How many instances in human history have we "trusted" someone or a group of people (agencies, organizations, etc.) who seem to act in good faith and seem capable of delivering a simple or complex task that they said they were entirely capable of doing, and yet were either lying and ended up stabbing us in the back or were too incompetent or inexperienced to truly keep their end up and still pretended they knew what they were doing, both with DISASTROUS results. I really feel being fully trustworthy of something or someone is a fool's errant and we must always be somewhat cynical or skeptical (or both) of said person(s) and be willing to anticipate any possible betrayal or shortcoming on the part of those whom we "trust."

One of the darkest scenes of the entire series next to Bond finding Delia Leiter dead in License to Kill and Bond's torture scene in Casino Royale. 007 and 006 were like brothers. They were both orphaned. They loved the ladies and they risked their lives for Queen and country. Bond trusted Trevalyan and he really thought he'd had lost a friend and fellow agent when they went on that mission in 1986. Although Bond is a cold man, he feels nothing and has an emotional side. He is deeply hurt by Alec's betrayal and that he went rogue all because of his parent's death at the hands of the British government. Alec's betrayal is no worst when Vesper Lynd betrayed him. Tracy Riggs was killed and when Felix Leither was tortured and left for dead. Bond is a man with limits. The scene was well written and acted by Brosnan and Bean. Good character development. GoldenEye is one of the best 007 movies ever made.
For those who don't know what James and Alec are talking about, a little history lesson (I'll provide links at the bottom for further reading): Prior to WW2, Russia was in the midst of a bloody civil war. The Bolsheviks on one side (The Red Army), supporters of a free Russia on the other (The White Army). For years after the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Bolsheviks began to annex neighboring countries that were supportive of the communist government. One of these countries was Ukraine. An ethnic group from this country was known as the Cossacks. They were strongly anti-communist and fought a long and bitter fight against the Red Army and Bolshevik government even long after many "peace treaties" were signed. [1] Fast forward to WW2. Stalin is now obviously in power. The Cossacks are still fighting against the Soviets but now their efforts are turning badly in their favor as Stalin is destroying anything in his path thanks to the naive support of the US giving Stalin millions in funds, metals, and ammo supplies so they could fight the Germans. The Cossacks, in an attempt to turn the war around and push back against the Soviets, join up with the Germans to combine their forces. It would ultimately be a futile decision and many who were not recaptured by the Soviets, fled West towards France and Great Britian. Now here is where Alec's story comes in. James notes that Alec's parents were "Lienz Cossacks". Lienz is a city in Austria where the now infamous Yalta confrence [2] took place. The Yalta conference was a meeting between Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Chuchill and Joseph Stalin [3]. You have likely seen a pic of these three before in a history book in school somewhere. During the Yalta conference, Stalin pretty much demanded that to avoid war with the Soviet Union, he demanded the repatriation of 45-50,000 Cossacks back to the Soviet Union. They are called Lienz Cossacks [4] because those who fought for the Germans against the Soviet Union that surrendered to the British were brought to Lienz (a British occupied city at the time) and were forcibly repatriated by the Soviet Union from there. It was easily the most shameful and cowardly thing the allies did during the entire stretch of the war. MI6 at the time believed that Alec was too young to understand what was going on which would prove to be a mistake. He was fully aware of what was happening and knew at that moment he would never forgive the British government for what they did to his family. At 6 years old, he plotted revenge against the British government and did so by joining them to learn all their in's and out's, fake his death by making a deal with a Soviet General in Ourumov in order to carry out his plans. Of course we all know that in the end, his plans are foiled. So, wait, Alec is like 50 plus years old here? That situation doesn't work as well as opposed if this whole plot happened during the early Moore years.
Sean Bean played the best Bond villain in my opinion 🙂.What hurts the most is that he was a friend that James Bond trusted and later turned out to be the mastermind behind everything 😮. What a betrayal for James and shock .
I don't think he necessarily had to have been born around WWII. If I recall, they mention that Alec's parents were survivors of the 1945 massacre and later on the father killed himself and his wife, so it's possible that the murder-suicide took place much later, which would explain Alec's age.
@@William_Sk Yeah, although I think the real reason for this age discrepancy is because the original plot was going to have Alec be Bond's former mentor; not just his old friend. This movie was meant for Timothy Dalton, and it was supposed to come out in the early 90's. Things got held up and Dalton bowed out, which brought a few changes to the story, but I'm glad they kept the Cossack plot point. One of the most unique pieces of real history ever used in a Bond film.
