  • Learn how to install metal storm shutter panels with this helpful how-to video from Lowe's. Aluminum hurricane shutters are a great choice due to their strong, lightweight design that are quick and easy to install. Once you install the metal storm shutter track, you can easily remove and re-install your storm shutters whenever needed.
    Start off by measuring each window opening dimensions. When you have all of the measurements, take them to your local Lowe's and ask an associate whether stock panels will work or if you need to order custom storm panels. It is also important to get the correct type of mounting hardware depending on if you have a wood, brick or block exterior.
    You can use build-out tracks or mount the panels horizontally. On the build-out track, mark centered holes 3" from each end and every 6" in between .Then drill the holes and mark the center of each piece. Mark a 6" vertical marks center on your house above and below the window sill. Secure the header with a concrete screw, level and add the other screws. A watertight seal can be achieved with a line of caulk. Attach the bottom track, and then you can start inserting the metal panels.

    We've had storm shutters since 'The Big 4' in '04 and tomorrow, I have to put them up for the first time in over a decade. Thanks for the easy reminder of how it all comes together. Pray for us in Brevard County.

    Thank you. We're recently bought a home with metal storm shutter panels, but the prior owner did not leave any instructions. This really helped me with hanging some of the shutter panels last night.

    Now that Irma has passed through Tampa and I have TIME to prepare, I'm going to get to work on this! Doesn't look hard, but I am disabled so I can't do much work at a time. Hoping I can hold out enough to do one window at a time. Thanks for the vid!

    Thanks Lowe's! When researching info. that 🌱LWGardens365🌴 can utilize in order to improve upon the services offered to the historic town of Lake Worth Beach here in S. Florida, I find that your videos oftentimes are the first to introduce new and innovative products that allow us to rethink how we go about Beautifying, Maintaining, and Protecting our "Hidden Jewells" In this case, the polycarbonate material for a translucent hurricane shutter is a potentially great idea, assuming neither cost nor durability are too heavily affected. I'm certainly interested and will be stopping by your Boynton Beach location today in order to see just how much more costly it is compared to the basic corrugated ones so I can potentially share this with my existing and new clients. To any homeowner's contemplating this, I would initially suggest at the very least doing one or two windows in each main area in order to minimize the Shut-In Blues that is an all too familiar situation when the main power grid has been down for a week and a half! Even for those who have ample power generation capabilities, there's no substitute for natural sunlight.
    And, if there is one guarantee after a hurricane, it's that beautiful blue skies are to follow!

    • @rckoegel
      @rckoegel 7 років тому +1

      it would make sense if they were steel, because of rust... aluminum should be alright on the floor? But I'd put some bolts on the wall in the garage and hang em up, just cause. Could even store them in an attic or crawlspace; the climate would be about the same as a garage. If crawlspace though, I'd def hang them from floor joists, and not leave them in the moist dirt.

    Why is it recommended to store panels on wooden blocks? What does this prevent?

    • @lowes
      @lowes  6 років тому +4

      It prevents the shutters from rusting out during long periods of storage. By placing the panels on wood blocks, moisture from the floor is unable to contact the shutters, and airflow is increased so no moisture gets trapped between/behind them.

    Is there any way to, make this system, completely removable? I am referring to the tracks. Any ideas on using bolts that screw into threaded inserts for the tracks. The inserts would be permanent, and in a storm situation, you would bolt on the tracks, then install the panels. Just wondering what hardware, and the process.

    • @Fedechat

      Yes, use Machine screw anchors and sidewalk screws

      There are smaller aluminum rails that are better and barely noticeable. They are similar to the bottom rail in the video where 1/4" nuts slide in. I'm unable to find them at the moment. My guess is people hated cutting and drilling the holes.
