My favorite part about this episode is just how well Maul's voice actor is able to get across the full range of emotion's he's going through. The tortured lab rat who realized what he was after he was discarded, all the while begging the other rats to listen to him about the scientist. The pain in every word he gets across is just beauty
Sam is one of my favorite Star Wars actors. I almost wish Disney would do a “What if” series. That way they could do whatever they wanted, like the sequel trilogy, and not have to worry about screwing up cannon.
@@Zaron_Gaming nah mate, he does excellent with starkiller, even if you think character is trash. Witwer still amazing, even if the voice acting is the only good thing (subjective)
I adore his voice acting. the frustration in his voice when he was talking with Ahsoka, the pain, it was incredible. Everything about him in this series was done right. This is peak Maul.
I remember watching this fight and thinking to myself, “This doesn’t look like a Clone Wars duel.” No quick moves and dodges. Maul’s movements felt so fluid. This arc was so good.
@@amvcentral9198 That is why this is the greatest ever, it isn't all hokey bullsh!t. and I think Full Fat knows that very well, he was just searching for a way to avoid admitting he was wrong. Sad, but everyone is like that now, its why this world is going to burn itself down, very soon.
Maul screaming in fear at the end gives me chills. He’s not afraid of being a prisoner of the republic he’s afraid of the guy who’s going to destroy it from within.
He knows that being captured by Ahsoka and the Clones will lead him to be at Darth Sidious' hands, it's almost like Ahsoka and the Jedi were doing Palpatine a favor by capturing Maul
The dialogue is also perfection. His first scream is one of anger, his obvious first reaction. "YOU'RE all going to burn!" His second is the painful begging for everyone to just listen to him that was building throughout the entire episode. "WE'RE all going to die!"
ARC Trooper -Halo to be fair tho, they basically kept the siege of mandalore off the books (meaning only the Jedi council knew about it, I don't even think palpatine realized or cared that it was happening) and that was because of the imminence of the situation. Remember palpatine was "captured" by grevious right before it all began. I also think to that end, if maul had been delivered to the Jedi council THEN palpatine would've sensed it and done something about it (because maul could've given them the missing pieces about sidious) but that never happened
Sam Witwer, the voice actor for Maul, confirmed that Maul actually had the better plan, was actually trying to stop Sidious and save the galaxy, and that Ahsoka should've joined him. You completely disregarded this by saying that Maul was just trying to kill Anakin without explaining the context of that. Maul wasn't trying to kill Anakin because that's the Sith way of doing things; he was trying to kill Anakin to stop Sidious and--more importantly--stop Vader from being born. Ahsoka asked Maul what he wanted with Anakin, and instead of lying to manipulate her, he tells the truth.
Yeah, this video seemed very much like the conclusion was reached long before the “debate” started. Like downplaying the fact that they used real actors to not only capture the physical character of Maul when he fights, but also to give it a sense of weight that makes the hits feel harder. That point is given as “it’s closer to live action” - seriously? I also don’t see why Maul not being able to fight in live action is anything to do with this, especially in the way it was said. And comparing this fight to awkwardly going back onto the stage after a mic drop is just unfair, especially since while Maul vs Obi-Wan is a great scene, it’s far from a great *fight*. - in my opinion, anyway
Yes, Maul wanted to kill Anakin to stop Sidious, but Maul has always been obsessed with gaining power, especially after his return in Clone Wars. Ahsoka was still right, Maul wanted to take Sidious' place.
@@noahmeserve9165 @Noah Meserve I really don't think it was about gaining power here. He knows he, the jedi, all have lost except for Sidious. After being stripped away from his family, the choice of how to live, and then being cast aside, he want to take Sidious' most prized possession. like a dead man's hand. To ruin all of the work he has done for so long cultivating Anakin into the perfect Sith apprentice. In the long run, perhaps but having lost almost everything I don't think he would have pursued power as Sidious has. He does not care of the extermination of the jedi, he purely cares about revenge on all of those that have crossed him.
Two honourable mentions: 1) After kicking Maul out of the window, Ahsoka catching her breath and a facial expression showing how much the early half of the duel was taking out of her mentally and physically. It made her look like every fibre of her being was focused on being able to match Maul let alone threaten him. Amazing touch. 2) "You're all going to burn!" Ironically, I got a cold chill and a half from that....
Sam Witwer did a phenomenal job as Maul and I can only hope to one day match his level of maniacal screaming and raw aggressive vocal talents as displayed where he screams "you're all going to burn" and "Kenobi" in Rebels.
