I just lost my female Rottie, She lived 14 years and 6 weeks. She was a smaller dog at 81 lbs., and had no health issues(besides arthritis during the last couple years of her life.) She was my 24/7 companion, I miss her immensely, not everyone gets that much time with these wonderful dogs.

I've had a female and currently have a male. Our female was the best damn dog we've ever had. Perfect in every way. Our male is absolutely amazing but more goofy and licks way more than our female did. Our female Rottie never barked. She watched. Our male has to announce his presence everytime the doorbell rings or someone knocks. Both dogs were/are exceptional with our children and any child. I love both males and females but our female was that once in a lifetime Rottie.

I disagree. A temperament of a dog has a lot to do with the training and personality. That being said I’ve always had male dogs as they tend to be more playful and affectionate. My male rotties I have now are both playful, sweet, lap dogs. My husband tends to have female Dobermans and while they mostly have been sweet female dogs in my experience are more independent and reserved. Again a lot has to do with how I train, socialize, and select my personal dogs. I am currently typing this underneath one of my rotties who is laying across me in the recliner. Great dogs

It broke her heart, and she slept in our room for the next six years. We currently have a male that had been neglected. We adopted him when he was 2.4 years, he weighed only 29 kgs and had sores all over his legs. We have had him twelves months and considering his start to life he has the best nature and is the most loving. We have 10 young grand children and we were concerned, but he has proven time and again that he loves kids. He just loves being loved.

The male (and me) had two velocities, walking and running, the female had three, walking, running and speeeeeed. I would run with them, me and the male would be side by side, she would turn on the third gear and vrumm :)
The male lived to the age of 12, he became my best friend, the female only had 9 years with us,, she died early with cancer, I miss them everyday.

I got my female Rottweiler when she was 5 months old. She had been returned because she was too aggressive. We got her and realized she needs a LOT of exercise and socialization. Within days of getting her and letting her get a lot of exercise and socialization, she has been the most perfect dog I have ever known. She is super smart, super obedient, and well-mannered. She never shows aggression anymore. She will be 4 in January 2023, She still requires tons of exercise and hasn't shown any signs of slowing down so take it seriously regarding exercise and socialization. If you can provide that you are golden, if you can't then consider another breed.

I lost my female I her tenth year, male tragically younger.
For longer lifespan I used to live in South Louisiana half the year knew a couple with a pair of Kangals. Turkish flock guardians. They had a HUGE property & they made fantastic estate guardians!
While they couldn’t be taken off leash ANYWHERE, they were MASSIVE dogs who it turns out after millennia of hardcore culling live on AVERAGE 13-15 years here in North America & Britain!
They’re great with kids & anyone properly introduced! Theirs attacked & drove off some wild hogs his wife had surprised one time out in the woods.

More difficult to controle and to obey orders, and sometimes try to be dominant even on his owner if not trained properly.
Also males are not safe around strangers if not trained properly.

