- Watch more from Richard Hammond's Workshop: bit.ly/Hammond...
It was inevitable that one day James would venture to Hereford to check out The Smallest Cog, Richard Hammond's new classic car restoration workshop. And of course, he immediately set about roasting every aspect of Hammond's pride and joy.
Thanks to discovery+ for sponsoring this video!

Is there more than 8 episodes? Or however short the run was?
Trust and believe we Americans take pride in our tools. Provided your not the Uncle Leroy type who apparently knows everything about.... everything. Every country has them lol
This link doesn't work. I'm not sure we get this content in the US.
Yeah. Not available in the US . Yer killing us, DT.
I would like to... but it's not found.
They call James boring but I must admit, he is everything I aim to be in life. Intelligent, well traveled, courteous, patient. If I had a fraction of his knowledge and skillset I just might make something of myself.
Hear, hear! If I ever get to the point of life where he is right now, I can only hope to be like him.
Maybe it's just me but I like James May's very down to earth sense of humour. Boring he is not.
James May is the most interesting boring man in the world.
On blood💯
Sadly ... he is a bit of a communist ... when you look at the interior of his pub ... all "modern and plastic" ... when a pub should be "old and wooden".
"Destroying the past/culture" is not something I would have expected from him ...
The banter between these 3 is representative of every great friendship any of us have ever had. Far from unique but equally special and to see it evolving on tv for years is a rarity.
@Paul he was probably being sarcastic
@Paul Not that it really matters if they are friends or not but in the interview you're referencing James May actually just says they're not best or close friends.
"Some people think we live in a big house together with our cars parked outside. But that’s nonsense. We don’t really hang out with each other."
"We don’t speak or text on a weekly basis because we don’t need to."
“There are people that you like arguing with and like having them there for the purposes of interaction and debate and stimulation, it’s that rather than, ‘Let's go for a pint together and play Dominos’.
“I like seeing the other two because they wind me up.”
“There is a rapport obviously, it wouldn’t work if you didn’t have that.
“But, we’re not friends as in you're friends with your old school mates, your gang you’ve grown up with for many years.”
Especially for 20 years!
As pairs they have differing grievances about the third. Clarkson and Hammond gang up on May because they think he's boring and old-fashioned whereas Clarkson and May gang up on Hammond because they think he's uncultured and crashes too often. Hammond and May gang up on Clarkson because he's obsessed with power and going fast and because he doesn't think before he acts. Clarkson knew May prior to the Top Gear 2002 revival, then worked with Hammond for a full season before May joined the revived show in series 2. Hammond and May's friendship would've developed somewhat during the car vs race segments, especially as a result of having to deal with with Clarkson's gloating.
This is the reason why the current top gear doesnt work because there is no friendship or chemistry between the presenters.
This should absolutely be a thing!
James going places, checking them out and giving his opinion 😂 I'd watch that

