    Learning how to waterproof a shower is one of the most important things you can do during a bathroom renovation.
    Wedi is a great waterproofing method because it's been around for over 30 years, is easy to use, and comes with a 10 year warranty.
    The first step should be checking the stud walls in the shower. They should be plumb and even with each other.
    If a shower niche will be installed it's best to plan the tile layout and location of the niche before adding the wedi waterproofing panels.
    Apply a bead of wedi joint sealant to the tub lip then set the first wedi building panel in place. The first screw and washer should be 6 inches above the tub or shower pan. Then a screw and washer should be added every 8 to 12 inches.
    Add wedi joint sealant where wedi panels meet each other. Once all the wedi building panels are installed apply wedi joint sealant to the seams, corners, and shower transition. Then smooth the sealant with a 3 inch putty knife or wedi corner trowel. This will ensure the shower is 100% waterproof.

    So in a previous video where you compared 3 ways ( concrete, kedi-board & wedi board) you lined up the bottom of the board with the top of the tub on all sides. In this video you overlapped the wedi board on the "back wall" only. Can you give a description as to why this decision was made? I just picked up some Wedi and am about to start placing it i on the wall. I can space it out so it overlaps, but I need to do that now. Why did you do this two different ways?

      +Chivu Florin thank you, unfortunately we can only recommend the method Schluter recommends with KERDI-BOARD, to apply KERDI-BAND over screws and washers. We agree that using just KERDI-FIX would be awesome.

    • @TW-il4vy
      @TW-il4vy 4 роки тому

      I know this reply is late, but Schluter and Wedi are competing products and they both will void warranty if you use another brand. For an example, my Wedi rep says if I use a small Kerdi-band on a section of a shower/bath job, it voids Wedi warranty. Very silly, but they both really don't want you to use any competing product. Apparently Kerdi fix is completely different from Wedi joint sealer although they seem to share same function for each product, but that comes from my Wedi rep.

      I used Wedi a few years back for a tub surround. Their instructions say to notch the lower edge of the board (from behind), place a bead of sealant in the notch, and put it over the tub's lip, leaving a slight gap from the tub's finished surface. It worked like a charm and would eliminate the need for the strips on the back wall. BTW, despite the cost for Wedi board (it ain't cheap), I absolutely love it. Show me another equal quality product that's installed and ready to tile on the same day (imagine doing a walk in shower without Wedi). Thanks for the video.

    I have searched the internet and many Wedi youtube videos, and have not found an answer to this scenario. I have a shower where a couple of the adjacent walls do not meet at a 90 degree angle (as an example, let's say the walls meet at an inside angle of around 130 degrees instead). When installing the Wedi boards on those two adjacent walls, do you recommend that I put a mitre cut on the edge of each of the adjacent wedi boards. For example, if the walls meet at an inside angle of 130 degrees, I would put a 25 degree mitre cut on each of the adjacent wedi boards (180 minus 130 = 50 divided by 2 = 25). I think I would have to do this in order to make sure the Wedi sealant still has two edge surfaces that butt up against each other to make sure the joint is totally sealed. Is there anything else I should be doing to completely seal that joint? Or, is the wedi sealant still sufficient?

    Its a Dremel Multi Max by the way. I have the Multi Max 45 which has a quick release button. This is the best tool for flush cuts on the market.
    On the niche install, I think it could have used more glue to hold it down. It had no nails or screws attaching it directly to the wood studs, only some on the ends. It did not look secure enough.
    How does Wedi compare in functionality and cost over Schluter Kerdi board, or Hydo board?
    For a small RV bathroom install, this type of backer board is ideal for low weight and prevention of water leaks. My question is, how do you hold up the vertical wall tiles on Wedi board? You still have to use thinset mortar right? Can I use Polymer instead of water in the thinset mortar mix and also in the tile grout? Reason for this is - my RV is under constant movement like an earthquake. Polymer gives a rubber movement dampening effect on the tile and they don't pop out. Not sure if you can use Polymer on these new materials.

    @TW-il4vy 4 роки тому +1

    I really need a clarification please - you started 4" on top of the tub for the screws and then every 12" for the fasteners. I've asked this to my local area Wedi tech rep, and he's a real cocky know-it-all saying his way is the highway and you always start 12" from bottom whether on a shower pan or on top of a bathtub. I assume you use 4" because of a know-how after having done many remodels. Would you explain why you start at 4"? Have you seen Wedi bow out after tile job when started at 12"?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  4 роки тому +1

      first, it stinks that your rep is being cocky. We're all students and nobody is a guru, period. We were also told to start at 12" for showers due to the tendency for the Wedi board to bow inward and thus compromise the joint it makes in the shower pan rabbet; recall, Wedi shower pans have a rabbet joint that receives Joint Sealant and then the Wedi backer board. However, that rabbet joint doesn't exist for tub showers. Therefore we're okay using the screws at 4" above the tub deck.

I'm going to start at 4" as I see you guys do it and also see it on the manual illustration for the bathtub instruction where I see the screws pretty close to the tub deck. Thanks again!

    Very helpful video - I am about to install Wedi around my new bathtub. I cannot find any information about what kind of thinset and trowel are required with the Wedi system. I know Kerdi requires their own special trowel and unmodified thinset - what do you all recommend for Wedi?

