I have two male Rotties and a female WL GSD. In my experience the combo of both are complete security package. Mine are family house dogs and are great companions. The female GSD is almost ALWAYS the one who alerts the Rotts to anything unusual. She is way more protective- which could be because of her sex. What I like is she is vocal where as the Rotties are not. She will scare the burglar with her bark and GOD forbid - if they are stupid enough to break in - the Rotts will handle the rest.
Very interesting. I've been wanting a Rottie for a while. I'm told by seasoned owners that the Rottie is a sort of 'silent observer': He/she will observe a potential threat, discern the danger, alert his/her family of the pending danger and if necessary respond in kind: Vocally, or with an attack.
@@itskevonejonesyo1088 Agree 100% , 2 rotts can be a problem. P.S. Rotts are not "friendly" towards other dogs, at least my 2 rotts have killed at least 10 stray dogs who approchead aggresively, no dog lovers, they aint.
@@97atul ofc if you train the dog to protect they dont become protection dog because of breed. Just look at people that has tested their untrained rotties.
@@Arcticpagan You're wrong in my opinion. I work with Rottweilers who even at the start of their training (so untrained) will and absolutely do protect their family. There are two things you might be forgetting. Firstly, a Rottweiler is a VERY dominant breed. It will only protect it's family or things it respects. If a Rottweiler isn't protecting - You're not worth protecting in it's eyes. Secondly, Rotties are wait n' see dogs. They don't respond until they absolutely have too. A lot of people ''testing'' their Rottweiler are just plain idiots. Most of the time you can see the Rottweiler just isn't being fooled into thinking it's a situation in which it needs to act. Another common reason some dogs who are from guarding breeds do not protect is over socialisation. In my eyes this is great, but it's a fact that over socialisation means your dog is sanitised to threats (which you really want as a pet dog). Of course you can then train them into protecting, but most people just assume they are too soppy (which they are not). Out of all breeds, both the Rottweiler and Doberman do not need training to protect. You have in actual fact got to train them to keep this instinct in check. You do not train them for protection using normal methods. My most hated thing in the world is hearing (mostly Americans I have to say), I'm getting a Rottweiler for protection. They make so many mistakes and often end up giving the dog up because it wants to kill everyone and everything. At around 18 months Rotties will start to want to keep you safe without you making the dog even more threat minded. It's sad. All these people are doing is ultimately hurting the breed, and making their dog troubled and stressed.
The show lines of GS are a disgrace. Shame on the AKC. Function over form! Especially in an animal that becomes part of your life and family. Why risk the health of the breed for a "look"?
ESPECIALLY with breed like the German Shepherd!!! These are ultimate dogs, they have jobs. To this day German Shepherds are still the dog of choice for many police agencies and militarys around the world. To set an official standard based on looks instead of ability.....is an outright crime.
Actually in the process of breeding for look, they are destroying the look itself. I work in an uptown neighbourhood and I see people with cute German shepherd puppies. They sure paid a lot of money for them. Few months forward you see a dog that is not healthy, that walks funny due to the spine and hip anatomy of these over and bad bred show dogs. A very sad image. You feel very sory for the dogs, not for the owner who paid a lot of money to the breeder who possibly is totally legit to produce such unhealthy dogs. . On the other hand you can see, rarely, working line GS. Absolutely stunning they are.
@@wuerzelburg I've never understood the aesthetics of "lowering" the hind quarters either. Makes an odd looking, unhealthy dog. I gotta wonder how these decisions are made. Is there a committee? Does it just evolve?
I have working line GSDs. They are super intelligent and are superb problem solvers. Working line GSDs are a spectrum. There are highly prey-driven working line GSDs (typically operate as sport-dogs). There are others with a good balance of prey and defense drives (a patrol dog requires a good defense/prey balance with a higher weighting on the defense side), while a drug detection dog needs untiring hunt-drive. And so on. A good working line GSD, with a balance of prey and defense drives, and with an excellent nerve-base, is a bedrock solid dog. They will have a complete - complete - off-switch when inside the house. (all of my working line GSDs have a total off-switch inside the house), while being able to operate at 200mph when they are working and problem solving out in the field. During a 20+ hour drive, my working line GSD boy did not make a single whine during the entire trip. He just settled down and went to sleep in his crate. That requires a rock solid nerve-base, since a weak-nerved dog would be whining and fidgeting and causing a ruckus during such a long trip. He operates at 200mph in the field, but sleeps inside my bedroom on a separate bed of his own. At the same time, not a single mouse can get by (let alone a 2-legged or larger 4-legged creature), without him being aware of it. GSDs are also velcro dogs and you will never be alone, even when heading to the bathroom or while watching TV. They sense and figure out even the emotions running through your mind. Also, unlike Malinois, they mature slower but bond with their humans, far stronger. All of my GSDs were single owner dogs for the most part and don't bond easily to a new owner right away.......the new owner will have to take the time to bond with them and earn their respect.
