Irene Cara was the full package, absolutely gorgeous, people who worked for her said she was a lovely person to work for, and so talented, truly a gift from Heaven. Sadly she's in Heaven now, a great loss to all of us left behind.
Yes, that's her!! Our dear Coco Hernandez, forever!! She won two awards for two songs on this movie, Fame and Out Here On My Own Epic singer, amazing actress, amazing dancer, amazing musician. R.I.P. Irene, we WILL forever remember your name.
Yes, that is Irene Cara both singing the song and starring in the movie. The movie "Fame" is what made her a star. As far as your assessment of the style of the song "Fame", yes it has disco vibes. Fame was filmed in the late 70s and was released in 1980. During this period pop music was still desperately hanging onto the disco sound but was rapidly being over taken by the electronic dance music, new wave and modern/glam rock that would dominate the 80s. As a side note look at the cast of the movie that is highlighted in this music video...but yet we are expected to believe that "diversity" in film only happened in "current year".
Fame is actually a great movie, regardless if you’re into the performing arts or not. The screenplay was Oscar nominated, (and of course the music had a clean sweep at the Oscars - Irene Cara beating her other nominated song from the movie). You won’t be disappointed. And as I always say, it is an essential watch for anyone remotely interested in the 80s. It permeated everything for at least the first half of the 80s.
I was a Freshman in high school in 1980 when "Fame' came out and a Senior in 1983 when "Flashdance" came out. Love both of them! RIP Irene Cara and Tina Turner-two legends from my teen years gone too soon. 😢
Yes the beautiful Irene in it. Love her! Love her voice. Yes her words will live on forever even after her passing. RIP beautiful Irene. She is in Heaven.
Fame was also a tv show that stared Debbie Allen once again as the dance teacher, back in the eighties. They tried to bring the show back in the 2000's with new students, but it didn't last. Debbie acted, danced, and sang on the show, and eventually directed. The original tv show was so beloved, that it brought world tours of the fame cast performing numbers from the tv show. Some of those concerts can be found on UA-cam, as well as their reunions.
All true. It also featured the acting debut of a young Janet Jackson: She played a freshman who fell in love with Leroy, unrequited if you can believe it.
@@monsieur-ministre Actually Janet had her debut on the tv show Good Times as an abused then adopted child( season 5), then the tv show Different Strokes as the love interest of the oldest orphaned brother Willis(season 3), then came Fame(season 4). She was excellent in all three roles. Good Times is available on several streaming apps, as is Different Strokes and Fame.
@@klb9142 Ah, there you go. Forgot about that. Yeah, I actually think she’s an excellent actress, and could probably have done very well in a full fledged acting career, if she had wanted to. Then again, she did fairly well in music too, so… ;)
I loved both the movie and the tv show based off the movie! I watched them religiously. They all were such intriguing characters, especially the dancer Leroy. Yes, Irene Cara was in the movie Fame, but not the show.
I cried when I heard this song on the day she passed because I realized she fulfilled the goals set down in the lyrics; a thing many wish but few do. R.I.P Irene.
Debbie Allen had a tiny part in the movie Fame (but she did have that iconic one-word line). She more than made up for it by being the lead in the TV show that followed, as well as being its choreographer.
I was a kid in grade school when this came out. I became a theater major for many reasons.......but many grew from this movie. My friends in college called me COCO..........certainly not always in a positive light. But I wear the badge with pride and honor.
After writing a book on Irene Cara's life I discovered some important trivia information about Fame. "Remember, remember, remember" was an idea that Luther Vandross came up with as they were creating the title song. It was Irene who knew all the "badass" singers since she had worked with them all. She brought in Luther and of course he knew even more singers as well. Irene's "fame" would have never happened had she not made so many friends in the music industry and brought them in to help make such powerful music. If you are not aware of songs like "We are the World" or "Do They Know it's Christmas?" then you should start your journey listening to music that was made to heal the world. And we are definitely in need of some music that can do that these days...
You are correct, the film was shot during the summer of 1979 and released in 1980. The song "Fame" is a perfect mix of Broadway, Disco and Rock which makes sense. Tidbit: Luther Vandross was a backing singer on this track. The "remember, remember, remember" was his idea.
Brit, you should listen to Irene Cara singing Out here on my own, so you can hear her full range. Also from Fame. Loved the show more than the movie though, but I was only 9 when the movie came out 😅
When I was a kid watching the TV show..Bruno was my favorite character. I love his synth playing. I'm a musician, a former Session player in Vancouver BC. I wanted to go to that school. Inspired the crap out of me and I never missed an episode. Leroy was my second favorite character because he was talented and also rebellious.
That is her! She has these short bangs in the movie. She was very young in these 2 early 1980s movies! Just barely out of her teens then. You'll love these movies, both preaching the lie that if you work hard enough, you can achieve anything you want. Though Fame does explore many of the pitfalls for aspiring teen, too. And their naivite, as you mention. Flashdance is more of a fairy tale presented as an extended music video, like the then new MTV and TV's Miami Vice were also: plot, character development, and dialog totally subordinated to flashy dance, glamor, coolness among the beautiful and talented.
This was a great 🍿🎥 film....love it!! You can still watch anytime, never to late sweetie!! You love this older gen music, so you'd love the older movie's as well!!