    Thank you for the great film! The handsome contractor Steve in this film should be in Hollywood rather than in somebody bathroom though. Hollywood overlooked for sure!
    My contractor installed a waterproof sheetrock, but I want now a niche, like in this film. Can I cut out a rectangular for the niche, because wooden studs are not cut out or I need to remove corresponding sheetrock piece completely? My contractor didn't put any washers, would it be a problem? And if that sheetrock installed on the whole wall till the bottom already, can I put tile in the way that sheet rock is behind the tub and seal the edge somehow differently than shown in the film?

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 років тому

      Is the sheetrock going to have Kerdi or another sheet membrane of it? That's the primary concern

      I have a green (waterproof) sheetrock, 1/2 in. May I also know where I can find those washers, are they special, waterproof as well? Thank you for the quick respond. I know that I would need to complete the project myself, and though did a lot of stuff before, this is new for me, since I've never worked with thinset. You advertise free course, where is it? When I clicked on the link provided it shows $100, I assume it is more extensive course, is it so? And if you pay $100, for how long you can ask questions, is it for a month? Thank you for the quick respond and good film.

    How long do I wait to do a water leak test? Wedi is installed and I want to test to make sure everything is good prior to tiling. Thanks in advance.

      Wedi’s handbook states in as little as two hours after Joint Sealant is applied

  • @neilbertram1922

    Why do you shim the back wall with plywood (to bring the panel out and overlapping the tub lip), but then set the side panels on top on the tub lip (no overlap)?

    • @neilbertram1922
      @neilbertram1922 4 роки тому

      Ah, I read in another comment that it was just to save money on the sealant.

      Ya I was confused as well, But I see by Kohler's instructions they want the Water Resistant Board (Wedi Board) over the Tub Lip. So maybe the best way is to the Wedi Board over the Tub Lip on every side?

  • @ddaannmmaacc
    @ddaannmmaacc 3 роки тому +4

    I have heard endless arguments over placing the boards over the lip, keeping them on top, and even leaving a very small gap. Provides me with endless confusion before tackling a project. I noticed here with the back wall you installed it over the lip all the way to the tub. But with the side walls only put the board at the top of the lip. Why?

    • @never2be07

      Same here, I noticed my tub flange lip isn’t even straight across so I’m definitely not setting it on top of the lip. My flange is also like an 8th thick so even worse. I noticed the one he’s working with is like a quarter thick and it’s actually straight. In that case I would actually do it that way but not with my jacked up tub.

    • @johnfaine7977
      @johnfaine7977 3 роки тому

      As I understand it, some boards can wick water. Because of this, I am going to install mine on the top of the flange after I put flashing around the perimeter. We’ll see how it goes.

    What he does not discuss is the price. You have to special order a pallet from Lowe’s or Home Depot here in Texas. Over 2k for a pallet! I wish I had enough to do my shower though. I am sure it is worth the price!

      Go with Goboard instead. Got it from Menards at $26 per panel of 5'x3". The special caulk and screws to use with them you can find them online at Amazon or Contractors Direct. Just as good as Wedi board.

      We used one additional tube of sealant; had we not overlapped the main wall over the tub lip we would have needed two extra tubes

    Did you purchase any Wedi products to make this video? I can't be sure....
    Great video and voice-over, can we tame the use of the word wedi in future? Sealant can be called sealant not wedi sealant every 30 seconds, we knew it was branded by Wedi from the beginning of the video.
    Thanks for taking the time to film your work and explain to the viewers.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  6 років тому +2

      Thanks Ryan, the reason we say wedi sealant is because people have asked if they can use silicone or liquid nails with this system. The answer is no because silicone isn’t great in this situation and liquid nails literally burn holes through the panel and pan. While it’s painfully obvious to you (and me) that we’re using wedi, you’d be surprised at the questions we get. And yes, we bought all the materials for this waterproofing 👍

    • @shifty277
      @shifty277 6 років тому +1

      I was just messing with the sarcastic comment - Any authorised seller selling Wedi Panels should be telling the customers under no circumstances should their own sealant not be used. It's is a completely different composition and viscosity to silicone and liquid nails hence them having it manufactured and putting their name on it....
      I wasn't insinuating Wedi were giving your free stuff from to promote their stuff, just taking the mick that you used the name about 60 times in the vid lol.
      Nonetheless a great video, i'm a big fan of your channel and how you present your videos, it really does give the DIY'er or the "knows nothing person" an idea of how bathroom work can be tackled even if we decide not to carry out the work ourselves.
      Over and out.... and a thumbs up.

      no problem, sometimes it’s hard to tell if someone’s being sarcastic. It does take a long time to make videos. For every hour of footage it’s another 1-2 hours of editing. Since we shoot and edit the videos ourselves I can get a little cranky.

    The fact that you don't have a drop sheet and tape off the tub is beyond unprofessional. All the concrete bits of the wedi panels on the bottom while being walked on will scratch the crap out of that brand new tub. Takes 10 minutes to properly cover the tub well, just complete laziness. Prep work is key to a successful job. I'm honestly beyond shocked.........

    Would be better if Americans say 'neashe' instead of 'nitch'. It is not an English word. Why not write it different if you want it to be an English word. I found out after hearing 5 times 'nitch' that you meant niche. nitch sounds like snitch or bitch.
