I was never a big fan of the Fame song,... but “Out Here On My Own” always demands 3-4 replays when it comes up on my playlist. The song just hits me deep.
This was from the Academy Awards of 1981 and was the first time that two songs from the same movie were nominated fro Best Original Song:'Fame" and "Out Here on My Own" Fame won. Irene would win again a few years later for "Flashdance What A Feeling" which she sang and wrote the lyrics to.
If anything this clip shows how different the Oscars are now. They don’t tend to do these big showy performances for Best Original Song nominees anymore but then again most film songs nowadays are forgettable. Back then they were iconic hits on the radio too. Not now.
You almost forget how beautiful Irene Cara was and what a great voice she had. She was an excellent actress. It really is a mystery why she didn’t gain greater fame (no pun intended)
She was in the movie of the same name "Fame", which was a popular movie for a lot of young people. She wasn't in the TV show, though. She had another big hit with "What A Feeling" the theme song from the movie Flash Dance. I remember other songs she had like "Breakdancing" and "Why Me". "What a Feeling" is my favorite. But I really liked the Flashdance sound tract when I was young.
Right On! If anything it was the "Original" Glee. So much talent came from the real life HSPA (High School Performing Arts). The Alumni have been Ben Vereen, Freddie Prinze, Irene Cara herself, McCauly Culkin and his Former Wife Rachel Miner who in the 1990's played Michelle Bauer #2 overall on Guiding Light. The Graduates have done Broadway, Movies & TV Shows who are now legends.
@@nickimontie I listened to it over and over and I had never seen the movie until years later. In those days there was no VHS for us and living in a small town with a theater that had two screen, we didn't get much movies. Granted "Porky's" stayed at the theater for weeks.
@@bangmon1000 oh wow! What did you think when you finally got to see it? I had the VHS and the cassette, and wore both out! Thankfully, DVDs and CDs don't wear out or I'd be in trouble. I also had the Flashdance movie poster hanging in my room until it finally fell apart.
@@nickimontie I think I listen to the soundtrack so much that I built the movie up in my imagination. And when I saw it I was kind of disappointed. I also think that the movie influenced a lot of 80's styles.
I watch the movie Fame many times. As a matter of fact Irene Cara Escalara always was and always will be my favorite singer, songwriter, musician, professional dancer and actress.
Irene Cara also sang and co-wrote "Flashdance... What a Feeling" (from the movie Flashdance). She won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance the song in 1984
Rip To Actress & Singer Irene Cara Escabera aka Coco from the original Fame Movie!!! My Condolences & Sympathies Go To The Escabera Fam. A New Yorker that made her Cuban/Puerto Rico Pride to the top. Thank U Irene!!! U Will Be Missed But, Ur Music Will Continue To Move On For A Long Time. God Bless The Escabera Fam!!!
Fame was an iconic Tv show .. About a stage school/college in New york. The cast and the music kept me happy in the early eighties. But Irene Cara's amazing vocals made it even better. I'd recommend you listening to the Fame tv shows music and Irene's other film tracks as they are fantastic and up beat.
Hi India. Have you ever listen to the AMAZING voice of (Dame) SHIRLEY BASSEY. (A Dame in the UK is the female equivalent to a Knighood). I recommend her singing NEVER NEVER NEVER.
The song 'Fame' is from the movie Fame and she starred in that movie which was very successful and then there was the Fame TV series. Irene Cara has been a working performer for decades but it seems she didn't have the fame that many well known singers have had over the many years. I thinks she is a fantastic singer and I still would like to see more of her.
She sued her record company. She had the number one record in the world (Flashdance) and wasn’t receiving her fair share of the royalties. Agreements between Coury and Paramount in 1983 for Cara's appearance in 'Flashdance' and with Universal the same year for her role in 'D.C. Cab' were designed to benefit Coury and did not give Cara her fair share of profits. After she filed the lawsuit Al Coury began to spread lies about her being difficult to work with. Irene won the lawsuit and all rights to her recordings.
Out here on my own, one of the the Best Songs ever. Hear „ Is it okay if i call you mine“ from Fame. Out here... was Later a Hit for Nikka Costa. Co written by Lesley Gore (It‘s my Party).
Irene had some of the most memorable song from the 80's. Like Flashdance and many other. You should react them. (Cut them up with with commentary to avoid the copy block).
Fame the TV series aired on what became the Fox network. A young Janet Jackson appeared in it. It was very popular. Some of the actors from the movie cast played their roles on the series but not Coco, Cara’s character was played by a different actress. I remember being more familiar with the tv show than the movie which I didn’t see cuz I was only 10 but in 81-83 I was in dance school and at one of our year recitals one group of girls (adolescents/tweens) did a performance to a song that I now realize was Hot Lunch from the movie We we’re spoiled for dance movies in the early 80s (emphasis on early)
Wow, I never heard this medley although I love the original Fame soundtrack. What an amazing talent Irene Cara was - such perfect vocal power and control! Thank you!
You should seriously watch the movie "Fame," where the song "Fame" came from. Irene Cara was one of the stars, playing a high school girl named Coco. The movie was (loosely) based on the real-life High School for the Performing Arts in New York City, a magnet school. It followed a group of students from auditions through all four years and up to graduation. It's great, and the sound track is amazing. :)
As others have stated, she also starred in the movie of the same name. She did a throwback concert a few years back and STILL looks beautiful after almost 40 years.
Great voice and I believe the song Out Here on my Own was recorded live in this scene. I may be wrong but I thing it was. And you need to do the studio version of Fame.
👍 Fame was a show on tv about kids life at an Arts school(dance, theater & music) in the late 70's early 80's Check out Irene Cara's youtube channel she has the original videos from it👍 and many others she sang from movie Flashdance👍
Dana says- Irene Cara was not only a very talented singer, but if you watch her in the movie 'Fame' who's soundtrack these two songs is from, you can see how good an actress and dancer she was too. I went to a school of the arts that opened shortly after the television version of 'Fame' came out, and the movie is set in such a school in New York. Can't tell you how many times people asked me if we randomly broke out into singing and dancing in the cafeteria and halls.
Wow. This brings me back. My Father took me to the movies to see "Fame" when it was out; we lived in Brooklyn and he wanted me to try out for the Arts High School in Manhattan that this movie was based on. I didn't do it; one of my biggest regrets. This song (radio version) was huge.
I remember when this movie first came out in 1980. These are 2 great songs by Irene Cara that were combined for a terrific medley in an outstanding performance. You also need to try "What A feeling" from the 1983 movie Flashdance. That's another great Irene Cara song.
These were great songs and they bring back so many memories, but to get a true reaction you have to hear them from the soundtrack from the movie Fame or you can get the clips from UA-cam.
This is a combination of 2 songs from the 1980's movie, Fame, starring Irene Cara. Take some time and watch videos of the songs in the movie to feel how powerful those songs are. Irene Cara is also known for Flashdance.
The song "Fame" was so iconic. I'd love for you to hear it in its original format. As for the movie, I think you'd love it too.
I like the original wayyyy better
The one with Debbie Allen, when she said, "If you want fame, right is where you start pain"
Agreed. The original video... Its fantastic.
Rest in paradise, beautiful, talented Irene Cara.😢💔😞 Thank you for your amazing work that created our childhood soundtrack. 💫 🙏 🕊️
I was never a big fan of the Fame song,... but “Out Here On My Own” always demands 3-4 replays when it comes up on my playlist. The song just hits me deep.
Mariah Carey’s cover is pretty nice
Gotta make it a three-fer and toss in "What a Feeling" from the "Flashdance" soundtrack.
Yes! That is a Great one as well.

