The work from this school's students never stops amazing me.
I know, right??!
holy shit these are STUDENT FILMS!???!?!?!
The Gobelin school is one of the (if not the) best 2D animation school in Paris (and in France too actually ^^). But it also means that to be accepted into it, you need to be GOOD. So even if initially it was meant to teach people about animation, now it's more students who already have a degree in animation (ranging from 2 to 4 years of practice, and I don't count the art foundation years) who come into that school to be able to freely create their films + get the school name on their resume. So yeah, "students" made these films, but they could be considered professionnals...
That being said, I love watching their films, it's always a delight :D
@@xana1406 They could be considered professionals, except they are not... I mean yeah ofc Gobelin is probably elitist, but still, these guys never worked in a studio, and their experience is quit limited.
@@xana1406
Well, I think if they're still studying animations then most likely they're not really professionals yet, even if they has some work experience. At least I guess so.
The fact that two murders equals the death penalty in Japan makes this so much more tragic.
Merci.
I don't think he k1lled them tho, just beat them up really bad
@@hiiloveu1521 br0 r3a11y w3nt "k1lled"
@@Vateir I have no idea how censorship in UA-cam comments works and I didn't feel like rewriting and reuploading my comment a thousand times 😭
@@hiiloveu1521 I don't think that's censored I've seen people say "you totally killed it dude!"
that art style. just wow
Love the differences in styles between the "real" and the film they watch... the backgrounds are rough but are also perfect... unreal how well the 3D cars fit with the environments, and the characters, nothing jars or looks out of place. So much time went into this, and it shows, really amazing work
i know right. They merged 3d and 2d better than most/all studios. I didnt even notice there was 3d until this comment
Can this be a full 2 hour movie? lol. I NEED MORE.
This is the point... actually there is never enough money or freedom (or both) for this. The short movies from school are often more interesting
Cé cile they are all amazing
My soul won't be able to handle it.
If only Gobelins would make its own animation studio/production! They would totally rank in with Disney and Ghibli!
Oh god thatd be so much work
Notice his yakuza tatoos were the same colors as the toy
Sky High Guy they’re also just traditional colors for yakuza tattoos. If the black dye is crappy or traditional tattoo dyes, it’ll turn blue in ten years and red turns pink and green turns yellow.
God, I just want all these short films to be full length films... They're freaking incredible. Well done.
Probably 25-35 min would be enough.
Everything I’ve seen on this channel has more value and moral, plot, texture and depth than any animation in the theaters the past two years.
I think "the clan" might be a metaphor for the cycle of violence the father has had to deal with his entire life. They ask if he thinks he can really escape it, and often times for people who live in environments with little opportunities, they can't. He wanted to hide that from his child so that they could have a better chance at escaping that cycle too, but it still caught up to him.
Or they are just yakuza... you know with the tattoo and such... (not disagreeing with the message though)
I do not disagree with your message, but the fact is, that he wanted to stop to be a Yakuza for his family. "In case of breach of the code of honor, it is customary to cut one's finger and offer it to its leader. The prosthetic market is well developed in Japan, because Yakuzas who want to leave the organization and return to a normal life are constraints to erase their signs of former belonging to the mafia." well apparently he did not do it, so the other Yakuzas looked for him for killing him. Because that's the code. (and if a Yakuza did a real mistake, he had to do Seppuku).
I wonder if these guys really were Yakuza or just some random guys. Yeah, it looked like they were pulling out guns for the boy, but it wasn't shown if these really were weapons or just wallets. Maybe the father was so paranoid about escaping from violent life that his mind just snapped.
Cab Yeah, honestly if that was the intention this was extremely well-made. You can understand the fathers paranoia but with how easy the men went down you don't know for sure if the father is just that strong or they were regular dudes and his paranoia got the best of him.

You should not hide the ugly truths, but show how to outrun them.

Pao Lah MŌ DAIJOBU DA! NAZETE? WATASHI GA KITA!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite films produced from this school. The color, animation, and story are all incredible. Everyone who worked on this project should be proud!!
