    My Ohuhus are supposed to come tomorrow, and I’m excited to see how they perform vs. Copics and Prismacolors. I have a small set of Prismacolors and I actually like them better than Copics. I think the ink is juicier and goes on smoother than Copic. But it’s easier for me to get the lighter shades I need in Copics because there are more available at my local stores in open stock, and I can’t afford to order huge sets at a time.

    So I learned this from my fav youtuber Ree Art, she uses copic as a seemless flat colors. Her trick to is to keep resaturating the previous spot that you're moving on from. You can find a tutorial she posted on her channel, but her method has always worked for me, regardless of the sketchbook or paper im working in. For reference, she uses Rendr paper, right now, i mainly use the illo sketchbook, but I've also used her method on copic paper and bristol board too.

    Even though they aren’t marketed as refillable you can always try refilling your markers using another brands ink refills like Copic for example. It doesn’t ruin the marker. You just have to make sure you colour match well

    Something I will say about prisma markers is that my black came with a *weird* nib. The brush tip was different and when i would flick the marker the ink would kinda go into many small dots. Keep in mind I hadn’t even used them yet. The other colors didn’t do that so.. just be warned if you wanna buy prismas

    • @lela.the.artist
      @lela.the.artist  5 років тому

      Interesting! I haven't had that happen with my prisma's but I did have that happen with my Arrtx marker. Specifically in the comparison video between Arrtx and Copic lol. So I wonder if it just is defect when putting the marker together in production. Not sure. Someone else had commented on that video that their Copic marker did that once too.

    My new ohuhu brush markers will be here tomorrow. I know they sold out in less than 24hrs. The funny thing is that is how I found out about your channel and I am glad I did. I currently have the 100 pack of ohuhu's and like 12 Windsor and Newton brush markers. With my ohuhu's I find that unless it a really tight space I mostly use my chisel tips. Mostly because I can get a more even tone over a larger area.

      @@lela.the.artist I got the skin tone 6 pack and the cool grey six pack of them. They do seem to lay down very nice from my limited marker experience. That is the only brush markers I have ever tried, but they are very nice. I actually drew a bear for my husband for Christmas last year with them and I was able to get a much different texture with them versus my ohuhu's. Though some of that may just be my inexperience. I often do mix media with markers and fill large areas with watercolour or gouache instead! It still requires caution as paper best suited to markers is often ill suited to watercolour. So smooth Bristol is useful as it’s great with markers and if applied carefully can handle water colour and gouache. Be a bit cautious as smooth Bristol is more thirsty for ink than marker paper but is less ink thirsty than watercolour paper! Fun video thanks!

  • @TheSarcasia
    @TheSarcasia 5 років тому +1

    As for the background straight lines yes! But also go slower each line so the ink has time to thoroughly saturate each section. Otherwise you'll still get streaky lines. Also what paper do you use? I find if I'm using just any cold press sketch paper etc. The paper takes the marker ink and you can't move it, where as if you use actual marker paper the ink is more willing to move

    I guess I really have to get around to making that video on how to do a perfect fill in a large space without streaks. I can’t bring myself to type it all out anymore. It’s too hard to explain without being able to show wtf I’m talking about. I will say this: it’s a lot like creating a solid wash of color with watercolor. You really have to keep your working edge wet, or you’ll end up darkening the stuff that’s already dry. Brush nibs give some wiggle room, but it’s just so hard to explain why. Juicy markers are a big deal when trying to do fills. If it’s not putting down enough ink, it dries too quickly.
    I’ll film a tut as soon as I can for brush nibs and bullet nibs. You have to change up how you do it depending on the nib type.

    I've always wondered how Ohuhus could have a formula that is very comparable to the higher end markers, yet are so much cheaper.

    • @griffinsonjupiter
      @griffinsonjupiter 5 років тому

      It's because the Ohuhus aren't refillable, and come from China, so cheaper importing price. Copics are refillable, and from Japan, with much higher importing costs.

    Do you design the character digitally and then print it? Or do you draw it and use black ink to outline?
    I ask because with the prismacolors I draw and use the black marker to outline but then the other colors make the black outline fade into the color. I might be using the wrong paper, but I don’t really know. I’m a beginner.

    • @lela.the.artist
      @lela.the.artist  5 років тому +1

      So when it comes to line art I do make them digitally and then print it. But I do sometimes draw my line art traditionally too, and when I do that I use micron pens to outline. Because if you use the black Prismacolor to to outline what will end up happening is the black will blend into the others colors which is why your outline is fading. Because the markers are made to blend. So I suggest using Micron outlining pen for outlines. =)

    • @superalejcc
      @superalejcc 5 років тому

      I’ve tried prismacolor outliners and micron outliner and same thing happens. It’s actually worst with these.

    • @lela.the.artist

      Most creativity I get is basically inspiration from other artists and Instagram models and just everything really. I definitely recommend adding all sorts of artists on insta, or UA-cam. Create inspiration boards on pinterest and watch videos on character design. Alot of it is putting together a character full of things you like. And then adding fun fantasy things like horns, or wings, or elf ears lol. And I started UA-cam doing digital speed drawings and then decided to do a mixture of digital lineart and traditional marker coloring and I've really enjoyed it so far.

      The Ohuhu brush markers were just released June 19th but quickly sold out on Amazon. They only come in the 48 count color pack for $34.99 and will be back in stock late July on Amazon. You can find the link to the Amazon listing in the description of my Ohuhu brush marker review video.
