So I saw on some videos that the mavic air is more agile and faster because it is capable of leaning more aggressively which makes it faster/more agile. Do you think this makes it better in the wind even though it's lighter than the mavic? I'm interested to see the relationship between the aggressiveness of tilt vs weight of the drone in windy conditions
Thanks for the review and for all the details. Can I recharge the batteries using a power bank? What kind of port it has. As it has just 21 mins of flight mode, I want to know if it can be charged when I travel where I will have just a power bank with no power supply for a week during my Himalayan trekking. I will definitely carry more batteries.
Hey Tom, great videos. I have just found your channel after buying a mavic air. Not my first camera drone but its an awesome package. Keep on bringing thte awesome content
Tom, I really enjoy your posts. I try to view them whenever possible. I believe It was you who mentioned in one of your segments about the Course-Lock feature no longer being available on the Mavic Air - I would really like to know your view of the new Tap-Fly suit of options on the Mavic Air. I personally think that they more than make up for the the absence of the Course Lock feature! You do such a great job going into detail with your reviews, I think your subscribers might appreciate it as well, since few (if any, to date) have covered this powerful new addition to the Air. Keep up the great work!
I could you get so much less views that Casey or iJustine ? Your review is a really good and precise one and you speak about settings and options that no one talks about yet. You deserve a lot more gratitude for your work.
Just looked at the raw footage. That looks almost like my Phantom 4 Pro footage (-2 sharpening user as well). Clean, lots of details, no crazy oversharpening and good DR! Really impressed, especially after that Mavic Pro (Platinum) video mess...
hello. i have 2 questions about the diffrents options filming (dronies, circle around, etc...): 1) how the mavic do to get target in center? use the gps in TX? or just target "silhouette" , like tracking? 2) when doing dronies circle and other option filming, if there is obstacle, did the drone only stop, or get aroud obstacle and continue the dronie and other asking filming? thank you.
Hi Tom, same question here, maybe it is also interesting for your English audience: What about noise? Platinum is making less noise vs. the Pro. What about the Air? Do you get full attention while starting somewhere just based on the noise that it will make?
As a potential first drone purchaser I found your video very informative. Well done! I also enjoyed seeing some of the beautiful places captured with the Mavic Air. Bravo!
Can an iPad be used with the controller? What's Martin talking about?....have to fly line of sight...? There's still the orientation display in the lower left, correct?
Best review of Mavic Air!!! What is the wind impact on Mavic Air? 430g to 743g Mavic Pro...the question for me is really important because at the North Sea there is every day wind and if the Mavic Air shakes too much the 100MBit/s does not really help...Cheers DrDuu
Hello Tom and thanks for all good work trying educated and help other flyers. I have question. Say, you’re standing on steep cliff high 70m above the sea, your Mavic Air is in distance over the sea, RTH is set at 50metres and for some reason craft is auto returning to home point at those 50metres. How it will react when approaching wall of the cliff which is higher than 50m? Will craft stop front of it and hover there ? I assuming that RTH height must be set ahead in this scenario to the highest point just to avoid this situation? What about flying in hilly areas, will RTH set height always adjusting to terrain? Thank for helping me in those situations since my experience is at very “ beginner “ area. Karel .
This was a great video!! Very informative and entertaining. I loved seeing the footage from Israel. The fact a tiny drone took such advantage shots is crazy and it makes me consider purchasing one.
Yes I recently crashed an i2 reversing to reveal a shot, so I concur with you, reversing sensors are very important. There has been a sneak peek of a rear sensor module for the i2, hope you can do a video on this. Regards Tony of Australia
You are fantastic nothing but an proffesional it is a dream looking at your videos I think you are the best one i am looking forward for more videos of the DJI Mavic Air.
What opinion do you have regarding the delay of the video on the phone? Could you fly it away with a good video signal? Greetings from the Canary Islands
Hey Tom, first of all: thank you for this overall review of this drone! After watching this video I see a point where I feel like I have to give you a hint here: please be careful with the data of focal length and f-stops considered to the crop factor. I know that the manufacturers are giving those data but technically they are wrong. What we've got here is a 4.3mm lens with a f2.8 aperture on a sensor with a crop factor of 5.6 That means we can talk about a lens which has an equivalent of a 24mm focal length, but with an aperture equivalent of f16 Telling people it is an 24mm f2.8 is like measuring the width of the drone in centimeters while measuring the hight in inches without telling anyone. All in all a very good review, keep going on!
Very helpful video. Just one thing popped up. Can we use our DJI Spark compatible ipad holders or shall we buy a new one compatible with Mavic Air. Another thing is, as far as I can see the iphone plug is now attached to two extendable arms of the RC. So how will the ipad holder will fit into these arms. Many thanks in advance for the responses...
jeffrey Jackman I’m thinking the Mavic II will include all of these advancements and a few more to boot, I too am happy with the Mavic, it’s still an awesome machine. It’d be nice to have the asteroid and boomerang video options though.
To give you a quick tip towards your Switzerland incident where the card was full. You should get one of those USB dongles that convert your phones charging socket into a USB port. Then you can carry around an SD card reader and hook it up to your phone to empty the drone card.