Us 50 plus crowd who were in the theater’s back when this opened were blown away in her role as Coco and talent...
She brought it in this oscars performance. And all live. She can teach a thing or two to these so called singers from now. 👑🙌
RIP beautiful Irene Cara, we will always remember your name! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💐💐💐💔💔💔🎤🎤🎤
Irene is fantastic. SO underrated
Her voice is phenomenal. You have to watch the movie Fame now!
Such an amazing talent & beautiful woman..She will be greatly missed 😢❤
I think those performances were live stage performances from the Oscars (or the Grammys) back in the early 1980s.
This was from the Oscars. It was the first time that two songs from the same film were nominated..
@@jwsel - Yep...I thought so.

Heaven has another truly talented angel, R.I.P. Ms Cara. 😪✌️❤️
I always loved these 2 songs. She has a beautiful voice. Pronounced Care- uh.
Ugh this song always makes me tear up!
The song “on my own” makes me tear up

I saw “Fame” when it was first released in the summer of ‘80. It was intense that summer.
RIP beautiful Irene.
The original song was even better. The movie and series were great also.
Omg you HAVE to watch the movie Fame now. Viva La Irene Cara forever
RIP, Irene Cara. 😭
Rest in peace, Irene 🙏😔
How I love this gorgeous Latina princess💙💙💙
Out Here On My Own is one of my fav songs.
Just bought Fame OST (after long time wanting to) and Kids From Fame OST (tv show) and we have the reaction, nice.
Irene Cara won a Grammy and Oscar when she was 19 for the song Flashdance, What A Feeling that she wrote and sang. Please review ?
RIP my dear, time for folks to hear “Anyone can see”
Just an incredible voice. I loved the movie - lots of good music there, and a very intense story.
A very beautiful recording from the series fame
was the "kids from fame" is called "starmaker"
Beautiful songs beautiful reacction 💪
I still can't believe she is gone..... 😢 It doesn't seam real...
Goosebumps all over. My body.
Love the way she bookended Out Here On My Own with Fame. Very cool. 🙂
Out here on my own! A Shame that this Song doesn’t Hit the Charts Worldwide. Only with the little Nikka Costa Version!

Fame wasn't just a movie, it was also a tv series
The movie Fame was great. Loved the TV show too. Janet Jackson was a cast member. I liked Irene Cara.
These Songs and The Movie are wat I grew up on. I listen to the Soundtrack at least once a month.

She wrote those songs. Amazing. There's a movie named Fame. O.d but great stuff.
Irene didn’t write either song. Michael Gore wrote the songs and his sister Lesley Gore wrote the lyrics to Out Here On My Own
What a beauty!
“On the Radio” and “Flashdance (What a Feeling)”
STRIP, STRIP, STRIP
Get your legs out.
She is always a number one Broadway dancer for me, the singing and acting is incidental
I still love this song the movie and the series too
Irene Cara filmed a performance of Fame for the BBC's Top Of The Pops programme, when it hit number one in the UK in 1982.
