supporting slavery with that purchase and you do it anyway...."that's the only way I can afford x fiber" is not an excuse. I know this is an extreme example and most things are not such a hard line in the sand, but I also don't think (which I know is not what you were trying to do here) saying there are never reasons to go "yeah if you're ethically okay with that, I'm not okay with you" is a reasonable stance either. Kindness, listening, and education are always what should come first, but there are things that cross a line.
Hi Sarah Jo! Thank you for taking time and responding with such a well thought out response! I definitely agree with you, and I fear that many or most of the inexpensive products we purchase are probably from sources we’d be shocked about if we really investigated more. I probably oversimplified what I was trying to express, but I feel as thought you understood you me, so thank you. I guess I was feeling is that people don’t think twice about ordering the same things (from the same wholesale) off of Amazon and don’t realize what’s they’re ordering. Again, thank you for adding your voice to the discussion 🤗
Thank you thank you, as a new crocheter on limited funds whose housebound I have to weigh up cost and availability and delivery verse having the more expensive stuff, so ty I would love thd yarns I see everyone use but not all availability In UK or easy for me to afford or acccess
It's so easy to feel left out watching some of the hauls. I get it!!! So you're in the UK? I just ordered from the wool warehouse and I was really happy with both the yarn and prices! I ordered mostly all Drops yarn.
The kids call this "yucking someone's yum." Not cool. Let people do them, and you do you. I use the gambit because I have the privilege of doing so and really dont care what anyone else does as far as their joy. As long as they aren't robbing the Yarn Barn at gunpoint. Then I might have an opinion 😂
It's a choice what some choose to purchase. I had an overabundance of yarn, but I was brought up in another generation. I called around and ended up giving it to my local library, because they a crochet and knit group that is learning the skill. I just watch UA-cam crochet channels to get inspired to create. People just need to know that if they don't have anything good to say, then do say anything. Shaming is just a nicer word than humiliate. I am not subscribed, but your channel was recommended to me.
Hi Judith, thanks for hanging out, watching & commenting! That’s a great way to make sure your yarn goes to good use, I bet your library was thrilled! I agree about the shaming being to humiliate. I’m glad I’m not the type of person who enjoys that!!!
Why do people feel the need to worry about what other people are doing? How much yarn you have, where you buy it, what you do with it is really no one else's business, especially not some random stranger on the Internet. People should really just worry about what goes on inside their own walls. Good grief!
No problem! Thank you very much! I'm having it proof read by a couple people I trust because I'm definitely not a patter writer lol. Hopefully in a couple weeks I I'll have a video out on it. The yarn is Super Saver Latte Stripe and I can't believe how much I love the colorway!
I would love to crochet with silks and wools, but they're just too much money. Today's acrylics are light years ahead of what we had in the 1970s, and they're reasonably priced. Many of them are really quite nice, too. Plus--wash and wear! I buy what appeals to my eye and feels good in my hand (and doesn't break the bank, lol).
I can’t remember at the moment what pattern it is, I’m sorry! But here’s the video where I talked about it, hopefully it helps! Don't wait till it's too late! Treat yourself to the "Good Yarn" with @slowcrochet ua-cam.com/video/2MDws-AM27Q/v-deo.html
Ability can be a big factor too - if you’re homebound due to illness or mobility concerns online ordering might be the only viable option for any shopping, yarn included! ☺️ or sensory issues… itchy wool? No thank you! 😅 I’m very lucky where I live there’s a huge annual used yarn sale for charity with super low prices. Without that I’d never have the yarn I do, and would feel very limited in my opportunities to try out new techniques and projects. I think if you know someone has certain values and they’re shopping somewhere in ignorance of something they’d disagree with it’s worth mentioning gently since they might like to know, but a lot of people must shop contrary to their values for loads of reasons. I think there are better more powerful ways to advocate for positive change in the world than pestering every individual to become a hyper-vigilant perfectionist who is ashamed and flummoxed by every daily decision they make. It becomes exhausting.
I just make what I want when I can😊! I shop where I want when I can🤷♀️! I was sad that Crystal took down her yarn wall too! It was gorgeous to look at🥰! Thanks for talking with us!
I belong to a particular crochet/knitting group and they have it automatically set that if you mention Hobby Lobby the post or comment gets auto-declined.
I’ve only been knitting for about 6 months so right now I purchase cheaper yarns to learn. Once I get better I’ll buy good quality yarn for my special projects. I just can’t justify spending a lot while learning.