I think both fights were homages to the canon time periods they were close to. The Maul and Kenobi fight almost represents the simpler, less drawn out combat that we first saw in A New Hope, whereas the Maul and Ahsoka was both an Homage the Kenobi and Anakin’s final duel as well as to the flashy cinematic and mythic combat of prequel movies.
Actually the Maul vs Kenobi fight is an homage to the qui-gon jinn vs Darth Maul fight in episode 1. Kenobi starts out in his normal stance, but shifts to the form we see qui-gon jinn fight and die in before the batlle actually starts. Baiting Maul into trying to defeat him with the same moves he used to kill qui-gon jinn all those years ago. Maul takes the bait and Kenobi strikes him down.
@@Ockerlord I saw it more as switching to the form obi-wan uses in a new hope, he there uses this style so it’s a change from prequel obi fighting to ot obi fighting
well said. I like the many competent, the only competent duels mentioned here, Yoda v Sidious, and Mace v Sidious are great too. Not as symbolic. I just wish that Vapod could have been represented here. We in the know, know about Vapod, but it could have been represented a bit more, IMHO.(the question would be how? (Not like we could see Vapod)
Yo, am I the only one who thinks filoni's work got weaker and weaker with time. Clone wars is peak star wars to me-legit takes the best part from all star wars content (when it is good itself-d squad). And season 7 was definitely a tremendous return to form, with the bad batch being fun and siege of mandalore being phenomenal (hot take to say the best of star wars?). While rebels was great, It missed the mark a lot more than TCW and just wasn't on the same level. And the mandalorian... yo, I'm hopeful for season 2 but for me season 1 was the most boring thing I've ever seen in star wars, just could not get into it. For me mandalorian < rebels < TCW < siege of mandalore (yh it deserves it's own place don't @ me). Like, am I the only one? I also forgot resistance, or at time of writing the comment originally forgot filoni made it, but resistance is generally less than rebels (though I say better than mandalorian, first 2 epsidoes of season 2 hasn't changed that, but to watch ep 3.
I get chills every time when Maul screams "YOU'RE ALL GOING TO BURN! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!" The level of PTSD this man has from Palpatine is unmatched.
What made the scene at the throne room soo powerful was, that the decision, whether to join Maul, wasn't the typical "joining is bad, not joining is good" thing. It was turned. Joining Maul would have been the "good" decision, because by fighting him, Ahsoka let's the galaxy fall. It was a very well and needed twist for such a scene in Star Wars. It was great!
Maul has the best saber fights PERIOD. maul vs Obi wan and Qui Gon Jinn Maul and Savage vs Obi wan and Ventress Maul vs Pre Visla Maul and Savage vs Sidious Maul vs Ashoka Maul vs Ben Kenobi
I think the only one that comes close is Obi-Wan. He shares a lot of Maul's best fight, and he is in my favourite duel, Obi-Wan vs. Anakin. I love Duel of the Fates, it is amazing, and absolutely one of the best lightsaber duels ever, but the emotions during the Battle of the Heroes are just too much for me. For me, it's probably 1. Battle of the Heroes 2. Duel of the Fates 3. Maul vs. Ahsoka 4. Maul vs. Obi-Wan (Twin Suns) 5. Maul & Savage vs. Sidious There are a lot of other good ones, of course, the best ones that I haven't mentioned are probably Vader vs. Ahsoka and Vader vs. Luke (Both, but Empire is better than RotJ), Scene 38 reimagined if you want to count that one. If you're counting moments in general, then Vader's hallway scene is either at #3 or #4 for me.
@@sup7673 that one is amazing because kenobi knew he couldn’t take both of them out in the open so he knew going to the tight quarters cave was the better move.
@@fissilewhistle thing is, none of the jedi are truly attached to the jedi order, they're attached to the jedi they've met within the order. not to mention that anakin got into the temple at age 9, and almost instantly graduated from initiate to padawan. this lead to much jealousy from fellow padawans and initiates, as they had to work hard to become a padawan and not get sent to the agricorp (farming) or the navicorp (exploring space) every one of them wanted to become a padawan, and then this outsider comes in and becomes a padawan seemingly on day one. anakin didn't make many friends within the order, resulting in fewer attachments to sever should he betray the order, not to mention the jedi council making decisions that would cripple his relationship with them. Their arrogance in that regard truly broke any chance of Anakin remaining a jedi. Not to mention that Anakin was slated to become a jedi councilar (negotiator) when the tales he had heard about as a slave on tatooine were about the jedi guardians. the Guardians are the heroes who go out and free slaves, fight to free planets from cruel governments, they're the foot soldiers. then there are the jedi shadows the ones that deal directly with the sith. a jedi guardian won't normally come across a sith unless they are on a battlefield. the shadows directly hunt the sith down. you've heard about sith assassins? well jedi shadows are the jedi equivalant.