@@luigihoratio5101 Originally he was supposed to be played by an older actor. They asked Anthony Hopkins and Alan Rickman but they said no. ....should've tried for Charles Dance
The whole "Stalin hunted my parents until they killed themselves" thing never made much sense to me since Sean Bean was only 35 or so when he did this. Then I found out they had originally wanted Anthony Hopkins or Alan Rickman to play Trevelyan and it made more sense. He was still one of the best Bond villains though.
i honestly wish 006 didn't die would have been a ongoing villain like Spector. and could far more better idea sequels of him destroying the mi6 government..
“007 loyalty was always to the mission……never to his friend” The contempt in his voice is so painful. And you see/feel how much those words cut into Bond.
From now on, Trevelyan will be considered as a Lienz Cossack. "You knew, didn't you? He's Lienz Cossack" That annoys me a bit. His parents were Lienz Cossack. He was just a kid who suffered the war.
I agree. There's never been another villain in the series who had a personal vendetta with Bond. It's really the most prestigious type of villain in any situation; someone who was once like a soulmate.
Sean Bean ruined me for Bond Villains. After him came Jonathan Pryce in Tomorrow Never Dies, and he spent his performance as media giant Elliot Carver spouting out stupid journalism cliches in scenery-chewing fashion (STOP THE PRESSES! THERE'S NO NEWS LIKE BAD NEWS!) Bean was able to fulfill the Bond villain archetypes while doing something few Bond villains can pull off: be menacing.
This whole movie’s plot hinges on Bonds chance encounter with Xenia racing him in Southern France, if she decided to go out for a drive say the following day when Bond wasn’t there, Janus wouldn’t have aroused the suspicion of MI6. Yes it’s massively contrived, but they could’ve found a better way of showing MI6 were on to Janus
This is different when it comes to 'best friend betrayal.' Alec and James are shown to be the bestest of friends in the intro and his 'death' weighs heavily on Bond's conscience for years. Then when he finally reveals that he's alive, he reveals that he never truly gave a shit and he also hates him for scarring his face.
Alec was already a criminal in the making at the time of his faked death and over the years grew his organization to be the top criminal organization in Russia. Alec had a hatred for England and blamed the British for his parents deaths after they were betrayed by the British government during the 2nd World War. Alec grew to have a hatred of Bond even though they were close friends and partners.
I think he does care about Bond on some level and that's part of why he's so bitter. The line "oh and by the way I did think of asking you to join my little scheme, but somehow I knew... James Bonds loyalty was always to the mission... never to his friend." Conveys that for me. He sounds hurt, not just like a diabolical villain.
He was up for Bond back in "Living Daylights", actually. Funny seeing how his first big role (the Sharpe series) had him playing the Napoleonic Wars' version of James Bond.
Ah I remember watching this scene in the theatres. I was just as surprised as Bond when Alec revealed himself. I'm glad i didn't see the (spoiler) trailer before I saw the film.
Raoul Silva from Skyfall is a wannabe of this guy. Alec Trevelyan is by far, the most untouchable Bond villain to date. And 1:24 the music and the emotion - need more of this in a Bond film.
Andrew St. Clair Well there's that, but I mean the emotion. Craig is too hard as Bond. I get that's how he is in Fleming's novels, but it's gotta be like this - personal, without making it seem like a Jason Bourne film.
Alec Trevelyn was originally supposed to be an older 00 agent then James and be his mentor in original script and have Alec be played by an older actor. producers originally wanted Alan Rickman or Anthony Hopkins to play him back when James Bond role was offered to Timothy Dalton who left the role and it went to Pirece Brosnan. They changed role of Alec to be a younger agent and cast Sean Bean.
Lmao same here. You could also get him on the Train mission before the shutter comes down if you were quick enough. Also, unrelated to the golden gun, if you shot him in the Facility level before Ourumov and his troops stormed the room he'd shoot back at you.

He just can't help himself, can he? Even in moments of life and death, Bond always has the best one-liners.
Why does Trevelyn act as if he is immune to bullets?
Alec: "Oh please James, put it away. It's insulting to- " *BAM!!*
+Serendra Hardu because they would've shot Bond on sight, it's called self preservation from Bond part :v
+MercenaryFox Compare that to the firefights in the dam facility or the archives; he's faced worse odds and won :)
Serendra Hardu Don't know about that, another 00 special agent (not some random soviet soldier) that know you from a long time ago in a dark open area ... i wouldnt take my chances and well shit you saw what happened to 007 once he took aim at trevelyan, right?
