We sang this at my daughter's funeral. It gave me such peace and hope of seeing her again. She passed away at only 10-1/2 weeks. I praise God that we have music to sing that gives us hope, draws us nearer to Him, and can reach people in their hearts.
I cannot imagine the pain of your loss, but I agree that we are truly blessed to have such beauty around us. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family, and for your little one
I am beyond sorry for your loss!😭 We have redemption through Christ and though there are unanswered things and pains and sorrows, the fact that Christ "has conquered the gloom" as this song so beautifully and eloquently puts it, gives me hope for that beautiful day when He will raise His children to everlasting life. I do very much look forward to seeing your daughter on that bright day! 💒

Waterson:Carthy sing The Old Churchyard Come, come with me out to the old churchyard, I so well know those paths ’neath the soft green sward. Friends slumber in there that we want to regard; We will trace out the names in the old churchyard. Mourn not for them, their trials are o’er, And why weep for those who will weep no more? For sweet is that sleep, though cold and hard Their pillows may be in the old churchyard. I know that it’s vain when our friends depart To breathe kind words to a broken heart; And I know that the joy of life is marred When we follow those friends to the old churchyard. But were I at rest ’neath yonder tree, Oh, why would you weep, my friends, for me? I’m so weary, so wayworn, why would you retard The peace I seek in the old churchyard? Why weep for me, for I’m anxious to go To that haven of rest where no tears ever flow; And I fear not to enter that dark lonely tomb Where our saviour has lain an’ he conquered the gloom. 𝄆 I rest in the hope that one bright day Sunshine will burst through these prisons of clay, And old Gabriel’s trumpet and the voice of the Lord Will wake up the dead in the old churchyard. 𝄇

I love this song more and more every time I listen to it. First I was drawn to the melody and harmonies, then I heard the lyrics which are even more beautiful.
Good for you! In the 70s we used to follow them round the country, when it was the three siblings and Martin Carthy. Electrifying. That sound just went right thrugh you. You could hear Norma without a microphone about five miles away :-) For Pence & Spicy Ale and Sound Sound Your Instruments of Joy are probably the best albums. See if you can find Regal Slip too -- they were great.
Interesting I was just thinking the other day how literature and songs from the 1800s and before focused so frequently on death, the afterlife, morality, coping with the sorrows on earth, divinity, etc. You don't see that anywhere near so often in modern literature and music. Wonder if it's because culture is geared to pandering to the youth these days (and thereby selling them lots of shiny nice toys), and those are not subjects which interest young people much, where before, authors and writers were aiming for the grownups, and people who were ready and willing to spend time thinking about death. Of course, part of it is just that before modern medicine, death was a plain part of life, and _anyone_ might die at any given day, and it'd just be business as usual. Now every seems to think of a 70-year life as some sort of right, and don't really consider the reality of mortality. It dawns on you more and more the older you get, but once upon a time it was something for everyone to think about and be aware of. Not sure but that it wasn't spikritually better for people to never be sure if death was waiting for them next week. I mean, the same is true today, but no-one thinks of it. WE all go about life, knowing that SOMEONE might die next week....but not US. But of course, we MIGHT. It happens still.
Life was cheap and dangerous. “Be glad you’re alive and happier still when your suffering ends”. Compare the lyrics of “Work, Boys, Work (put your shoulder to the wheel)”, that as long as you have enough to buy a meal that’s all you need in life, to a disgusting pornographic song like W.A.P. Or Ariana Grande licking semen off her wrists. We also believed that death wasn’t the end. Now, people are by large nihilistic amoral monsters. Get dat bread nigguh.

I like this song very much. Please accept Jesus as your personal savior by repenting from your own sins, converting into His name, and being saved by grace, as a God's free gift to you my friend. Be a born-again Christian (2 Corinthians 5:17). Read also John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-10, and 1 Timothy 2:5. God bless you
@@garthgoodare802 Please read the Bible without any preconceptions and an open-mind and try to discard all the fake news contrary to Biblical truths which you have been fed during your lifetime. I would suggest starting with the Gospels of Luke and John. Many Historians of ancient times, archaeologists, social historians and observers (Christian or otherwise) accept a very many of the Bible's secular aspects (i.e. people, places, events etc) as being true, if not the spiritual as well, and continue to make new discoveries and compile evidences, The reason such discoveries etc do not make the main newspapers or popular social media is that the consequences are too far reaching for today's culture to cope with. Also there are historians of the day who wrote about people and events during early Christian times e.g. Flavius Josephus, Tacitus, Thallus etc. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe. A deeply touching song, beautifully done.

I love the Harmonies, Very nice singing..,...,
Our Norma!❤
Reminds me of Sacred Harp style singing. Excellent!
hendersonred was just going to say the exact same :)
A version of this song is in fact in the Shenandoah Harmony, a shape note tune book.
I found it in some guy's Sacred Harp playlist. SH is based on old English harmonies, after all.
The name of the piece in the sacred harp texts is "Amboy".
Beautiful song and harmonies
Simple harmonies but great.
Love this version. I have 3 other groups singing it, in MP3.
I rest in a hope

That's one good thing about the covid nonsense: it's forced people to consider their mortality.
And their response has been less than stellar.
Totally agree. A lot of food for thought. So sad to hear of Norma's recent passing also. May she rest in eternal peace. This world has lost a legend.