@@urticantspoon9960 Jedi shadows certainly aren't mentioned much or at all, first time hearing about it, and from what I know I'd say that's because Jedi shadows were discontinued after the Sith were no longer seen from for a century or a few. It's logical to say they saw no point in it anymore after so long. But that is interesting, thank you I'm going to go find the lore for that.
The one thing I feel separates the two scenes of Maul vs Obi Wan and Maul vs Ahsoka is that, like the Avengers in the Infinity War film, Ahsoka truly does not understand what is at stake. She has an idea, and she's open to learning more, but her desire to trust her master keeps her from making the difficult choice. Maul is probably being his deceptive self, but he genuinely looks tired of the war, and like he's wanting to change. Ahsoka could probably change him. But it wasn't meant to be. In the Maul vs Obi fight, Obi Wan knows the stakes. The reality of just how important the decisions they're making are to the future of the galaxy is fully revealed to him, and he would die to protect the last chance for hope in the galaxy. His fight is short because he decided that Maul need to die the moment he threatened Luke. Ahsoka isn't really fighting Maul with that goal. She's fighting to capture him.
I think what Obi-Wan exhibited against Maul was basically the Jedi equivalent of Ultra Instinct. All he needed to do was to make the decision: kill Maul. Then the Force moved his body to do the rest.
That’s the thing that makes Maul’s story all the more tragic, when you think about it, I think that Ahsoka really could have changed Maul and made him a better person, it was only when Maul, for once in his entire life was mostly honest, and if not completely honest probably the most honest he has ever been in his entire life and when Maul told Ahsoka the truth about Anakin’s fate she refused to believe it. Had Maul not been honest on what he had planned to do, she likely would have joined him, and maybe even changed him to be a better person, Maul is truly one of the most tragic character in all of Star Wars if you think about it.
What I love is how this fight manages to make Twilight of the Apprentice even better! When Ahsoka saw Maul in Rebels, we thought she just knew him by reputation. Post-Phantom Apprentice though, we realize they were almost partners and arguably only survived Order 66 by using each other. They could've been the new Jedi and the new Sith... if not for Ahsoka prioritizing Anakin.
What I think makes the twin suns duel more of a beautiful thing, is that Kenobi doesn't let Maul fall, he catches him and comforts him in his last moments.
Because in a flash Kenobi knew that his death blow would finally break Maul’s fever of vengeance and restore Maul to... wait, what? Oh never mind, he’s still obsessed with vengeance again only now it’s against Siddious 😂
Crazy how far this show came. If you went back to when this show was just starting and told people that the last and one of the best duels of the show would be between Ahsoka and a resurrected Darth Maul they'd think you're crazy
I really like Star Wars: Clone Wars (2D series), but I'm glad The Clone Wars existed. If it weren't for The Clone Wars, we wouldn't see Darth Maul having a personality, and we wouldn't have an enjoyable character of the Prequel Era such as Ahsoka Tano. As much as I enjoyed General Grievous (from 2D series) kicking Jedi Booty, I must admit, Ahsoka vs Maul is a pretty cool fight.
Punctuation Man take your opinions and get out of this comment section (btw, I thought that about S1 Ahsoka. Especially after the S5 finale she was just amazing, why do you think Disney is using her in everything these days).
Ben Martin Yeah, Ahsoka was okay in Season 1. But in later seasons, she really started to improve and soon became one of my favorite Star Wars characters.
If I’m being completely honest, Season 7 was fairly by the books until The Siege of Mandalore made it interesting. Bad batch was the standard Clone story we all grew to love since we got so attached to the clones like Rex as characters. And the Sisters arc helped reacquaint us with Ahsoka before her showdown with Maul. However those episodes were pretty average until The Siege Of Mandalore began, finally giving us what we waited years for. And I loved every second of it.
They didn't pick those two arcs arbitrarily. Check out what Filoni says about it if yer interested - I felt similarly until I looked past the surface and saw what the intent was. Made me appreciate the final 4 sooo much more ontop of that!
Coeus Darksoul they did have purpose in reestablishing Key characters we would follow in the final episodes such as Ahsoka and Rex. And I’m a little disappointed the Son of Dathomir storyline wasn’t adapted into the show since it would’ve also touched on Mauls character before the big finale.
