Duel Protagonist have become my favourite trend Honestly
    Peter and Miles
    Arthur and John
    Kiryu and Ichiban
    Vincent and Leo
    Resident Evil 5 and 6
    Chris and Sheva
    Leon and Helena
    Chris and Piers
    Jake and Sherry
All these characters play off each other well and give a pretty unique experience, I really hope after the remake of Resident Evil 5 we see a rise of coop and duel protagonists games again.

i think the tlou2 wouldve benefited from beginning playing as abby between her fathers death and up until the confrontation with joel shifting to ellie to see the outcome. it wouldve given the player a much more conflicted feeling and fleshed out abbys motivations more making her less easy to hate as a protagonist. it also establishes the idea there is no 'right side' to be on with regards to abby and ellie as both of their actions are morally wrong but a response to what happens to the people around them.

    • @kjh4496
      @kjh4496 7 місяців тому +1

I think they wanted it to be much like real life where actions have consequences and you never know when it will come back around.
It’s not the best method of subversion in my opinion. Maybe the “in medias res” approach could have been a better choice to lead to that moment.

Yeah that would’ve worked much better. Think Naughty Dog just seriously overestimated their ability to make a new likable character, so much so that they thought they could shoot themselves in the foot and still pull it off.

Devil May Cry 5 letting the player see other players as the other characters through the cameo system is pretty neat, especially in the rare instances where players converge in one level (ignore how V is in the game and makes it not a dual protagonist game)

I remember when I was a kid I played the PS3 game Folklore and I was like :0?!? As half of the story is told through one character’s eyes and the other half is through the other character. The game will let you choose which character’s chapter you play next after beat the previous chapter but the game does suggest that you play them alternating one chapter at a time. It’s phenomenal and the reveal at the end is so well done as you piece together the clues in both storylines as you go on.

Tlou2 should’ve been two games and the first should be Abby being a member of Jackson who befriends Ellie and Joel, only to at the end of the second game find out Joel is the killer of her father-from Ellie who just finds out. Then the third game can go kind of as it went and it would’ve been so much better recieved. I find myself typically disliking duel protagonists. I mean, if I'm enjoying a game, I'll go along with whatever it throws at me, but I find myself becoming almost possessive of the player character as I progress through an experience, particularly when my mechanical progression is tied to them. But again, I'm open to anything! TLOU2 is a perfect example of a game nailing the execution.

Dual protagonist can work if they actually tell you something about that protangist. In last of us part 2 we the player already know Ellie so her side is already strong cause we know who she is and what she stands for. Abby on the other hand is wasted not only do we play as her for 10 hours we know next to nothing about her and is somehow meant to care about her. Maybe if Abby was not only played first, got to see her reaction to all her friends dying real time, the flashbacks actually gave a f about her friends that wasnt owen, get too chose who you play as in the theater boss fight and the end of the game given the choice between sparing and killing her despite the weak writing the fans wouldnt have been so pissed playing it. Its still a video game it wouldnt be so hard tl have two endings and having the spare abby ending to be the definitive ending. Spiderman 2 also had the same problem however unlike Abby Miles is an establish character so even if he doesnt have much weight in thr story we know who he is and can have fun playing as him plus insomniac added changes to his powers

Removing the zapping system is basically my only qualm with RE2 remake. But as is, it's the best use of dual protagonists of these examples. Two, full complete campaigns. Alan Wake 2 is too convoluted, TLOU 2 created pacing problems, in Spider-Man 2, let's be real, Peter's story was more important, and Miles felt like a sidekick with nothing to do, and for GoW Ragnarok, claiming Atreus' few playable sections counts him as a dual protagonist with Kratos is kind of a stretch. I would have be interested to hear about the twins in Assassin's Creed Syndicate, how Dishonored handled it, or even Detroit Become Human, which stars 3 protagonists.
Anyway, I can surely see Horizon splitting time between Aloy and Seika

If done well its can be very interesting if not then one character gets sidelined. AC Origins is the worst example of this since Aya is the most interesting of the characters with far more history in the series but you can't play her in the open world.

I dont agree with what you said about the pacing in TLOU2. I felt the same at first, but after some time I really let myself go and enjoy abby’s section. In fact more than Ellie because I did not side with ellie at all. Revenge was not the solution. And abby’s arch and gameplay situations were really impressive. For me abby was what catapulted TLOU2 to a masterpiece level. And if you played episodes like you said you would forget many details. In fact in my second playthrough I discovered more and more nuances. UA-cam and the sexist gamers community can rot. The game is a 10 and its gameplay, length and story and message is the best ps4 game. Now ps5 too.

It makes me feel embarrased to be a gamer. You see how boring and dumb the new god of wars are compared to the originals? But you see, as it is “straight”, normative, and has no risk at all no one blinks an eye. Most Gamers are dumb like the new gow. Just because it doesn't do anything wildly out there like killing it's main character in the first hour in its story doesn't mean it's dumb or boring. Also you consider "God of War" straight normative when other demographics can get stuff out of it too. Kratos is Daddy to me as a gay man after all.

I personally hate dual protagonist games. Only Ragnarok and original RE2 is a good example of dual protagonist games in that list imo. Especially bad for games with RPG mechanics that wants you to commit to a build. People hated Aya sections in AC Origins because of that for example. You were taken out of your Bayek build and forced to play as a character with set build. Not only it takes you out of the game from a gameplay perspective but also takes you out of story, Alan's story is connected to Saga's for example but they don't overlap(heh) besides overlaps and ending.

While I agree that the pacing for TLOU2 was bad ...what really made me hate the game was the way you, the player, were treated as stupid. Like you couldn't get what the game was trying to tell you if they didn't consistently spell it out for you. And then repeat it.
And if course the way every single story beat was soooo predictable, that actually playing through it, to get to the "big reveals" or "emotional scenes" was utterly boring, followed by every line of dialogue ALSO being predictable...ugh
They also really didn't know what to do with Ellie (+ friends), having her parts of the game severely lacking in growth and depth, while Abby's part only becomes interesting when she's with Lev...aka when it copies the first game...
Add to that their marketing of the combat system, which turned out to be one of the most boring and most predictable things ever...and I really don't see how anyone can think this game was anything but a lackluster cash grap

@@daxmichael6855 The issue is that a lot of the game changes because they activists feel the need to push their message.
Alan Wake 2 - Race-swapped Saga and made into the main character putting Alan Wake to the bench in his own game. A bit of a change would have been good, but I am almost certain it wouldn't have been to this extent without going woke. And of course, Saga has that beautiful, poetic "I hate white assholes" line.
Spiderman 2 - Same thing, Spiderman got sidelined completely. Bonus progressive points - Make MJ look "realistic" (-ly ugly)
The Last of Us - Make everyone lame and gay (and have you control them) while telling a pretty generic story.
God of War Ragnarok - Haven't played it, heard a famous Nordic mythology character is apparently black now - thanks Sweet Baby Inc.
This transfers to TV too - Geralt sidelined in his own show by girl bosses, making Galadriel into a (extremely unlikeable) warrior princess just so she can be the protagonist etc.
