*LYRICS - The Old Churchyard* ------------ Come, come with me to the old churchyard I so well know those paths beneath the soft green sward Friends slumber there that we want to regard We will trace out their names in the old churchyard Mourn not for them for their trials are o'er And why weep for those who will weep no more? For sweet is their sleep, though cold and hard Their pillows lay deep in the old churchyard I know it seems vain when our friends depart To breathe kind words to a broken heart And I know that the joy of life, it is marred When we follow those friends to the old churchyard But were I at rest beneath yonder tree Oh why would you weep, my friends, for me? I'm so weary and worn, why would you retard The peace that I seek in the old churchyard? Why weep for me, for I'm anxious to go To that haven of rest where no tears ever flow? And I fear not to enter that dark weary tomb Where our Savior has lain and He conquered the gloom I rest in the hope that one bright day Sunshine will burst through these prisons of clay And Old Gabriel's trumpet and the voice of the Lord They will wake up the dead in the old churchyard [x2] Album: Hopefully a future album
I suffer from terrible depression. I know my heart lies to me when it speaks darkness. I know the Truth that Jesus has promised us a future and paid for it dearly, so it costs me nothing. It is hard to see the light in the darkness, though. Thank you for this reminder. The music breaks through. God has used you to bless me. Thank you.
Thinking about the men and brothers that sacrificed everything while listening to this is tough but beautiful at the same time. The words hit the heart cords.
I'm 59 years old traditional man and maybe my increasing age is what sometimes makes me feel the need to go to the kitchen to cut some onions. It's good kinds of onions, and this was one of those occasions. Beautiful presentation. Thank you.
I agree with the earlier comment that the violin sounds like a bagpipe, which gives it a Scottish kind of feel. Well done. I would bet that that train whistle got your hearts either racing or stopped altogether. Love you all!
Just beautiful! I only wish Katie and Ellen switch sides so we can see the playing of the violin and Katie’s face a little better. The train blooper was great. Way to keep the show going Katie! 🚂
The violin first made me think of a Shruti Box, which is used by some folk singers, for example in Scotland. However, the sound of the drones of a set of bagpipes makes a lot of sense, too!
My ex-wife passed away from cancer less than a month ago and I’ve been mourning her loss along with my kids and grandkids. Hearing this song has brought me back to the understanding that she is truly at peace now. Thank you for sharing. God Bless you all.
My best friend passed away last night after a long fight with brain cancer. He was just 34 years old. His wife, 6 months pregnant, and his three little ones were there by his side. Sometime the world can seem cruel and unfair. Here's to hoping for a brighter day.
Cameron, I lost my best friend on the 20th of July 2021. The hurt doesn’t get any less, just a little less often maybe. Hold the fort down for his wife and kids, they’re gonna need you. God bless. I’ll be praying from Maine.
This was hypnotizing, truly. I don't listen to this sort of music typically but it came over my headphones on auto-play while at work and I had to sit down. Beautiful
Wow! The Petersens are bluegrass for the 21st Century. Some old timers may remember The Byrds who in some songs blended folk music and bluegrass; listening to the first few bars of this song reminded me of them a bit, joyfully. Katie's violin playing is outstanding, no studio tricks, just pure three-dimensional sound in open air. God Bless.
Wonderful job. Appropriately somber, yet hopeful. Julianne's voice was excellent for the lead on this, and Katie's violin was the perfect instrument for this, particularly when played brilliantly, as it was. Ellen provided a nice lift as well. Lovely song. Lovely arrangement. I've never seen a graveyard look so good. Bless you for sharing this. One thing to add - I feel that Julianne's voice is maturing steadily. She's holding onto her unique character, but becoming a little smoother and developing a little more range. That's what it looks like to me. It's wonderful watching this family grow.
Julianne's voice is definitely maturing.... but I think the engineering is just. better in these last songs and it brings her voice forward with more strength. Very nice!
Dear Petersens, This was *perfectly stunning*... very moving. Yes, the invoking bagpipe fiddle-droning of Katies powerful accompaniment indeed flows so well. Lyrically the story conveyed is so beautifully 🪻🌹🌲 timelessly classic. Gorgeous to me it is near-showstopping in its utter greatness 🎉 🤯 Cheers and blessings belived clan!!!
Welp, it's been a while since I've been able to say it, and I'm sorry to "Down in the River to Pray" but I officially have a new favorite Petersens song! loved the Celtic sound it had with Katie's fiddle drone in the background, as well as the beautiful solo. I'm also super happy with having Julianne front and center on the mic and Ellen and Katie off to the sides, it certainly helped balance out the differences in the volume each of the girls sings at. I also can't wait for the album version of this so I can blast it in my truck without having to remember to skip at the end to avoid a train horn blowing out my speakers 😂😂 🚂
If you close your eyes while listening, you can imagine yourself to be seated in some old Irish or Scottish tavern, where the locals sing their enchanting melodies.
This reminds me of the day I visited such an old graveyard - and expected it to be gloomy and sad - but I felt a wave of a feeling of freedom and joy... Halleluja ! 🕊️
@@theresap3467...it was a very real, tangible impression - even some kind of blissful music seemed to be in the air there...(-Also, I had not planned to visit, I just walked by its walls and felt a strong pull to go in and then experienced this joyful vision 🌈🎶🌌
Beautiful. As is so often the case, I put on your songs to play in the background of my work and end up focusing entirely on the song instead of the work. What a marvel! God bless you all.
Bransons Best right there. Band, Country Show, Fiddler, Female Vocalist, Gospel Group, Matinee, Singing Group, Family Show... Petersen's are great entertainers!
Much love from Croatia, Europe ❤ Since my dad passed away 4 months ago I've been listening to you every night before sleep. Thanks a lot and so lovely seeing you grow closer and better in music!
Great song, and so was the trumpet at the end! All three sisters were great. Ellen's mannerisms with her hands while she's singing always shows how she always puts her whole soul into it. Katie singing loud and good while the horn was blasting cracked me up. This song was made for Julianne, and the way she sang it during the 3:10-3:20 mark, was beyond great, it was exceptional...
Haunting, yet beautiful and soothing at the same time. Thank you for another great music video. I would like to say something about what the symbolism behind the colors of their beautiful dresses could be. - Green: nature, growth, harmony, earthliness - Red: love, vitality, power, the Holy Spirit - Blue: peace, serenity, trustworthiness, ascension to Heaven And the three are connected. Like family, like... sisters. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it was just a random choice, but I don't think so. The Petersens' videos are always well thought out (that 'trumpet'🚆in the outro wasn't a coincidence either😁).
Katie sings, "I rest in the hope, that one bright day"... as she turns her head you can almost hear her thinking, " we can all surely pray that the train goes away"!!
Their choice of works as well as their original works set to their arrangements, along with their re-arrangements of pieces of exceptional value from other areas of musical endeavors into classic Petersen exemplary masterpieces can bless all the world over time during their slow but inevitable expositional encroachment upon all of us who appreciate music done so enjoyable with their flair and their caring,... usually followed by a little of their Petersen whimsy, such as here with the final verse of the tune sung as interrupted.
Beautifully done ladies, thank you for this. I'm getting older and closer to my time going home. This is a peaceful, soulful reminder of the room that is waiting for me in my Father's house.
What a wonderful, different sound from you. How to make a violin sound like a hurdy gurdy, wow quite incredible it was ! The outtake was such fun too. Thank you for this lovely song.
This is so beautiful and inspirational. A genuinely great job singing by the three lovely Petersen's sisters Julianne, Ellen and Katie, with Julianne in the lead, along with some real magic from Katie's Fiddle! You have to listen to this as it is AMAZING IN EVERY WAY!
Somehow I blame Matt for the train. Seriously ladies, that was so beautiful. So many great treasures among the old folk songs. I love all of the Petersen's Band, but I am always so taken by the sound of the three of you. Whatever the blend of instruments. The glorious sound of your voices blending is simply awesome. Thank you all for the gift of another video. Hope you all are having a great summer. Stay safe and well!
Three beautiful women, three beautiful voices, a beautiful song and the smile that blows away any pain just like that. That felt really good. Thank you🥰
The girl in the red, little miss Julianne has indeed blossomed to be the equal of her older sisters; but the middle sister on the left, the mother of the darling Macy, Ellen likewise is a good and equally beautiful lady; and the eldest violinist and matching in timbre vocalist to her younger sisters, Katie must be included in three remarkable and lovely and talented and impossible to over-praise, all still so young and winsome ladies, singing a macabre, and yet not, song worthy of reflection by all young, middle-aged and older.
Just joyous. Beautifully sung and Katie’s violin playing is spot on. What a wonderful family you guys are. So so glad I got to see you play live here in the UK on your last European tour. ❤
"Old Gabriel's Trumpet" in the credits is a little "over the top"... ;) A wonderful song that you sang magnificently with an "Irish touch". Also wonderful to hear just you three sisters. Katie, I admire how you can sing to the violin, and then without the intonation suffering. The "flat" note at the end of the fiddle solo is surprising, but great! Thank you!

