now I want to buy one and plant for what would have been my 52 Anniversary. Steven died October 16th 2015. I always remember him and birthdays. Thanks for sharing!
I found some at Lowe's at the end of the season at 75% off and just kept them in my room with no water. All are alive! Thanks again! Now I am hooked. ha!
I live at the Jersey Shore(USA). I have one in full sun, sandy soil, never fertilize and rarely water unless we have 7+ days of no rain. It is always huge (5 feet tall and 6 feet across) and during this time of year (late July) it puts on a fantastic show! In the winter i cut it right down to the ground and wait for May for it to start again. Its always the last perennial to shoot up. For me it is also somewhat invasive
Hello , where we are in Australia we don’t have a cold winter ( frosts, snow ) so our Hibiscus 🌺 don’t die in the cooler months , they grow all year around 🇦🇺👌👒🧤🌱
That's so great Karen! Is that the tropical hibiscus? There are so many different species, some require cold to bloom and some are tropical like yours 😁😊
Y Garden All varieties of hibiscus 🌺 we can grow almost anything other than plants that don’t survive on the coast ; even veg practically all year round as our climate allows us too ; I’m up on the mid north coast of NSW ; we do have seasonal , annuals and perennials though but mostly all year round ( Port Macquarie is my home ) surrounded by several beaches ; bush land and the habitat of the Koala ; as you would have heard of all the devastating fires we had and lost thousands of native animals and birds in that Terrifying time ; Love to garden and love your videos so thank you so much look forward to more of them 🇦🇺🥰🧤👒🌱🌺🐝🐨
Aww Hibiscus, 1 of my mom's faves, they grow wild in the marshs here on Maryland's eastern shore, wish I could share a photo. The wild pink are fabulous, I'm always thinking I'll dig some up one day. Yours are Beautiful....Thanks for the info shared in this video.
Beautiful.......I have a Midnight Marvel hardy hibiscus plant in a planter on our deck. I cut the blossoms and boil the petals in water for 10 minutes to make an herbal tea called Jamaica. After cooled, I add a squeeze of lime juice and a couple drops of liquid stevia for sweetener, and this makes the most beautiful and tasty summer tea.
Thank you so much! This year, lots of little white or grey mites on my large potted hibiscus! And I used neem oil spray a few times and also few few blooms this year. (But its on my twisted trunk hibiscus tree. ) not sure how different that variety is from hardy hibiscus planted in ground.
I’m in zone 9 mine grow in straight clay around my pool. I also have some in the front. My biggest pest on them is Japanese beetles. I do the same and give them a top dress of compost. They like it very warm, mine begin to bloom around June-July when the temps are above 80-85 and higher. If you sacrifice your first set of buds and give them a pruning they will branch out and put on double and triple the amount of buds. I cut mine back in November before frost (we only get a handful of light frosts here) and leave about 2 inches of stems which turn woody- but helps me ID where they are planted. I mulch them also which helps retain moisture. This year I’m putting everything in irrigation.
I had a major white fly infestation and bought some Neem oil on-line. None available locally. Since the backs of the leaves were TOTALLY covered in white flies and I had to wait for the mail order, I used a strong water spray to wash them off and it worked beautifully. I just did it twice and the flies disappeared. I had tried DAWN detergent but that was a fail. I actually cut the lower branches off in order to provide sun to the herbs I had underneath. Looks more like a tree than a shrub and is 7 ' tall! Gorgeous and I will always keep in the in herb garden to provide shade AND to snack on daily. The flowers are DELICIOUS! Can't say enough about hibiscus. Mine is purple and may be a rose of sharon but I know others that call it an Althea. Thanks for an informative video.
Awesome! We recently moved to our new home. The previous owners had 3 different types of a hisbiscus. I’m pretty new to the gardening world, so I’m learning lots of great tips with the gardening UA-cam community.
I love hardy hibiscus. I have Luna Red, Peppermint Schnapps (which has blooms that are about 12" across), and Plum Crazy. I did have a white one but it didn't come back one year. Talk about a "wow" factor. The blooms are incredible. One other great thing is they bloom later in the summer when many other flowers are done. My tortoise loves to eat the blooms. I wish I had room for more actually. But they want a lot of space.
I planted two in my garden this past summer not knowing how well they would do in my hot Texas zone 8b but they loved my soil! I guess I need to plan to move them since they do get so much bigger than I had originally knew. Thank you so much for the information, I also used need oil on all my flowers including my hibiscus so I will be needing to Shane that as well, thank you for information! Hugs and love from Texas!
