I know, right? It reminds me of this one line from Kim Possible: "Everyone in the future is ripped!" Except with JoJos, it's the logical opposite. The farther _back_ in time you go, the more ripped people are. As the universe goes on - and Araki formalizes his art style - everyone gets slimmer. Part 1 is personally my favorite, but I am far for oblivious to its flaws. I agree the middle of it is just.. not very good. but I love the start and the end of it, and the anime version was my introduction to the series, so I'm a bit nostalgic for it. As I've mentioned in another comment, I think the Tarkus and Brufford fight actually has some symbolism to his inner struggle with this in an interesting way. It's this constant want to forgive and love Dio despite all he's done that makes me love Johnathan so much and makes the ending one of the best.
From what I recall, the Vento Aureo game is really good, if janky at times, and HFTF is only let down by limiting itself to Part 3 characters, which was probably because of the OVA adaptation that released around a similar time.
As someone who got into Part 1 because of the action, the early parts bore me (even if it's supposed to set up Jon and Dio's relationship) because there is barely any action aside from Jonathan receiving one-sided asswhooping and endless misery. Also mystic powers weren't a thing yet.

Manuel Mateo I agree with most of what you are saying. Part 1 was expertly (or perhaps accidentally) crafted to be a franchise bedrock. It set the moral standard of the series. Jonathan gets called boring by impatient tasteless plebs who want every character to be an overwritten mess of flaws (#notall), but Jonathan is the perfect Jojo. However Jonathan is only the perfect Jojo because Dio is the perfect Jojo villain. Their rivalry and how it develops is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure in its most distilled form, a battle betwern good and evil and through these battles each gets stronger until one overcomes the other. My favorite aspect of Phantom Blood is how Jonathan and Dio keep getting the upperhand over eachother. From Dio kissing Erina, to Jonathan beating Dio into submission (at least that's what Jonathan thinks), to Dio poisoning Jonathan's father, to Jonathan informing the police, to Dio becoming a vampire, ecetera. Both have this begruding respect for one another, but both want to overcome their fates and be free of eachother (but tragically can't). Jonathan's journey (episodes 4-7 of the anime, which Snakerer dismisses as boring) is great, because its a story of how Jonathan's physical strength and discipline are being tested. Dio becoming a vampire gave him a clear upperhand, but Jonathan had to earn the power to face Dio, which couldn't have been brushed over with a montage. We, the readers/audience had to experience it as well. Not to mention the excellent pacing. We get the core plot and key characters in the first three episodes, but to keep it fresh Araki introduced Hamon and Zeppeli, and Jonathan's relationship with them was expanded in the central chunk of PB. In the Joestar Manor fight, we get to see Jonathan be a hero in the face of an overwhelming enemy. Learning Dio is still alive and the fact that Jonathan barely survived the encounter makes for a triumphant feeling in us when Jonathan not only starts to learn Hamon, but starts going up against horrors comprable to vampire Dio. I could go on, I especially love the Bruford fight and talk about that in length, or how awesome it was when Jonathan did the most brilliant villain takedown in the franchise's history (setting his fist on fire to fight Dio's flash freeze? So simple it's genius). I'll just close my thoughts by saying that no matter what part I'm reading, I always think back to Jonathan and Dio, and how their rivalry sent a shockwave down generations, and even universes. It's a short story, but it nails a hero's journey with fun shonen battles and memorable characters in a nice tight package. What's not to love?
It's weird that they picked Part 1 for this. A part with very little action for the first half, and not too many memorable fight scenes past the the initial setup of situations. Part 2 would've been a much better fit if they wanted to keep it to pre-Stand fisticuffs. Part 3 has the easiest format to turn into a brawler since that's just episodic fights that are overall meaningless to anything and anyone.
There's a motive they picked Part 1, to create hype for the Phantom Blood movie that was released some months later (game was released in October 2006 and the movie February 2007 to coincide with the series 20th anniversary) the game and movie even share voice actors. This movie being infamous for being shelved after its short theatrical premiere for unknown motives and to this day, the only footage that exists of it on the internet (other than the short trailer) is some work prints that a student has given as a part of a university project.
If you bothered to fucking listen, you'd realize what was said was that if someone was going to drop it, they could skip ahead to part two, not that people should skip the first part.
@Hope Bagel a bit late but I'd say your kind of correct. To get the full context of the start of part 2, episodes 1 to 3 and the episodes 8 and 9 are important. Technically William Zeppelis arc is not needed to know as Ceasar explains it anyways . I'd say half of phantom blood is needed for set up for part 2, as all you need to really know in context is the mask, and speed wagon. Dio has very little relevance to part 2 other then a name drop and the context of his relationship with the joestars matters mostly just in part 3 where Dios actions in part 3 are the most relevant to later parts. The odd thing is I'd say part one is more important to part two, but because of how removed the events of part 2 are to the rest of the parts the events in part 1 tend to only matter in passing in part 3. Due to part 3 events being the catalyst for the other parts and the phasing out of hamon for stands part 1 and 2 take a back seat when it comes to ongoing narrative.
Am I hearing the blaster sound from Star Wars Also those interpretations were hilarious Wished you did it with the whole game Lets see what people come up with