Aay Kay I have a friend who is a cop and works with mallanois, they are fantastic dogs aswell but in my opinion a working dog needs to work, for real, all kinds of problems come when they don’t. I go as far as to say that certain breeds shouldn’t be allowed to be pets. It’s a potential disaster for everyone involved.
Aay Kay ...good thoughtful and true comment about working gsds...also true, is that they will follow you to the bathroom, no matter how small the space. For me, the best dog breed, period....for 20 years.
My GSD is 6yr working line. I love him to death. But after him, I'm getting a Rottweiler. The biggest problems I have with my current GSD is his HIGH energy level and the amount of fur that will enter your life is insane!
@@dirkdiggler6082 Dude... The fur is everywhere. You will always be finding it in your drinks, all over your clothing. EVERYWHERE. GSDs chill when they are sleeping. lol
Hate to tell you bud, but the Rottweiler does shed and sheds A LOT! And I noticed you had a working dog. I have a working line Rottweiler and his energy is also insane. The only difference I would say between a working Rottweiler and a working GSD is the Rott is not as fast, but can go on forever.
I had a German Sheperd, Lobo. Man he was a big boy! He came up to my waist. I'm 5ft 6 in. His back side at least. His head came up to my chest. Just walking him was an event. He was ridiculously strong. Btw I have owned red nose, brindle and blue pits most of my life. Lobo was special. I wasn't sure of his heritage, but he was definitely Not a show dog, lol. Anyway, I hope this helps anyone, they are very cool dogs. But they do have spirit in them. Make sure you show them your the Alpha. God bless everyone.
I feel both the Doberman and Rottweiler are the better choices if you don't want to deal with the large amount of shedding. I say this as a GSD owner. Personally I lean towards Wolf Like dogs rather than Mastiff type but everyone had a favorite, no right or wrong answer there.
You're about to understand that the ''short'' haired Rott actually sheds like a mofo. In regards to health concerns the GSD is in serious trouble because of what we've done to the breed sadly. Rotties also have major issues with cancer amongst other things. You'll also discover that the Rottweiler needs a job. It is NOT less work as you put it. If you have a bored Rottweiler, you'll have a destructive Rottie and with that bite force, even walls are not safe. If you think you're about to have an easier job raising a Rottie than you are a GSD, you really should think again. Both breeds are highly intelligent and need stimulation multiple times a day. My own dog ate a table when he was a pup (he was left alone for five minutes). I have a 135lb male working Rottweiler that comes from German (I'm in Europe) championship lines. He is now six and trained to a ridiculous level. He loves scent work and has been trained to work with the police. I can promise you had I known just how much work was involved in this (keep in mind I have always raised large breed dogs such as Mastiffs, Dobermans & other non-working Rotties) I would have had to think twice about it. The reason Rottweilers do not make good police dogs (the only reason) is that massive bite force. A GSD can bite someone its ordered to chase and not really hurt them. A Rottweiler will break bones. In regards to being a family dog, there simply isn't a better large breed dog than the Rottie. They need to be introduced to a new baby (if one comes after they do) but other than that they are exceptional. The only training needed in this regard would be for the dog to calm down when children are around. They are large, but often do not realise how large they are. They can bump into kids sending them flying. You are correct on saying Rottweilers do not need to be trained to defend you. The problem with them is actually the opposite. They need to be taught when to not protect you. Please remember socialisation and training (from eight weeks) is NOT optional. My own dog went through a stage (as most Rotties do) at about 18 months old of simply not allowing people to enter my home - Regardless of if I was there. To this day, he is not interested in other people and flat out refuses to be stroked by a stranger. You're about to go on an amazing journey that will test you to your core, but eventually you'll end up with an amazing dog. Good luck!
@@aaronnordstrom788 this is in opinion and I respect him, the doberman is a frankly cool dog very strong and very good guard what I like also in the doberman is his athletics is a real runner ... the problem with these dogs c is that it is dogs not very resistant, actually it is almost impossible to go hiking in the mountains in winter where beautiful walks in the snow ... when I lived in Canada I loved to go camping with my friends when there was snow we all had dogs that were able to go camping with us, all but one of my friends named Ford, he had two doberman European pinscher both were chocolate-colored, unfortunately he could not bring his dogs because they were very sensitive to the cold he could just stay maximum 30 minutes with special dog combinations so impossible to bring them, but after that he bought a beauceron and he can bring it to the campsite ... no matter where I wanted to buy a doberman I prefer better in countries and hot region like Algeria, Spain or California ... if I wanted a dog that can me to follow anywhere and any time and to be able to protect me I would choose a rottweiler where a German Shepherd.
