R3 has just played the North Country Maid - I googled it whilst it was playing and have landed HERE!! How happy is this North Country Maid born in 1965!! ❤️❤️❤️
How smug do we all feel here when we know this is the finest folk music anyone has ever heard and we are 1 of only a few thousand viewers i'm not tellin anyone
I love this mournful song, playing as they decamp. in the early 80's, I spent 5 years in a van with an old time band. Wonderful times - better when you look back at them. We would always be hosted by locals. Sometimes together, sometimes apart. We packed in a similar manner - sleeping bags, clothes, instruments... And we had one guy who always did the final check, to see if anything was left behind. We had a much bigger maxi-van, and never once had to hand-crank it! Progress? And some of our best rules - never eat at a restaurant, unless it's recommended by locals. This was especially true for pizza places! And we made sure to sample the local brews and ice cream. We also tried to find something scenic, or touristy, to break up the day's drive, when we had the time. Those were the days, my friend... I've never really heard, or paid attention to the Watersons. Now, I am. But UGH - how everyone smoked back then! I'm proud of how America has stopped smoking. I was so thankful that no one in the group smoked! But they did drink coffee. Something about the aroma was never peasant with me. Getting in the van at 4am, with everyone opening their thermos'... Ack!
Notice the Beatles album in the background at 50 second mark. Kind of dates it also. Still have their Frost & Fire album; mint. They certainly were a benchmark. No one was like them.

Smug as a bug in a rug
A really wonderful song. And interesting to get a glimpse of life when everything was in black and white.