@@coeusdarksoul2855 Link please - if possible. I was really not impressed with Sisters arc (seemed to "kiddie" to me) but I had faith in Filoni getting it right. I would love to see what he had to say about it.
The moment Maul realized he's not unique in his suffering really marked his downfall. Prior to dueling Obi-Wan=driven by pure hatred for the Jedi, after dueling Obi-Wan=seeking revenge. And this flows into Rebels as well, when he's noticeably less intense in a way unrelated to aging, and it's only after finding out Obi-Wan is alive did he rekindle just so slightly.
I think that's what's really so tragic about Darth Maul's story. He seems like he's on the brink of embracing the light, and yet at the end of his life, he still failed to control his anger and lust for revenge, and it ultimately became his downfall.
Instead, he'd read up on the events of KOTOR II, and learned that a triumvirate of Sith never works out, either with all parties being equal or with one master and two apprentices. After all, an alliance forged in hatred is a fragile one at best.
@@ieuanhunt552 functionally not a sith true, but offically he is. And he wouldn’t be as powerful as he was if kreya never taught him to hone his abilities.
her lightsabers are shiny, I never realized that detail before. there's so much detail in it, the choreography is brilliant, I understand the story and history in the Twin Suns fight, but this one takes the cake for me. However, Sidious vs Maul & Oppress is wonderful, and I think underrated. Seeing Sidious in his prime is incredible, possibly my favorite one. (and once again, win for Maul)
Sidious vs Maul and Savage is honestly my favourite fight. I never really cared about his brother but Maul is one of the most interesting fictional characters I've ever come across, his struggle just seems so human I freaking love it. His duels are always incredible too 😁
@@Br-kc2jy the only bad thing about the clone wars is the movie (second worst star wars movie, it's seriously shit in every way), EVERYTHING ELSE IS PERFECT AND I COULD NOT INSULT IT
I love how, you can actually feel the pain in maul's voice, like he knows it's already over for him but is at least trying to cling onto the hope that, somebody else might see it the way he does.
During Ahsoka's quest to capture Maul, the viewer really felt like she was doing something very dangerous, yet extremely necessary, and she was at her best abilities so it was time to go all or nothing. That's what made watching her evolution over 7-10 years make these moments incredible. Applause to the writing and animation team that made these episodes, both of these characters truly deserved it.
The thing is, the atmosphere before the duel was pretty calm, yet slightly unnerving, like an inevitable storm was about to hit, and yeah, i guess thats the perfect atmosphere for the duel, as at the time, things are going alright, yet we know that its only a matter of time before suddenly everything goes loose and the entire fate of the galaxy is turned on its head, something this duel captures quite well
I think they struck a pretty solid balance between the floatyness of the old animation style and the weighty feel of a mocap. Notice how a bunch of the animations a sped up a bit or modified from their mocap form
I love how you pointed the parallels to Last Jedi. All the pieces where there for the film to be amazing, Rian Johnson just needed to put them together better.
I just love the premise. Maul trying to make Ahsoka see Sidious' plan, knowing that it has all fallen into place, but not knowing that by then it is too late to stop it. Maul is being reasonable and honest, and though not altrustic, sincere even if it is just for his own interests. He is absolutely correct about Anakin, and they come so close to an agreement, but Ahsoka refuses to believe that her friend could fall so far. It gives a lot of weight to the Vader/Ahsoka fight in Rebels, and though I do not like Rebels, that fight is amazing, and certainly one that FFV should cover if they have not yet done so.
Easily the best fight. For me it is tied with obi wan v anakin in live action. So much is built up for a fight like Ahsoka v Maul. The acting was better then anything I have seen in Star Wars. The animation and choreography left my mouth open the whole time. While we don't get duel of the fates we get something that holds up to duel of fates pretty well. That make you so invested in the fight even though we know what already happens. They make Maul so much bigger of a character cause he and Ahsoka had a chance to prevent the downfall of the republic.
They couldn't prevent the downfall but they could at least harms sidious plans and carve out their own empire as maul does in the criminal underworld. Even then tho I can't see ahsoka truly joining him.
In my opinion this fight is hilariously overrated. There are animated duels that are just as good and there are live action duels far better than this. The emotional weight of the duel isn’t very big, tons of other fights in Star Wars beat it out in that way. the choreography, while better than every other animated duel, is just average compared to live action (which is impressive).