As someone who owns a working line German shepherd I pretty much 100% agree with everything you said. They are extremely smart and driven. This combo makes them amazing at pretty much every task you present them. But also means you absolutely have to be on top of your training all the time. You need to give them new or very engaging challenges all the time because otherwise they make their own fun, and will take advantage of anything where you slip up on keeping order. The only thing I would say about home protection is that very few dogs of any breed are truly natural home protectors, in the sense that they will genuinely protect you by attacking a threat without training or cueing. But my German shepherd absolutely scares the living daylights out of all visitors until I out her and even if she knows someone she will still keep them out until I've given her the all clear. After I've given the all clesr she will generally be friendly and appear relaxed take commands and pats from strangers if I tell her to but doesn't let strangers out of her sight and will look to me anytime something seems off to find out if she needs to switch on or not. She like most working line dogs of any breed I've met is very territorial and will take on anything that comes into the yard or house unannounced. She has 0 protection training and I've had to work to teach her to understand when to leave things alone. She also naturally switches on around any people acting or appearing suspicious or aggressive at all or that make me feel concerned when we are out in public despite her diminutive size people will always give you and her a wide berth if she gives them even a small stare. My friend's working line shepherd completely bent out a steel fence panel because someone had broken into the neighbours yard. However I had a friend who had a petline German shepherd and one day he looked out his window and saw the dog playing with a stranger in the yard he hadn't let in. So I'd say it depends on the dog as it does with any breed but for the most part even an untrained working line shepherd will perform role of a so called "natural protector" .
Well said. My GSD working line, is always switched on and suspicious of everyone unless I tell her to claim down. If anything, GSD are overly protective which can overkill at times.
Yea the show line german shepherds are completely ruining the breed, extremely sad that they value negative traits as positive just doesn’t make sense smh
I got both... Two great dog breeds. As far as home protection, GSD tends to hear more subtle noises/ occurrences. The Rottie tends to become more aggravated with louder noises or things going bump closer by or inside the house. Both are ready to attack at a moments notice. Just some things I've noticed in living with/training both. Keep up the work, Zeek. Dope vids 💯!!
C W Lol, just because the damn, stupid, dumb, moronic people at the AKC don’t recognize a breed doesn’t mean it isn’t a breed. There are many other kennel clubs that do recognize it. In my opinion, the AKC is a terrible organization, look what they did to the beautiful, majestic German Shepherd! They turned it into an unhealthy, terrible temperament having, no work drive, frog-dog!
I’ve raised two rescue, albeit full GSDs, one GSD/Rottweiler hybrid. That big boy had a lifetime food aggression. We got him to mellow with this over the years but it never went away. I now own a giant male CAO. Recall, if and when he damn well feels like it but damn do I feel safe. The recall of my Shepherds and my hybrid were flawless!
As a person who has had both...German Shepherds are overall better. But like this gentlemen stated if you have a fairly relax/city life and do not have the time or access to things like parks or open fields and don't actively enage in outdoor activities then a German shepherd isn't the dog for you. They need a lot of stimulation...and tend to act up if they don't get any. Rottweilers (when compared to GSD) are less work and more relaxed.
I guess you've not had working lines in that case. He did mention he wanted that and in that scenario a working Rottweiler needs much more stimulation than a GSD.
So I have show GSD. They have OFA good or excellent hips. They have very strong herding instincts. They are protective, but they aren't exactly a protection sport dog. If you are going to get a GSD with good hips, the show lines of North America have nearly eradicated the disease. I have taken in BYB GSD, and x-rayed their hips-- all dysplastic. All with coyote rears. Zeke, you're just wrong about the show dogs and their hips. We've been getting our dogs x-rayed for years and made dramatic efforts getting them away from hip dysplasia. People hate on these dogs because there is an internet lynch mob that thinks the rear affects the hip joint placement. There is a ton of hip dysplasia in the breed, but it's not in the AKC or SV show dogs. Also, you did not show any of these dog in full gait. You took little snippets of them in slow motion. The correct AKC gait is one of the most beautiful dogs in motion in the world, and I'm not saying this because I'm breed blind. I used to hate these dogs, and then the bastards won me over. My dogs are trustworthy with kids and other dogs. They aren't bouncing off the walls like a lot of the bitework-bred dogs, especially the ones from Eastern Europe. It is irresponsible that so many have been told to get these over the show dogs, because they don't have the rear angulation. They don't have the rear angulation, but they also don't have the off-switch. If you'd like to learn about American show GSD and how they improved the hips, please read this interview with Jimmy Moses: www.thedogplace.org/ProFiles/Moses-James-Interview-028.asp
Seeing those show line GSDs breaks my heart. And those AKC judges don’t see anything wrong with it! We as a dog loving community need to come up with a dog show that requires function and not just appearance.