Let's assume for a moment that the shot 007 took wasn't a tranquilizer dart ... you see my point?
***** But he had already been aiming at Trevelyn and could have shot him. In that moment, nothing was stopping him from killing Trevelyn.
Then, he lowered his gun, and was only shot when he raised it back up.
Serendra Hardu
Maybe the shock of realizing his best friend and "diseased" partner turned out to be the head of Janus got the best of him, it is a surreal sight after all.
Favorite scene in the entire Bond phenomenon. This is truly the best moment for 007
One of the darkest scenes of the entire series next to Bond finding Delia Leiter dead in License to Kill and Bond's torture scene in Casino Royale.
Kinda felt sorry for Trevelyan in this scene.
For those who don't know what James and Alec are talking about, a little history lesson (I'll provide links at the bottom for further reading):
Prior to WW2, Russia was in the midst of a bloody civil war. [1]
Fast forward to WW2.

Thanks for the research! This is what I came here for
Thank you. Absolutely fascinating.
Load of poo
@@jasonbannon5726 Like you know that stuff.
So, wait, Alec is like 50 plus years old here? That situation doesn't work as well as opposed if this whole plot happened during the early Moore years.
“007’s loyalty was always to the mission and never to his friends”
Let's all be honest. Martin Campbell made the best two James Bond films ever. Goldeneye and Casino Royale.
Sean Bean played the best Bond villain in my opinion 🙂.What hurts the most is that he was a friend that James Bond trusted and later turned out to be the mastermind behind everything 😮. What a betrayal for James and shock .
007 may have won but 006 was right.
Right about?
@@lamarlewis3183 um the government how mi6 is fucked up for what they did. Did u even watch the movie brah
Yes but 006 took his revenge way too far. He was literally willing to murder millions of innocent people.
@@mrbluesky4838 There is no such thing as taking revenge too far. That's why it's revenge and not justice.
@@shanestevens8098 And revenge comes from wrath. There is a reason why wrath is a deadly sin.
One of the best scenes of all the movies I think
That's why they used the Lienz Cossacks story for Janus, meaning he'd have to have been born around WWII even though Sean Bean was born in 1959.
That would make Alec 55 or 56. Damn he held quite a chip on his shoulder (a chip larger than that of the planet Saturn)
@@luigihoratio5101 Originally he was supposed to be played by an older actor. They asked Anthony Hopkins and Alan Rickman but they said no.
....should've tried for Charles Dance
@@ShadowSonic2 that I heard too.
But hey, winners can't be choosers. Still was a good movie.
I grew up with this game, on N64 and ofc this film also!
3:20 she sounds like Chris Tucker haha
Lmao!!
well spotted
Lmao. That had to be dubbed in
loool
The whole "Stalin hunted my parents until they killed themselves" thing never made much sense to me since Sean Bean was only 35 or so when he did this. Then I found out they had originally wanted Anthony Hopkins or Alan Rickman to play Trevelyan and it made more sense. He was still one of the best Bond villains though.
i honestly wish 006 didn't die would have been a ongoing villain like Spector. and could far more better idea sequels of him destroying the mi6 government..
Best Bond ever. Story soundtrack everything
Great scene. Bond deeply hurt over Alec's fake death and betrayal.
Best bond Villan ever
Sean Bean reveals himself to be a the good guy scene pretty much
Shit ya!! Gota luv how all Bond movies are real explosions not just cgi fire 🔥
“007 loyalty was always to the mission……never to his friend”
The contempt in his voice is so painful. And you see/feel how much those words cut into Bond.
As a massive Sean Bean fan I really need to see this film
This is one of the best Bond films. I think Sean Bean was perfect for this role. One of the best Bond villains too.
Darkstar263 He died twice in this film. This scene shows Sean Bean entering with the words, "Back from the dead!"
MonguinAssassin
"You only live twice"
Darth Sygnious
LOL I got that joke!
hahaha nice one!!!
From now on, Trevelyan will be considered as a Lienz Cossack. "You knew, didn't you? He's Lienz Cossack"
That annoys me a bit. His parents were Lienz Cossack. He was just a kid who suffered the war.
"Closing time james...last call"
for England Jamaes
One does not simply give Sean Bean a very short role in a movie.
I agree. There's never been another villain in the series who had a personal vendetta with Bond. It's really the most prestigious type of villain in any situation; someone who was once like a soulmate.
