If you press, "Z", you target your partner, when they are using a support borg, it will come to do what it does (heal/quicken/etc.).
Yeah, I read that in the manual, funny enough it did not work on my controller, I didn't feel like I lost much in not being able to do that.
I love this game.
I remember having a force of only alternating basic blue/orange planes due to how broken good they were, which also meant I usually never went past my first or second unit.
I’d love a sequel with the same basic gameplay but with everything within that gameplay being improved. Fixing the camera, the controls, etc, plus an actual story. I always loved the game, and I hate seeing it rot as a cult classic that will likely never get a new installment.
This game basically span off into the gundam vs series (latest being Gundam Extreme Versus Maxi Boost On (started off as Capcom made games but seems to be made by Bamco now). Unfortunately Capcom never made another original game in this style.
On the Gunman borgs: Despite their appearent focus on range attacks: They are one of the best combo units in the game.
One of the few that can work around the knockback mechanic. Shoot -> Shoot -> Dash -> Punch -> Doubleshot
They have a rather impressive damage output. Even the weaker ones. The Powered Gunman makes this focus on Combos rediculously clear, as his "Gimmik" move is a buckshot that is at near meele range with a rediculous damage output, but a large amounts of bullets, meaning you should use it to finish a combo.
On Ninjas: They are meant to counter one thing and one thing only: Slow moving ships.
You should have tried one on the satelite fight. It turns it into a cakewalk.
Overall: Combos are acchieved through positioning and a finisher with the "Gimmik" button. The Knockback being triggered on multiple weak attacks is meant to act as a punishment for those who spam a single button!
Take the Ninja with the large shuriken on its back: 4-5 Shurikens knock someone away. 2 Meeles aswell.
But: 3 Shurikens -> Dash -> 1 Punch -> "Gimmik" move
Suddenly you deal nearly twice as much damage before the enemy flies away.
G Red? Same here. Spamming lazers makes a fight take longer.
But: Shoot -> Punch -> Jump -> Air Attack -> "Gimmik" move produces a damage output that is rediculous.
Knights are not meant to chase enemies. Their shield can block lazers and bullets. They are meant to force ranged attackers into meele.
Divers counter fast enemies like ninjas. Especially the Tar Diver is rediculously good against them.
There is a surprising depth in the combat. It actively punishes lazy one button spamming.
But is it good? No. Just not as bad as it looks at first.

You know, I had rented this game at a Blockbuster SEVERAL years ago and vaguely remembered it. It's cool to look back at this game years later.

Hey snake dunno if you will read this but as someone who also plays this game you missed some things though i cant blame you because i stumbled into them by accident and repeated observation. (or you did not mention them) Knight borgs or borgs with shields have a parry mechanic if you dash forward into an attack you might notice they raise their shield during this time they block attacks though the hitbox is a little wonky at times. This is why insect Knight is top tier homing bombs a great shield and a good sword when deploying its bombs also activates the parry if i recall.
"Mr Reverse Bolt" is actually a song name those "plant mages" are supposed to be pop idols those sunflower looking things are actually giant speakers.
The point of the crystals is trading but it's also bullshit. but more then one play through of the game increases your drop rate for rarer borgs. I managed to get the UFO the Timestop Samurai on my first play through once you can also get alternate color G Reds.
I note that your sticking to gun play and while i can't fault you learning to juggle melee and ranged attacks optimizes your damage. this is evidenced by G Red/Neo whos attacks form a natural chain. (melee string into laser)
The cowboys are weak yes but not worthless the idea is to get close and blast using the bullet spray as a combo finisher their bullets are so large and it's a stunlock BUT the real use is as Tank Busters due to how the game works all those bullets have their own hitboxes and damage dash into a dragon or anything tama has.
there are alot of unique borgs which are very rare there are also ones unique to co op in which they actually combine not sure how the work since i never had a chance to try them.