@@burcules377 it's a pretty huge negative though, both my dogs are large breed with a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. I can't imagine getting a dog with a life expectancy of half that. I've always wanted an Irish wolf hound and I just don't think it would be worth it.
@@shamrockewe822 yeah I agree I have a dogue de bordeaux myself. Fortunately she is not kc registered or not a show dog saw her life expectancy is quite a bit higher
@@shamrockewe822 the average fir a full kc registered is 6 to 8 years but i think with the correct amount of exercise food and not overdoing the exercise you could prolong there life
All other reasons were on point except that the German shepherds do not have natural instinct to protect homes. Wow! Never imagined that you being such experienced with the canine world would say so. I have a German shepherd here in India. No training at all. None.. But he knows who to attack and who not to. And NO urarmed person can enter through those gates if he is there. There has been an instance where a fairly big guy(one of my staffs) entered the lawn, unaware of him being there.. Killer, my GSD would have literally killed him that day if I did not reach on time.. Apart from this, he has stood his ground on every single occasion he waa required to and you're saying they are not natural home protectors. Rottweilers are great dogs and had one before him but I would trust both with my property and life.. Also, here in India, majority of us do not train our dogs.. Not even the basic training but still do their jobs with 100% efficiency. Anyways, to each his own. Nice video 🙂
I think the GSD is better at personal protection and the rottweiler is better at property protection. Although yes the GSD can be excellent at home protection, rottweilers are just better at it.
@@littlelizard3483 When I reached it was on him and yes he did bite him. He was taken to a hospital and recovered in few days.. He did not get the opportunity to bite him for long.. I was there within 2-3 minutes of the incident. However, it could have been fatal in my absence.
@@Gwyllgi Apart from size, I dont see any reason why GSD is not a good dog for property protection. As I said, I have had both dogs and both only for property protection and both did their jobs well. See, it all depends on the dog, not entirely on the breed..I have witnessed incidents where Labradors or even pugs stood their ground..and sometimes even a GSD or Rot or doberman retreats if counter attacked..
Hi. I have half acre off grid property (rural almost suburban area) where i work and spend a lot of spare time from april to september. But during winter i would visit it once a day just to feed and check out my guardian. Can i keep one rottie that way or i have to take two? It sounds harsh but I need a dog for purpose it's reality. Thank you
Where I live is never too cold or too hot outside. I don't like to bring dogs inside the house. I'm looking for a breed that doesn't care for the inside, and stays out to watch over the house, and jog with. What breed do you recommend?
dogs acclimate to what they're used to. even poodles can spend the winter in the cold outisde freezing winter IF THEY HAVE DOG HOUSE. i knew a rott that was raised inside and couldn't cope with any extremes of temperature. my rott could not cope with real cold, but if it was not so cold it was real fun to watch her tunneling in the snow and tracking small game in the snow. so much of dog personality has to do with the way they're raised from puppyhood. you want a dog that doesn't want to be inside? most every dog you get will want to be with you wherever you are. you are the pack. you are the provider of food, and the pack leader. that means a lot to a dog. it's in humans too, but fitting into the pack and being a part of the pack is real important to dogs.
I agree with you 100%. I bought a GSD because I thought that as I get older a rott would be too "heavy" to handle! I WAS WRONG! Although my GSD is very nice and loving, working lines because I used to do protection work, or French Ring with my rotties and wanted to do so with a GSD. There is no comparison. Barks all the time, too energetic for me (I'm 74) and very dominant...extremely dog aggressive. (never was attacked by a dog since I got him at 2 months old)...My next dog will be a rottweiler for sure.
I want to have a Rott but I'm worried about the aggression thing especially that I have a one year old baby and I personly know osneone who lost his 3 year old girl after she got attacked by their own Rott, is is there a risk that the Rott might be agressive?
Thanks for clarifying at the onset that you like brachycephalic heads over dolichocephalic heads. Rottweilers, Dogo Argentinos, Cane Corsos, Fila Brasilieros, etc. are examples of brachycephalic guard dog breeds. German Shepherds, Doberman Pinchers, Japanese and American Akitas, Beaucerons, Belgian Malinois, Groenendaels, and Tervurens, etc. are examples of dolichocephalic guard dog breeds. People like us, who have livestock guardian dogs (such as Kuvasz), are Mesocephalic (Half and half/ moitié moitié) dog breed lovers. Pakistani Bully Kuttas are an example of this category also.
Yeah these videos really made me think about why I like the dog breeds that I like and whyI want to own the ones that I want to own. Very good introspective thoughts coming from these videos!
