    My experience so far is that the Mavic Air is pretty good at avoiding objects that it can make out from the background as long as it is not moving too fast. However when it goes around a tree it may end up in an area where it can't get out (i.e. off the path into thicker woods) and it then just stops and hovers, and then of course loses you if you keep moving. You have to then come back and manually fly it out of its prediciment. The good is that at least it avoids most objects (ends of branches it does have difficulty with) & remains in the air. There are no leaves on the trees in my area either, but for those who have tried advanced obstacle avoidance with tree leaves the results are not great due to the leaves not remaining stationary and fooling the obstacle avoidance. For most people who use it to follow them outside a forest it should work nicely.

    This video proves why TEDD is the best! Taking the risk testing this for us so we feel more comfortable flying. Great work!!!!

    If you do the same test 7 months ago with the magic air when trees were full of leaves it would have ace every test. I enjoyed the review a lot. Your expression was priceless, I don’t know a whole lot but even I know you can’t fake that. TEDD, you are the man.

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому

      Yeah I bet the leaves would have allowed it more contrast to actually see and avoid. I'll have to retry it again in the spring.

    This video is *the* definitive Mavic Air obstacle avoidance video in all of UA-cam kingdom! And it is real-world usage! Just did a search on UA-cam, and as at 9:37am 1 Feb 2018, I came up empty, except for this video on TEDD channel. Great job!

    Glad you did this, so I know how NOT to crash my expensive new drone! All in all, I'm pretty impressed, I'll never take it into a forest like you did, so this should be plenty to save me from hitting the ocasional obstacles int eh type of flying I do.

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому

      Absolutely, careful use with the obstacle avoidance on should lead to very very few crashes, and what impressed me the most was even when it hit a branch it only actually fell once.

    • @EcuadorLive
      @EcuadorLive 6 років тому +1

      I'm coming from an Autel XSP, which has been a great learner drone for me, has taken all my crashes (including 10 minutes under water) and still flies perfect, but it's feelin' a little dated. The Mavic Air should be the perfect compliment to my orange beast. Cool channel BTW, really enjoying your content, I'm definitely a fan 👍

    Great job of pushing the obstacle avoidance for us to see. The small branches get most of us during manual flights at some point in our flying career. You took the chance and showed us what it would do on your dime, kudos for that! Great practical application and testing. Keep the videos coming.

    Nice video. I got mine yesterday. Soo icky cold and windy out!! The Mavic Air (MA) did a really good job. I wonder if there is a way to determine what the resolution of detection is for the sensors they are using and the density requirements of the objects it detects, in order for the OA software to kick in. That would be a good test. A tree yes, but one branch of 1/2 diameter? Two branches of 1/2 diameter spaced 6 inches apart, 8 inches, 1 ft, etc. That would really give the user an idea of the conditions it can be safely used in.

      That’s very true, I wish they’d release some data on the system because like I said I wasn’t impressed with their demo at their live event but I was really impressed while making this video.

    So glad you did this test! Gives me confidence in my MA. Honestly I wouldn’t have been brave enough to push my drone as hard as you did for all of us to learn from and be inspired by. Quick question though, does the APAS only work in active track or will it work in regular operator controlled flight too?. I will be happy if the system works to just possibly save me from flying into an object by accident. Keep the vids coming!

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому

      Thanks so much!
      Yes the advance system works in regular controlled flight. You just have to turn it on by pressing a button underneath the flight mode selection on the DJI GO 4 app.

      I wouldn't do it on a trail with a lot of trees at full speed. If something were to happen you'd be long gone before you'd figured it out. A more desert or mountainous trail I think it would be awesome.

    I have to admit, "You nailed it!"
    You achieved a real world test of the quad.
    I do alot of running and biking, and what you did in your test would be one of the things I'd be doing to.
    Recording myself biking is one of the reasons I'd want to buy the Mavic Air.
    This is great, this is what you buy a quad for, "real life experience".
    You want to record yourself ..... "Doing outdoor activities."
    Well done!
    That was a legit test of how it really functions, so sports people like me can determine if I want to buy a Mavic Air or not.

      It definitely was a great time and I’m so impressed by what it was able to do 😁

    • @ksmackvolleyball
      @ksmackvolleyball 6 років тому +1

      It would be cool to be able to bike or run for 20 minutes and have the Mavic Air follow or circle you for the entire time, until its battery ran out.
      What really impresses me with this new quad is that it combines all the most advanced technology with its small size.
      So I can carry it with me in my backpack, and use it when the need arises.
      And the small size makes it easy to hide, so when the cops arrive to hit you with a huge fine, they can't pick out the guy who was just flying the drone. (grin)

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому

      That’s how I’m going to do flight time tests from now on, have it do a point of interest flight instead of just hovering 👍

    • @ksmackvolleyball
      @ksmackvolleyball 6 років тому

      Good idea.
      Tests yield better results if you're actually performing a function someone would be using the quad for to record one of their hobbies.
      Very few people are going to use their drone to hover in their backyard for 20 minutes.
      The results you get from a backyard test may not be the same as a test using a practical situation.