@@louismasiello8966 you have a pretty ass opinion but i can respect it🤣 this fight has been built up like crazy since clone wars ended and it was announced that they were supposed to fight during the seige of mandalore, if you watched rebels hearing them talk like they have faced eachother was also hype building even though we didnt know clone wars was back. thats why this duel is one of the best and built up. you just dont understand why it was built up which i understand as wel
Really nice insight, I hadn’t thought about the parallel with TLJ. Also nice and really true conclusion: both Kylo and Maul act like they want to be something new and different, but they’re actually too consumed by the Dark Side, which, being a form of slavery of the soul, doesn’t really leave them the freedom to be something different from what they are: power obsessed monsters. Plus, unlike Kylo and Vader, Maul didn’t even have the slight consolation of being the boss of an intergalactic empire: his life was just rage, fear, humiliation and suffering.
My only problem with the final series of clones wars is that they didn't adapt the book which shows what happened to Ventress so we could get closure to the character in the show. Could have made for a great little 3-4 episode arc.
I forgot about Ventress!! Dude they should have brought her in with that early Ashoka arc! I didn’t really like it that much it was kinda boring. I see the angle they were playing though it added to the overall story of the season but it was kinda a waste for the last season.
Good point. Why did we spend so much time introducing a new team of clones knowing that they were just gonna fall victim to order 66 instead of getting closure on Ventus? The first two arcs feel pointless. Establishing new characters just to watch them essentially die.
Kyle Garrett and they’re making a new show about the bad batch now also right? Don’t get me wrong I liked the episodes in the final season but if they’re making a show why waste time with that also?
@@kylegarrett2429 yeah. The first one was a least fun but the Martez sister arc was way too slow moving and added nothing of value for both the story and Ahsoka's character. It's especially frustrating because they had 3 arcs they could've done like Boba vs Cad Bane, Ventriss's final arc, and an Arc where General Grievous was a badass like in the 2D clone wars series.
Hopefully we'll get to see the 40 still unfinished Clone Wars episodes (which would have happend before the shows finale) on screen, some time in the future (in some way or form at least).
Unpopular Opinion: No. Yes I know but I don't like the fight itself. It's very smooth and fluid but I think it's too slow moving and feels more like they're practicing for the fight than the actual fight. I don't hate it but I don't think it's amazing like everyone else. But that's just my opinion.
@@lonebattledroid4474 yes, i mean i can understand. I personally like exactly that, because it feels dirtier and more like an actual fight. Like in the original trilogy where the fights were slower but you could really feel those hits
@@penta_noir well that's the thing I don't feel like it's more dirty or gritty like in the OT where you feel every thrust and slash and I don't think it has the fast pace from the PT. Actually I think the Maul/ Savage vs Palpatine fight did a better job at both. I just don't see it but I'm glad you do.
Tired Cyborg I think what you're missing and all of us were was The Force-Enhanced combat aspect of the duel. They shoulda sped up their duel just a bit to get that fast and deadly flow we see in the Sidious vs Maul and Savage duel.
Strangely enough, thanks to behind the scenes naughty shenanigans, probably the last time we will 'see' Ray Park as Darth Maul ever again (and I was kind of looking forward to him coming back in live action after his cameo in "Solo").
One of my favorite things about the fight is Maul being so scared of Palpatine seeing Maul, such a powerful figure, terrified of Palpatine is so powerful. The line, “Let me go, Let me die!” He knows all is lost, and it adds so much more impact to the eventual takeover of the Sith.
I love that I as a viewer can feel your passion about star wars just by listening to your voice. Hearing people talking about something they are truly passionate about is just something special.
Something I always appreciate is how writers can tie up different pieces of a story scattered across its history, even including the parts not commonly liked or enjoyed.
Something about the Ashoka v Maul fight that I love (and really about the whole Siege of Mandalore arc) is that it showcases Ashoka's growth over the year's. She stands toe to toe with one of the deadliest fighters among the Sith/Jedi and her skill feels so earned because we've seen her grow.
Honestly that is the beauty of Star Wars in that it is more a vehicle for story telling rather than being lodged in a single theme. Nothing did this better than Clone Wars (and Rebels by extension). You can have a big, loud tightly choreographed fight, or you can have a grounded duel like something out of a Kurosawa film, and have both make sense in their place.
Sam Witwer's breakdown on of the twin sun's fight is spectacular., should check it out if you haven't already. How you explained how this tied in so much opened my eyes in a huge way. Never did I draw those comparisons. *mind blown*
I love this fight so much, with two amazing characters duelling (my top 5 favs) they're wasn't things I couldn't love. This is Star Wars at it's finest...
That Ray Parks way of moving is unmistakable. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE seeing the Jedi make full use of the force in their combat, but there's just something so satisfying about the relentlessly swift, perpetually attacking from all angles, apex predator approach that Parks brings to the character of Maul. He is constantly lashing out, entirely unpredictable except in his persistence and speed, and it is all that his opponents can do to ward off the flurry of attacks and hope not to miss blocking one of them.