I could undestand people beginning JoJo's with Part 2, but I feel a big part of the appeal of Part 3 comes from knowing Dio's Part 1 story. Because without it, he is the plainest villain to ever exist in a series. He is totally just a background character. Sure he is kinda scary with some of the scenes he appears in before his final battle. But he is absent for most of the part and its honestly all fine as long as you know him and his backstory and his motivations from Part 1. So... yeah. I guess at least watch a recap or something.
Araki i think explained that he wanted Jonathan to seem the most heroic out of all of his descendants do they seem like heroes as well even with their more negative characteristics like stealing, cockyness etc.
I fucking love how faithfully this game adapts the original part 1 artstyle, so everyone looks like a fridge with a gym membership and an overactive male hormonal gland. Especially since the games cover has John Boy and Dio in the later part male model style. Talk about misleading marketing.
There is no series that needs the RGG treatment more than JoJo. Imagine playing Joseph running around 1930s New York? Imagine all the wacky substories he could get involved in!
I’m pretty sure something went wrong with the interpretation document because I can’t access it but even without it this video was super hilarious and got you another subscriber. Thanks for the content
All I've ever seen of this game has been utterly bizarre, anyway interesting to see you're also into JoJo. In terms of Phantom Blood itself it is among the weakest of the part, not particularly through any fault of its own, it's just that the parts succeeding it are so good, though the current state of JoJolion is leaving me a little mixed. I wonder if there's going to be another JoJo game in the near future, hopefully an RPG or, in my weird fever dream of an idea, Lego JoJo.
The Insane Penguin Lego Jojo would be solid just watch dio explode into Lego. But yeah I agree part 1 is the weakest part as the other parts are just better as part 1 was kinda testing the water kinda how part 3 was for stands before going into this stand will punch you and somehow blow up the street.
the jojo games could use a unique fighting engine where it could allow the player to figure out how to defeat them similar to jojo itself. the main problem with that is that anyone whos read it will know how to beat them.
I'm about 45 hours in, and I'm loving it! Just getting some last ends taken care of before I start the final mission. Planning on Platinuming it, so I'll be playing well into NG+.
I got into JoJo's because of Mr Icarus's DIO Doom mod review and since then I have been seriously invested in the anime, even as someone who really does not watch anime. Having just finished part 4, this review and the part 5 announcement could not have come at a more opportune time, so hype.
I'm so glad I capitalized on the PS2 Phantom Blood economy when it was still new. I was obsessed with how garbage it looked and I'm so glad it's getting brought into the spotlight now. Still better than Eyes of Heaven.
Honestly, I wouldn't say to SKIP part one... But I WOULD say to watch it after watching part 2 at least, maybe even part three, and then go back to part 2 and then back to part 1, which sounds kinda weird but meh. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think Phantom Blood has it's merits but works FAR better as a tale than an actual story, like stuff Speedwagon would tell kids around a campfire, the legend of Jonathan's struggle with Dio. It's also kinda essential for context in later seasons, but on it's own it doesn't really stand up at all, it just works far better as a prequel to me.
I'm not accusing you of misintenpreting what I said but my words were essentially to "skip it if bored" because what comes later is an improvement. I've watched through part 1 more than once and I find an ironic entertainment in it. I will disagree that it's essential for later seasons contexts though, those later parts provide all needed context, there's very little that watching part 1 will grant you that you can't get from later parts themselves. Dio ignores a lot of his vampire powers, his relationship with Jonathan is a bit different but pretty self explanatory (and not really that useful, him disliking his lineage is pretty readily apparent and obvious why, his vampire powers are basically ignored outside of allowing him to use The World without great difficulty and why he's relegated to the indoors during daytime)
What do you mean, don't let his figure fool me? Are you telling me that brits in the 1800s weren't super manly and pure if they were gentlemen and had muscles that would make Hercules blush, even when they were 12? Prepostorous.
+Cherti Jonathan is the most upstanding JoJo Joseph is the most smart JoJo Jotaro is a more serious JoJo (thats why he won against Dio, Jonathan always was a noble fighter, not a serious one) Josuke is basically an even more comedic Joseph. Can't wait for Part 5 this October. HYPE!
I'm pretty sure that chieftain from the origin of the Stone Mask might be one of the Pillar Men from Part 2... Which, luckily, didn't get a game adaptation.
It's good to see a video on this game. I've been aware of it for a while, but didn't look into it much say for the 1 gameplay clip and yeah it doesn't look like I'm missing much. Which is kind of a shame, since I really like part 1 as a story, but sometimes being too faithful is a detriment to a game, especially one like this.
Despite all the criticisms - all valid, don't get me wrong - I rather like Phantom Blood, and still think Jonathan is my favorite JoJo. His simple character was endearing, in a way. He was more archetype than true character; a member of the nobility who is actually Noble, in contrast to many of his aristocratic peers, who cannot live up to the standards of the Gentleman. This is why I think Speedwagon pledged himself to Jonathan: the latter wasn't fake like every other aristocrat Speedwagon knew, and it made Speedwagon genuinely believe in ideals he thought killed long ago by his hard life. Or maybe I'm reading way too much into this, and just want to justify my own affection for the first JoJo part I was introduced to. I still think Jonathan is a character I find more interesting than other JoJos, with the obvious exception of Joseph. I always found the others kind of boring, and less interesting than the characters they surrounded themselves with.

