If you know someone with a plant ask for a root around 6 inch's long lay it long ways about an inch deep. That's how I got red color. But haven't been able to order Roots any more been years ago when I got mine my sister wanted some I gave her Roots she still has hers . A flower show said she can't find the ones I got.
I have gotten an almost 100% germination rate by soaking in water in a Tupperware container for a week or two, changing out the water every few days. Figured this out on accident. I had totally forgotten about them and all of a sudden they were all germinated in the container. So excited.
I soaked my seeds , then planted in egg cartons. Lightly watered, covered with Saran Wrap and placed on top of the fridge. About a week later they had all germinated. Whoopie!
I have abot 100 seeds from my purple " dinner plate" luna this yr..seeds are chilling now. I treat them the same as my daylily seeds. I put about a half of cap full of peroxide in the water when soaking.
thanks for sharing Shaun.. good deal.. I have one that came back from last year on the same stock.. so happy as I don't really have these anymore.. hope for seed this year..
I just put a bunch in a tupperware container, covered, and placed in a window and most of them germinated in the water. I will be planting them. So excited. I think that was the best idea so you actually see when they are ready to go into soil.
Diane Mumm Garden Videos yes I accidentally forgot about them and they stayed in there for about 2 weeks. I changed out the water every few days or so and in about 2 weeks they were all sprouted. I planted them and now they are about 10-12” tall.
I enjoyed this video as it was an honest explanation as to how it can go wrong. I am about to try with my seeds, and if it doesn't work out for me, I won't feel like I am a terrible gardener! Thank you!
I read online that if you cut a notch in hibiscus seed it helps them germinate. I just ordered some seeds so I may try the cutting of the seed & your paper towel method
Diane, To plant seeds like hybiscus, peppers, rose of sharon etc I use a pencil. Touch the eraser to the soil, put it on the seed and it will stick to the eraser. Move over to the cell pack and push the seed into the ground equal to the narrow dimension of the width. use the pointy end to back fill after the cell packs all have seeds in them. Water from the bottom every few days but not so often as to make the soil soggy.
Hi Dale, yes this particular variety is a perennial , but there is also hibiscus that are not some are more tropical used as indoors in colder climates.. this one is a zone 5 and also self seeds..
Thank you, i kept getting some molding and thought I was doing it wrong, I'd never had seeds mold like that. I get it now they just have low germination rates. Now I will collect a lot more seeds and try again.
Thanks so much for the pink cloud seeds. I just planted them in a large hanging planter , covered it with clear wrap and set them in my outdoor greenhouse shed. Hopefully they will germinate! I did nick the seeds, so maybe this will speed the process. I appreciate you posting this video- nice to see what the seedlings look like when they germinate...
I'm lucky that I have a neighbor who cuts hers off before winter. She gave me pods. I think I went overboard and live in a small apartment. I have so many that sprouted. I got tired of planting individually. I put a lot in a pot and they have all come up.
The seeds have a very hard covering. After the the cooling process, put the seeds in a pickle jar with aquarium gravel and shake about 5 minutes. That helps to break the hard covering allowing germination
I got a huge plant over 15 years old . Some I ordered from root about 6inchs long . All you do is dig a hole an half inch deep and as long as the root cover with dirt. I planted mine in the ground. I have red , white , white and red , pink. These are the old timer ones really hardy. I live in zone 5. Mines the huge ones
The plastic bag you had the seeds in looked to be closed keeping all the moisture in which is why it was molding. Try leaving the bag open of just cover them with a light plastic but they need to breath. I have 9 colors of hibiscus in my garden.
@@wdeer5354 yes they can.. I have had some also self seed , just depends on the variety .. they do like the stratification period.. putting the see through a cold treatment.. hope that helps
Thanks for the video, Diane. I had started some seeds you sent me, but no luck yet. Will try the paper towel method. I do have a couple of light pink ones I have had for years. Will have to look for seeds from them this fall.
I saved the seeds from a number of plants last fall, stuck them in the freezer for a month, let them thaw for a few weeks, stuck them in the freezer again. Early this years I planted them in sixteen packs, around twenty seeds per cell some cells produced seedlings within a couple of weeks, some cells have taken four or more months to show any sign of life bur they are now full of little plants. It is August in Colorado and I'm wondering what to do with the plants over the winter? They seem too small to survive outside. (I planted a "grown from seed" plant outside last year, it did not survive.)
I live in zone 9 and it is now coming into fall. Can I plant the seeds that I bought recently now with a germination light or should I hold on to the seeds until early spring? Should I use a planting medium rather than soil to germinate the seeds.
How are they doing? I used to plant most perennials in Jan and Feb .. as it takes them a while to get established.. but it can be done later too.. good luck!
Hi there, I often wonder what they do to those large grapes to get them so big... never grown grapes don't have much advice on them , try googling it.. my no 1 questions answered..:) good luck growing.. I have some blueberries seeds still in my freezer I may start them once our weather warms here in the midwest..
Great video Diane. I live in western Pennsylvania, outside Pittsburgh, and have several beautiful and huge, some of mine are 7' hardy hibiscus' in my yard (several varieties). In the fall I will definitely save some seeds and try the paper towel germination method. I may have missed it in your video but when should I place my seeds in the paper towels? Jan, Feb, Mar? Also, approximately how tall should the seedlings be before I transplant them in the ground? Thank you so much for all your help and I did subscribe :).
+Cynthia Car a good time would be late Dec, early Jan.. gives them plenty of time.. you may need to put these in the frig then pull them out to plant.. transplant when they get their first true leaves.. or you could do it later.. I have with no issues.. thanks for subbing my channel..
Well I think I learned something, imagine that as old as I am. Did you say that these Hibiscus come back from ground level. I always thought of them as shrubs or trees didn't know there was a perennial variety that comes back from the ground level. The only one that I know of that is hearty enough for this area is, Rose Of Sharon Bush or Althea Bush Hibiscus syriacus, I don't have one but there is a very old one at my aunt's house.
Plants often bloom from seed in their first year and will often self seed in suitable soil conditions. Division: Perennial hibiscus can be divided in spring. Be careful working around the soft new shoots. They do not usually tolerate fall division or transplanting
I will be growing more in the little greenhouse once it warms here... hopefully sharing lots more...my thoughts are mold is not good... I had this happen with rose seeds... there may be a process to help with mold formation , something to research...
I couldn't get them to germinate with any method so on the 11th of may I direct sowed 6 seeds of cobaea scanden outside in my flower bed I hope they sprout! :/
Thanks for the helpful video! I bought varietal hibiscus seeds. I really liked these varieties in the online store. I waited this package for 1.5 months and finally I've got those seeds! I haven't planted them yet. But I plan in the coming days. I heard that you can grow seeds in slightly wet perlite by placing them next to a hot battery. I don't know if this method is worth trying? It worked with the seeds of daylilys...
Years ago I ordered roots about 5 inches long. Dug a hole layer them down covered them up. I grew red and white ones this way. These were the dinner plate ones year later gave my sister some roots. Years later I found out you can't get these any more I have a really rare breed. A Nursery ask for some seeds to get them started again.
since it has been so long ago, I don't think I did either.. I know the seeds do best when kept in the frig for a while they bring out and plant.. soaking probably would be ok but just for a day maybe..
Enjoyed the video. I bought some hibiscus seeds over the internet, took 4 of them ,placed in store bought soil in jiffy pots, sell said do not nick them. planted 4 and in 5 days they had germinated and are looking good.. when should i remove the box cover and let them have full air ?
wow!! you have so many seeds! love them... we live in East coast, which is not an ideal weather for hibiscus. But I love the flowers and I wanna really give it a try. Can you please send me some seeds, since you have so many of them? If you are interested let me know :)
+Crystal Scott plant them stem and root in soil.. Let them grow a little bit to make it easier..otherwise it may be hard to tell which way to plant them..
You can dry them for tea, or put fresh in salads, and I've seen them preserved like Maraschino cherries and put in champagne. I've never had a problem but another comment said they're a laxative.
Have you had any success growing hibiscus from seed? post below...
If you know someone with a plant ask for a root around 6 inch's long lay it long ways about an inch deep. That's how I got red color. I put the seeds inside damp paper towel then inside a ziploc to sprout, You get more coming up that way