It was pretty great though, the only thing that soured the experience was the choreography.... which The Ahsoka and maul scene does a WHOLE LOT BETTER.
There's a marvel series known as What If?, which is a series that focuses on what if certain characters swapped places in situations. I would LOVE to see that sort of thing with Star Wars. One cool one would be What If? - Ahsoka Joins Maul
the fact that the Ashoka and maul battle makes so many thematic call backs to the last jedi is why i absolutely love it and its clear that filoni loved the last jedi as well
I actually enjoy how weighted the characters feel when they were duelling. It gave a sense of how powerful the two combatants are and when ahsoka had to take a few breaths shows how much it’s taking her to keep up with maul. and the same with maul at the end he takes a few breaths, it shows how equally matched they are
7:37 That quick cut to the Clone Wars movie that kickstarted the show really shows how far the animation has come. The beginning looks like a PS3 cutscene compared to what it is now
i love that they did motion capture for this fight cause it lets us see the physical weight behind how much maul outclasses ahsoka in battling skills, and how important that moment of rest she has after kicking him through a window shows how it’s taking all of her focus to go toe to toe with him it also makes me Wish other fights in the show had been done with motion capture because i feel the “weightlessness” you said you like about the duels in the rest of the show actually under sells just how high stakes lightsaber fights were when lightsaber fighting was at its peak.
I would put this above twin suns due to what Maul said at the end, that was unironically in my opinion the best line said in star wars, it was due to the voice acting, it was done really well and gave chills due to you knowing it is true.
Sidious vs Maul and Savage will always be the best duel to me. Mostly because it's the first time you get to see Sidious just unleash and man he doesn't disappoint.
This is easily my favourite arc in the entirety of star wars, the weight of the knowledge of everything else that is occuring in the universe at the time is exhilarating, yet sad, it really gets the imagination going. Hats off to the team who put it together!
2:50 No... you did _not_ just use the "fish to fry" analogy for Anakin and Obi-Wan with an immediate cut to Anakin burning... You are evil, and have gained my full respect.
I said from the second the duel started that it was visually going to be the best duel in any episode. It was so fluid and graceful. One wasn't a jedi, the other wasn't a sith...yet you can see how long they and trained.
From watching (and loving) the two videos about these duels, I instantly knew what your answer was going to be when you asked the question at the end. But this is still a great lightsaber duel.
I love that they did mocap for this fight. It feels like it's been so long since we've gotten a thrilling lightsaber fight in live action so the combination of that and animation is extremely satisfying to watch
Vader vs Ahsoka in Rebels was by far my favorite. It carried so much emotional impact than any other lightsaber fight, including Kenobi vs Anakin on Mustafar. Vader is vicious and unrelenting and Ahsoka skillfully fights her former master successfully striking him and damaging his helmet. Then we get to see Anakin shine through momentarily and the affect on Ahsoka is heartbreaking.
Yeah, first time seeing this scene, it seemed a step above, and the culmination of those who made it having spent years mastering their skills and pulling out all the stops. There's noticeable more fluidity and realism to the moves, and the result is an amazing work of art. It's a raising of the bar, and now the one to beat.
U brought up sum great points, an honestly to me this final season of clone wars made the prequel movies that much better....Filoni really knows his shit! An as long as Star Wars is in his hands, it'll continue to be just as amazing as this season was.... great vid
No, his resume does not help him become the President of Lucasfilm one bit. He has little to no business experience and he wold probably be miserable in that position because he wouldn't be able make anything new.
at least once a month I need to hear Maul say "Waiting for what? The republic to fall?............No rules No Law No Justice" the desperation in his voice while trying to recruit Ashoka.
This was by far the best visual animated lightsaber duel. Not even a question. Only one that comes remotely close is Sidious vs Maul and Savage While I agree the final duel between Maul and Obi Wan is great and powerful, I'd argue that this fight is even more so. We know what is going to happen. We know Order 66 is about to take place and this was the *last* chance for it to be stopped. Ahsoka taking the time to listen to Maul shows just how severe the foreground of this battle is. If Ahsoka lost, she'd be dead and Order 66 happens. If Ahsoka won, Maul is captured and Order 66 happens. The beauty of this scene is that once the lightsabers were drawn, it sealed the fate for countless people in the galaxy. Maul vs Obi Wan would have been the best, but Ahsoka taking the time to hear Maul out and think about the offer is what seats this fight as the very best. Maul was right about everything and Ahsoka was blinded by arrogance just like so many others. So I'd argue that this fight does have extreme storytelling precedence even if we knew the outcome of Ahsoka, Maul, and the galaxy's fate. Your opinion is valid, but this is mine
You mentioned the difference between the usual crazy, weightless style of the clone wars, but I think the live action style of this was perfect. When you watch the Maul + Savage v Palpatine your feeling is “oooaaah daaamn” you’re excited for a crazy battle. But this fight is more about the weight of the moment and dread of what’s coming. To me that makes it perfect

José Luis They were basically taking care of this potential threat for Palpatine.