Gotta love hardy hibiscus. I have a Midnight Marvel, and a Mars Madness which are very similar plants. Both have burgundy foliage. Mine are in full sun but they don't have any more blooms than yours seem to.
The hibiscus are beautiful in your garden Yuliya! 😉 Hibiscus also come in so many colors like, white, peachy, pink, hot pink 🌺 and yellow and I'm sure others I didn't mentioned oh like rose of Sharon I've see in lavender . Thank you for sharing!

Thank you i just planted my first in the Spring. I am in Pa. It took a while to start it was really small when i got it. Almost gave up on it and now it is beautiful about 3 ft at most but budding like crazy. It is in a wetter spot full sun though. I will definitely get another next yr. Your info was very helpful. Mine is the first one u showed i cant remember name u said. Only problem i am noticing many small holes on leaves like u described. I think i will wait to do anything now since its late in season. Hope that is not a mistake. Saving this video for next yr to refer too. Happy gardening. We had a terribly wet and hotter than usual summer here.
Y Garden I’m having this issue now. Snails are eating my plants and maybe some other insects. Any additional advice to help save my hibiscus from these critters?
I have several and our pest infestation, in the Denver metro area, now are the Japanese Beetles. They decimated my Hardy Hibiscus last year and this year. They are so hard to get rid of naturally. So they've been winning since I don't have a ton of time to pick them off manually. Last year they also went after all my Eggplant.
I have only one so far since I moved to a new area late spring and I have always loved them and will add more in future years.....I had one previously called Pinwheel and i have not seen one since . The pedal color alternated Pink and white and it was gorgeous, would be ecstatic to find another one
Yes I have the same cranberry one! Love it. I think it might depend on the companies trading marking names maybe. It could be the size of the flower too. I need the white variety now because I hardly have white flowers in my garden.
Thank you for your video. I bought a Rose of Sharon this year and I have it in a raised bed container. It’s doing very well, has lots of buds and it’s about to bloom. I’m in zone 5, how can I protect it from the harsh winter ❄️
I have that flower 🌼🌸😏 in my yard and it have flower bud but only one or two will bloom out at the same time. It's a beautiful plant 🪴 mine blooms are yellow. 💛😍
This really helped me out! Thank you for letting me know to NOT use Neem Oil on them. I just planted 6 Hibiscus this week in my front flower beds and did not know this. Plus educating me on what I should use will save me tons of frustration. I LOVE that gorgeous "Heart Throb" variety. My new obsession is Hibiscus - using yellows and reds - have not seen your red variety in my area - will be searching for it. TFS :D
I had a terrible problem with sawflies here in Michigan until I started using Bayer Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed. Problem solved. Thank you for sharing your information and beautiful hibiscus. Love ya!
That is a systemic. It will get into the pollen and nectar of the plant and damage bees and butterflies. Please consider not using systemics on flowering plants at all.
Didn’t know that about Neem oil on hibiscus. I had relentless spider mites across my garden last year and was trying neem oil for control. This explains the sad flowering in my hibiscus!
Currently I’m growing Mars Madness Hardy Hibiscus in a big container here in zone 7b. Hopefully they will do better this year. I didn’t have it in full sun which they prefer.
My daughter bought me a packet of seeds from some place overseas, I planted the seeds and got about twenty plants but I was not sure they were hibiscus, they are about ten months old from germination,I live in the west Indian island of Trinidad, they are all in the full sun, I'm anxiously waiting for blooms
I have 4 of these (Head over heels Passion and Blush, Summer in Paradise, and Luna White) and have been looking like a mad man for red ones but I did order some online (Midnight Marvel and BlackBerry Merlot) and will look for a Luna Red as well. I LOVE these plants and think the giant flowers are hilariously huge. My German Shepherd was afraid of the flowers when they started blooming and I had to convince him that they weren’t going to eat him by petting the flowers 🤣🤣
Also, what would you recommend for white flies on these? I dont have a lot but I do see some flying out of the plant when I search. Haven’t found any infested leaves or anything but I do see a few of the bugs here and there and some days more than others.
I’ve been wanting to try this kind of 🌺 hibiscus. The initials H.M. could stand for “Her Majesty” these are so regal. Thanks very much for sharing the info about its care. I must get some! For some reason it is easier to buy tropical hibiscus here although they still behave like annuals in Upstate SC. 🌺Have a great day!