In a world of fast fashion and single use clothing, fiber crafts can’t afford to shame and shun fellow crafters. We will lose making for the sake of active and daily wear/use. We are losing crafters to the shame and judgement. Mind your own business and make what you make! You can offer constructive suggestions based on knowledge and experience, like don’t use scratchy fiber for babies or folk with sensitive skin, or donation usually ask for fibers with less restrictive washing needs. We can share the knowledge in a polite and kind manner.
Oh thiss was so refreshing. Im not from the USA, Im from latin america and in my area we dont have this giant stores that I see in some videos. So I have to order online a lot or depend on the stock that my local little stores have. And dont even get me started on those tiny little balls of yarn that cost my montly budget for yarn. Sometimes I feel inadequate for the craft, at least in the english speaking part from it.
Hi Gayle! Oh my gosh, what a surprise! That’s was exiting for me, I’ve watched her channel for years!!! Thanks for heading over and checking out my video, I really appreciate it!
Thank you so much! It’s one of my favorite colorways of all time even though it’s a value yarn! It’s RHSS in Latte Stripe and I’ve got a video where I give instructions to make it. It’s not a traditional tutorial, but it’s so easy and I just walk you through it! Perfectionism Can't Stop Me From Sharing My Mesh Bolero! ua-cam.com/video/XrgP1a4cfiM/v-deo.html
Shannon, you are right, Thanks for the great video, as always and i love the beautiful sweater you are wearing ❤😊. It's nice having someone discuss these issues. I have also noticed people liking or disliking a crocheter based on race, sex or age. Being in my mid fifties i ❤love watching all people different races, men and women, young and old do their craft. In the end it isn't about any of those things (age, race or sex) it's about the crocheted project and there is always something new we can learn from others 😉 ❤Have a great day Shannon, i look forward to more of your excellent videos 📹 ❤
Hi Susan! Gen X representing! I’m almost 50, and tbh, I love it 😃 I have seen that too, I think that the diversity in crocheters can bring so much to our community. There are think young crocheters are doing that are out of the box and can really freshen things up! Every demographic has something important to bring to the table!
I shop Hobbii sales and follow their live shopping and bingo events for extra discounts. But even with those discounts, I only use them for yarns that are already on sale. People shame me for buying Hobbii yarn. I end up using a disclaimer that I buy sale items only. I live in an area where I have a Michaels but really do not like the store or their new ways of doing business. The Hobby Lobby and JoAnns is an hour from me. So I do buy my yarn on line. Lion Brand, Mary Maxim, Premier Yarns... also my go to for yarn deals.
I get it! It’s so hard when you can’t just pop into your choice of several yarn/craft stores! I’m pretty isolated too. We need to order from anywhere we can. I keep watching the Hobbii sales, and waiting!! 😃
I don't have a credit card, but I am able to order yarn online. They usually have other payment methods. I understand not everyone has access to the internet, but some catalog companies allow you to order over the phone. I don't know if it's possible to buy strictly "non-China" anymore. I don't buy from Temu because I read they treat the company/manufacturer unjustly. They have turned the tables. I think some people are jealous that make comments about someone else's yarn stash. I think a few may need some mental help for uncontrollable buying. Our society has definitely taught people to be consumer focused. I have also seen this in other crafts too, not just the yarn community.
I’m glad you’ve found ways to shop online and make it work! And yes, it is so hard to find products made here in the states! And it is sad how some people bully online like that!
Do whatever makes you happy. I once went to Goodwill and purchased $365.00 worth of imported wool yarn for$60.00. Will that ever happen again? Probably not! Will I still peruse the thrifts looking for that kind of deal ? Absolutley! Most people think I am wasting my time and could be crocheting instead, but you never know. To me, it is well worth my time because I could never afford to pay $34.95 for a 3.5 Oz. hank of yarn. I also have this thing where an item has to be cost effective. I mean, "Do I really want to spend $120.00 on yarn for a shawl cal? That's just me, someone else might feel completely different about. Just sayin!
I am 💯 right there with you! I also LOVE a good thrift haul. If I’d have gotten that good of a haul, you can bet I’d be out there trying to repeat that lol!! 😂
I prefer to use the cheaper yarns since I make blankets that need to hold up to washing and drying. Plus I’ve been looked down from my LYS so I don’t really want to give them my money. I do occasionally purchase high end yarns but directly from those makers.
