Me too. In the end, the MC lost and failed to find meaning in life. No matter what action she does, she will never be free from fairy land (mainly because she gave up on her morals).
The escalation into violence is kind of the whole point?? What’s there to understand? Skottie Young wrote this after watching endless kid’s shows and fairytale type media with his own children and then went “hey what if someone got stuck in this kind of world and got driven to mind-numbing insanity, snapping to the point where they kill everything in their path?”
I read this comic book as kid and I loved it and I love it more now so I will not stress this enough to say that Adult Swim absolutely need to make a series out this ASAP
I remember seeing this comic at a book fair, if you want another american based isekai check out "the wrenchies" by farel dalrymple. The story is a bit grittier but has a great blend rpg & apocolyptic elements
On one hand this sounds exactly like the type of comic 12 year old me would draw with stick figures and then show to nobody. I love that sort of twisted Fairytale stories even as a 30YO. On the other, looks like the punchline is always the same "Fairy Land is gory and/or gross and she kills" in progressively more unhinged ways. That doesn't quite work without actual commentary on what's being satirized (see One Punch Man for an example of how to do it well. See Disaster Movie for how to do it horribly horribly wrong)
I only read the first few chapters, but it was pretty apparent that this comic does lack a lot of storytelling content. It looks amazing, but it's hard to stay engaged because so little of consequence is actually happening. Kind of a shame, really.
@@ToothedKruxand now you know why Gertrude is miserable and hates where she is. The story sucks and nothing of consequence happens in fairy land. Nothing happens, nothing changes, she's there for eternity since she doesn't age and all her actions are meaningless until she gets back to the real world.
@@JoannaSunshineBun That doesn't make the story magically better however. Antiheroes feel so great because they react to a situation they empathize with and act in ways that others do not dare doing. They succeed where others don't. With Gertrude however you don't see any kind of progress, she just lumbers around, pretty much aimlessly, no progress to show for. Even for a "monster of the week" format the spectacles seem to be much too shallow to be entertaining, as there is no real struggle visible. Generally the works of Image Comics (the publisher of this comic) do sort of have a reputation of putting flashy graphics before stories, and I feel this is the case here. Seeing as the artist is also the writer, it does make sense. It's hard to write stories AND make art, as each takes a lot to master. A prime example are the Asterix comics, where the quality of stories plummeted after Goscinny died and Uderzo did both art and story.
Someone's you just need to sit back and see some mindless violence. Like this. Or Happy Tree Friends. Actually involved stories can be too high brow sometimes. It fills that niche nicely.
The story covered in this video is _20 chapters long._ In One Punch Man terms, that's just after Saitama joins the Hero Association and Genos moves into his apartment. Most of the commentary you're thinking of comes much later, the first 4 chapters that hooked most of the fanbase from the start are _literally_ "Saitama is overpowered in a shonen battle manga world, he's bored of it and then he kills a shonen battle manga villain in a gory/gross way" And you know what? It hooked so many people for a reason! That's perfectly fine! The premise broadens out to "a cool shonen manga trope happens and then it gets comedically undercut" and eventually commentary on the nature of heroism and strength, but other series that try to do that from the start with more nuance tend to flop because they don't instantly hook new viewers. What hooks people? Punching a DBZ Piccolo knockoff into chunky salsa. There's no shame in that. So even if you boil the IHF formula down to "Gert is overpowered in a fairytale world, she's bored of it and then she kills fairytale characters in a gory/gross way", surely you can see how that hook can sustain a simple 20 chapter story with excellent art, creative worldbuilding, a few neat twists and a fun mix of comedy and violence. There's plenty to enjoy in each chapter, it's exciting to see what concept's going to be riffed on next and how our main duo's going to deal with the next big headache. The sequel gets more complicated, but even it's just an added 40 chapters for a 60 chapter IHF series total. Murata's OPM is at an ongoing 200+ chapters and is quite bloated with many fights that are just excuses for more elaborate action setpieces outside of ONE's original webcomic concepts. There's no interesting commentary inherent in the year straight of drawing and redrawing Phoenix Man's fight during the MA arc, and there doesn't have to be.
@@Main_character_MACH That seems more likely. Either that or there is no Heaven, since the only people meant to die are bad people. Thus, there was never any need for Fairyland to have a Heaven.
I had one of her comics from a free comic book day many years back. I didn't really see her anywhere else so I thought she only had one comic book. I'm glad you covered her, and I'm glad she's getting recognition!
