- Defunct Games reviews Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers, available now on PC and coming later this year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch.
If you grew up loving cheesy alien invasion films from the 1950s, then let me introduce you to Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers. This side-scrolling shoot ‘em up plays out like a love letter to Plan Nine from Outer Space, complete with full-motion video cinemas and a story that isn’t afraid to dive head-first into the absurd. Yet, even with the overacting and cheap effects, this classic shooter manages to be memorable in all of the best ways. While some hardcore shoot ‘em up experts may turn their noses up at the slightly easier difficulty and style over substance, there’s no doubt that Squad 51 is one of the most unique shooters you’ll play this year. This is a stylish and accessible shooter that should appeal to pretty much anybody who likes shooting down UFOs on strings.

I saw this game on the steam storefront and was immediately intrigued. The visual design certainly grabs your attention. I'm glad it actually plays well and is worth the investment. Based on your review, I will definitely pick this game up. Thanks for the awesome content every week. Love this channel!
Thanks for this review. Love your reviews and especially your delivery. Always include great content and just a joy to listen to. Not to mention the cherry on top - your game selections: you always chose these smaller little indie gems that pique my interest, mostly games I come across and then search UA-cam for reviews and you live often already done the game in question.
So thanks and keep up the good work.
One thing I didn’t catch … game length. I’m wondering how long this is. Also, I thought it was priced at $19.99 new. But PS store has it on sale now for $14.99, down from nearly $30. So I’m wondering if the version on sale now is some delux, updated version given its original price
you always seem to pick the gems I’m interested in learning more.
First and foremost, thank you so much for the kind words. It means a lot. As somebody who has been a freelance critic for more than two decades at this point, I find it to be the most fulfilling when I can discover the hidden gems and dig up treasure that nobody else is talking about. I hope I can continue to do that well into the future.
When it comes to the length of Squad 51, it's around 90 - 120 minutes. A couple of hours all the way through. In that sense, it's actually quite a bit longer than most shooters. It's worth it for the story and set pieces.
Don't buy it. It crashes at the same point on level 2. They need to test the game, and update it on PS4.
I'm in complete awe. This looks INCREDIBLE!
Seeing the thumbnail, kinda wondered what this was, I never really got into side scrolling shooters, but this looks interesting. As for the question, and this shows what little experience I have in them, but closest I could think of is Zaxxon, so I'll make that my answer.
It probably doesn't answer your question correctly, since it's vertically scrolling, but I'm a big fan of ZeroRanger.
Man that looks freaky. I rewound the video to the beginning to look at the graphics more.
Also noticed that the shots from the plane tilt when you change direction up or down. That's a cool effect I don't think I've seen before in a dedicated shooter.
QOTD, Want to say Pulstar on then neogeo.
Skykid on NES had the diagonal shot when you were moving up and down. That's the first example that comes to mind. I think there may be some choplifter alikes that have the same mechanic too. But yeah, not common at all.
Thanks for this review. Your insights led me to wishlists, and I just picked it up on switch. It plays well, and I was giggling at the live action cut scenes. Thanks again
I appreciate the kind words. This game is great, and I love that more people will be able to experience it on the Switch.
QotD: I'll tweak it slightly. Stylistically, I'll give it to the oft forgotten Boogie Wings, that's just amazing!
Love the "generic greenscreen explosion" effects
Nice! Love shooters and the style, Will definitely buy!
... sooo glad it is good. I have been waiting a long time for this one :) reminds me of deadly tower of monsters . Which I really dug...
Sine Mora turned out quite good, in spite of its crazy confusing story ..
I know. Tower of Monsters was a good game and it does remind you of this. I like type of games and movies. Need more like it
Man I’ve got to play Deadly Tower of Monsters. I wound up buying it some time back but have yet to play
I was worried about Squad 51 but glad to see how it came out. Wishlisted.
U.N. Squadron.
It only take about 3 hours to finish though.
You say "only," but that's six times longer than most shoot 'em ups. Also, it has a fun story to experience, unlike most shooters.
@@DefunctGames Most other shooter are extremely challenging though....This isn't
It comes down to what you're looking for in a shooter. This does have a harder mode, but the fun is the story and presentation. If you're looking for extreme challenge, then this may not be the shooter for you. I would say that three hours is pretty damn good for this type of game.
@@DefunctGames I own the game....And i am saying because it's not designed to be challenging there is not enough content.
Does this game have a "Save Game" feature or even a way to Pause it during interruptions? Or is it like on old cart game where you say "I can't come to dinner, Mom. I'm in the middle of the game." ? 😀
1:10 - Um, Actually, that theme is from Stage 1 of Thunderforce II not III. hehe
You're absolutely right. My finger must have slipped.
@@DefunctGames You are forgiven for having a fine sense of taste.
The Deadly Tower of Monsters have similar premise ,you are playing main protagonist in old sci-fi movie set,it was pretty good, and have like "post commentary" through game,it was pretty funny.
Qotd;Since I'm the least familiar with shoot 'em ups, I've only played few for now. So I'll say Sine Mora Ex is my favourite side scrolling shooter.
I had a hard time getting into Sone Mora, I think it was the seemingly background elements that were actually obstacles that kept killing me in the first few stages. Any tips to help me "get it"?
@@CarlMakesVideos I've totally forget that I have a lot issues with that game, since that was around 5 years ago. You reminded me now, It was pretty challenging for me even on normal difficulty(that was lowest I think). Yeah you're right during some fights it wasn't clear if enemy/boss is on screen or in background, and destroying parts of enemy was challenging. Really wish I could help, heck I don't know if today I would continue playing, and than I was trying finish games without guide even if I was stuck for hours or even day,lol Sorry mate.
I just discovered this game on Steam and tried it. Fun as hell! Plays great to me but the intro cut scene has a voice stutter. Every so often, the narrator repeats himself. I checked file integrity and it was ok so I tried reinstalling it and it still does it. Anyone else notice this? Is it part of the game? Suggestions?
I've read that to get rid of the stutter you need to choose low resolution, which apparently doesn't spoil the view, but does eliminate the stutter. I don't have this game yet; so let us know if that works for you.
@@edgeofeden7583 Yeah, I eventually experimented enough and discovered that. It was the quality setting. I kept the 1920x1080 but turned quality to low. It made no difference in how the game looks or plays but stopped the odd stutter. Just a harmless little glitch. Game plays fine. Thanks!
This game crashes on PS4 error 34878. It won't load checkpoint on level 2, and crash everytime after dieing on level 2. Can't even play but one level. Its the game. So no one should buy it till they update it.