Yes that makes so much sense! For both durability and the amount needed to complete a blanket! I don’t have much experience with LYS, I went in one once. The person working the counter seemed equally interested in ignoring all of us in the store lol 😂 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
yarn stash hate is jealously, usually a desperation for a reputation of moral superiority from those who can afford to "shop ethically". If it were some of those haters' personal stash they'd feel and do differently. Example, hoard it for dear life with exceptions to politics and allergies involving the fiber. Shamers can keep their views about the corporation/ fiber ethics and not cry about everyone else having the brand/ fiber in their stash. Shamers don't need to be extreme about acquiring controversial brand/fiber and needing to immediately get rid of it. Example, getting controversial fiber/brand from destash and keeping it doesn't mean agreeing with the coorporation's political views nor did acquiring the item mean you personally funded the brand/corp or harmed animals yourself. Someone else already paid for "unethical yarn" the animal already died. It's great they feel so strongly, at the end of the day if no one's using the product that's going to end up in a landfill and the animal involved would've died in vain. Sometimes people only shop at controversial mega outlets because that's the only local store around for miles or they could only afford economic (acrylic) yarn and the boutique$ only $ell fancy hank$ in $pecial blend$. It's deciding between affording 1 to 2 meals or getting a hank.
Same thing I’ve found with genuine leather. I love thrifting vintage leather pieces! The deed is done, I’m not rewarding the initial company and isn’t it better than going to the landfill?!? Great point 😃
99% of what I make is with the cheap Red Heart Super Saver. I dont care how tacky that seems to other people. I crochet to relax, have fun and make something cute. I wish I could afford very nice yarn for every project. But thats simply not where I am at in life. ❤ Youre so right.
I love RHSS! They have some amazing colors. I am currently in love with Latte Stripes!
@@ShannonTalksYarn 😂I'm making a sweater with that yarn right now. ❤❤
@hannahm.9881 that’s awesome!!! It’s so pretty 😍
@@ShannonTalksYarn we happened to be renting a house with neighbors that have chickens! Sometimes they wander into our backyard. It’s the best!
@stephenieolson8535 that’s awesome!
@@egoreknits they’re not my eggs, and I live no where near Tennessee
People forget to live and let live. Decide what’s best for yourself and don’t worry so much what others are doing.
Perfectly stated! 💯
I don't care if people don't like that I shop at Hobby Lobby. I'm old enough to not care what people think about anything. No one can shame me about anything, where I shop, what yarn I use, or how much I have. Its not my problem its their problem.
It sounds like you’ve got it figured out!!! 😃 That’s an awesome perspective, I love it!
That is a great perspective to have!!!
Thanks for checking out my channel, I really appreciate it! 😃
I go to thrift stores for my yarn and I have had people gift me yarns too which is great and a fantastic blessing since my budget is only $30.
Yeees!! I love thrifting for yarn, I’ve gotten some amazing deals 😃
I used to buy a lot of yarn from thrift stores. I have had some real bargains too. Free yarn is even better.
That’s a funny mental picture for me 😂
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I have Too much yarn?? Lol 😆…I mean, you do know IM A CROCHETER, right? Try and keep up! Lol 😆
I agree completely. There are far too many people that think their opinion is the only acceptable way to be. Sad really.
Also, I would love to see all of the top you are wearing and information on the pattern. So perfect for the summer over a tank!
Thanks for all the great videos❤
Thanks Kathy! I’m working on a pattern and video. I’ll have it out probably sometime in the next 2 weeks!
@@ShannonTalksYarn Wonderful, thank you!
@kathyzorn9186 YW!
I agree craft shaming needs to stop cause I was judged for shopping at hobby lobby and Walmart for yarn but it's local and wht I can afford
That’s so frustrating, I’m sorry you’ve had that experience! Well I’m glad you have access to those stores and can get affordable yarns 😃😃😃
Same hobby lobby is all I have near me.
I've never used any ✨️fancy✨️ yarn because:
1) I can't afford it
2) The way my life is, I don't have either the time or inclination to have something that specifically needs to be dry-cleaned because otherwise, it will get ruined if one drop of water touches it.
It's way too warm where I live for wool and alpaca anyway. I'm okay with my $2 cotton yarn, thank you ❤
There is absolutely nothing wrong with yarn bought at Walmart, that’s for sure! 😃
Yeeees I would love to see more encouragement, you are so right! I felt so bad for Crystal too!
Always love your kind, compassionate point of view, Shannon. When I watch your channel, it feels like I’m in the company of friends. Thank you for fostering this environment! 🩵🧶🩵
Thank you for your kind encouragement ❤️❤️❤️
I appreciate you being part of this community!
Yeees, that’s very true! I’m glad you added that to the discussion…..I’m sorry that was your experience tho 🫶🏻
I can have an opinion on anything but I don't need to share that opinion! I believe it isn't my life, money, space and non of my business. Thank you for sharing!