As a owner of two wl gsd‘s I‘ma tell you not to worry at all man. Not finding a dog aesthetically pleasing isn‘t bad at all. GSD‘s and rotties are both awesome but just like you, I just don‘t find the rottie to fit me aesthetically and I need the high drive and energy of my shepherds. Good video 🤙🏻
I understand how the German Shepherd is not for everyone, I found that they aren't for me, I owned two of them at different times and I will not get another one they don't fit me at all. Honestly the Rottweiler is high on my list as far as dogs I would own and I absolutely plan on having one someday in the near future.
My German shepherd kept the special operations police from jumping my fence to get into the neighboring house had to come around the front and ask me to lock him up. Had both breeds cant agree on that one.
I’ve also had both breeds. Wouldn’t trade my Rottweiler for anything. My sister currently has two German Shepards from a breeder that sells most of her dogs to police or military. They are a bit aggressive. Great guard dogs, but they can’t handle my rottweiler. She’s just way too powerful and probably the smartest dog I’ve ever had. I tell my sister that my dog may not move as fast as hers, but she doesn’t have to move for anybody.
@@andyb7057 chill the rottweiler are surely stronger than the GSD but not that stronger look at the Eastern European German Shepherd the weigh 100+lbs with straight and athletic backs. Athleticism makes a big difference in confrontation that's why big cats like leopards who are of similar weight to a wolf can kill it
I am German Shepherd guy and I agree 100% with your points in regards to the angled back on GSD . I only buy my dogs from breeders in Europe mostly farm dogs with straight backs. They are bigger, heavier, and with better temperament. Way larger than police K9s. I absolutely think the show dogs are a disgrace on any breed . Check the working line border collie for reference and you will see how different the working line is compared to the dogs we have in the USA. It is the same on every breed, even Dobermans are heavier in Europe instead of the skinny ones we have here. I like your dog and thank you for the videos.
Love these videos !.You always have a valid point of view..A German Shepard was my first dog as a child!.My father was a police officer..but the Rottweiler was the dog for me as well !OH and you have a great voice for doing these documentries LOVE FROM TEAM ROTTIE!!
I've had one of each. My next dog would be a Rottweiler because they don't shed as much and aren't as high energy. My GSD was something else though. Super smart. Super athletic. I didn't train him to fetch underwater. I just discovered that he could.
I love both. The German shepherd has always been my favorite breed, with the rottie coming in at 2nd. Both great working breeds, can’t go wrong with either
German Shepherd not a natural protection dog? I've had 7 and I find this comment hilarious and not true in the least, as they will sacrifice their life for yours. They are also super, super bright dogs that are totally devoted to their people. I do agree about the US show- lines , and personally would never want one ( unless I rescued it!) Personally, I love dogs that resemble the wolf the most. Check out Czechoslovakian wolf dogs and Sarloos dogs. They're gorgeous!
If you want a protection dog, all statistical values long term numbers will reflect German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are by far the best choice anyone can make for defensive, offensive and protection animals, although I owned a purebred Rottweiler for 14 years quite long lived for a Rott he was so much disabled due to hip problems the last 2 years I kept him alive too long. This guy loved his dog which did I, but from an objective point of view......protection, security German Shepherds or Malinois, the numbers are still out on South African Boer Boers.
I agree with you about the GSD, as an owner of a working line GSD, i can say they are high-energy, high-maintenance dogs, i personally love the manic-energy and I find I enjoy the push of them, but the health and genetic lines of the breed are crazy! The GSD world is very corrupt, and its hard to get a dog that well balanced, and you see a lot of people pick up working line pups that become unstable adults or show-line pups with no drive to work. The GSD world needs a real overhaul, that being said I love the breed, and love owning GSDs, but I do agree with your assessments.
Patrick Montenegro mental stimulation is important with them as well. That amount of exercise would be fine They love to please so basic obedience training everyday helps too.
@@robertspinks835 I really just asked because another video had a commenter that said an hour is not enough and they sleep for 30 minutes and are back at it again. I have a German shepherd mix and was wondering if a purebred working line is that much different. I combine fetch and training into one since she has a lot of ball drive.
The Rottie is a rue member of the family happy on his own from time to time not always requiring full on attention as other high energy breeds. Personally Rotties are unique just the origin of this breed being a Roman gaurd not to mention this dog knows no fear when it comes to protecting my family pure instinct even untrained.
There are plenty of WGSL Shepherds with excellent hips and elbows. Also IPO champs. I would not discount a WGSL as a great pet. The lower drive is preferable for many.
I can respect your opinion. like you said this is the dog for you and your lifestyle. You still showed alot of love to the GSD. I have a working line sable GSD just like in the video. That look has always appealed to me more then the short snout. Both amazing dogs, you cant go wrong.