I've had three rotties over the years, two males, one female. Here's what I’ve learned and what I’d advice based on my experience.
      - A happy hottie is the world’s best big dog - hands down. A happy rottie can do more for you than any other dog. An unhappy hottie is … a big, powerful, unhappy dog, NOT a good idea. So, how to have a happy one - pretty simple …
      - a rottie is a naturally social dog, a pack dog. Remember, for the Romans they herded cattle in the mountains, and ‘babysat’ the barnyard. They weren’t isolated as guard dogs - they had people around, and big animals, and small animals … they love all this. A happy hottie is one who has been socialized with others (animals and people). And they want to ‘babysit their pack’- including the neighborhood kids, small animals, young animals … they want to babysit and ‘safety patrol’ - that’s their play.
      - So .. how to have a happy hottie:
      1. SOCIALIZE (you’ll see the repeated, lol)… a young rottie is a big, active, goofy dog - they are puppies until they are 3+, I swear. So, socializing one can wear you out, especially if other people are afraid of rotties (and some likely will be). But - DON’T give up on this, don’t stop. Find places to socialize - a young rottie in a dog park is a happy, loving, social dog. A young rottie with kids is soooo happy - but they can knock a toddler over with their love, so you, the owner, *be in charge* of him/her. BTW, kids love rotties, naturally, because the rottie loves them. I used to tell people about my rottie(s): he/she will protect everyone, your safest part of the day is when my dog is around, but I AM him/her protector - his/her master, and he/she knows it … and that suits the dog just fine. If if you’re in charge, and socialize your rottie, your dog will be happy, and the whole neighborhood will come to love him/her, and appreciate him/her. Your rottie will also want to babysit young and small animals, who will tend to like them - they ‘get’ the rotties’ social vibe. That’s what I’m getting at here, actually - don’t keep your dog away from kids or small animals - the rottie will naturally love and babysit them (I have heard of rotties going after cats or small animals, but I’ve never witnessed it, ever - just the opposite … just get this started with your dog when he/she is young … then, even around a ‘grumpy little dog (or cat), the happy rottie will have ‘the patience of Job’ - he/she is determined to win everyone over, eventually.
      3. BTW, rotties don’t (naturally) bite …. they’re not ‘pinchers’ (biters) like German Shepherds naturally are. The rottie has no ‘prey drive’, that’s how they were bred. The rottie was bred to herd the cattle with his/her powerful chest, not by nipping/biting (in order to not-ruin ‘the meat’ of the cattle’s legs. A rottie has a soft mouth with a big (overly big lol), wet tongue - just like all mastiff-type dogs.
      4. So … will a rottie protect? Yes, of course. Fortunately, they have wonderful instincts on ‘who or what to protect against’ - better instincts than you do in fact. They will ‘get between’, in between ‘their pack’ and anything they consider a threat … and they’ll control the situation using their big chest, or by grabbing - not biting. Will a young rottie grab (not bite) your arm in play, yes, all the time. Also, will a rottie ‘block’ a dog running after a ball - yes, that’s called their ‘blocking the calf from running off’ game.
      5. Rotties are fearless, and seem impervious to pain. A happy hottie WILL do its job - babysitting.
      6. As far as owning a male vs female hottie. My experience is either can be dominant, or not-dominant. My female was a dominant dog, which was great because she was only 80 pounds … she never lost a ‘scrap’ (her scraps were always to save another dog’s butt, she always protected the underdog), she’d used her ‘I’m the mom’ vibe. And I had a big male rottie once who was 150+ pounds, and NOT-dominant. This was great too … he was so sweet, but at the dog park (we went daily when he was young) his favorite ‘play’ became - to search out the ’dog fights’ (the park we went to was big, 100 dogs or so most afternoons) and to get in between the scrappers and ‘calm down’ the aggressor … and at this he never failed. The regulars at the park loved it when my dog showed up - so did the puppies who’d follow him around, playing in his wake (heck, he’d even guard the squirrels at the regular-park we’d walk in).
Bottom Line - get a rottie - my very first dog was a rottie … it’s just best to get your first one as a puppy, and SOCIALIZE, SOCIALIZE, SOCIALIZE … then socialize some more. And take him/her to obedience training (which is the case for every young dog), to establish yourself as his/her ‘pack leader’.

My last female would have been 13 this month and we lost her in March. She was 73 lbs on average. She was 22.5" at the shoulder. My current female is going to be about the same. However energy requirements can also be do to breeding. Was it from a working line? Working line have much more energy.