If I recall correctly, 95% of her problems could be summed up as "I refused to listen right so I got stuck" and didn't learn this even after 27 years. If you haven't figured out how to listen in 27 years, that's 1000% on you. There is a reason why the little girl who just came in could leave after a few days but Gertude couldn't.
10/10 art 10/10 humor 10/10 relatability 10/10 for somehow feeling nostalgic This feels like something perfect for adult swim and it feels like if I watched the whole series Id feel sad and melancholic that it ended.
The series biggest issue was always the lack of direction. Hence the first run was the best. The author couldn't figure out what to do with the Queen Gertrude premise, so she lost it at the start of the second run. Second Run was about her trying to find alternative methods to escape and dealing with new characters Duncan and Pervis. Third Run was about Gertrude trying to redeem herself. Neither run was overall that great, and the third run just ended with Gertrude dying. The 4th one was genuinely an improvement. Cloudia gets resurrected and starts massacring everyone in a rampage, forcing the Magic council to bring back Gertrude to stop her, who then uses her power to blackmail them into sending her home. (Thus setting up floundering Adult Gertrude who was the protag when it got revived a decade later). Personally with a full re-write I'd have kept the first run the same, merged 2 and 3 with the Queen Gertrude idea (have it be about her ruling Fairyland and running it into the ground, you can include some characters and elements from the other two, ends with her dying) and then the 4th run. If you still want 4 total runs have the 2nd one be about Queen Gertrude and the 3rd about her life in exile.
The comics with her being an adult we're really "meh" Like, it wasn't bad but out of nowhere, they just kill her and a "multiverse version" takes her place.
Gertrude would 100% fit on Kazuma's team in Konosuba. Think about, she's a girl who's actually older than she looks, she's got yellow on her so they can distinguish she's on Kazuma's team, she has pretty bad luck, and she's a capable, but also kind of a murderhobo and would constantly have to be kept in check my Kazuma and the rest. Also, she keeps Larry because the team needs a mascot of sorts. This also completes the five man band, with Kazuma as the leader, darkness as the heart, megumin as the smart guy, aqua as the lancer, and Gertrude as the big guy. Edit 1: ok, so I would like to say that, from what I remember from reading the comics, Gertrude doesn't kill everything (at least not on purpose) for no reason, and will kill for a reason, even if it's a very small reason, so she would still need to be kept in check, and/or directed to something else. As for why Kazuma would keep her around, the answer is simple; a somewhat stable income, and someone actually somewhat competent besides him. The income part, aside from Kazuma's stuff that gets sold, Gertrude could help gathering monster parts, and then selling them, since she doesn't COMPLETELY destroy the body, unlike megumin. As for the combat part, Gertrude, thanks to Larry and his hat, has MANY weapons, creatures, and tools at her disposal, which she seems to know how to use them all, and is Quick to learn to use weapons, as seen with the axe she took from Bruud the Brutal. She's also capable of growing as a person, as seen nearing the end of the first run, with Larry, and more so in the second, where she's grown up, and full on willing to help a kid get back home (If I do remember correctly, she might have been also planning on going back with the kid, but the point still stands). So I could see her being more like the start of the series Gertrude (as in the part where she kills the moon) with Kazuma and his group, but overtime, she could mellow out and come to gain a closer bond with the rest of the group, maybe even seeing them as a new family, even maybe come to terms that it's likely her parents aren't around anymore, and if she goes back to her world, she'll have no one. Edit 2: I removed the loli part and replaced it with girl
Wouldn't fit the tone. Megumin has a similar problem, she gets into fights, threatens people, and bullies Yunyun, but at least she doesn't kill people ( who aren't bad guys ) They wouldn't keep a literal murderer on the team
@@slavishentity6705just think her as berserker class, she will be fine with Kazuma but I doubt with Aqua and Megumin and perhaps lunatic townfolk.... Yeah they definitely on big danger around her
The most misunderstand part about Kazuma is he like lolis no! He doesn't! In fact how many times he pissed off by lolis? even he hate Iris at first. But that changed when she refered as big brother, so he was more like siscon not a lolicon.
I feel like all of this could have been pervented if the Queen tried to find the key for Gertrude instead of trying to kill her? I mean I can’t be the only one who thought about this right?
Like the rules preventing her from killing Gert, there might have been rules preventing Queen from doing it for her. Or maybe the queen is just a dick who didn't want to help seeing how Happy got the key in under a day 😂

