  • In Close to Home, Michelle Zauner, an author and the singer of Japanese Breakfast, explores the results of migration on cuisine, and the personal experiences and community that are tied into the merging of food cultures. As cooks try to replicate familiar dishes in foreign homes, they rely on what’s around them. But by tying in techniques, ingredients, and sensory memories from their places of origin, they create new, hybrid cuisines. In this episode, Michelle meets with Kudret Yakup, founder and operator of Yana Kebab Express, to talk about Uyghur cuisine, the food of a Turkic ethnic group who live in East and Central Asia.

Uyghur (turkic) food has so much influence on north indian mughlai cuisine that when I was in China, I'd go with my Pakistani and Central Asian friends to Uyghur restaurants.. they would go there for halal/no pork food, and I would for remembering what food at home tasted like 😊

@@medezez3562 Even in the video they compared Indian and Uyghur naans... we have all of these dishes in North India (Old Delhi Mughlai cuisine)and South-east India (Hyderabadi cuisine). Suggest you look these cuisines up on youtube, you'll see they are the same 😊 Of course, i didn't say Uyghur food came from Indian food. I meant Uyghur (Turkic) food is also a part of Indian cuisine because of our history with Turko-Mongols.

@Özlem Sadıkoğlu you are clearly repeating chinese propaganda. The population of Uyghur people dramatically and deliberately diluted by Chinese in the last 50 years. They are being prosecuted and assimilated in the land they call home, where their ancestors called home. You don't have to be Turkic to have empathy with their plight. It is not about rivalry between countries it is about basic human rights. If you don't believe all the news about the horrors they are facing I suggest you look at basic numbers of how the demographics changed in the area after Chinese occupation. That area is not part of China historically, they occupy it just like they occupy Tibet and Inner Mongolia. Do you realize first Turkic dictionary was written there a thousand years prior? You are either ignorant of the history or knowingly spreading misinformation. I won't answer you any further. You are either brainwashed or have an agle -other than honest conversation- that I don't understand.

My heartfelt support and wishes go out to all Uyghur people. You guys are clearly distinct in your culture, customs and foods. With ZERO in common with Han Chinese. Different faith, different language, different script, different facial features. What more can you ask for, than the right for self determination, to break free from the malignant chain of control by the CCP who illegally occupy or claim nearly half of "modern China" (Tibet, East Turkestan, Taiwan, Manchuria, Inner Mongolia) just keep fighting for your rights, to be respected as humans and appreciated for your unique and beautiful culture. Sincere regards from Australia. Let's all join to pursue a better world. One without the evil twisted CCP whose rush for power is paramount above all else including rights of its citizens and ethnic minorities. #downwithCCP