Is the best and most genuine James May roast in this vid. Hilarious and perfect delivery.
What I love about James is that he thinks about things like is the dog allowed out or is this room dust free.
Indeed. You mean like Harry Metcalfe worrying whether his neighbours are upset by the noise of him getting mud on his Bentley Bentayga.
Wouldn't it be nice
If everyone was so considerate.. I mean where do people learn to be nice and considerate?
@@robi4387 its embedded in your soul. One just needs to listen to it. :-)
that was no where near a roast, it was very complimentary
OCD
You mean normal human decency? Yeah, nice that some people still have that. 😂
I used to think James as a boring old man, now that I'm older I think he is the funniest of the trio. His humor is just on different level.
Honestly if you're someone that grew up watching Top Gear and any other content involving these three, I think who your favourite is changes with age, as it did for me. I think when you're a young kid, Hammond is the one that would appeal to you the most; the most outwardly charming of the bunch (and the most kid and family-friendly media personality of the bunch, you may know him from other shows too) with a lot of obviously funny lines and imaginative, if a bit silly ideas. Then as you progress to being a teen, you start to prefer Jeremy and his loud, brash, contrarian, no-nonsense and inconsiderate approach to... everything. I think though as you grow past that into your 20s etc., you do start to realise that not only is James the most intelligent and well-rounded of the bunch, but yeah his humour, his one-liners and stories are just amazing, in a way that might go over your head (again, as it did for me) when you're younger.
'She's effectively saying 'You've given me the baby, now get in the back.''
They are best as a trio and they know it. Still, I always love watching James and Richard content.
considering in 2011 james may looked excacly same as in 1976 in certain motercycle magazine...
he has aged extremely well, if you took that in to count.
Yea
As I've gotten older, I've started to realise how absolutely hilarious James May is
He's thorough...I like that 🤣
“They collapsed didn’t they” -James’s confidence in Hammonds business
Twisting the knife right at the end, so funny! Brutal stuff.
Savage!! 🤣
Well no not really they both produced Germanic Reichs as an off shoot, so may be Hammond Should think about restoring Mercs, Wanderes and Adlers.
And they were both headed by megalomaniacal short arses. Hhhhmmmmm
Classic James
That genesis joke is a deep cut... For the people who have been watching these 3 for decades
made me laugh out loud
😅true
Me, I'm just an air compressor
It's a bit surprising that Hammond didn't insist on painting that over.
Made me laugh a lot
It's nice how it says "roasts" but James is just complimenting it for most of it. It's kinda wholesome, since that mix of compliments and roasting is how pretty much all English mates compliment each other.
From a hobby perspective it was complimented. From a business perspective it was roasted.
I love the trio in their own ways, but James, man, he's special. My favorite presenter and will always be.
speaks the truth.
We need a series of James May walking through people’s houses pointing at old pieces with sentimental value saying “is it worth saving?”
Is it tho…
"do we need em?" ~ Karl Pilkington
Well, as long as he doesn't start going to hospitals with that mindset...
The Simpsons did it already
@@Pebble_Collector I came here for this comment, so glad to see it 🤣
I find it funny that James is the one that’s stayed the most similar to his younger top gear self. Jeremy turned into a farmer, and Richard started a car restoration “business”
To be fair May started out being rather stylish and gentlemen like - now he is the age Woodstock musician
James has his bunker
Silly millionaires ... 🤣
I never thought of that. Those other two hit a midlife crisis and ventured away from their normal lives. Jeremy lived in London, hated farming, now is in the country farming. Richard Hammond was more of the free spirited guy, now is a responsible business man. James is James, he just does James May things and continues to do so, such as intelligent sarcasm and moving slowly in life.
James does food
"up to 30% of what he paid for it"
Absolutely savage.
Lol and probably true.. I call dibs on the air compressor and the English wheel
He's telling the truth though, I do hope Hammond find some of his equipment 2nd hand, because it's rather common to find equipment in great condition from other's dump sales after their fail workshop business. Everything brand new is a really really ridiculous thing to do.
@@FreeWheeler554 yea I was looking 😂

@@passbyicecube As is selling your assets to fund buying all that equipment. Loan interest and lease payments are are a tax deduction from profit, something that is a reasonable expectation from a business. Not availing oneself of those options leads credence to the "well funded hobby" remark.
I’m currently in my second year training as a mechanic and James May instilled a love of all things mechanical and motoring in me from a young age. I remember getting his Toy Story dvd set and watching him on top gear. I love all three of them but James is in simple terms a genius. I would probably bore him with the questions I would ask but the knowledge that man has and the way he holds himself is something I have always respected about him. Great bloke I really can’t wait to see what he does next, hopefully a few videos where he just talks about his hobbies or tools.
Wait, James released a Toy Story DVD set?

They have an entire separate video highlighting that aspect of the interior design, it would've felt like regurgitated content if they'd then gotten James to go off on a tangent about it.
That piece Richard made was genius!!! Love it!!
Two of my three favorite hosts every of Top Gear. Their rapport was unparalleled. They made that show. And each of them on their own have made outstanding content on Amazon. May's automobile histories are excellent, Hammond's engineering documentaries are awesome, and Jeremy Clarkson is always a joy ;-) I remember a soliloquy he did while driving a Porsche 928, and recalling how he had one when he was making a frantic drive to see his Dad when he was on his death bed. I'll never forget how he tied things together in that manner.

Actually should be titled " Roasting Hammond not working on cars". The shop cannot be roasted. ; )
It's an advertisement
I didn't see any roasting to start with. He was pointing out a really nice workshop. They just used the clickbait title to get views, the usual YT tactic.
You don't need a heater in that place with all the roasting going on. loved it!
I love Richard's enthusiasm, shown in previous episodes, but as a former garage owner(with less space than that), there is nowhere near enough work going on in that beautiful workshop and I think James has sussed that out very well.
He needs more bays for car storage while they wait on parts. Something like the car wizard’s place.
Exactly. Either Richard is funding a hobby or his business isn't working really well. Either way, if i was an investor, I wouldn't put a penny in this venture. I like Richard, but this workshop isn't going to be making any money
"Well-funded hobby." Exactly that.
Did you ever consider they weren't working so they could shoot the video without the noise? In another vid, they indicate all the spots they have for cars in progress and they are all filled with a lot of other cars waiting for an opening. And they just moved over and are still working on settling in to get more efficient. They said they were still unpacking.
