    You may have already solved the issue, but it sounds like your tablesaw fence and blade are not parallel.

      They were not. Back in the day when I removed and repaired the mount prior to this video, I didn’t know it would need to be squared up again. It’s since been repaired and working a lot better. Thanks though!

    I like your design approach! That notched board to support the louvers, is exactly the solution I needed! Thank you!!

    Hey nice job on these shutter, John. For the dowel holes, I've used on of those Kreg brand jigs that clams on to the side of the board and allows for a very straight hole to be drilled every time, and in different sizes too. Thanks again for some good insights.

      Thank you, glad you got something out of it. Yeah the dowel jig I put together left a little to be desired, I might have to look into picking up a new one.

    great work . wooden shutters do a much better job at keeping the sun heat from raising inside temperature if you install them on the outside of the window as opposed to the inside

    I'm thinking try reinstall the rifing knife on the saw and the binding will stop and your saw will handle the 2x4s easier...easier on the breakers too.

    • @JohntheSchreiner
      @JohntheSchreiner  4 роки тому

      I think it might have been the setup and technique at the time. I haven’t stalled out the saw like that in around 2 years now. Saw’s also secondhand and didn’t come with a riving knife, otherwise it would be on.

    • @JohntheSchreiner
      @JohntheSchreiner  Рік тому

      Thanks!
      No I didn’t. At the time I don’t think I knew that was a thing, haha.
      If I were to do it again though, depending on the circumstances I might, though if it was for the same personal shop project probably not.

    I have to wonder how many years of experience went into just winging it, in order to make these on the fly. No jigs, premade stuff etc. Crazy, and thats a def. nope on my part.

      Actually since I’ve rearranged my shop, I’ve nixed the open/close and just screwed them to the wall over the windows. Seems to cancel out the warp factor, haha

    If you purchase a higher horsepower motor and wire it to run on 220 VAC it will run cooler. Harbor Freight offers several electric motors at a decent price.

      Thanks for the feedback. That was fairly early in my making days so I was still figuring stuff out. I actually haven’t had my saw stall out, or trip the breaker for anything other than my thickness planer in quite some time.

  • @stanley626

    Warped 2 reasons. How square is your table saw blade to the top and secondly there is no way you will ever get dowels square the way you did them. Why did you surface mount the hinges? They look awful and very amateurish

    • @JohntheSchreiner
      @JohntheSchreiner  4 роки тому +1

      Saw's fine, The warp was introduced once I glued it up with the dowels so I know that that was the issue there, first time I tried through dowel joinery. As for the hinges, it would have been a different story if it was a client piece or something in the house, but at the end of the day, whatever, it's a shop project.

    • @stanley626
      @stanley626 4 роки тому

      John the Schreiner fair enough but it’s no harder to fix the hinges to the side of the stiles
      If they are through dowels you are better off to glue up without the dowels and then drill and add them later.
      Also much easier to cut angle slots in the stiles before glue up on the table saw using the slide on angle and then glue the slats in after. No need to muck about with the triangle cuts. A dado stack would make curing the slots a lot quicker if your saw can take them.

    • @JohntheSchreiner
      @JohntheSchreiner  4 роки тому

      True.
      Yes, I've done it that way since then and have had better success, or use screws as a temporary support and replace them with dowels after the fact. That's worked well for me in the past as well.
      That would work too. I thought about doing that but decided against it because I don't have a miter gauge for the table saw. Don't have a dado stack either, I have a wobble dado blade, but its a bit too wide for my arbor to accept.