Jules Rigolle is one of the best character designers I've ever seen. His designs are so mesmerizingly beautiful, even if the other aspects of the short film weren't as amazing as they are, I'd love it for Jules' designs
didn't expect to cry in a 5 minute video but I'm glad I did
Are you kidding me?!? Emotional fuckin’ tightrope over here and that’s the ending?? I don’t know anything about child service laws in Japan. Does the kid get taken away? Can the dad claim self defense or do the gang tattoos mean it’s straight jail? Does this family stay together or what??
Can’t get enough of the gobelins channel and the thoughtful and beautiful they share.
I believe the tattoos mean that he's a yakuza
Hey kai what's a yakuza?
@@crsdsamzoo1218 yakuza is the japanese maffia, back in the day only yakuza got traditional tattoos over their body to show which group they were part of, so alot of elders in japan still connect tattoos to maffia in general
I searched up on google about japan law systems and it is fucked up because japans crime rate is low the judge’s immediately assume that the person is guilty with this mindset that causes a conviction rate of 99% and considering at the start of the film they said to the father about thinking he could escape the clan most likely means that he is in the mafia and according to mafia rules you must pledge full loyalty until death
Can we take a moment to appreciate how well done the lighting is??? Clearly a lot of work went into this whole short! Well done!
This is why action movies should be animated more frequently. Think of the possibilities!
I saw this short on Vimeo, without any kind of subtitles and I was just blown away by the fact that I understood EVERYTHING... no, I don't know japanese at all (except what anime "taught" me XD), but what I'm trying to say here is that... this is SO well done, that you do NOT need subtitles.
This has inspired me in SO many levels.... congratulations to ALL the people involved. :,)
I Was Thinking The Sane Thing
Super Sane lol I ment Same xD
you want a medal or something? congratulations?
It’s Pieck, she's just saying that the story was so good that she understood even though it's not english.
You must be a fun person to be around. What's your problem?
@@GraceuponGrac3 i actually agree with It's Pieck
I hate it when I’m trying to buy ice cream after a long day at work and some Asian dude beats me up before I can pull my wallet out
They were turned the wrong way to pay for the Ice Cream. The Dad had his radar up to protect his son, have to notice the small things.
the fact that the people dont jump back when getting shot makes this so much more realistic
Omg this is one of the most beautiful lighting and background art in animation I've ever seen :O
Keep this beautiful story for after school.I want a sequel.
This was so intense, visually and emotionally investing my lawdd I feel like I've just watched a two hour film 😩😥 Phenomenal!
The lighting and art style of this is phenomenal. Can’t imagine how many hours of work went into making this masterpiece. Well done, as always!
Wow. Franchement... wow. Felicitations aux eleves!!! Bravo!
なぜなら、わたしが来た!」de All Might dans BNHA (^_^)
All I could understand was my hero academia and all might and hero/heroes
PLUS ULTRA !!!

moi aussi
Great animation, direction, and splendid voice acting
The Writing, Animation and direction in this short film is outstanding, I cant believe these 6 minutes outweigh so many 2 hour long Hollywood films !?
The Alfa Romeo 159 of the beginning is so beautifully animated. They payed a lot of attention to detail inside and out of the car, it’s a truly mesmerizing work
the background art and the color palette used for this animation is incredible, it's so lush and really conveys true emotion!
The ending though- IMNOTCRYINGYOURECRYING
I cry so easily, this was so beautiful, depressing, and very true...
Disney should pick this up and hire the team behind this to make a movie...It would sell
how can students make better animation than toei animation *cough* dragon ball *cough* super
Because most Japanese studios are practically animation sweatshops. They mostly adapt the work of others (manga, light novels, etc.) and the pay for the artists is terrible that they must make quantity over quality to survive in the business. There's no comparison between the singular vision of passion and effort that is a student film to assembly line stuff like TV anime.
Money is a huge factor. There's a huge potential gap in quality between what you can make to learn, and what you can make to sell for profit.