HI Katie, this is wonderful to hear... I honestly did not realize soaking would work that long without hurting the seed.. good to know.. thanks
Just water by itself? No soil?
I will try that way!
I soaked my seeds , then planted in egg cartons. Lightly watered, covered with Saran Wrap and placed on top of the fridge. About a week later they had all germinated. Whoopie!
Hello , did you soak in just water only?
did you cut the side of your seeds first?

i agree. you must do the paper towel germination method every time.
Thanks for the video. Can I use regular potting soil mix? Please let me know

Hey Bob, I was told I have to knick the seeds and place in water over night. Is this correct? i don't wanna knick the seeds. lol
Do you sell seeds im very interesting... thank you
I suppose I could sell seeds I have never thought of it.
The truth is other than postage I would give them away
@@bobhuffman4115 please sell me seeds you have beautiful hibiscus tell me how much and how many seeds you going to send? Thanks
yes save yourself some time and paper towel them.. I know I will have plenty come up for seed outside but always fun to try indoors...
Diane Mumm Garden Videos do seeds germinate in the ground? It snows in Indiana.

here in san diego they flower better in winter time than in mid summer !!! the overnight 50s dont fase them at all
I have seen many plants I have grown here thrive in San Diego year around..

Are you asking me or Diane? This post is from 10 years ago.@@kristenelliott5245
Once they sprout, do you plant the tails up or down in the soil?
the tails are the root.. so down..
I have a huge one that's been in my yard for 4 years
Can't wait to try this.

It’s sad that after four years you never got a response. If you happen to get this, did you plant? did it work?
So mine are brown and dry, but not splitting yet, should I be ok???
yes Eric I believe they will be just fine and ready to harvest..
I'm just starting seeds here in Indiana? Will they work?