My parents recently got rotts. Started with a female then got a male, genetic siblings but different litters.when we went to visit the first time her intelligence and instinct really surprised me. Female is ultimate big sister, when out for walks she will force me away from traffic if she sees a car even though I'm 6 foot 4. if she deemed my kids to be too far from the house she'd try to block them and nudge them back to the house( they live on a 2 acre plot) even when they were playing fetch she's refuse to get the ball until she got them closer to the house. We've had lots of dogs over the years but her instincts amazed me. Meanwhile the male is now one. And is my mom's baby. A hand fed lapdog. Big soft cuddle monster

I have a little over a year old male. We completed a basic obedience class, and more often than not, the instructor would pick my boy to use as the example dog. because he was so eager to please(this was when he was about 7-9 months old). He still exhibits that readiness to please a few months later. The only thing i can think of to gripe about with this breed/my dog is that if left unsupervised in the yard they will dig and dig and dig. I let him out while I was getting ready for work one morning, came back 20-30 mins later with a legitimate crater in my yard from him digging. It took 2 40lb bags of topsoil to fill the hole that he dug in such a short time. Nonetheless, im out in the yard with him whenever i let him out now

My 3 boys were super obedient and could be walked through the most challenging environment off lead without any issues. But not my Luna. Oh hell no! She is like a loveable naughty child and constantly pushes her boundaries - and will faux growl at me if I chastise her!! But she is super clingy too, so you got that bit spot on. Gotta love those big old goofy love monsters 🐾🐾😍😍🥰🥰

  • @MeztliZen

We had two rotties, a male and a female.
The male, who is more my dad’s dog, is a HUGE marshmallow. He acts big and tough from a distance but when people get close enough he becomes a puddle. And kids? He ADORES them. He likes people but if we walk through a crowd with children in it and he’ll dodge everyone and head straight for the kids. When my niece was smaller she’d cuddle with him on the floor, she even tried to dress him up once in her glitter costume jacket because I quote, “you told me you wanna be a dragon.” My brother’s girlfriend’s small daughter played with his jowls the other day he could care less. But I’ve yet to see any protective or suspicious anything toward strangers. I’m hoping he’ll step up if need be. I will say though, I slipped on some snow once and hurt my knee when I was walking him at my job. I had given a shout of pain and he immediately came to check on me then proceeded to lay down beside me with his head on my chest. That was nice.
The female rottie was my dog, my baby, and we lost her in August of 2020. She was fifteen and we happened to suspect her leg was fractured so when we took the X-ray we found the fracture and discovered bone cancer had eaten away a majority of the other bone. But I knew it was time. She was tired. So we got some pain killers, I cooked her a bison steak that night, and the next day sent her on her way. But I digress. She, she was the protective one. She watched people like a hawk and stuck right by me. If you acted suspicious she’d catch it and just watch, waiting to see what your deal was. She was also really low-key. After she turned two she mellowed out so much and could care less about exercising. She would play chase with the male around the yard but she was perfectly content to just hanging out. She wasn’t super big on small children, it was the loudness and no understanding of personal space that she didn’t like. But once my niece was older she was fine. We would take her to go hiking years ago and I remember one time she put on the breaks and refused to go up the trail. She didn’t make a sound, only gazed up the trail intently. My family took one glance at each other and immediately left. We’re not stupid. If she said no thanks we said no thanks. I honestly don’t know if I’ll get another dog, more less another rottie. I don’t think I have the heart or something. I miss that dog so much to the point of tears sometimes. I just don’t know.

I swore I would never get a dog after him because no dog would ever measure up to him. I decided to try a female. Omg she is needing attention 24/7 and if you take something away from her or don't give her attention right then and now she nips hard. She tries to please in every other way but she is a handful. She just turned 4 months old. She starts school tomorrow and hope for the best 🙏. She is part of family now and love her. My son got one of the males from same litter and he is more easy going. I guess it all depends on the dog itself and the owner and family he/she is around. Best breed ever though.