I found out about this from my art design teacher, he had an issue and I was enamored by the contrast between a fairly, happy-go-lucky universe with graphic violence and slaughter ✨😈✨ Although upon first read (and the sentiment continues), I feel TERRIBLE for Ger and that issue when she had false hope of returning home with her parents, I legitimately cried.
The best thing about this story is how Cloudia was such a fucking hater that she’s willing to let herself be killed all because she wants Gertrude to suffer for all eternity, keep in mind, she could have lived happily as the Queen for ages to come but she actively went there just because of sheer hater juice flowing through her veins.

I read that comic when I was younger, I never understood the escalation into violence.
Me too. In the end, the MC lost and failed to find meaning in life. No matter what action she does, she will never be free from fairy land (mainly because she gave up on her morals).
I assumed being stuck in fairyland for 27 years drove her crazy.
What I don't get is why she's the only kid that ever got stuck there
@@Mewdo45she's dumb
The escalation into violence is kind of the whole point?? What’s there to understand? Skottie Young wrote this after watching endless kid’s shows and fairytale type media with his own children and then went “hey what if someone got stuck in this kind of world and got driven to mind-numbing insanity, snapping to the point where they kill everything in their path?”

this comic actually looks really cool literally the only isekai ive ever been interested in lol
The SpongeBob sound effect on the scary face close-up is perfect

I think i remember seeing Comicstorian reading this
He did. R.I.P Benny fr
I first heard of it on UA-cam years ago when Comicstorian posted it on his channel. RIP Benny
The comics with her being an adult we're really "meh" Like, it wasn't bad but out of nowhere, they just kill her and a "multiverse version" takes her place.

12:22 I'm leaving a comment. Please continue summarizing this amazing comic. It's my favorite! I love Gertrude!
Yoo this new Adventure Time manga is looking good
Thank you Comicstorian for covering this WAYYY back
Gertrude would 100% fit on Kazuma's team in Konosuba.
Kazuma looks away _once_ and there's a mountain of bodies right behind his team, with Gert sitting on top of them all.
..dont call her a loli....
Wouldn't fit the tone. Megumin has a similar problem, she gets into fights, threatens people, and bullies Yunyun, but at least she doesn't kill people ( who aren't bad guys )
They wouldn't keep a literal murderer on the team
@@slavishentity6705just think her as berserker class, she will be fine with Kazuma but I doubt with Aqua and Megumin and perhaps lunatic townfolk.... Yeah they definitely on big danger around her
The most misunderstand part about Kazuma is he like lolis no! He doesn't! In fact how many times he pissed off by lolis? even he hate Iris at first. But that changed when she refered as big brother, so he was more like siscon not a lolicon.

The thumbnail gave me PTSD from Cats don't dance
I feel like all of this could have been pervented if the Queen tried to find the key for Gertrude instead of trying to kill her? I mean I can’t be the only one who thought about this right?
Like the rules preventing her from killing Gert, there might have been rules preventing Queen from doing it for her. Or maybe the queen is just a dick who didn't want to help seeing how Happy got the key in under a day 😂
@@mycomnithegreat434 Yeah in all honesty she was really just a dickhead, I’m surprised she wasn’t already evil.

I found out about this from my art design teacher, he had an issue and I was enamored by the contrast between a fairly, happy-go-lucky universe with graphic violence and slaughter ✨😈✨
Although upon first read (and the sentiment continues), I feel TERRIBLE for Ger and that issue when she had false hope of returning home with her parents, I legitimately cried.
Talk about a royally screwed up person of authority.