Well said Rachel!! We all need that perspective 😃
Well said Shannon.😊
Thank you Marcia!!! 😃
Beautifully said. Don't shame others. Be kind. Treat others as you'd like to be treated. ❤️

Oh my gosh, yesssss!!! It’s where I go to get away from all that 😃
Agree 💯- we all need to mind our own business and let others do the same.
I couldn't agree more!!!
Ehh fellow Canuck!
Sadly, that is true! But yes you’re right, we need to do the best with what we have! ❤️
@SoozBeez I totally get that!!! When you don’t have good access to yarn, you do want to hang on to it!!! 😃
Beautiful message!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much!
Oh my gosh, you are soooo right about that!!! 😃
Well said, Shannon. I feel it comes down to the simple principle that people need to mind their own business and stop judging others.
Thanks Kaytie!! Yep, to each their own! 😃
I heard a saying: minding your own business is the secret to a happy life.
@belantww I think it really is! It seems like the opposite is true too, the most unhappy people are the ones concerned with everyone else!
The voice of common sense. Such a rare thing today.
We could definitely use more of that, couldn’t we!?!? 😃
Exactly, we are all on different paths aren't we! Thank you Connie!
@@ShannonTalksYarn Yes, we are. You’re welcome, Shannon! 😊🫶🏻
I agree, I’m not going to let that keep me away from yarn! 😃
Side note: that sweater looks fantastic on you❤
Thank you very much!!
Beautiful Message. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Yep, it’s too bad when people act that way! I live in a “yarn desert” too, my in store options are quite limited too!
I know, it was really sad! Especially considering that’s how she makes her living!
@@ShannonTalksYarn yes, exactly!
The thing about Crystal is that she is so generous with her yarn. She does tons of giveaways and is, from what I’ve seen, just a lovely person. We just have to stop giving jealous, unhappy people a say in our lives.
@belantww yeeess!!! 💯
@@ShannonTalksYarn 😊
I'm so glad that you are addressing this issue. It was very wrong of people to cause Bag O Day to get rid of all of her yarn. There's nothing wrong with any yarn. You do you and be happy about it. Acrylic is just fine for donations and gifts. Most people don't want to have to wash it specially.
I know, I felt so bad for her!!! 💔
I couldn't have said it better!! 😀 And thank you for the sub, I really appreciate it! ❤
I couldn’t agree more Kelly! 😃
Kelly I've gotten my yarn at thrift stores too!
I love Thriftbooks!!!
It all worked out 🥰
PS: They also have a lot of my favorite trashy romances from the 80s and 90s, so it worked out triply well 😁

And amen to you to Shari, you nailed it!!! 💯
I agree 100%. Everyone has their own life and circumstances. People need to be kind and respectful. Minding one's own business is key.

Very true! TBH, I like not knowing their views lol. I agree that especially in the crafting niche, just be positive!

That’s so amazing, I love that! Thank you for your encouragement ❤️
I’m sorry you’ve had those experiences 💔
It sounds like you have a very rational and mature viewpoint on the subject so I’m hoping you’ve been able to process any trauma related to those experiences.

Literally! Just let people enjoy what they enjoy!! ❤ love your videos, thank you for being kind :)
YEEEES! And thank you for you encouragement, I really appreciate it!
I'm also of an age that shaming me would just get you laughed at while I kept on doing my thing while wondering if you were secretly jealous! lol
That's awesome you can shop your stash like that! That's why I love having a yarn stash so much 😀
Beautifully said!!
I love your term polite bullying , that’s exactly what it is, then they don’t have to feel bad about being so rude or mean!
That’s such a good perspective, I appreciate you sharing it! 🤗
This was such an awesome video, it breaks my heart to hear the negativity so many people have to deal with, you were spot on with everything you said, thank you for your words ❤❤
Thank you Dixie! I agree it is so sad to see the negativity!!! Thank you for your kindness ❤️
❤❤❤I love you!!!!! Thanks for saying and doing what you do❤❤❤
You are so welcome!!! 🤗
You are so knowledgeable beyond your age Thank you so much for your honesty !
You are so welcome! 🤗
Shannon, thanks for addressing issues that need talking about. 😊
You are so welcome!
Hahahaha I’m right there with ya! 😃
YUP YUP YUP!!!
I firmly believe that we are all our own keepers and we need to work with what makes us happy without harming ourselves.
You said it!!! 😃
Why do people feel the need to worry about what other people are doing? How much yarn you have, where you buy it, what you do with it is really no one else's business, especially not some random stranger on the Internet. People should really just worry about what goes on inside their own walls. Good grief!