None of the early reviewers have properly compared the Intelligent Flight modes with the Mavic Pro. The Mavic Air does not have Course Lock, POI, Home Lock, or Fixed Wing mode. Course Lock and POI are absolute essentials for many of the Cinematic shots I like to use. I also haven't seen any evidence that the Active Track feature on Mavic Air includes the Profile and Spotlight modes of the Mavic Pro (we've only seen Trace mode). Profile is the most important tracking mode for most movie scenes using Active Track. I guess keeping quite on certain details was a condition of being an early reviewer. To ensure we remain in the dark until after the initial launch sales, DJI still haven't released the manual download for Mavic Air.
Great review and awesome footage.Just wondering the return to home feature , returns to last point of take off, not bank to controller, or do you have that option? Would be nice when filming from a boat...could be especially bad if battery runs low and it returns to home , but home is no longer there due to boat moved..
Thanks, fantastic video. But... The background, which was panning horizontally in the Circling, Helix, and Boomerang mode, looked "jumpy" and not smooth. Is this a compression artifact with UA-cam or the result of jerked turning by the drone while filming? Thanks!
what would you do? i have the mavic pro but i'm considering to sell it because drones under 500grams (like the mavic air) do not have any flight restrictions in switzerland (which are pretty hard). it's perfectly clear that i wouldn't fly next to an airport, but in switzerland the no-fly zones are in a 10km radius around airports which leave out almost no space to fly Thanks for your help
Good review Tom. I'm sold on how well this drone flies in literally all conditions and the image processing package on-board is doing an amazing job with that tiny 1/2.3" sensor.
This is the best review I've seen for this product, great job!! A few questions, does this support 128GB V30 SD card? Also, how can I download your test footage, as google drive says I currently can't? Thanks again!
Hi Tom, Do you know if the Mavic Pro's filters are compatible with Mavic Air? If not, do you have any suggestion? Thank you in advance for your answer!
Nice review -Thumbs up. It *almost* has everything I need to know. Does it have Tripod mode and terrain follow? Can you tweak the settings like the Mavic Pro for smoother footage? Plus what options like d-log or cinelike are there?
Do you have a guess on when mavic pro 2 will release? And I plan on using my future drone mostly the mountains, afraid high winds that frequent the mountains would limit when i could use a drone the size of the air, what are your thoughts there, would the mavic pro 2 be a better choice with that in mind?
The Mavic Air takes a beautiful video for such a small camera. If the price is really what you quoted, then it's good to go! Very good review. I would be interested in getting one of these.
Tom, the obstacle avoidance is disabled during landing. How this will be an advantage with RH? Especially if you are in a forest area! What about when you use the other drone modes like Boomerang, Circle, Dronie, Helix, etc. Do the anticrash sensors are disabled as well?
For the Mavic Air: -Clicking the "Video Sample 1", link brings me to the DJI site to purchase a Mavic Pro Platinum. -Clicking the "Video Sample 2", link doesn't work any more. Video Sample 2 and 3 still work though. Thank you for sharing video sample files. I really appreciate that! I'm grateful. Thank you.
Thank you! Awesome review! What is the image quality compared to Mavic Pro? With what container do you get the best image quality: .mov, .mpeg4, h264, mp4?
Hi Tom, great video. I want to ask you about the cell phone use as while flying the Mavic Air, How do you prevent incoming calls from interrupting the flight and make you crash? Disable cellphone calls? or is the App doing this automatically? I'd hate to get a call in the middle of a flight and crash the drone
All of these cool modes like boomerang are all selfie modes? What if you would like to get these sweeping shots with something else as the focal point? Can you choose the focal point to fly those intelligent flight modes? Also, did the props get in the shop flying sport mode? And will it finally hold a phone that is in a protective case???
AV8R Tom I can only answer you question about if the controller holds now bigger phones/phones with cases and yes they made the slot a lot bigger so it should fit your phone + case
Very good review, best so far. Some of the flight footage is a little jumpy, it seems to move in steps when panning rather than smooth. They seem like set seeps not random. Is this a problem with the video footage conversion or is the gimbal or flight movement not smooth? Did you use any ND filters when trying to get cinematic shots?
I'm buying my first drone for my birthday present...It will be a DJI Mavic Air...You can't go wrong with this one....Great review … Guess I have to do some FAA stuff in the US (I apologize for our President) but The government here requires us to be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration….I'm curious what your flying heights are? They are saying 400 feet here in the US
can the limit distance in Europe be unlocked ...or if I buy the drone from the usa would this make it able to go 4 km ..or wouldd it still be limited ???
Great job Tom! Please make a video on how to split, cut in pieces without losing quality, then put all together in a 60 secs video say ten 6 secs slices adding music too ... :)
Awesome review!! You're very clear and informative! I do have a question; In circle, boomerang, etc. modes can you do this without having the controller in hand giving yourself to move freely throughout taking video/pic's? Thanks again for the fantastic review! Ray
hi Tom...nice review as always.. in a quickshot mode like helix, circle mode etc.. can we adjust the distance for the drone to circle from the subject? thanx
I have a question for you Tom. You make the best drone reviews and really seem to know what you are talking about. I am wondering if the new asteroid quick shot from the Mavic Air can be uploaded to Flickr? I have tried several times and can't get it to work; do you use Flickr? Do you know if asteroids should be shareable on platforms like that? Any input would be appreciated, thanks.
The rear facing obstacle avoidance, I find with my Mavic, flying towards the sun can stop my drone moving, flying backwards fixes this. Not so with the Mavic Air, you’d have to use sport mode or fly sideways. Can just the rear sensors be turned off while leaving the front sensors active?
so you can use it with a smartphone only or with the remote? for my use is essential that works with only the phone, without carry the remote control, is it possible?
This was an awesome presentation, it really helps me understand this drone. Thank you very much, once more you did a great job showing off a new drone.