The dialogue is also perfection. His first scream is one of anger, his obvious first reaction. "YOU'RE all going to burn!"
His second is the painful begging for everyone to just listen to him that was building throughout the entire episode. "WE'RE all going to die!"
CMD 3 Yeah that dialogue was A+ in my book
Bang on
For real.
Two honourable mentions:
1) After kicking Maul out of the window, Ahsoka catching her breath and a facial expression showing how much the early half of the duel was taking out of her mentally and physically. It made her look like every fibre of her being was focused on being able to match Maul let alone threaten him. Amazing touch.
2) "You're all going to burn!" Ironically, I got a cold chill and a half from that....
Stephen Conroy only on a few of your limbs though, oh wait
Sam Witwer did a phenomenal job as Maul and I can only hope to one day match his level of maniacal screaming and raw aggressive vocal talents as displayed where he screams "you're all going to burn" and "Kenobi" in Rebels.
Thank god it wasn't ray or we would not have maul for rebels or anything after that because she is so god damn good with force
@Ludimeel Sorbo who got captured? Lol
They burned the bodies of Jedi and their supporters during order 66

This fight was perhaps the most beautiful thing I've ever witnessed. Especially the last episodes. This arc was amazing

I think the only one that comes close is Obi-Wan. He shares a lot of Maul's best fight, and he is in my favourite duel, Obi-Wan vs. Anakin. There are a lot of other good ones, of course, the best ones that I haven't mentioned are probably Vader vs. Ahsoka and Vader vs. Luke (Both, but Empire is better than RotJ), Scene 38 reimagined if you want to count that one. If you're counting moments in general, then Vader's hallway scene is either at #3 or #4 for me.

Jedi Order- teaches Anakin to let go of attachments.
Anakin- lets go of his attachment to the Jedi Order.
Jedi Order- makes surprised Pikachu face.
I don’t think Anakin was ever attached to the Order outside of Kenobi and Ahsoka.
@@ArcNine9Angel Old Republic lore is some of the best Star Wars content.
Don't forget Obi told her to not kill Maul because he could have important info about Sidious.
What an impeccable analysis
@Chad K. Davis uhhh.... Filoni is that you?

Louis Masiello cool.
None of this would have happened if Darth Bane had watched "Schoolhouse Rock." Three is a magic number, man, three is a magic number.

I love this fight so much bc of the motion capture they did with ray park!
I'm so happy this duel has gotten the recognition it deserves, it deserves it without a SHADOW of a doubt
lol
More like a PHANTOM of a doubt, am I right?
Love how Ahsoka's duel swagger disappears into pants and gasps soon as Maul 'exits' through the window.
Nice fakeout Ahsoka, well played :)

He is constantly lashing out, entirely unpredictable except in his persistence and speed, and it is all that his opponents can do to ward off the flurry of attacks and hope not to miss blocking one of them.
Maul and Ashokas conversation was the TLJ Throne Room scene actually done right
It was pretty great though, the only thing that soured the experience was the choreography.... which The Ahsoka and maul scene does a WHOLE LOT BETTER.
@@Fi_Sci_ that's because prequel era duels don't suck ass
José Luis from a certain point of view, you are correct.
*Maul and Ashokas conversation was the TLJ Throne Room scene actually done right again
@@BurkinaFaso69 The Throne Room scene wasn't done right though
There's a marvel series known as What If?, which is a series that focuses on what if certain characters swapped places in situations. I would LOVE to see that sort of thing with Star Wars. One cool one would be What If? - Ahsoka Joins Maul
What if - Fives actually pulls the trigger after learning who the chancellor really was
Everything Filoni touches turns to gold, he should have made the sequel trilogy, although disney would have found a way to screw that over aswell
Wild Wolf they should’ve gave him the title of president of Lucas films instead of that trifling heffa Kennedy
@@oliverclytus7559 Kennedy tries to turn Star Wars into a Disney princess movie.
