  • Step-by-step instructions on how to install Bahama shutters. We walk you through the entire process to mount tropical wood Bermuda shutters on your beach house.

Bahama shutters are built to hang from the top of a window, like an awning, to provide shade to the window. The open louvers allow for filtered light to enter the interior of the home, while protecting the window from the elements.
To install, you will need the Bahama shutter, top mounting hinge, shutter stays, installation screws and several basic tools.
There are actually two hinges designed for installing Bahama shutters. The hinge shown in this video is the most widely used for to mount the shutter in front of the window. It is simple in design and protects the shutter and the window from the top. The hinge is sold in set lengths, so it will need to be trimmed during the installation. Wider shutters may require more than one hinge. In the video we cut the top hinge slightly long and the bottom hinge slightly shorter. This is so the top channel can be pinched so the shutter can't slide out (which likely won't happen). It is common to trim both sections the same width of the Bermuda shutter.
The second available Bahama shutter hinge is used to nest the shutter inside of the window opening.
The shutter stays are designed to hold the Bahama shutter in an open position. The pins can be released to lock the shutter in a closed position if necessary. Many homeowners fabricate DIY shutter arms. The component just needs to prop the shutter out from the bottom in the proper location.
The store purchased shutter stays come with mounting screws. The top hinge does not. For this installation, we purchased 1.5" screws to secure the top hinge section to the window and 1" screws to attach the hinge to the top of the shutter. Make sure the screws will not corrode (we used stainless steel) and the head is large enough to lock the hinge against the shutter.

How well do these hold up during a hurricane? Also I have a two story house and it is elevated because it is on a shore line. I suppose they can be operated from inside the house, through the open window.

Wood Bahama shutters are primarily designed for light control and will naturally deter some debris but are not rated for hurricane protection. Yes. you should be able to open and close the shutters through an open window.

Our shutters are not built for security purposes. The shutters can be a deterrent and impede sight lines through the window.

This installation took us about 45 minutes to an hour. Obviously, installation time varies from window to window and time decreases with experience.

When installed with a top hinge, Bahama shutters can be closed to protect the window in inclement weather.
