    I know this is an old vid but I got my first fbv sharpening last week and holy shit, the speed and grip is amazing. But you will lose the normal hollow as well if you step on a rock or go on dodgy ice as well. I got my old skates sharpened and went and played 30m of pond hockey, then when I went to play a game at the rink I fell twice turning right and saw that close to the heel the blade was dull and couldnt rely on my right foot pretty much at all. Was a frustrating game.

    you are correct, although it is awesome, it does lose it's edge faster. It wouldn't seriously effect the blade, it's no different feeling than when your traditional skates start feeling dull. Over here in Chicago, they were charging you more money to have them cut this way. So I stopped using them. They would need more frequent sharpenings but it was worth it. The cost became too much.

    I prefer traditional ROH, because I get more response and predictability in my turns. The flat bottom V may offer better glide; couldn't feel the difference, but had the loss of response, so mot worth it. There are a few NHL level guys going V, but still not that popular.

    I just got my skates flat bottom sharpened for the first time, had a hockey practice that day and I did terrible. The guy at the source told me that since I like the blades dull it would be a better choice for me, but I don't like the feel of it that much. I need to wear my skates down again!

    i have a question
    i don't know how long you've been skating on them but how long will the edge actually hold for?
    seems like it might wear down faster than a traditional sharpening. this would seriously effect the blade quickly

    Any physics professor will tell you that the rounded bottom is stronger. Also, the angle of the blade on the ice is much better & consistent with the rounded bottom. The blade on the ice is always gliding at different angles to the ice. For the best speed & Glide and Turning ability in all cases is the traditional method. This is a classic example of humans always believing what is new is better.

    The Hybrid design is old ie 1983. Harry Redmond with US Patent 4392658 covered the design, ie sharp edge for corning and flat area for gliding. Once the patent ran out it became popular. :) In the 1983 era a patent lasted 17 years. Thus 1983 +17= 2000. Blackstone came out with the FBV in 2008/2009. Once a patent runs out often another firm will use the design with no royality fees to pay out. The Sparx system's Fire rings are another type of usage of the old Redmond patent of 1983. www.google.com/patents/US4392658

      Appreciate the info but we're also aware of this.

      Once the patent ran out the design became public domain thus it birthed the FBV. A design from 100 years ago had adjustable blade sections at the edges. One could adjust the skate for better corning or better glide/speed. www.google.us/patents/US1100976 Many commercial items come out after a patent expires since there is no royalty to pay out.

    Welcome to Ice Hockey in the UK - everything is expensive. Although the guy in my team sharpens for £3, however he doesn't have a shop and staff to fund...

    • @Juniper458
      @Juniper458 7 років тому

      The problem is that in the UK we rely on nothing but sales when it comes to ice hockey. There are no sponsors or anything due to the fact that most people are interested in watching shitty football and rugby (which is not a bad sport in anyway but the principle still stands).

      if you skate hard you will have to sharoen your skates ever 2 ice times either way. if you are a floater then maybe you can keep it sharp for a while. haha

    paying more for FBV is crazy....there is no more work that goes into sharpening that way and is robbery...

      i sharpen skates so ill let you in on a secret. FBV is a scam. they dont last as long as ROH so it gets you in the store more and it costs more. it also doesnt help at all, its a placebo and people who use it are really gullible

    If the majority of pros don't use it then it's not better than the traditional. Pretty simple

    I just learned about skate sharpening from a guy from the UK. I think the mounties are going to come and take my Canadian passport away and sentence me to 5 years hard labour at a cabane a sucre.
