King Alo and Davey always make The Den for me. Both love different things but can talk with passion and meet in the middle, tossing off references that none of the other guys (or me, and I bet a lot of people out there) get.
They're the real Siskel and Ebert of the show though better because S&E didn't knows shit from applebutter about horror!

Thanks for the backhanded compliment! I thought they were reactionary hacks and totally given a disproportionate amount of weight for their opinions on films. While reducing things to a "thumbs up/down" system killed film criticism for a generation. Apart from that...I'm a fan! ;)

I think the base misunderstanding is in calling this a found footage movie. It's obviously analog horror, especially the whole end sequence. I think that sequence is in Delroy's mind to trick him into killing Lily and completing the ritual.

Yup, I saw this one too. Quite gnarly, actually! It reminded me of a cross between Rosemary's Baby and Network.
Pivoting a little bit, I just saw the latest film that's also from IFC Films and Shudder. It's called Humane, and it's directed by Caitlin Cronenberg - yes, she's David's daughter and Brandon's sister. Sort of like Soylent Green meets The Purge.

I really loved so much of this film. I saw it in the theater and let me tell you, the tone of this film was unsettling to everyone in attendance. Didn't mind the CGI at all, I understand that the budget wasn't terribly large. I do think it stumbled a bit at the end. It went for such a realistic feel the whole way through but then leapt into filmdom with a climax that was a bit too much for this modest film. Still, I don't hold it against these first time filmmakers and will absolutely be there for their next release.

David summed it up - the movie is the main character's payment for the deal he made that we gradually find out about. It's not literal. As the host comes to accept what he's done, the more the "reality" unravels. I have not seen the other film he and Chris were talking about but it's the punishment of the host that makes this more than a Ghostwatch clone. BTW, the Ghostwatch special used to air on PBS pledges in Cincinnatti, I watched it at college in the mid 90s.

I love when you guys review current horror movies. I'd love to hear your reviews on Immaculate, First Omen, Abigail, etc. Having said that , I didn't like this movie. It took too long to get to the horror, I didn't like the young girl, and I hated the "skeptic" in the group!

  • @manuelper
    @manuelper 2 місяці тому

Fun premise, playing off real life people like The Amazing Randi (the skeptic). I think the filmmakers didn't take enough of a risk to make it feel entirely like found footage (and no, I'm not talking shaky cam); but good performances. I score it a solid B but it could've been better.

The whole point of the not so great CGI, is that you are watching this film through the prism of the 1970s. The cgi was supposed to be naff to our eyes because back then tv quality was poor. Remember you are supposed to be watching a found tape recorded with old gear.

We did talk about it, but we landed on that it's such a shallow film there's not much to fill a vid. And that's not even a criticism, just that it feels like the Saturday Morning cartoon version of the characters. Though I liked it for what it was, Pete liked it and I can't recall who else watched.

It's probably my second favorite of the WB/Discovery/Legendary MonsterVerse after Skull Island. And it seems like it may become the highest grossing one soon - after having the most modest budget of them.
And, to think, I was initially worried that people were going to see it with the lens of Minus One and be disappointed.

Film sounds quite interesting and worth a watch but can I give you my experience of the original Ghostwatch? It seems to be regarded as a classic which 'terrified' the UK on original transmission but I watched it and thought it cheesy and bloody obvious from start to finish. Michael Parkinson did his best but Mike Smith and Sarah Greene couldn't 'act' to save themselves. I was well-versed in the various 'haunted house' tropes by then, so was disappointed that they even tried to pass it off as genuine. I suppose some genteel Parky fans were taken in but there's nowt so queer as folk.

My daughter told me about it. When i started watching it I hear Pentagram playing and I'm like wow this might be something. Not so much. I mean it's cool for some nostalgia. However, it has zero originality, and totally derivative. I don't see how the Bohemian Grove stuff fit in here. I was born in 1968 so I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I guess it's my age that makes me not care much for this. I knew nothing about this movie going in. The acting was awful. Even the ancient language spoken was lame. It didn't even sound cool. Maybe I'll try it again, but I doubt if I'll see anything that would bring me around. Now I'll watch this review and see if anyone agrees with me.
EDIT: The special FX were also terrible. If you don't have a CGI budget (I hate CGI), why use crappy looking CGI? Practical FX would have probably been better.

  • @FireMoon42

Too many questions: did he know when he made the deal with the devil (so to speak) that there would be consequences? So he lost BOTH his wife to cancer and murdered a girl on tv as the consequences? But surely since Lily started killing people using demon powers Jack could've claimed self-defense? What jury would convict him? Was it revealed to the audience at home that it was all Jack's fault? Were the alternate reality scenes at the end only in Jack's mind? Why would he so easily stab his wife to death? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
    (lol I don't get it)