This is the first year I found these I bought two of the red ones and can't wait to see if they come back next year!! I needed this information badly thank you so much!!!
Me too. Mine grew like crazy after planting . Cant wait to see if it comes up next yr. I want to get one of the red ones for next yr. I planted in full sun and wetter spot. Good luck with yours. They are gorgeous.
@@melissamclaughlin3240 wait! So these can be placed in direct sunlight and be fine? I'm always killing my plants so I stick with artificial plants and flowers but I want to try my hand at this again.
thanks for your video. I got a really small/young perennial hibiscus a few months ago and put it in a large container for this season. I'm a little nervous about transplanting and not sure when to do it, but I know it's going to need more space next year. it had sawflies too but I caught them very early and picked the larvae off a few times, easy for a small plant not so much big ones like yours. between that and the heat wave no pest issues (hopefully)
Strange you say that about Neem oil & Hibiscus . My dads 5 rows of 20 yo Hibiscus looks awful this year...curled and twisted leaves. I only found Japanese beetles on them so I used the Neem oil and they look so much better (had to cut off the disfigured parts) it took care of those Beetles too.
I am new to gardening and we had the most beautiful hibiscus this summer. They are in pots. Do I just cut them down to the soil? The pots are too big to bring inside
I just purchased two from the clearance section at Walmart for $4 each. I don't really have a green thumb so the plants I've been purchasing have been on clearance. I'm not sure what kind of hibiscus I have or how to care for it, lol, so we shall see!
Hello. Our hibiscus were infested with fly/worms that create white fuzz underneath the leaves. We tried several methods including dish soap and agricultural oil. Nothing helped. We finally trimmed them all the way down to the stumps to start over again. You mentioned something that would work in this video, but I couldn't understand what you said. I switched on the CC, but it gave some other word that didn't make sense. So, what is it that you recommend to rid these pest from hibiscus?
Are you kidding -- not enough blooms!!!! Wowzers!!! You have a great collection of Hibiscus. I have pink and red in full sun and don't get as many as I see on yours. Based on your tips it's probably because I don't give them enough water -- they are in an island where it's hard to put a soaker hose for fear of the lawn mower running over it -- been there done that! And the tip on giving the compost 2" in the spring was good. Will have to remember that! Had the Cherry Cheesecake at one time but I don't know what happened to it. Oh -- one more thing -- is Snow Queen Hibiscus hardy? Thanks.
Thank you!!! I top All of my beds with compost or manure on the spring. It makes a HUGE difference! Unfortunately the snow queen is not hardy but oh boy is it a beauty!
This was everything I wanted to know I have a hardy one and I live in the north of England with cold winds fingers crossed hope to be able to put it outside some times during the summer but so scared to lose it may bring it in the conservatory if any cold winds.Thank you for your video👍
We live in a cold climate with snow every winter and they do just fine. At the end of the summer they will start to die back. Prune them off about an inch above ground level and wait until spring. They will grow back again getting wider every year. They LOVE sun. If you have them in pots they need to be insulated from the weather in winter but need no help if they are in the ground.
I’m in Ontario Canada Zone 3 with snowy winters reaching -25°C. I do not cut back the stems until after the danger of the last frost, to avoid root rot, because the stems are hollow. Once I begin to see new growth by mid-May, I cut last year’s woody stems back to ground level. Happy gardening 🤗
I grow H. coccineus , scarlet star a native to S.E. USA and it survives here in W.N.C. in zone 6b. Bright red star shaped open petal flowers. It might be good if you ever wanted to create a hybrid, since you live in the garden state. Who knows you might develope a new variety. I'm not sure , but I think Lord Baltimore was developed from this specie.
These are some of the most beautiful Hibiscus! I wonder if they will do well in warm, humid tropical climate as well here in South East Asia? I think many of the beautiful Hibiscus hybrid varieties with huge plate-like flowers that do grow here probably have been hybred with these Hardy Hibiscus already.
Hello, I've come back to your video to ask a question. I planted a bunch of these hibiscus in May. I was told to be patient, that they wld come up. Well by the end of June I only had one hibiscus come up from the seeds I planted in the ground. I started more seeds in some starter pots in July. Now I have 5 plants. Should I go ahead and plant them in the ground? They are about 2-3 inches tall. My husband said I shouldn't have planted them this late, and I'm worried he is right lol any help wld be much appreciated!