Holy shit your taste is off the charts
It's weird that they picked Part 1 for this. A part with very little action for the first half, and not too many memorable fight scenes past the the initial setup of situations. Part 2 would've been a much better fit if they wanted to keep it to pre-Stand fisticuffs. Part 3 has the easiest format to turn into a brawler since that's just episodic fights that are overall meaningless to anything and anyone.
Aboveup Except Part 1’s fights are all fist fights, whereas every other part has strategic fights that don’t work as simple beat-em-ups
There's a motive they picked Part 1, to create hype for the Phantom Blood movie that was released some months later (game was released in October 2006 and the movie February 2007 to coincide with the series 20th anniversary) the game and movie even share voice actors.
This movie being infamous for being shelved after its short theatrical premiere for unknown motives and to this day, the only footage that exists of it on the internet (other than the short trailer) is some work prints that a student has given as a part of a university project.
it was made for the anniversary
I thought Araki hated it because of the changes. Speedwagon didn't even join Jonathan!
a speedwagon spinoff series is the only way to fix the debt to society that studio appp has
13:06
Well, I mean it would've been really weird if Jonathan had gotten a law degree, because then both him and Dio would've been bloodsuckers.
This game looks like a lego version of Yakuza, but DON'T BULLY JONATHAN
I liked this video until you said to skip part one... just no.. don't skip parts
If you bothered to fucking listen, you'd realize what was said was that if someone was going to drop it, they could skip ahead to part two, not that people should skip the first part.
@Insubstantial Croquembouche
So what you're saying is that if i don't like part 1, i should just drop the whole manga.
Gotcha, thanks.
@Insubstantial Croquembouche thanks for the info, Might start there then go back to the older stuff later.
Hokuto no Ken got a Yakuza-style spinoff game, so I hope we get a new JoJo game in the same style.
I'd love that
Am I hearing the blaster sound from Star Wars
Also those interpretations were hilarious
Wished you did it with the whole game
Lets see what people come up with
Hah, I think what I sent to my test subjects was already frying their brains, any more may do some permanent damage
How. Do. I. Find. You. Everywhere?
Honestly, I wouldn't mind if someone remastered this game and made it less clunky. This seems really good for a concept, yet it was executed poorly.

Unironically one of the funniest Part 1 related things I've seen
I think the ideal genre for a jojo game would be a puzzle game that pretends it's an action game
So, Punch Out with far, far, FAR more punching.
So basically, Jojo's pitter patter pop?
I could undestand people beginning JoJo's with Part 2, but I feel a big part of the appeal of Part 3 comes from knowing Dio's Part 1 story. Because without it, he is the plainest villain to ever exist in a series. He is totally just a background character. Sure he is kinda scary with some of the scenes he appears in before his final battle. But he is absent for most of the part and its honestly all fine as long as you know him and his backstory and his motivations from Part 1. So... yeah. I guess at least watch a recap or something.
Fun Fact this game’s Jonathan Joestar also voices the Boss of Passione in Golden Wind’s Anime
Becoming more buff isn't character development?
You dislike Jonathan. I dislike this this video.