I still prefer my MAVIC Pro. This MAVARK is a nuisance...
Toms tech time 1 question: I have the spark and phantom 3. Do you think the Mavic air would be a good upgrade from the spark or phantom 3?
What were the SD card recommendations you had?
Are ND filters designed for Mavic Pro also compatible with Mavic Air?
@Marshall Wait for the Mavic Pro II coming this summer. Getting the P4P camera onto the Mavic will be the next huge step.
Great video Tom. Missed you in New York!
Du machst wirklich die besten Videos was Drohnen angeht, man hört dir gern zu und es ist alles drin ohne überflüssige Infos 👍🏻 mach so weiter..
It's like the Mavic Pro and the Spark had a baby!
Ivan Snz such a quick reply I know
Sparvic or Mavark??
Spanky?
Super comprehensive and professionally done review. This must have taken ages to put together. Well done.
That was the most comprehensive and thorough video I have seen yet of the Air. Awesome job man
Thanks for the review and for all the details.
Great review video Tom! I've placed my order for the Flame Red on DJI's presentation day in New York. Can't wait to get it!

Tom can you please do a long distance test? How far the mavic air can go and also review the video feed from the enhanced wifi? Thanks
This content is so professional it is like from a world class organisation

you sound like Weinstein

Totally awesome video Tom welll done... This new Mavic looks fantastic. ( When did they send this early one to u ?).
Side and Top obstacle avoidance is missing, and 4K 60fps :)
Great drone, great video but i still love my Mavic Pro!!
jeffrey Jackman

jeffrey Jackman i have the platinum mine is better lol
This has all the same stuff the mavic pro does only smaller and the camera can go upwards
A.J. Williams
The Mavic camera can also go up.
I like the new avoidance features

Excellent presentation. A wealth of information that is very helpful. Thank you!!
Dude, overkill review. Awesome work.
Nice video Tom and nice Drone. Am I wrong or we lost flight time and range compared to the « old » Mavic ?
Drone Nerds any chance you could do a test with the mavic air and how it performs doing active track following a subject going down hill?
Thanks, fantastic video. But... The background, which was panning horizontally in the Circling, Helix, and Boomerang mode, looked "jumpy" and not smooth. Is this a compression artifact with UA-cam or the result of jerked turning by the drone while filming? Thanks!