Nope it depends on the owners just. Obviously if you are adopting a dog that's older they most likely will come with problems and will take more effort to train them properly to remove the bad habits! But receiving puppies there's literally no excuse! They can be thought exactly how to behave because rottweilers are one of the smartest breeds out there! Putting your dog/puppy into a "school" like you say is just for lazy people who can't bother there ar$e to learn how to properly train a dog! Lol... Its 2023 ffs everything about dog psychology and how to train a dog is out there online! 😂... Save your money do some proper research and learn how to train/teach your dog yourself... Don't be offended.. The truth hurts lol might come off as harsh but it's just the facts

    I’ve had two.
Female much more intense, less outgoing but a DREAM TO TRAIN!! Never went through a destructive phase as a puppy. Loved play time & especially cuddle time! Not crazy about kids, but tolerated them. Quick trigger with any sounds she didn’t like at night or anyone at the gate or door. Went into Rottweiler On Patrol Mode very quickly.
Male: HUGE, burly bundle of easygoing playful joy! Didn’t just TOLERATE kids, seeked out their attention & was a fantastically patient big toy!
Male, indifferent to cats. Great guardian but very confidently calm about it.
Male SLOWER TO LEARN LOL! FAR SLOWER… Not so much obstinate as ALWAYS wanting to play & considering ANY occasion an opportunity to play!
Despite the bad raps male guard type dogs tend to get, both my female Rottie & my female GSD were FAR MORE intense, with my GSD being very dominant/dog aggressive & needing to be held in check. BOTH were quick to “heat up” & lock on to dogs or people they found suspect. Both making intense eye contact seemingly waiting for a wrong move; my GSD with that head & tail held confidently & proudly high.
ADORED THEM BOTH!! So intensely loving! It’s a pick ‘em for “best”. She a dream come true to train, always attentive & awaiting a command! Him, a cheesy cornball who EVERYONE who met him ADORED!

Don't know much about my female rottie's lineage's performance regarding life span (Though it is a purebreed), but any rottie i have heard here in Turkey (regardless if they were purebred or not and they were generally fed with mediocre kibbles like royal canin or pro plan) has lived north of 12 years so i am still a bit confused how their average life span is still considered 8-10 years. I know this is like an average value which covers most of the big dog breeds such as rotties, Kangals etc. (my friend's female Kangal has lived 10 years that was fed with mostly acana and orijen). Ofc my own life experience cannot abolish the worldwide statistics but i have asked any person who owns or had owned a rottie in their lives (8-10 people) and 12+ years response was 100%. None of those people has uttered -12 years of life. Cheers

If humans had the character of animals, how beautiful the world would be.

In my experience it's the opposite as far as attitude.. both my females could be moody and my male has never had a bad day in his life, very happy go lucky 🤷

My Sheba Rottweiler is going to live forever. And that's that. lol. I swear a Rottweiler is the best dog ever. She's a big o baby. But watch your step coming towards me.

Hahahaha so TRUE! All my Rotties always have one eye on me and if anyone besides my family gets too close look out, they are super protective.

@@craigdilullo9491 yes sir ! She has me wrapped around her big o paw, but she'll protect her daddy till her last breath. Man I've never had a Rottweiler more because of the power in their bite ( god forbid) but I tell you this,my baby is the most loving always want hugs and kisses. I'm thinking about breeding her,but there's no way I could keep 5-9 babies, I just couldn't part from them. LOL

@@Kent-nx8xm hahahaha I hear ya, I considered doing same with my female but I didn't for the same reason. I wouldn't been able to let any of em go and I couldn't have a house full of rotties although I'd love it lol. My female would lay under kitchen table and if she got up quick she would lift the table off the ground lol. My male now is super attached to me, everyone else could be home but if I go out he howls till I come home. As I type this he's asleep under my recliner! They are above and beyond the best dog breed IMO period. I'd never get a different breed!

    They need 3 solid walks a day. 20-45 minutes. Dogs are wanderers. They need the walk and leash training/behaviour training that comes with it. And from years 1-6 they need another Activity as well. Playing around, tracking, puzzle solving, trick learning or whatever you want. My experience is that from 7 up they become a bit of a couch potato. =}