My Favourite Pierce Brosnan 007 Movie. The surprised look on Bond’s face when he discovers his late friend and ally wasn’t really dead.
Whenever this movie comes on I can only think: "Hey, it's that movie they made after that N64 game"
Actually, the game was released in 1997, 2 years after the release of the movie.
Goldeneye was released in November of 95 and the game was released for N64 in August of 97.
Sean Bean ruined me for Bond Villains. After him came Jonathan Pryce in Tomorrow Never Dies, and he spent his performance as media giant Elliot Carver spouting out stupid journalism cliches in scenery-chewing fashion (STOP THE PRESSES! THERE'S NO NEWS LIKE BAD NEWS!) Bean was able to fulfill the Bond villain archetypes while doing something few Bond villains can pull off: be menacing.
brosnan wanted hopkins for that role
Bean said it best: "I was always better."
Pryce's Elliot Carver is more of a scenery chewers than Bean's Alec Treveylan but it still was great. Just more of a funny one.
This film was badass
Goldeneye and TND were Pierce’s best 007 films,
I don't agree, TND was very cheesy and had a terrible villain despite the actor, I think TWINE was the next best film after GoldenEye
@@jankjason TWINE didn't really age well tbh. It's very much a product of it's time.
For Gondor!
For Gondor!
For Gondor!
The north remembers...
Closing time James.. last call.. Boom!!!🔫
i can imagine everyone losing their hearing in cinemas when Natalya is screaming her head off....
RIP headphone users at 3:04
This is different when it comes to 'best friend betrayal.' Alec and James are shown to be the bestest of friends in the intro and his 'death' weighs heavily on Bond's conscience for years.
"It wasnt god that gave me this face, it was u"
He was up for Bond back in "Living Daylights", actually. Funny seeing how his first big role (the Sharpe series) had him playing the Napoleonic Wars' version of James Bond.
Ah I remember watching this scene in the theatres. I was just as surprised as Bond when Alec revealed himself. I'm glad i didn't see the (spoiler) trailer before I saw the film.
Well, "Sean Bean" was the first name in the opening titles.
Music is very touching..!!
Raoul Silva from Skyfall is a wannabe of this guy. Alec Trevelyan is by far, the most untouchable Bond villain to date.
And 1:24 the music and the emotion - need more of this in a Bond film.
About the last things you said the Craig films have none of that in them
Avoozl I wish they did. Which is why I said that. I miss Pierce Brosnan as Bond terribly. lol
TheCommanderBond007 You miss Pierce Brosnan as Bond because of Eric Serra? That makes no sense. Maybe you should be missing Eric Serra.
Andrew St. Clair Well there's that, but I mean the emotion. Craig is too hard as Bond. I get that's how he is in Fleming's novels, but it's gotta be like this - personal, without making it seem like a Jason Bourne film.
TheCommanderBond007 I love the Jason Bourne touch. That's a modern spy thriller to me.
You almost route for Alec after hearing that.
I cannot watch these scenes without seeing the N64 game.
Best Villain of the brosnan era
Put it away James.
WAKE UP!!! MISTER!!! (Screaching) WAKE UP, JAMES!!! WAKE UP!!! Natalya was yelling at
James.
4:16Fun with the pause button, these 2 look happy like there ready to start a family
And in "Licence to Kill" when bond resigns from MI6 in order to get payback for Felix
The things we do for frequent flyer mileage
😂
Pierce was fabulous as bond always ready with wit and coolness ☺️
Natalya Symonova's the greatest of the Bond girls for me. And the funniest too.
Whatever happened to her?
She stayed hot and last i saw was in Reign Of Fire
jeez she roared so loud in vertical limit
Alec Trevelyn was originally supposed to be an older 00 agent then James and be his mentor in original script and have Alec be played by an older actor. producers originally wanted Alan Rickman or Anthony Hopkins to play him back when James Bond role was offered to Timothy Dalton who left the role and it went to Pirece Brosnan. They changed role of Alec to be a younger agent and cast Sean Bean.
That would’ve been an interesting script to be honest
Survive Bond’s time bomb, that’s soldiering. 😂
3:05 now that's an alarm clock.
ALREADY picked it as my WakeUp Alarm
In the game I used to shoot him with a golden gun before he ran off
Cheat mode activated.
Lmao same here. You could also get him on the Train mission before the shutter comes down if you were quick enough. Also, unrelated to the golden gun, if you shot him in the Facility level before Ourumov and his troops stormed the room he'd shoot back at you.
Always got lost in this level
