@Daxrcy I would have to disagree on that, as the fanservice didn’t digress after the fort episode. Many people didn’t come into the anime with the wrong idea in mind. Episode 2 was solely based around Gojo measuring Marin’s anatomy and then getting flustered on and off during that one entire episode. At the start of episode 3, Gojo has a wet dream and Kitagawa speaking with a lewd tone of voice. The fanservice kept interrupting the plot when it was getting pretty good. I don’t know if we weee watching the same show, but the fanservice progressed more and more evidently than you think. Or if you’re reading the manga.

The anime itself in episode 1 didn’t seem too bad; as Kitagawa Marin seemed to have somewhat of a rationale than usual. And it really showed how mature she was (to me at least; at the time). But after that one episode, her whole character took a 180 degree turn and she started becoming less intelligent and more basic minded with no understanding of what she is doing half of the time. From what I remember vaguely, in episode 2, she was stopping down, to show Gojo the part of her cosplay she managed to make and she insist on telling him to look away without giving him any warning she was gonna change. I see that happen throughout the anime time to time. These small details makes it hard to find it humorous, as Gojo lets anything go and gets horny when he’s flustered and bashful by Marin and females. It doesn’t even make any sense to me.

Why wouldn't there be? There are as many personality types for girls as there are girls in the world. Marin seems like a decently realistic depiction of an extroverted female weebs and I have a friend who's very similar to her, besides knowing 2 other girls who also share a lot of personality traits with Marin.

Many cosplayers are conscious of their looks and bodies to be able to fit into the costumes they create, they learn how to properly do makeup to enhance their looks for cosplay, and they’re all weebs. Look at cosplayers like Bukkitbrown, akrcos, tenli_cos, kuroosimp.cos There are so many cosplayers who are weebs that care about their looks, nerdy and while idk about their personalities, I’ve seen some of akrcos streams and they’re pretty down to earth, bukkitbrown is quite adorable It’s like ppl forget that female weebs exist like y’all, we exist too😭😭🤷♀️😅

Not gonna lie, the way Gojo acts around girls and gets flustered, a common trope seen in most of many harem and ecchi shows that is painful to just watch, however Dress Up Darling actually does these clichés really well, and actually kind of well executed in context of the show. Also thank you for sharing your high school experiences, believe me mine wasn't exactly glamorous either but it was around that time I started getting into anime and manga more seriously though.
I love how he gets over it not by gushing blood out of his nose and the show cutting to 20 minutes later, but by him deliberately putting himself in "professional" mode and using his intense focus to push through the embarrassment. You know, like how a real person might handle it. It's so refreshing to see that BOTH leads have real depth and never become a walking collection of tropes like MOST slice of life characters in lesser series.

Just looks at cosplayers, they are extremely attractive and very dedicated to their weeb hobbies, ie, cosplay There are even some anime UA-camrs who have attractive girlfriends that are huge weebs and do cosplay. It’s rlly not that rare a premise It’s actually what makes this show kind of realistic Weeb cosplay couples would find this anime extremely relatable. I found this anime relatable in some ways too. I’m a female who loves cosplay, I admire so many cosplayers and seeing the way Marin gushed and fawned over cosplay, anime characters and the cosplayers themselves was so relatable it made me want to burst in happiness. Marin isn’t shy about her body, and she can be perverted, which I found relatable. She’s a smiley person who loves to laugh. Just, almost everything about her was so relatable and so enjoyable to see on a screen it was pure euphoria for me watching this show. I myself am aromantic asexual (meaning no sexual/romantic attraction) so the romance part wasn’t relatable for me but was still very nice to watch, just because I can’t find ppl sexually/romantically attractive doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy seeing ppl fall in love. I just rlly love this show so much, the attention to detail for cosplay and marin’s own behaviour made it such a joy to watch, even fanservice most of the time makes me uncomfortable but this show was so beautifully animated and the fanservice was actually enjoyable to watch for me.

I was telling myself that same things, based on the title, the genre, and the bland-as-hell sounding synopsis. But I finally caved and started watching it after hearing so much praise for it, and I ended up binging the entire season in a single afternoon... and enjoyed it far more than almost anything I've watched recently. If you can overlook Episode 2's "fanservice" and get to the actual interplay between the 2 leads - Episodes 3-7, for the most part - you can see if it's really up your alley or not. TL;DR: As someone who went into the first episode expecting very little, I was blown away.
Agreed, most ecchi fanservice makes me uncomfortable since it mostly happens to female characters…and as a woman it…is very frustrating, cringey and uncomfortable for me. But this anime did it right, I actually enjoyed the fanservice, and Marin as a character. Marin’s personality and the fanservice centred on her actually made the anime enjoyable to watch! It was also all so beautifully animated I couldn’t tear my eyes away
I think it's just the painful fanservice scenes. Like a certain bathroom scene that makes me want to scrub out my eyes. Also how Marin is really into anime/eechi but at the same time is completely innocent of sex and sex appeal. Feel like the anime want both a girl who is into the same perverted stuff they are but also pure and innocent at the same time.
I mean, someone can be into perverted stuff, and still be flustered and embarrassed when you end up doing it for, probably, the first time. Especially if you end up doing it with someone that you have a huge crush on, who you might think doesn't quite like it as much.

Dress-Up Darling is my favorite anime the Winter Season. I don't typically like ecchi, but Dress-Up Darling is so charming I can't stay away. One of the things I really like about it is that most of the fanservice makes sense narratively. It's not there just because.

Didnt give it a watch, then i did watch it. Similar to my nisekoi experience, i fell in love with marin.
Anime being Realistic makes you relate so much to everything thats happening while being imapctful and heartfelt watching it.