Never would i pick a rott over a german shepherd for family/home protection.. i get the opinion part though everyone has their opinion on looks... if that was the main reason okay.. but sounds like u needed family loyal and home protection dog as key.. and that is like the main genetic strong points of german shepherd lol.. they have far better earns and smell than a rotty and are always in protection mode more so than a rott.. a witty intruder could sneak past a rotty... good luck sneaking past a german shepherd in their home.... not guna happen they will smell u before u even make it up the driveway and be on you like glue
I got my ROTTIE puppy and I learns later that the breaded imported there Dogs form Germany and Belgium. He’s a hand full and doesn’t like other dogs but I love him
I went from cane corso to a shepherd, so i totally get this and agree. One thing I wanna mention, a proper show dog will go through IPO so I think you should distinguish CKC show dogs and IPO competition dogs.
I'm already regretting getting my boyfriend the GSD puppy for his birthday... a week ago. I've literally never met a dog as whiny and crybaby as this dog. She's sweet and cute, I love the slightly wolfy appearance and her tan points. But she's driving me nuts. I have 2 boys of my own, a pit Catahoula mix and pure pit boy. Aesthetically, I prefer the molosser breed types like them. Those large heads. 😍 Rotties being a top pick. For sure, one day, my next dog will be a Rottweiler or an American Bully.
From having many GSD I can tell you and anyone that just like the Rottie, the GSD absolutely has a natural instinct to protect home. Especially at night, it is alert to a freakin pin drop! Each and every one had a natural and keen instinct to protect the home. A Rottie will be my next dog though!
Good for you bud. You're entitled to your choice but don't knock the Rottie. The Rottie is a rue member of the family happy on his own from time to time not always requiring full on attention as other high energy breeds. Personally Rotties are unique just the origin of this breed being a Roman gaurd not to mention this dog knows no fear when it comes to protecting my family pure instinct even untrained.
Show lines is definitely not what you will want; with respect to the working lines once you get the right blood lines you will get more than what you want in a home protector. But the rottie is not a bad choice.
i have a WL GSD but i have to agree that they are just a lot more more work than any other dog bc they are so intelligent. also, YES, the differences btw show line and WL are huge and not just physically. they're like two breeds almost, their characters are just so different.
Isn’t that funny how the “head shape” & aesthetics makes such a difference in what kind of dogs we “like” or “don’t really like”? All of them are absolutely good boys & can fit some families but it’s strange how much just the appearance of a dog makes a difference
The working line German Shepherd is the ultimate home protector, particularly those from Czech and East German breeding lines. They are naturally protective, territorial, fearless and dominant. The Rotties I've seen are mostly lazy and affectionate. Working line German Shepherds aren't affectionate to strangers, and barely show affection for their owners. A German Shepherd can go all day and handle extreme sub zero temperatures, whereas the Rottie cannot. There are plenty of videos of German Shepherds dominating Rotties, because it's their nature to lead. I don't recommend them for people looking to have family pet because they need socializing, tasks, DAILY exercise and proper training or they can be dangerous. I have a Czech male and a German show female and the differences between them are huge. German show line don't have the drastically curved backs and mangled up hind quarters of the American show line, by the way.
I love this series, but I understand after a few videos it starts to get a little repetitive. If you are doing a few more, maybe Rhodesian Ridgeback, Great Dane, Am Staff, English Mastiff?
to me xx out great dane is a no brainer. a great dane is like the hummingbird of the dog world. they eat their own weight in cows every hour. but if you own a large cattle ranch or if you're the prince of wales great dane might be a good choice for you. otherwise they will eat you out of house and home.
He kept it real and should be good. Hopefully the offended stayed to the end and heard him say the GSD is way more intelligent, athletic, and faster than a Rottweiler. Going off purpose and aesthetics is what every dog person should do. Love your dog before they get in your door. I can see how long hair upkeep and a potentially larger genetic gene pool of degradation would put people off a GSD. I'm personally researching the Dutch Shepherd as my next breed coming from the loved Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
I love my GSD working-line, straight back. However, I prefer a Doberman Pitcher over the Rottweiler. Far more intelligent, very loyal, easier to train and make the best guard dog.
This is a good channel that always has good and interesting content. However, it would be better with longer videos since they have been so short recently . But i can understand why they are short... its hard to upload this good content very often.
I have both breeds at the moment. I can’t choose one over the other but some of the information you give is totally wrong. If you own the gsd from. Reputable breeder chances your dog to have health issues ie hip dysplasie etc won’t come out. Plus, all big dogs have the tendency to have hip dysplasie if they are not matched correctly while mating. House protection is also what a german Shepherd is also good at.