God damn I love this game. Supper bummed that there was never a second one! The game play for this game was great.
The reason the game is frustrating is because it was a necessary step to evolve the formula after the Gundam Versus series started hitting a roadblock in game design and Atsushi Tomita had to innovate in some way. A lot of the ideas of Gotcha Force eventually carried over to latter entries in the Gundam Vs series and to this day are worked upon until they a re perfected. If anything, beyond a historical stepping stone in game design, Gatcha Force doesn't serve much, least the devs(not currently employed by Capcom) decide they want to revisit the franchise and suitably update it.
RiderWithTheScarf@ it served hella a lot more than virtual on and gundam vs,it even has machines fuse in live combat unlike any other game giving a viewtiful joe experience.and your making it sound like a normal psychic force stile game,theres a reason why its over priced on ebay.

Apart from the live combat fusing robots, it didn't do much else like I said. The fusing robots thing was pretty novel outside of RPGs but it took them years before anything like that could happen again, with Danball Senki for a reason.

And bullshit on nobody knowing about Gotcha Force. People knew of Custom Robo, knew of Medabots and full well knew about the newer Gundam games by Capcom. That goes for both the west and Japan. While for Japan it might have been a competitor to those bigger brands, in the west it may have mostly flown under the radar but those who understood what it was were not willing to take chances simply because the games the team had produced up to that point were plain horrible. The early Gundam Vs game were unplayable, horrible messes with almost no fun factor. Gotcha Force was their turning point. Go and look at Gundam Seed Vs for the PS2 and the PSP and then look at Gundam Vs on the PSP to see how much Gotcha Force influenced these games and that's considered the start of a golden age for the team. Hell, Gundam Vs on the arcades single handedly saved this dying genre and to this day Japan still holds "dogfight" arcade tournaments that are just below Tekken 7 and Guilty Gear in popularity at the local arcades.
And I'd like you to point me over to where I say I love Medabots more than Gotcha Force. I'd love to see that. You constantly shift goalposts and call upon "my feelings" when I gave cold facts. Where do I say I prefer GF over Medabots or Danball Senki? Where do I state MY preferences concerning which games I like? Does my liking Medabots Infinity have anything to do with facts now that you brought it up just so you can make look untrustowrthy?
And like it or not, GF was released after those games(Gundam Vs PS2, the first Medabots games, the Custom Robo etc) because Capcom's schtick is being unoriginal as fuck with the tradeoff of actually having mechanically excellent games in the long run. One look at the Mega Man series is enough to make you realise it's beyond unoriginal but the quality it has and its gameplay is perfect beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Because it was influenced by them and managed to advance a stagnated Gundam Versus formula to a next stage. That's what's amazing and endearing by Capcom, that's why its fans love their games. Me included.
Watching the gameplay a lot of this really does mirror the flow and some mechanics of the Gundam Versus games.
I hope you never stop covering old GC games. Custom Robo was the big one for me when I was a kid.

You should also know that the first ending isn't the end. If you want to collect all of the borgs you have to play it like 20 times.
Usagi and Nekobe were my favorite partners. Their surprising aggression meant they could actually deal damage and sort-of hold their own in a scrap, plus they tended to use some of the more useful Borgs by my standards. Nana was fine until she got the mages, but I never needed healing assistance so I didn't think she contributed much even early game.
Everyone else was... there. Probably should have tried Sho more and/ or replayed the game to try using Orochi, but oh well.
Funnily enough, before I got Tama (and Met! And Sho!), I liked to use Tsutomu the most! Why? Orange Fighter. Tank. Also, the Orange Fighter and the Blue Attacker are more reliable than you give them credit for. Don't use the Vulcan's, just use the Charge B Cannons. Use a bomb or Missile Occasionally, and SPAM Charge B once you hit Super Mode!
My go to partners were typically Kakeru, Usagi, Sho and Orochi. Kakeru and Usagi for their large amount of borgs and Sho and Orochi because they typically had the strong borgs

This looks a lot like Custom Robo just more kid friendly. Interested that I never heard about it when I was younger, but after watching I'm not sure I would enjoy playing

the ice dragon is pretty decent if you have mana as a partner but that the only time it is usefull as it can stun lock enemies whit the ice blast, also i just found out the color cube next to a borg means it is a shiny ???? borg i have a battle girls whit cyan hair instead of pink, a double ninja whit like a green vest on, and here I was wonderign what those r cubes meant, pretty cool you can get shinies in this game