I completely agree!!!
I have watched some of your previous videos, but became a subscriber after this video. You said it all very nicely. Thank you.
Welcome aboard! I sure appreciate it 😃
Sorry for being a bit off topic, but do you have a pattern for your top? It's beautiful! 😍
No problem! Thank you very much! I'm having it proof read by a couple people I trust because I'm definitely not a patter writer lol. Hopefully in a couple weeks I
I'll have a video out on it.
I think you’ve nailed it! Today’s acrylics are amazing. Look, feel and affordability are where it’s at!
You are so wise! I haven't had this experience, but you explain well. ❤
I’m glad you haven’t experienced it!!! ❤️
Oh, and what pattern is that beautiful shawl ? Please 🦋
I can’t remember at the moment what pattern it is, I’m sorry! But here’s the video where I talked about it, hopefully it helps! Don't wait till it's too late! Treat yourself to the "Good Yarn" with @slowcrochet

Oh my gosh, I could not have said that better! ❤️❤️❤️
I just make what I want when I can😊! I shop where I want when I can🤷♀️! I was sad that Crystal took down her yarn wall too! It was gorgeous to look at🥰! Thanks for talking with us!
Thanks for continuing the conversation!!! 😃 I appreciate it & it sounds like we totally agree!
I belong to a particular crochet/knitting group and they have it automatically set that if you mention Hobby Lobby the post or comment gets auto-declined.
Wow! 😮
Yikes 😲
That’s a shame because I love Hobby Lobby I love this cotton yarn. It’s my favorite and I buy in bulk every other week when it’s on sale.
So dumb
Censorship at its best
Two words: preach, sister! 💞💞
Hey Mary!!! Thank you my friend ❤️
I’ve only been knitting for about 6 months so right now I purchase cheaper yarns to learn. Once I get better I’ll buy good quality yarn for my special projects. I just can’t justify spending a lot while learning.
That makes perfect sense to me! 💯
I agree!!! There is such a difference between the two examples you give! Thanks for adding that to the discussion! 😃
Thank you for bringing that to everyone's attention
YW!
💯 to all this!
Thanks Meagan!!!!
I’m Linda from Alabama sometimes I’m in Florida you are so right I think people should leave you tubers alone also
Amazon has same items a temp and SHEIN just double prices some yarn from temu breaks easy and small skiens
Hi Linda, thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it 😃
many people are allergic to wool acrylic is the best for babies and others no matter what anyone thinks
Very true!😀
Oh thiss was so refreshing. Im not from the USA, Im from latin america and in my area we dont have this giant stores that I see in some videos. So I have to order online a lot or depend on the stock that my local little stores have. And dont even get me started on those tiny little balls of yarn that cost my montly budget for yarn. Sometimes I feel inadequate for the craft, at least in the english speaking part from it.
That is such a good point! People forget that all places aren’t like the little bubble they live in! I do wish it was easier for you to acquire yarn!
Sara Sach gave u a shout out. Hi and love your top and the colors. We should always be kind to people. Thank you for addressing this
Hi Gayle! Oh my gosh, what a surprise! That’s was exiting for me, I’ve watched her channel for years!!! Thanks for heading over and checking out my video, I really appreciate it!
That is a pretty shirt you have on, what yarn did you use? What pattern?
Thank you so much! It’s one of my favorite colorways of all time even though it’s a value yarn! It’s RHSS in Latte Stripe and I’ve got a video where I give instructions to make it. It’s not a traditional tutorial, but it’s so easy and I just walk you through it! Perfectionism Can't Stop Me From Sharing My Mesh Bolero!

I’m almost 50, and tbh, I love it 😃
I have seen that too, I think that the diversity in crocheters can bring so much to our community.
Thank You for this. Well said. ❤
You’re very welcome! ☺️
Hi! This was very well presented and I couldn't agree more.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and commenting 😃
Empathy...yesssss! 🧶💓🌈
💯
We shouldn’t be expecting Sharon from down the road to take on all the problems of capitalism, we all just do what we can 👍🏼
Yep!
Very well said
I prefer to use the cheaper yarns since I make blankets that need to hold up to washing and drying.
Another wonderful video Shannon 💞
Thank you Mads! I can’t wait to check out your new video on the temporary member of your family!
I love Hobby Lobby’s yarm!..LOVE IT!…since when is being Christian a bad thing!…😊
It's sad that some people are so stuck on that and want to pick fights abut it.....
I enjoy shopping there too!
yarn stash hate is jealously, usually a desperation for a reputation of moral superiority from those who can afford to "shop ethically".
