    Started watching for the foam construction on the trailer, now learning about Tesla. LOL
    I am not intrested in the car but the power of the trailer is definitely a learning experience.
    I'm curious about the durability of your trailer. I would probably be alot harder on the trailer.
    Thank you for some great information.

      They have both been great. I have since dismantled the first version and I used the battery instead as dedicated home energy storage. My T-Rex Camper is still great after lots of miles.

    This is awesome, I just found your channel again after a while, I wanted to see if you have any links to any videos where you show how you parallel these in within the cars, I have a fiat 500e I wanted to try something like this on

      Thank you! Yeah this was a fun test. I was so excited to try this. I am very confident it would work on a Model S. I know the X is different but I am hoping to buy one and try it on that.

    Only person I can think of close enough to you is Rich. Seems you and him can team up on this video and go viral with it. He just put that hitch on his model S and you know he is willing to break it and have some fun putting it back together. Great test. Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you! Yeah we have spoken. He is just really busy with all this popularity he is gaining. I was out there a couple weekends ago for his open house but we barely spoke. Everyone was swarming him at the event. The plan has been to find time to meet up and do this test together. Just hasnt happened yet.

    I personally think that mixing the pack types is not a good idea. The V2 trailer on your RAV is not contributing energy like it should because it's never charged full and the V1 trailer connected to a Tesla and charged full by the Tesla OBC will over-volt the RAV pack because it's only 92S instead of 96S. The V2 trailer behind a Model X, sure, that would be great.

      Neither will be over or low voltaged if thats a word lol. The controller and BMS protect each of the batteries. I heard stuff like this all the time when I started out. Lots of people on forums told me it couldnt be done and I was going to kill my family, but its now been almost 2 years and I have had zero issues (other than me tying to drive further than I am able to)

    Hey James, very interesting video. I'm a little surprised this worked because my understanding is the Model S is very finicky about pre-charge timing, and with nobody in the driver seat the pack should have been disconnected. I recall Jack Ricard being unable to get the Model S battery to pull in even trying different capacitance and resistance combinations to mimic a connected drive unit. I do have a Model S and I'm pretty close by (Owego)...I'd consider some experimentation. I've been wondering about a smaller add-on pack mounted inside the car using a DC-DC, but I assumed the vehicle controller would throw a fit seeing a voltage present before commanded.

      I guess that just makes me better than Ol Jack Rickard. haha Very cool that you are so close! What year is your S? Do you have a trailer hitch?

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  5 років тому

      Im not interested in an onboard add on pack. I looked at it for my Rav EV but decided against it after much research. One of the big reasons for me is that I didnt want to lose the interior space. So thats one reason for the T-Rex. I can take it with me when I need it or leave it home when I dont.

      @@JamesKlafehn I've got a 2014 S with a trailer hitch. I'll agree that in many ways an external pack is superior. I'm a big proponent of modular electronics....for instance I have one common 18650 based pack that can be connected in series/parallel that are used in my electric bikes, lawnmower, solar power system, electric boat, and can even drive my electric truck a little bit with them. I'd love an anderson connector on my Tesla that could be used as both an input and output depending on the situation

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  5 років тому

      jrmead I could definitely do that for you.

    • @davedubreuil
      @davedubreuil 4 роки тому

      @jrmead I think because there is nothing besides James’s additional contactors connected to the Model S HVJB when the vehicle contactors close and complete the specifically timed precharge, everything would go smoothly. If the batteries were paralleled without separation by external contactors the Tesla would refuse to play ball.

    this could be awesome for direct solar charging, normally the cooling system is running while charging and that uses ~400w meaning solar is all wasted in the cooling system

    • @JamesKlafehn
      @JamesKlafehn  4 роки тому

      Direct solar charging? I am doing that too. The battery powers my house. Check out my other videos. Cooling system is rarely on actually.
