    People who get into "van life" because they were charmed by Instagram pictures may not like it. Campers who used to hike and then camp in a tent with minimal comfort and switched to vans are likely to appreciate the upgrade. I was on camping trips for months at a time when I was young and really envied the older people able to afford a camper van.

      This is such a great comment and we totally agreed. Although we saw so many van lifers with luxury looking vans, we were more interested on where the van could take us on a budget. We also get great sleep in our van so there is nothing more we could ask for!

    I work in Walmart. About 3 1/2 years ago a couple arrived in a van. The guy told me that he and his girlfriend/wife had drove from Washington State and were on their way to the Florida Keys. They were pretty close to their goal (about an hour away from the Walmart I work at)but they were both tired. He asked where he could park. I directed him to another side of the parking lot and let him know that no one, not even the police will bother them as long as they leave the next day.
    As long as one has a new vehicle for this lifestyle, it can be good. An older vehicle is risky, in my humble opinion. It’s probably more expensive than expected.

      I'm a full timer and can honestly say if you go into the nomad life properly, shedding modern comforts and learning to live a simple life, it can be amazing. You have to forgo many comforts but learn to find comforts in the simpler things. Like a bite of chocolate after nothing but beans, rice and foraged mushrooms for 2 week. Or finding a clean river to bathe in instead of washing over an enamel bowl.
      The whole Instagram, UA-cam van life romanticism is ruining the lifestyle choice. Over here in the UK, we are having issues with new "van lifers" leaving waste everywhere and generally just being a pain in the arse. Sitting in a recliner, beer in one hand and remote in the other has its attractions, no doubt. Been there ,done that and off to work tomorrow. Now I'm free as a bird. Just spent 7 days at Lake Havasu, then 10 days outside Sedona. Last night Flagstaff and today it was the Petrified Forest Nat Park's turn .In two days I'll be in Albuquerque. Van life? People have been doing this with all sorts of vehicles for how many years? Hilarious listening to young people while they reinvent the wheel. It's a given, when you live outside the comforts of a real home, you have to be much more resourceful, frugal and compromising. I would bet most of these kids were raised in middle class or affluent environments and were fortunate enough to never experience real poverty, deprivation or hunger.

    • @Rafungilo
      @Rafungilo 3 роки тому +2

      I mean I see more successful van life attempts than unsuccessful. Perhaps my search is bias. Your logic is a little flawed, assuming your over 40, your generation reinvented the wheel all the same. You can go as far back as traveling caravans…. People improve and modify old ideas to create. I’m 27, I’ve worked on fishing boats, landscaping, I’ve made pizza for a living, and I’m currently working on my third year as an electrician. Annddd there are plenty more young people like me. It’s been my experience that we are less proud about it. It’s just work, we expect to work… it was previous generations that started this economic snowball shitstorm, previous generations that ruined the environment without any consideration for long term effects… previous generations that feel entitled to the property that they inherited but somehow “worked their ass off” for…. My generation dealt with your bankrupt ass not being to provide shit, nothing to inherit because you gave it to the bank. So I live simply and humbly enjoy the good things in life, meeting new people, trying new foods, and absorbing the atmosphere in the most rural places I can find. I bet you would bitch and moan just like this trust fund baby minority group.

The only thing I thought you should consider talking more about is the intimacy issues of living so close together. I will assume both couples got along well with each other. If that is true, try to express it during some of the experiences and especially at the end. End the last comparison with at least each couple giving each other a big long hug.....then wave goodbye!

Now I know yours was just a trip but peeing all over the parking lot at Walmart is a bit nasty especially during a pandemic. Although I understand why .. u gotta go you gotta go.. but if you are embarrassed to do it you prob should find a gas station. Usually casinos will let you park for free and gas stations are usually near by. Also porto potties are easy to lug around. All I’m saying is consider the people who shop there.. other than that cute video and valid points!

    Another thing about mosquitos, avoid standing water. Like drainage ditches in shopping centers will have a higher amount of mosquitoes than the rest of the parking lot b/c that water no matter what the water is standing in becomes a mosquito breeding ground. Thank God they die in the winter because they can't survive cold weather. If you see anything taking on water at a campsite dump the water out and the mosquitos will leave. (amount of time depends on them, the wind etc.) They lay their eggs in standing water.

    are you kidding?! Rain on a tin roof is one of the best sounds in the world. It's right up there with breaking waves and wind through pine trees.

    So, rain problem...
    On our trip with even smaller car, we have used cheap garden/utility tarpaulin ( like 9.99 EUR thing) to cover most of the car, including roof box. It works like tent flysheet, isolating rain, or direct sun from the car body. I have used suction cups with hooks to mount it to the car. So, safe journey!

    Thank you for these honest comments on van life. Since more people are trying this life, honesty and useful advice is VERY important. I wonder if spaces, other than large parking lots, can be rented to vans per vans parked, at a reasonable rate. This would be an excellent way for landowners to make extra money on empty land.

      up here in NH / ME there was some news about the politicians were going to make it easier for homeowners to build a tiny home or two on their properties to address affordable housing / incomes.
      IT's amazing how UN-free America is.
