It's as if he wrote the song specifically for the voice of Johnny Cash...but the authenticity or voice of Kristofferson makes the song even more special...
I was at the Cash concert in Moncton,aug.16,1968 a couple weeks after Luther died. Still have the newspaper clipping, and His autograph,June's,Mother Maybell,Carl Perkins .Took a lot of guts to put that show on so soon after Luther died. Takes a lot of guts for Kristofferson to stand and sing about His friend. Fame and fortune i guess comes with hard work and a gifted mind and heart . What awesome entertainment we have witnessed because of sacrifices of two Gentlemen.
Some of the greatest poetry ever written came from Kris Kristofferson's heart and soul. Read this one sometime without the music.....unparalleled writing.
I was fortunate enough to see Kris live in Green Bay recently at the Meyer Theater. He's 80 years of age and it was a life changing experience for me, who really didn't know much about this legend. He was awesome! Big fan now!
Kris wrote it...gave it to John...Nashville wanted them to take out the stoned part...Johhny flipped em off and done it like Kris wrote it...now THA'T'S Friendship! I love and miss em both!
Miss them both? I don’t know what both you’re in reference to, but Kris Kristofferson is still living. He recently retired in January 2021. He lives in Hawaii doing well.
What a songwriter is Kris, such a deep heart felt song, it sure zeroes in on the way of life in the 50's. I prefer Johnny's version, but Ray Stevens put out a good one also his was the first version I heard.
@tomagotch08 But it's ok. I think Kris really likes what he is doing these days. I just saw him in Worcester Ma this spring. He was great. Relaxed, played all my favorite songs of his that I have stolen and cover. LOL. God Bless you Kris!! PWarburton
I WOULD LIKE THE LIRICS SO I CAN SING ALONG TO THIS SONG IN MY OLD DOTAGE, WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF IT WAS POSSIBLE LOLXX. pleese reed on, I am a COWBOY WHO LIKES THE FREE LIFE. GOD BLESS YOU. XX
Please get the name of the song right, this is one of the greatest songs in country music, and the name of it is "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and for those who do not know Johnny Cash put his career on the line to sing this just as Kris had written it.
You are correct but Kris himself introduces the song as "this first song for Jonny Cash" hence the video refers to this particular version. There are several on UA-cam using the correct title. Personally I think this is a brilliant version.
Age does it to all of us, but it is more apparent in singers than almost anyone. Unfortunately, Kris's voice has been overtaken by age. Thankfully, we have past recordings of all his songs to hear how unique he was.
@jkiene amen. Bobby McGee was for Janis, we all knew it, he never sang it til she found freedom. Seems Kris kept it HER song. He finally sang it himself, the proof was in the pudding... a tribute to Janis, nada song he had any rights to. (whadda gift.) tha same unwitting gift Sunday Morning was to Johnhy. He's 75. will that littly boy grin'n them sweet shy eyes ever elude us? Not'n my world. then agin, disco was all about me lookin hot'n spandex forever. ( so ya nevah know.)
It's as if he wrote the song specifically for the voice of Johnny Cash...but the authenticity or voice of Kristofferson makes the song even more special...
One of the best songs ever written- sung by one of the greatest singers (and poets) ever born.
Definitely 👍

Completely agree 👍
A Rhodes Scholar with an advanced degree in English Lit. It shows. Nobody stitched the words together like Kris.
Yes I totally agree with tomagotch08, It made me want them back, Johnny Cash is a sad sad loss, an absolute Legend of the first degree.
"the Sunday smell of someone frying chicken"! I remember that smell. My mom always fried chicken after church on Suncays. Love Kris!!!!
I'd rather listen to this aged, cracked, wonderful voice than the finest "good" singer. Good singers are a dime a dozen. Heartfelt poets are rare.
IMHO Kristofferson was the best poet of the 20th c.
SO TRUE
HELL YEA GREAT SONG

@3Spikes2glry Wow man. I tear up knowing that I never met Johnny Cash or Waylon Jennings. I also teared up at your comment here.
Kris is still alive

@3Spikes2glry That is a ridiculously cool story. Almost too good to be true. I really hope it is though!
It's definitely true Kriss lived it
It sounds exactly like Johnny,,,,