Jesus these people hating on Jonathan especially you too mate Jonathan's a somewhat bland character but for goodness sake he doesn't deserve the hate
Araki i think explained that he wanted Jonathan to seem the most heroic out of all of his descendants do they seem like heroes as well even with their more negative characteristics like stealing, cockyness etc.
Never found him bland . I find Jonathan's sincerity and kindness touching.
Never. Skip. Parts.
Unless. You. Want. To.

Not gonna lie, I'd love to see modern game retellings of Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency that uses similar Hamon mechanics.
But yeah I agree part 1 is the weakest part as the other parts are just better as part 1 was kinda testing the water kinda how part 3 was for stands before going into this stand will punch you and somehow blow up the street.
check out the 7th stand user. its a fan made jojo rpg and is honestly better then any other jojo game we will ever get
Lego Dimensions pack?
the jojo games could use a unique fighting engine where it could allow the player to figure out how to defeat them similar to jojo itself. the main problem with that is that anyone whos read it will know how to beat them.
Part 1 is the best part, stop this bullshit about it being the weakest

Oh man. I worked at this developer back in 2000 and never realized they did this until recently. This is nuts.
Yakuza games are coming to PC! So excited!
Being a JoJo fan that's currently playing through Kiwami, this was a strange coincidence finding this comment here.
How are you finding it? I heard its Sega's best series right now.
I'm about 45 hours in, and I'm loving it! Just getting some last ends taken care of before I start the final mission. Planning on Platinuming it, so I'll be playing well into NG+.
Good to hear it is so long. I'm going to have to wait till August 1st but I'm sure it will be worth it.
Eh i'd still say PSO2 is the best thing sega is doing at the moment
Graphics are surprisingly good
Holy shit, I just realized the Hooligans boxart is in that pacman shitpost background at the start

I got into JoJo's because of Mr Icarus's DIO Doom mod review and since then I have been seriously invested in the anime, even as someone who really does not watch anime.
Having just finished part 4, this review and the part 5 announcement could not have come at a more opportune time, so hype.

Get excited, part 5 has some of the best fights in the series! Beach boy is one of my favorites!

That pose button is maximum JoJo. Every JoJo game should have it.
I'm so glad I capitalized on the PS2 Phantom Blood economy when it was still new. I was obsessed with how garbage it looked and I'm so glad it's getting brought into the spotlight now. Still better than Eyes of Heaven.
you said you don't like Jonathan your opinion is wrong
I'm with you until Jonathan
Can we just talk about Johnathon and his glorious running animation?
The ultimate jostar technique!
Jonathon is an amazing character I loved him in the anime and honestly golden wind seems better gamepley wise

those plots from the panel experiment sound like some rough JoJo abridged version
JoJo parts are like videogame cutscenes. You can only skip them after seeing them once!
36:15 - Now I want to hear Snake's opinion of Jojo in its entirety. I liked Part 2 a lot
I love seeing older interpretations of JoJo parts before the anime came out. Especially Zeppeli's gay pride hat
I think this video is what got me into JoJo... I blame you for everything lol
Posing to cancel combos actualy transverse over to the 2013 fighting game, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle
Those interpretations were hilarious lmao
11:01 Funnily enough in this fight Jonathan also confirms his doubts about Dio.
What do you mean, don't let his figure fool me? Are you telling me that brits in the 1800s weren't super manly and pure if they were gentlemen and had muscles that would make Hercules blush, even when they were 12? Prepostorous.
I'm pretty sure Dio being a lawyer was a joke about lawyers being bloodsuckers
Lmao, sorry, but I can't stop laughing at Jonathan posing like a ballerina everytime he parries an attack.
How can *ANYONE* dislike Johnathan Joestar?!
Hes the most gentleman JoJo!
JoJo World Order apparently they can. Not me though. Jonathan is bae.
+Cherti
Jonathan is the most upstanding JoJo
Joseph is the most smart JoJo
Jotaro is a more serious JoJo (thats why he won against Dio, Jonathan always was a noble fighter, not a serious one)
Josuke is basically an even more comedic Joseph.
Can't wait for Part 5 this October. HYPE!
I want platinum games to do a jojo beat em up
Any game with breathing as a mechanic is obviously good.
YOU LIKE JOJOS? HORY SHEIT!
OH MY GODUH!
I'm pretty sure that chieftain from the origin of the Stone Mask might be one of the Pillar Men from Part 2...
Which, luckily, didn't get a game adaptation.
“I dislike Jonathan”
bad opinion
Also, under absolutely no circumstance should you skip ANY part of Jojo.