I think these videos are excellent as I don’t think enough people put this much thought into breed choices and it’s so important. I would love a Rottweiler but I know it’s too dominant a breed for me so I will just enjoy Roscoe.
Great series of videos, lots of things come into consideration when choosing a dog and i think it’s great of you to highlight it. Sometimes people choose their dogs for the wrong reasons and it ends bad for the human, the dog and even the breed. Right now I know two people who went for border collies based on looks and boy was that a mistake😅
So, long hair, high energy and pointy head, ok ... SOME Working line gsd's are better at home protection work than SOME rottweilers, it's not the breed, it depends from dog to dog..
But he's comparing why he chose the breed, not the dog itself. There's always acceptions but it's not smart to choose a breed you don't prefer or are unsuited for, on the off chance it's capable of what your needs are. That's actually a cool idea if he told us (if he got to pick from the litter) why he chose Roscoe, what characteristics made him drawn to that specific pup vs the rest.
there is no dispute over whether or not a particular dog can do some particular task better than such and such. even a barky chihuahua is going to afford your home and family with a high degree of security. give this guy a break. focus. listen to what he has to say. the subject matter is his choice of breed. maybe you can afford 2 or 3 or maybe even 4 dogs. but if you can afford only one and one only dog how will you choose?
Why I can’t figure out why that all, the videos I see of German Shepherds in America the dogs seem to be small like over here in Europe or dogs are much bigger I have 2 GSD and one is 29inches and weighs 108 pounds the other is 28 inches and weighs 105 pounds all the ones I seem to see in America are like 24 inches and 88 pounds but I do know that some Europe lines are much bigger than American also I live in Ireland. Also American show lines those poor breeds disgrace what they did to the breed.

Think about it- Can a kid defend your house/property? No. Strike one for practicality. ;)
Can a rottweiler puppy defend your house? Nah can a teenager shoot a intruder yes..
@@Arcticpagan sure rotty can gaurd the house over durg high teens
Modern problems require modern solutions
The show lines of GS are a disgrace. Shame on the AKC. Function over form! Especially in an animal that becomes part of your life and family. Why risk the health of the breed for a "look"?
markw999 YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!
Look at the pug.
Aay Kay, I am getting a working line GSD, and I love this comment!! Mine will be doing protection, advanced obedience, and agility.
A have a solid working line Czech/DDR GSD and your comments sum these dogs up perfectly
Yes DDR/Czechoslovakian lines are the best
Aay Kay I have a friend who is a cop and works with mallanois, they are fantastic dogs aswell but in my opinion a working dog needs to work, for real, all kinds of problems come when they don’t. I go as far as to say that certain breeds shouldn’t be allowed to be pets. It’s a potential disaster for everyone involved.
Aay Kay ...good thoughtful and true comment about working gsds...also true, is that they will follow you to the bathroom, no matter how small the space. For me, the best dog breed, period....for 20 years.
I love the honesty of this guy on these videos. It's a real shame there won't be any more : (
My GSD is 6yr working line. I love him to death. But after him, I'm getting a Rottweiler. The biggest problems I have with my current GSD is his HIGH energy level and the amount of fur that will enter your life is insane!
Can you ever chill without it whining? Is the coat all over clothing furniture etc?
@@dirkdiggler6082 Dude... The fur is everywhere. You will always be finding it in your drinks, all over your clothing. EVERYWHERE. GSDs chill when they are sleeping. lol
@@SeanHowell Damn it. Exactly what i expected lol
I have a cane corso. There is no hair in my house.
Good luck!
But yes, the German shepherd are so damn beautiful.

Hello, how did you teach her to leave things alone and be protective when you want her to? is there any videos on youtube you recommend?
Well said. My GSD working line, is always switched on and suspicious of everyone unless I tell her to claim down. If anything, GSD are overly protective which can overkill at times.

German Shepherds is the best bread you can ever have
I’ve raised two rescue, albeit full GSDs, one GSD/Rottweiler hybrid.
I actually love these series of videos

@@Gwyllgi Apart from size, I dont see any reason why GSD is not a good dog for property protection. As I said, I have had both dogs and both only for property protection and both did their jobs well. Thank you
I do respect your personal opinion. Even though I’m a GSD lover or any other shepherds.good luck with the one you choose. Shalom

I like your dog and thank you for the videos.
i own both and gsd is best.for aggression training, activity and guarding. Rotti is much more low energy and not as alert. i love them both.
Love these videos !.You always have a valid point of view..A German Shepard was my first dog as a child!.My father was a police officer..but the Rottweiler was the dog for me as well !OH and you have a great voice for doing these documentries LOVE FROM TEAM ROTTIE!!