Wonderful tutorial and video footage, I learnt a lot, many thanks.
Hi Tom,
Do you know if the Mavic Pro's filters are compatible with Mavic Air? If not, do you have any suggestion?
Thank you in advance for your answer!
Did you like your trip there ? Amazing place right !
Nice review -Thumbs up. It *almost* has everything I need to know. Does it have Tripod mode and terrain follow? Can you tweak the settings like the Mavic Pro for smoother footage? Plus what options like d-log or cinelike are there?
Do you have any issues with lens distortion? I aim to take more 'straight-down' 90 degree shots of buildings and wanted them to appear straight!
Link to se cards? Awesome video
can i use my dji goggles with the mavic air? is it wifi? or can you use the usb port? was just wondering, thanks Tom !! as always great videos.
Hi what settings do I have to do to get the drone hovering like you do at home please I’m worried I will take of and it will hit roof thanks
Great review Tom! DJI please take my money and I will put this in my kayak hatch. Thumbs up from Sweden
Great job and very detailed. Thank You
thanks great review....im still on the fence with Mavic Air. I fly alot in montana back in the mts......not sure if wifi is going to work there...
Fantastic video as always. Can this be used with the DJI goggles?
Do you have a guess on when mavic pro 2 will release? And I plan on using my future drone mostly the mountains, afraid high winds that frequent the mountains would limit when i could use a drone the size of the air, what are your thoughts there, would the mavic pro 2 be a better choice with that in mind?

Tom, the obstacle avoidance is disabled during landing. How this will be an advantage with RH? Especially if you are in a forest area! What about when you use the other drone modes like Boomerang, Circle, Dronie, Helix, etc. Do the anticrash sensors are disabled as well?
How are flight restrictions in Israel? You were commenting once about wanting to move to U.S., but I hear Switzerland is drone friendly.
For the Mavic Air:
-Clicking the "Video Sample 1", link brings me to the DJI site to purchase a Mavic Pro Platinum.
Awesome in-depth review on 1st day of announcement. Thanks.
It seems like your lav mic picks up a lot of noise from the drone when you were presenting. Was this intentional?
Hi Tom, great video. I want to ask you about the cell phone use as while flying the Mavic Air, How do you prevent incoming calls from interrupting the flight and make you crash? Disable cellphone calls? or is the App doing this automatically? I'd hate to get a call in the middle of a flight and crash the drone
HI Tom, Will the controller hold an Iphone 7 Plus?
All of these cool modes like boomerang are all selfie modes? What if you would like to get these sweeping shots with something else as the focal point? Can you choose the focal point to fly those intelligent flight modes? Also, did the props get in the shop flying sport mode? And will it finally hold a phone that is in a protective case???
AV8R Tom I can only answer you question about if the controller holds now bigger phones/phones with cases and yes they made the slot a lot bigger so it should fit your phone + case
Great video thanks. What do you think of the 2.7k 60fps footage?
Very good review, best so far. Some of the flight footage is a little jumpy, it seems to move in steps when panning rather than smooth. They seem like set seeps not random. Is this a problem with the video footage conversion or is the gimbal or flight movement not smooth? Did you use any ND filters when trying to get cinematic shots?
Amazing!! Great review can you confirm if the mavic air has the point of interest intelligent flight mode?
Need better lighting for night orientation and when are they going to put in a built-in display into the controller?
Will wait for the proper Mavic successor before upgrading. The range on this model is lackluster.
Great video! It's very detail
BTW, Is this drone can charge by the power bank like dji spark dose?
Great review Tom! Did you encounter any problems with the wifi transmission?
Do you mind sharing how you did that opening shot with the 3d camera? Mount on drone?
Great review, congrats!
The controller is compatible with Spark?
hello, under mavic air there are 2 sensors. does both sensors light up for you or just one ?
Awesome review!! You're very clear and informative! I do have a question; In circle, boomerang, etc. modes can you do this without having the controller in hand giving yourself to move freely throughout taking video/pic's? Thanks again for the fantastic review! Ray
great video as always Tom, How do u think the camera compares to the DJI Phantom 4?
hi Tom...nice review as always.. in a quickshot mode like helix, circle mode etc.. can we adjust the distance for the drone to circle from the subject? thanx
If you select a person track could you record some one play sports? Like football ?
Rear sensors! Best addition yet!
Excellent review as always, very accurate. Could you please precise for european friends what's the range gonna be? Thanks!
can u do a complete set up first flight with all aspects and controller also is it true about dji customer service ive never delt with them before
You say you can do tiny planets and 360 photos with the smart phone. Does that mean you can't do them with the controller?
The rear facing obstacle avoidance, I find with my Mavic, flying towards the sun can stop my drone moving, flying backwards fixes this. Not so with the Mavic Air, you’d have to use sport mode or fly sideways.
Can just the rear sensors be turned off while leaving the front sensors active?
so you can use it with a smartphone only or with the remote? for my use is essential that works with only the phone, without carry the remote control, is it possible?
for example to make an auto active track in the field
Now I can't wait for the mavic pro 2.... If this guy is this good the mavic pro 2 will be crazy
This was an awesome presentation, it really helps me understand this drone. Thank you very much, once more you did a great job showing off a new drone.
