John Peel visits Robin Hood's Bay and talks to Martin Carthy, Norma Norma Waterson and their daughter Eliza Carthy. Originally broadcast on Channel 4 (UK) 06/03/1999
Martin Carthy never sold out on his art and for that should be much commended. He was also never afraid to air his opinion on any subject. He would never have made it as a politician! Love all three of 'em.
In 46 years of teaching a singing group I have cancelled exactly once. That was when Martin, Norma, Mike and Eliza came to perform in Berkeley on one of my teaching nights. I am so glad that I cancelled my group. Some of them came and we got to see the last performance that Mike gave in our area. He died a year or two later. Their accapella singing is legendary and Eliza is an accomplished violinist. She is also a fine singer and sounds more and more like Norma who is no longer able to tour. That concert was one of the high points in my life. They have lots of music out in the world and much of it on UA-cam. Enjoy! Oakland CA 2020
Thank you so much for uploading this to UA-cam. This kind of folk documentary is a rare and must be preserved .Can you put the name of the original doc and a link if there is one? Thanks
It’s interesting to hear about the attitudes towards English traditional music in a racial context. I mean obviously that’s because of British colonialism and the extreme tyranny and brutality of this. However, the good people of England and their traditional music should not be blamed for this. It’s all true at the same time.
'Extreme tyranny and brutality'. Blah blah blah. You're just another clueless carrier aren't you. The same as the producers of this programme and dunce John Peel.. For God's sake try and think for yourself instead of repeating the mantras of rancid academic lefty historians with an axe to grind. Norma was a great singer, but she's doing exactly the same. No research or nuance whatsoever, just the usual hyperbolic cliches .

My god, one comment on these majestic performers, legends. What a comment on today's music scene.
people who know real music have immense respect for them, who cares what others think.
What a treat !
A new friend from your reel's i stopped and played
16th century hymn? I'd put that down as 19th.
Any idea what it's called or any info
Lovely, though I wish he'd have not spoken over the singing of the first song.
You can hear them singing in on their first recording. See: ua-cam.com/video/RYwbpCm2apA/v-deo.html

Oh do shut up
Our folk music was hijacked by the middle class
@@mugsboroughpete3534or was it abandoned by the majority of the working class
Getting schooled...
Great socialists Carthy & Waterson sent Eliza to an exclusive fee paying school😅
What an irrelevant mean spirited comment.
Poor old Norma... Obviously never read a history book...
Maybe you should read a book on the history of England whereby the Romans and Norman Elite committed mass genocide on the native population.