Thanks, Liz!
Thank you for posting the lyrics! Such a wonderful song.
Thanks Liz!!!

@@josegenaroriveraloanzon Liz, can you tell us who wrote this song? It sounds Scots to me.

That ending in the outtake… Gabriel’s trumpet blowing!!
Smiling, crying. I have loved this song for years…this is my new favorite version!
It's always a nice day when the Petersens post a new performance.
Thinking about the men and brothers that sacrificed everything while listening to this is tough but beautiful at the same time. The words hit the heart cords.
Thank you!! So glad you enjoy it!

I'm only a year ahead of you, and it had the same affect on me........ dang allergies...lol
Nothing wrong with a good Ole cry...and some onions!
Is there room for one more in the boat?
58 old school truck driver, firefighter here, you're spot on. 😪
Enjoyed that
So powerful a performance, with so little ornamentation. Just exceptional.
I agree with the earlier comment that the violin sounds like a bagpipe, which gives it a Scottish kind of feel. Well done. I would bet that that train whistle got your hearts either racing or stopped altogether. Love you all!
Well it’s because she’s creating a drone.

So beautiful! Katy's fiddle sublimely recreates the tones from bag-pipes. Amazing.
I was just thinking it reminds me of Irish music.
OK, Irish Bagpipes

Katie is able to create the drone of a bagpipe with her fiddle. She is amazing! They're all amazing!
Yeah, spot on. But this time the Bagpipes are actually playing a tune.
Her violin is so much better than bagpipes!
Q: What is the difference between bagpipes and onions?
A: Nobody cries when they cut up some bagpipes.
Yes they are
Hoi - more respect for bagpipes please. Cannae beat the skirl o the pipes😀😀👍🏴🏴🇬🇧
Playing an open string drone is actually not at all what is difficult in her part.
Uniquely perfect as only the Petersen ladies could perform. Thanks