      Yeah when you buy DJI Refresh you link the drones serial number to that service. So there isn't anything else to do once its active (or I haven't done anything else....I hope I'm doing it right 😀)

    • @chefjness

    Your obstacle avoidance test was more of a torture test! Wow does it pass with flying colours.
    With the track mode, do you think I can send it a quarter way across the lake, start riding my motorcycle, and have it follow me across the bridge? Reason being, the drone can only do something like 28 km/h while I'd be riding the bridge's speed limit of 60 km/h. Would make for a cool opening scene for my future video channels.

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому +1

      I don't know, I haven't tried an extreme distance active track before. I guess if you're still big enough in the screen it would work. And that would be awesome btw.

    • @DKazzed
      @DKazzed 6 років тому +1

      The Everyday Dad the bridge is only about a km long and I’d only send it 250m out before tracking me, so I hope it’s not too extreme! I’ll wait for your range test!

    Do you think the Mavic Pro would have survived the same crashes like the Air with no damage to the gimbal?
    It looks like one of the current drones are going bye bye... which one do you think? Or both?
    I REALLY am impressed with these tests that you ran. Those branches are impossible to avoid so a real tough test there Sir!

      That I don't know. I would never do this with a mavic pro, but I also don't think that the mavic pro would have made it as far in the woods since its significantly bigger.
      I'm looking at the air right now and it does look there is a scratch on the gimbal so it took a hit, And its still working amazingly.

  • @ChrisJones68
    @ChrisJones68 6 років тому +1

    So I'm curious how the Air would handle an obstacle like an overpass. Say, if you had it tracking you while riding a bike on a city road and you came to an overpass, would it a) stop b) fly up and try to go above the overpass (thereby losing you) or c) drop down, fly under it and keep tracking you from a slightly lower altitude?

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому

      It only avoids horizontally. So in that instance it would just stop and lose you until you go retrieve it 😁👍

    YES! (Screamed at the top of my lungs), finally some real-life, real-use testing provided by an actual, (semi) unbiased user. Given the amount of trees and branches, I agree, the Air did a fantastic job. Weird how the Air couldn't follow you from the front very well, though. Still gonna wait for the Mavic Pro II, however.

    Great stuff, how fast were you going on a bike in open area? Did it lose you? If so, at what speed? I’m trying to find out the highest speeds it can active track on a bike in open area with obstacle avoidance on and off or does it make a difference. It did on a spark, it could track better with it off but has to be free of any obstacles around

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому

      Probably about 15 mph, it lost me a few times but I wasn’t really trying out the obstacle avoidance. I’ll do a follow up video all about the active tracking (probably use my motorcycle for that 😁)

    Was it Active track or follow me mode ?
    Seems like you rode very slow and waited for the drone to catch up with you.
    How about a real life riding at fast speed in the woods. How about a downhill where there are some tress and obstacles here and there, but also lots of open areas. Will it work then ? If so, I am sold...
    I also find the controller/phone combo on the handlebar of a mountain bike quite disturbing...Not aware of any good mount.

I fully expected the Mavic Air to avoid larger objects (like Pillars, wooden fences, walls, etc.), but I certainly give you credit because I would NOT have tried it through the woods with all those branches. That’s why I liked the spark so much, I was never too concerned about it’s safety and after getting some solid wrecks in today I feel great about the Air!
      I hope yours comes soon! 😁

    WOW very impressed. While in active track if you are hiking down a hill will the Mavic Air descend in altitude? Or will you get smaller and smaller?

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому

      I don’t know, I’ll have to try it on a hill. 😁👍

    • @stillwatertag
      @stillwatertag 6 років тому +1

      I don’t think DJI will let you go below your take off altitude. Maybe if you fly to top of hill, hit active track and it will follow back down.

    The music first your walking pace perfectly 😁. Did it ever crash to the ground or did it always restabilize?

    • @TheEverydayDad
      @TheEverydayDad  6 років тому +1

      Yeah it just kind of worked out that way. It crashed legitimately once, but it wrecked into branches 4-5 times and restabilized.

  • @Gidyupcowboy

    Looked pretty good for a congested area and lots of small branches. I just got mine today and curious as to how you get video off of the Air internal storage.

    Oh man that's insane. Other than flight time and range, this is the greatest drone for value right now.
    If only the three battery charger for this charged all the batteries at once.
    Can't decide. The spark is really cheap to pick up right now.
    Hmm. Suggestions?

    • @TheEverydayDad

      Got it, thanks for the quick reply. Otherwise the footage looks very clean, color looks great too.

    • @TheEverydayDad

      A piece of sd card broke in it, I didn’t realize it and forced an sd card in and it bent the prongs, so now it doesn’t read cards. I gotta contact Panasonic about warranty work.

      If it loses you it just hovers, but when it ran into branches it would fall but right itself. One time it did fully wreck.