For something like this this probably took about a month or so where as for a show like dragon ball super takes way longer and I'm not sure but I think people have said that dragon ball supers animation is bad or horrible so yeah
@@laboon344 lol no, this short probably took about half a year to a full-year
@@levilivina2313 Yes these are their final projects at the school. They start writing them and the pre production work in september / october and have a storyboard by december. The goal is to finish them around may/june for the annecy festival
Magnifique.
On dirait que oui. e3e
The reflections and light are so real and beautiful
My super favourite among this year's short films! AMAZING. I especially loved the BKGs *__*
The artwork in this was stunning! Kudos!
always amazed by the final year showcases. 10/10 always
bro this had me in tears... especially the end when the kid made the robot say the thing... damn bro
I like how the intentions of the men in suits is left rather ambiguous, we dont know what they were grabbing from their pockets, was it a weapon? or just a napkin? It puts more attention on the father's fight or flight mode. How it directly correlates to the past of him being a part of the yakuza
In my opinion, this is the Gobelins film with the best soundtrack
Vraiment magnifique.
This is so good. If only it was a series....
yup still best short film I´ve ever seen
Beautiful animation, but I wonder why it's called "Strawberry ice cream". The fact the little boy wanted strawberry ice cream is such a small detail that I want to analyze all the layers of meaning behind the title. Also, that scene when the dad said "you know what real heroes do after a fight? They get ice cream" (probably not the exact quote) made me smile.
I really dislike 3d animation, so to see something thats 2d and this good is so refreshing!❤❤
This was amazing, I wish it was a movie*I bet you guys get that all the time*
How does this not have more views or likes? The art style and story-line were amazing, well done.
I just straight up cried when the kid put the robot down and let it talk, this just gets so many feelings to you in such a short time
oooh il m'a fais frissonné
So beautiful
Gosh the way his jacket slip and reveal the tatoos is wow
You never get to see if they had guns :o
Great animation. 👍
Now this is what I call adult cartoon short on gobelins
damn ths is probablt my favourite ever short film...the animation, plot, microfeatures and art style makes it god tier
This made me feel something, some sense of dread and worry throughout the film! This was incredible
A six minute short made me feel more than all Disney movies _combined._ Amazing.
Great animation, but I thought the kid should bring the dad some ice cream at the end because that's what heroes get. Maybe the vendor would give it to him for free for beating up the bad guys. Robot was good, though.
This short-film is very sad, very good job work animation. :(
Gobelins, you guys never stop amazed me
This is so beautiful I had to watch it twice..
For a moment I thought the blue figurine was a warhammer 40k space marine XD
Breathtaking
Only 1 minute in and I’m already crying 😭
They should really build on this storyline. Maan, I'd love to see more of this.
The story is so sad yet so heartwarming
C'est absolument sublime.. Bravo
i watched this film on vimeo and i absolutely cried.it really touched me in so many ways. this is a masterpiece.
I love every video on this channel
everything about this is just breathtaking
This was incredible. Gobelins never has failed to impress me!
I love the music when he beats the guys up
The animation in this is phenomenal! The end fight was so intense! This is INCREDIBLE! I love love love love Gobelins!!!!
Why doesn’t gobelins have more subs? They deserve more
Daaaamn the fx and lights were sublime.
beautiful piece!!
I adore these animations, I hope to aspire to this level of beauty and story telling one day.
I want more of this!!! It’s so well done!!
Another interesting thing i found. The Childs name is Kazuki. Kazu means peace in japanese, ki means enegy. Kazuki= peaceful energy. The mother and father wanted to simply live in peace. Even after her death, the father still lived a peaceful life. Ironically this peace was not achieved until he got rid of those making war with him.
Is that robot based from All Might? Also, this short film is awesome! I wish the animation school I attend was as good as this one.
Arturo Reyes Cortez I was thinking that too! (about the robot)
Ah, just commented about that too !
Arturo Reyes Cortez omg I was thinking the same thing!!
Beautiful.
Still my most favorite animation from this school.
A child will make a difference to man who lived by rules of violence and activistm.
The father want to leave a clan of yakuza to protect his loved family. End up being hunted by consequence. More than just rhetorically viewing, is a vivid portrayed message of how can a child change things and the consequences of things done.
