  • On September 26th, 2009, over 300 spectators were treated to a recreation of the 1958 endurance racing season with an Aston-Martin DBR1 and Ferrari TR250 "Testa Rossa" at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia.
Both of these cars are very special. The Ferrari is one of only 19 TR 250 "pontoon" fendered cars built. This car, #0710, was the very first "customer" car and was used at the press introduction and in the sales catalog. It was sold to John von Nuemann, the West Coast Ferrari distributor, and was raced at Sebring in 1958 by von Neumann and Ritchie Ginther. Later it was raced extensively on the West Coast by several drivers, including von Neumann's step daughter, Josie.
The Aston-Martin has an equally interesting history. It is serial number DBR1/3, one of four ever built. It won the 1958 Nurburgring 1000 km at the hands of Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham. Moss drove it at other races in the 1958-59 season and then it was sold to the Scottish racing team, Border Reivers. The car raced at Le Mans in both 1960 and 1961, driven by racing great Jim Clark.
Please enjoy this video and come visit the Simeone Museum in Philadelphia for one of our Demonstration Days. There are few, if any, other places in the world you can see cars like these run on a regular basis.

Two of (in my opinion) the most beautiful cars EVER built. Simply a treat to see they're being kept alive and DRIVEN.

Both cars are classics and lookers, but for me the DBR1 has an edge on beauty.

Have just been at the museum. It is a MUST if you are into classic cars, i cant recommend it enough !! One of the mechanics gave me (and my girlfriend) a small guided tour on some of the car in the exhibition and in the workshop(Ferrari, Bizzarrini Auburn, Mercedes, Lancia, Triumph 250, Talbot, Bugatti type 35) . A-mazing, enthusiast to enthusiast. My greatest thanks to Dr. Simeone !! Greetings from denmark

Remarkable cars. I own an aston (MK III, '58), and have always felt that ferrari mostly had it all when it came to building the best sports cars, but this is one of the rare moments when a british car outdoes them in styling, engineering, and SOUND! The DBR1 is one of the few automobiles i dream to own, like a lambo muira, ford GT40, shelby mustang, bizzarini GT, ferrari GTO, facel vega II, E type jag series 1 or D type, and an aston martin DB MK III...so i guess one out of ten ain't so bad :)

I saw the 250 race at Laguna Seca in 1962. No other car on the track could match the insanely beautiful sound of that v-12 redlining in every gear. Every other ride on the track sounded like a motorboat or dump truck compared the melodious whine of the 250! Ignore this sickly putt around the parking lot. At full race you could watch this car with your eyes closed and not miss anything important. The exhaust pipes did a full narration!

If I had had a choice of getting one of the two, I have no idea which one I would choose. I love the style of the 250 TR but the sound of the aston is maybe the best i've ever heard. That aston is AMAZING.

Its sad that people today will never see these beautiful cars in their true state. Flying at top speed in places like Le Mans or Nurburgring. Cars today don't have that true beauty or amazing lines of the body. Not to metion that classic smell of leather and gas through multiple carburetors. I was born in the worng end of this century. Most of us missed the golden years of cars and racing of these amazing machines with character and soul. If you lived in that era i envy you.

I know, that as a car nut, I'm contractually obliged to adore the Ferrari V12 sound, and I do... But that straight six in the Aston... It just piques it, for me.

Simeone appears to be having a great time! I've only seen the pre-war cars run there - like WW1. The Stutz and Bentlys are great to see, but these late 50's cars are FAST. Taruffi complained that he had too much wheelspin in the Ferrari at 125mph. Tires have come a long way since then.

@gumby1008 I believe you can chuck whatever motor into any replica, it's your car. sure it's not gonna make Ferrari music but it will be just as fast and look just as good.

Yep, I would take the DBR1 over that TR250. Looks like the Ferrari had more body roll due to its higher ride height than the Aston.

The Aston information is not quite correct. There were Five DBR1s built, not Four, and all of them remain in existence. Numbers; 1, 2, 4 and 5 are still actively campaigned at major events in the UK, particularly Goodwood and Silverstone Classic. DBR1/2 won Le Mans outright in 1959 (Salvadori/Shelby) and the year culminated with Aston Martin beating Ferrari and Porsche to win the Sportscar World Championship. This car, DBR1/3, also led the 1959 Le Mans race, driven by the great Sir Stirling Moss

@gumby1008 No satnav, cd player, usb-ipod intergration, cassette player, ac, no modern anything makes cars like these pure and genuine. The era that the auto companies focused on driving and cared not for creature comforts. The 250 TR shown is a reproduction as they can't afford the $12.5 Mil to buy one!

  • @gumby1008

@him89 that would sound terrible, if you ever get close to these sorts of cars you will realise what i mean, its both the choppy sound and the smell. You are only permitted to chuck a crate motor in a gt40 replica, cobra replica or something similar.

    Too fast for the road!~
This car is so baddass it was raced by a late friend of mine Josie von Neumann, mentioned here (an early female race car driver) Her family's business sold James Dean his infamous Spyder, they warned him about it's speed.

I have a photo of (it?) at Santa Barbara SCCA road races, taken Memorial Day Weekend 1964. I raced there with the AFM, motorcycle racers. SCCA would race morning and afternoon, and we would race in between maybe around noontime.
