As a fan who remembers and watched them win the last cup way too many years ago ,
these players making $10 11 12 Million dollars a year should not need the crowd to motivate them . There is a mysterious losing culture in that organization that boggles most fans minds . Many newer franchises have won cups and really isn't that what it is all about at the end of the day .. The average real fan can't afford to go to games because of the crazy tickets prices .. The Leafs have long catered to the corporate crowd, the demure stands last night shouldn't come as a surprise. If you're privileged enough to attend a leafs game, let alone a Leafs playoff game, chances are exuberance isn't your forte. It's been said for years that only a fraction of Leafs tickets are available to the public, most is tied up in season tickets for fortune 500 companies and their ilk. A crowd of suits will never be as loud as Boston, Florida or Tampa fans because their die-hard fans can get reasonably priced and reasonably available tickets. The vast majority of die-hard Leafs fans accepted the fact they will never have the financial means to attend a Leafs game. In fact, everyone I know who's been to a Leafs game doesn't care about the Leafs or hockey or sports in general and the tickets were always gifted to them by some law firm/investment firm as an enticement/bribe/perk. I'm a middle-aged life-long Leafs fan that couldn't fathom watching in person. Those who watch at home and those in the stands are of two different worlds. I even caught myself thinking last night 'Leafs crowd is so old and white it doesn't look like Toronto'.

Some even argued at the time that it was better he got 60 in Buffalo because the crowd at home wouldn't have popped as crazy as they did. So what's the difference? The leaf fans who made the trip to Buffalo are more loyal/committed? Or is it that we pay through the ear for tickets in Toronto that anything less then excellent play from the team makes it feel like it was a huge waste of money/time. Whatever the case is, this fan base needs a reason to cheer proactively and history hasn't helped in that regard.

Okay Sid has a point…although most fans know this team has been struggling since 1967. However, to blame the fans for the team’s loss is inexcusable. For as long as fans can remember this team has been taking fans on this chaotic rollercoaster ride every season. As much as we rant on them after getting eliminated year after year…it’s an ironic truth that we do have a loyalty to our home team because they represent our city.
When you have guys being paid $11 million a year and run by a league that gouges their loyal fan base with ridiculous ticket prices and questionable management you can understand the frustration. At the end of the day it’s the players that need to take accountability for their wins or losses. Yes, fans pay to see these guys play even if the energy dies down during the night it shouldn’t stop them from doing the job they’re paid to do…play the game.

I’m always disappointed in Leafs crowds. That’s what happens when ticket prices are too expensive for the working class, who are the actual fans. It’s most of the time suits. I always laugh at the people that are at the bar, not watching the game, buying $15 drinks. It’s a shame that someone can’t take their family there. No it’s not the reason they lost but it’s a problem and always has been. The raptors crowd is leaps and bounds more energetic.

Now we're blaming the fans??? Isn't it enough that the fans fork over huge money, just to go to the game? The product is not nearly good enough and it's discouraging to continue watching the Leafs fail, year after year after year with little accountability. Put a better product on the ice and the fans will respond, accordingly.

I can't believe I am going to defend Maple Leafs fans but I am. Listening to Joe Bowen on the broadcast complaining about how quiet Leafs fans are is not fair to them. Earlier in the broadcast they read the stat that The Leafs are 9-17 at home during the playoffs during this era. Now 9-18. Last season they were 1-5 at home. No wonder the fans are quiet. They are scared to death!

I'm sorry but it's the playoffs if you play for that team and you're one the guys getting the 10+ million dollars you shouldn't need the crowd to motivate you regardless of the situtation you're on. Even if the loudness of the crowd was a factor, it is way down on the list of reasons the Leafs lose.
1: Powerplay: It sucks, they can't score on it.
2:Penalty Kill: It sucks, they can't stop the other team from scoring when on it.
3: Goaltending: Average at best. Sammy, you never know what you're gonna get from him shot to shot, yet alone game to game.
4: Top 4: Sometimes they show up, other times they're completely invisible.
5: Coaching: Keefe gets out coached a lot and puts stupid lines out at the wrong times.
Right there, there's 5 reasons before you even start to get to how loud the fans are.

  • @BurtTurbo

Leafs have no "big moment" players. Marchand is a "big moment" player, I mean his game winner was a work of art. What, did he have 4 points? Who would you rather have as a captain, Marchand or Tavares? Love him or hate him, Marchand is the kind of player the Leafs lack. We have "Marshmallow" Mitch. Plus, no clutch goaltending, I mean Samsonov let in a softy at a key moment. The Leafs PP and PK are ice cold. What more needs to be said?

Give them something to cheer for. The crown was electric during that one play when Benoit and Reaves landed those big hits back to back... but when you go 0/5 on your power plays and give up the gwg seconds after you just tied the game up late in the 3rd... yea that’s just going to suck the life out of the fans.

It's filled with season ticket holders who don't really care and give there tickets away to business people or whoever completely killing the vibes of the arena. Remember the recent buffalo game? They have not gone to great lengths to build a winning team, just the appearance of one. A cast of players earning near minimum wage. You don't let Hyman and Kadri, go, or pass up Jakob Chychrun if winning is your aim, passing up players for the future and constantly signing reclamation projects.