I loved this game. The first game I stayed up all night playing when I was little. I'd always ask the rental store if they'd sell a copy to me but they only had one. Sadly, I never beat it, the first time I rented I got stuck on one of the 1v5 fights, the other time on the final boss. I'd really like to see a new GF game on the Switch
For a sequel, I think you have to keep the VA, the small cast of characters upgrading their borgs, and random gets. It goes without saying the combat should be slightly improved but still simplistic, as long as the moves feel satisfying (which the gimmick moves always did when I was younger) you can get away with only a couple options. And then of course features like online play, trading, and I think an equip system of items that give an appearance and move change would be cool.
There was a game for 3DS that was somewhat similar to this.
This reminds me off an old bakugon game that was pretty fun.

You'd most likely really love the Custom Robo games.
Ninjas are great, I'd say they are glass cannons.
They don't have a dash limit, which means you can basically stay in the air much longer than flying borgs and their plunging attack is ridiculously strong.
You can actually do a lot of damage with a normal Ninja borg by using the melee attacks. I've grown to like them as cheap placeholder for leftover GF Energy. It's a really fair review, I guess I only really love this game for nostalgia and the over-the-top colors and sound effects.

This is one one the coolest looking games I've ever seen
So Gundam Breakers, but on Gamecube. Wonder if any of its DNA ended up there, about a ten year gap but the reprint mentioned was only a year out from Breaker 1...
I finished Gotcha Force and it rewards you with extra versions of the main character toy like Blue, translucent, and shadow for each time you beat the game and you have random chances to find other characters like that its fun I've gotten almost every character and i TRADED THE DAMN THING INTO GAME STOP FOR CHUMP CHANGE
This does feel like Armored Core for Kidz, still neat though.
In spite of your coming away with a negative impression of a game I cherish, you bring up too many good points. Which is even more of a reason that I'll keep pining for a sequel where the game's strengths might shine brighter.
P.S. You might find this amusing: you have to play through Story Mode nearly 10 times to unlock special alternate versions of G Red (the only ones not obtainable via random drops)
Thanks for your understanding, I don't talk negatively about a game unless I can find solid things I can point to and demonstrate and while I didn't come away liking this I'm still glad I beat it, and I can see why other people would like it.
I did after clearing the game read up on more unlocks, and yeah, the way it doles out unlocks over mutliple playthroughs is fascinatingly slow.
Kotaro is my favorite because of his final line in the final battle. "It doesnt matter who it is, I wont be beaten." Plus I liked Gunner Borgs. And Ninja Borgs.
Fuck I had so many unique borgs. Rip my memory card.

Shining samurai gets a lighting charge attack that kills everything and one tank that shoot spikes is best for final boss. The game is fun but in slow bursts and i think a sequel would make a great game but that will never happen

Hahaha, thanks for this. I played through this 8-9 times in co-op when I was younger, trying to collect the different G Red colors and all the other bots. This game always held some cult status for me, but the flaws you mention are so true, just remained unnoticed for my 14 year old soul back in the day. Still, Very sad this didn't get picked up more and got a sequel, because the insane array of different mechanics for the bots is impressive, and the collecting aspect was just nice.

Ehhhh, I wouldn't say so but tastes differ
The controls and lock-on are similar to the first Virtual-on, the controls in virtual on are more complicated and skill based.
How good the multiplayer is depends on who you're playing with, I can't see it getting boring that fast if you have 3 other players, the simplicity makes it very accessible just keep in mind that you start with no borgs and you have to play the story mode to unlock them, you don't get the really cool ones until late into the game. Custom Robo has the same unlock problem.

if you wanna play a game like Gotcha force taht seems to fix your issues would be Gundam Extreme Versus full boost, that game has several different types of mechs and you can play with others online as well. I am friends with probably the best player in the UK