Those are beautiful I'm going to get me some🌸 are these pollinators? when are the best time to plant them in zone 6 Michigan this year I bought two knockout roses and later on down the season I noticed that I had saw flies! can I use the same pesticide on the Roses? I'm glad that I subscribed to your Channel you are amazing and very knowledgeable. Thank you for good the information💁

i have a berry awesome hibiscus i have it in a container i put it in garage in winter then outside in spring what to do with the long stems in the garage
I have a single stem Hibiscus or Rose of Sharon growing this year....never had it before. It's 42 inches tall and all buds/flowers on top.....it's a single stem which I had to stake ...it started to flop over. will it get more shoots? and bush out? or is this a different variety?

I'm a little nervous about transplanting and not sure when to do it, but I know it's going to need more space next year. it had sawflies too but I caught them very early and picked the larvae off a few times, easy for a small plant not so much big ones like yours. between that and the heat wave no pest issues (hopefully)
Just discovered ur channel from my recommendations & I'm loving all of ur vids! U are so inspiring! New subbie👩🌾💚
Beautiful flowers I love them. Thank you for sharing the great information.
Thanks for watching!!!
Gorgeous! I want them all.
I got one of those plant month ago I wish the bloom would last longer friend.
I just got one 2 weeks ago. I love it! I want more!
Hello, did you know from the ones you got you can simply cut it and clone it and voila, you got yourself another plant for free.
@@ForeignSpices 😲 I did not know that! I will absolutely be trying that this summer. Thank you 😊
@@hmbogi I wish you the best with it.
I am new to gardening and we had the most beautiful hibiscus this summer. They are in pots. Do I just cut them down to the soil? The pots are too big to bring inside
Beautiful flowers
I just purchased two from the clearance section at Walmart for $4 each. I don't really have a green thumb so the plants I've been purchasing have been on clearance. I'm not sure what kind of hibiscus I have or how to care for it, lol, so we shall see!
Good luck! they are so pretty!
Might be tropical hibiscus which mostly thrive in warmer weather. I'm I'm CT and will bring my tropical hibiscus trees inside before winter comes.
@@JayMa061107 welp, they died! I tried lol.
What a steal!
thanks for neem oil tip!
My God, they are huge & beautiful. Very interesting.
love the hearthrob
Spinosid. Sorry if i was mumbling, will try better next time :)
the only one I have is the snow queen hibiscus- it has variegated leaves and I just love it, even when its not in bloom.
@Suzyqs it's a beautiful coral pink color
great vid ! love hibiscus flowers!
This was helpful. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the information 💕💕
This is the video I needed! This is definitely on my on my list of things to plant next year.
Thank you! 🤗💕
..
I am from Hawaii and grew up with Plumeria and Hibiscus plants. My question is you living in NJ, do the Hibiscus plants live through the winter??
These are some of the most beautiful Hibiscus! I wonder if they will do well in warm, humid tropical climate as well here in South East Asia? I think many of the beautiful Hibiscus hybrid varieties with huge plate-like flowers that do grow here probably have been hybred with these Hardy Hibiscus already.
Maybe! They are beautiful and worth trying
That Maple in the background is amazing! (as are you of course)
Paully oh yeah! It’s is a beauty! If you want to see it in fall color search for my fall color trees video 😁 so worth it
@@greatgardensforall do you know how old the tree is?
Thank you for this video, very informative!!
I bought 9 after seeing your hibiscus! ha!
Sawflies are common on roses as well. You can plant hibiscus now! they have a lot of sales at the moment in nurseries too!
have you ever planted your seeds, i have got an 3x5 table full of seedlings (up to 18 inch tall), from 15 different plants, anxious to see how they turn out.
No, but that's interesting to try.

Beautiful! With my rose of Sharon I cut large buds the afternoon before, and they open the next day in the vase. Would that work with these flowers?
Aliza Cooper don’t think so, these are real delicate
Amazing flower I love it ♥
I love this plant .. They all do seed except the red one🤭 .. I grow them from seed and give them away ..
I have a question, we had a major lots of rain storm, it has completely crush flattened to the ground all seven of them . Will it stand back up ? 😢 Do I need to support them like tomato cage stand ?
i have a berry awesome hibiscus i have it in a container i put it in garage in winter then outside in spring what to do with the long stems in the garage
I have a single stem Hibiscus or Rose of Sharon growing this year....never had it before. It's 42 inches tall and all buds/flowers on top.....it's a single stem which I had to stake ...it started to flop over. will it get more shoots? and bush out? or is this a different variety?
Great Video Thank-You Dear Friend,How Do You Propagate Them??
Very nice👍& very helpful