@@oliverclytus7559 hes not a businessman. he's a writer
He's best at animation, maybe john favreau, he would also be great
But lucas, filoni, favreau and williams make star wars whilst kennedy, abrams and johnson ruin it
Remember seeing this episode when it first came out. I cried and feel no shame to admit it. What an amazing serie finale.
The best duels of Darth Maul are in the Phantom Menace and Darth Maul: Apprentice. They combined them and made The Phantom Apprentice...
What an amazing breakdown!!! Couldn't agree more!!! Thanks for sharing!
It is truly amazing how far The Clone Wars came as a series
the fact that the Ashoka and maul battle makes so many thematic call backs to the last jedi is why i absolutely love it and its clear that filoni loved the last jedi as well
I actually enjoy how weighted the characters feel when they were duelling. It gave a sense of how powerful the two combatants are and when ahsoka had to take a few breaths shows how much it’s taking her to keep up with maul. and the same with maul at the end he takes a few breaths, it shows how equally matched they are
7:37
That quick cut to the Clone Wars movie that kickstarted the show really shows how far the animation has come. The beginning looks like a PS3 cutscene compared to what it is now
The footwork in this fight sets it apart from everything else. Even when you're not looking at it, it adds power and weight to each stroke and parry.
i love that they did motion capture for this fight cause it lets us see the physical weight behind how much maul outclasses ahsoka in battling skills, and how important that moment of rest she has after kicking him through a window shows how it’s taking all of her focus to go toe to toe with him
it also makes me Wish other fights in the show had been done with motion capture because i feel the “weightlessness” you said you like about the duels in the rest of the show actually under sells just how high stakes lightsaber fights were when lightsaber fighting was at its peak.
This is the greatest animated star wars dual:
Potential future animated duel: oh I don't think so.
How did you manage to spell duel right the second time but not the first time?
Four words: Ray Park motion capture.
I could see his real world style in the fight before I even knew he had done the mo cap work.
They need more writers and creators on the movies that see Star Wars, as the story and characters, with the clarity you see them with.
I did NOT realise the fight was done in motion capture. That is amazing!!!
The greatest animated lightsaber duel ever
me: have you ever seen the star wars the old republic cinamatics
I said from the second the duel started that it was visually going to be the best duel in any episode. It was so fluid and graceful. One wasn't a jedi, the other wasn't a sith...yet you can see how long they and trained.
“We’re just comparing jaffa cakes to jammie dodgers here it’s all f*****g delicious” 😂
... so true
dont know what any of that is lmao
The close ups in that last episode are so beautiful, the movements look so realllllll
The choice Ashoka makes impacts even harder when she meets maul in rebels and then meets Vader and discovers the truth
From watching (and loving) the two videos about these duels, I instantly knew what your answer was going to be when you asked the question at the end. But this is still a great lightsaber duel.
when the community tab lied and it isnt on the meme lord....
WE HAVE BEEN HOODWINKED
that wasn't my intention, and that image does pop up in the video! i just wanted to share it for the lols
@@FullFatVideos nah i understand mate, just love kenobi........
I didn't realize they got Ray Park in and did mocap for the fight. What an awesome idea, no wonder it was so great.
This is my fave duel in all of Star Wars. I think that’s because Ahsoka and Maul are two of my favorite SW characters.
Full Fat Videos: Obi-Wan vs Maul in Rebels is the greatest animated duel!
Maul vs Ahsoka: Hold my beer...
I think the supposed "last jedi parallel" was just a flex from filoni saying: this is how you do it bitcheeess
It really wasn’t. Did you miss the interview where he praised Johnson? I guess that doesn’t fit the narrative
U brought up sum great points, an honestly to me this final season of clone wars made the prequel movies that much better....Filoni really knows his shit! An as long as Star Wars is in his hands, it'll continue to be just as amazing as this season was.... great vid
4:38 when I first saw that I immediately thought of heath ledgers joker talking to Harvey dent in the hospital.
Dave Filoni needs to be president of lucasfilm the resume speaks for itself
No, his resume does not help him become the President of Lucasfilm one bit. He has little to no business experience and he wold probably be miserable in that position because he wouldn't be able make anything new.
at least once a month I need to hear Maul say "Waiting for what? The republic to fall?............No rules No Law No Justice" the desperation in his voice while trying to recruit Ashoka.
This was by far the best visual animated lightsaber duel. Not even a question. Only one that comes remotely close is Sidious vs Maul and Savage
While I agree the final duel between Maul and Obi Wan is great and powerful, I'd argue that this fight is even more so.