I agree, he does have an excellent narrator's voice!
I’m Loving the videos, Bruh! Keep bringing’em!✊🏿
I do agree about the US show- lines , and personally would never want one ( unless I rescued it!)
Personally, I love dogs that resemble the wolf the most. Check out Czechoslovakian wolf dogs and Sarloos dogs. They're gorgeous!
Pls anyone tell me I have a 5y oldsis and I am choosing the dog should I choos a rot or a german
😂😂😂😂boer boers? Do you mean boerboels??
I agree with you about the GSD, as an owner of a working line GSD, i can say they are high-energy, high-maintenance dogs, i personally love the manic-energy and I find I enjoy the push of them, but the health and genetic lines of the breed are crazy! The GSD world is very corrupt, and its hard to get a dog that well balanced, and you see a lot of people pick up working line pups that become unstable adults or show-line pups with no drive to work. The GSD world needs a real overhaul, that being said I love the breed, and love owning GSDs, but I do agree with your assessments.
Is an hour of fetch and a 30 minute walk a day enough for a working line german shepherd?
Patrick Montenegro mental stimulation is important with them as well.
That amount of exercise would be fine
They love to please so basic obedience training everyday helps too.
@@robertspinks835 I really just asked because another video had a commenter that said an hour is not enough and they sleep for 30 minutes and are back at it again. I have a German shepherd mix and was wondering if a purebred working line is that much different. I combine fetch and training into one since she has a lot of ball drive.
Just do why you chose a Rottweiler over a Presa Canario, please ! These are great videos!
The Rottie is a rue member of the family happy on his own from time to time not always requiring full on attention as other high energy breeds. Personally Rotties are unique just the origin of this breed being a Roman gaurd not to mention this dog knows no fear when it comes to protecting my family pure instinct even untrained.
And .... if you don't train that need he has to defend you he will end up hurting someone.
There are plenty of WGSL Shepherds with excellent hips and elbows. Also IPO champs. I would not discount a WGSL as a great pet. The lower drive is preferable for many.
Do a video on healthiest large breed dogs (100 lbs+)
Thank you I really enjoy the why I chose the rottweiler videos keep up the great work.
When i was growing up i saw mostly these 2 dog breeds.
From having many GSD I can tell you and anyone that just like the Rottie, the GSD absolutely has a natural instinct to protect home. Especially at night, it is alert to a freakin pin drop! Each and every one had a natural and keen instinct to protect the home. A Rottie will be my next dog though!
I enjoy your stuff better than anything I've heard on the subject of dogs.
I will always choose German Shepherd over any other breed!!!! And most definitely over a Rottweiler!
For me there are not better than rottweiler and gsd
Shepherd Love YEPPER
Working line GSDs are my breed of choice. But I love Rottweilers too. Both are excellent choices.
I have a German Shepherd and I breed Rottweilers. Both are fantastic dogs.
i have a WL GSD but i have to agree that they are just a lot more more work than any other dog bc they are so intelligent.
also, YES, the differences btw show line and WL are huge and not just physically. they're like two breeds almost, their characters are just so different.
I chose the German shepherd over the rottweiler because he is more versatile.
How?
He kept it real and should be good. Hopefully the offended stayed to the end and heard him say the GSD is way more intelligent, athletic, and faster than a Rottweiler. Going off purpose and aesthetics is what every dog person should do. Love your dog before they get in your door. I can see how long hair upkeep and a potentially larger genetic gene pool of degradation would put people off a GSD. I'm personally researching the Dutch Shepherd as my next breed coming from the loved Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
GSD outperforms the Rotty in every division with the exception of the bite-force.
But off course you don’t want to be bitten by either of them.
Rottweiler is the more powerful breed
Dunno about others but I am really liking these "Why I chose a Rottweiler over.." videos.
My Rottweiler didn't protect my home at all it all depends on the dog period not the breed
How much did you pay for your Rottweiler?
Indeed. But generally speaking the Rottweiler does have an inherent need to defend. Unfortunately it's why many are given up.
@@dylvasey hello!!!!🙌🏽
@@Happyflower_gyal Hello right back atcha!
@@dylvasey lol what kills me is how he thinks this puppy of his is going to be this big protector 🤦🏽♀️
I love my GSD working-line, straight back. However, I prefer a Doberman Pitcher over the Rottweiler. Far more intelligent, very loyal, easier to train and make the best guard dog.
I 100% agree with your opinions on the German Shepard.
This is a good channel that always has good and interesting content. However, it would be better with longer videos since they have been so short recently
.
Its weird, there are a lot of breeds I admire greatly for different reasons but wouldn't own myself like GSD, Dutchie, husky, Cane Corso, boxer, ect.
I like your comparison videos and agree with your choice.
