  • Back to the workshop again as Ned rehabilitates a poorly Model S 60kWh pack. This module has a failed BMS leading to a dead module and pack, once the 12v has given its all that failed as well so the car was inoperable.
    DriveEV Service to the rescue (Via a towtruck) and the replacement module will see this S giving many more years of emissions free travel around Aotaeroa.

      If the pack has a lot of mile on it (like 100k) more than likely a bms is not going to fix it , wishful thinking. Once the cells start dying on a pack it is a one way trip down the hill

    Thank you for this. I've got an M3 and was thinking that if and when there is a problem with the battery, likely many years from now, there will be shops that will be able to repair or replace the battery much as you can get an ICE engine rebuilt. You are showing that this is already happening.

      HV repairs are not DIYable. We have all the appropriate tools, safety equipment and a very highly qualified engineer doing the work. There is enough potential energy to move 2.5 tons 500km. Once the lid is off the pack that energy can flow through you. Good news if you make a mistake you're unlikely to know about it.

    Thank you for a good video! I have had the warning BMS_u019 for a while now. I changed the 12 volt battery but I still have the same warning. I have had it for a few months. Do you know anything about this?

    Are you able to add more modules to turn this into a 85kwh or 90kwh pack?

    • @driveev441
      @driveev441  8 місяців тому +1

      No the pack does not have the connectors for more modules. A pack swap is viable though as the S was designed with battery swapping in mind. If you are in NZ please contact us to see what we can do for you.

    could you add modules to the pack to make it 100kwh? or would you have to replace the BMS and wires / water lines?

    very interesting so a couple of tiny little caps was the whole issue, I'm guessing its worth reallly closely examing boards before diagnosis, tesla software limits a battery capacity even though the cells are in there.........what the?

      Because they bought the cheaper and inferior model.
      Just like all car seats are the same, but the cables and buttons aren't there for heating seats if you didn't pay for them.
      It's easier to just produce seats with everything in them in one factory.

    cells in parallel cannot be distinguished from each other: therefore there is no indivicual cell level monitoring..........important fact to remember.........its a weakness in ev's not yet resolved.

    does the bms actually measure the voltage of every individual cell?? wouldnt that require a truck load of cables for each module?

    • @NeilvanGeffen
      @NeilvanGeffen 2 місяці тому

      It sure does, but it measures them on each module and then has an isolated comms channel back from the BMB on each module, to the BMS at the end of the battery

    I have read that individual modules are not able to be replaced due to the stringent requirement of the BMS requiring all the modules capacities to be within 1% of each other. If only one module is replaced then it only takes anywhere from a few charges to MAYBE up to a year of charges (if you're very lucky)for a battery imbalance to occur as buying a random module and it having within 1% of the capacity of the others currently in the pack is akin to winning the lottery. According to this individual when that happens you're right back where you started. He is someone who sells whole battery packs and the only people who "back up" his claim also sell whole battery packs. So I'm not sure how honest he is being vs just trying to scare people away from buying modules and into whole pack replacements from him. Can you say in your experience is there any truth to this statement? I am in the US and I have a 2014 Model S that has a single bad module. I'm contemplating just trying a single module replacement but I don't want to spend $500 on another module only to be right back where I am now in less than a year.

    • @NedvanGeffen
      @NedvanGeffen 26 днів тому

      they do need to be capacity matched, yes, but i believe it is possible to start with a higher capacity one and decreasing the capacity by removing individual cell fuses to decrease its capacity. We havent had to deal with that issue (yet) so can't be sure, but thats what it seems others are doing online. There are somne good people in the US working on battery packs, like recell, maybe get in touch with them, they will likely know more from the sheer number of cars they have worked on there vs us in a tiny country like New Zealand!

    What sealant do you use to reseal the battery pack.

    • @NedvanGeffen
      @NedvanGeffen 26 днів тому

      SikaTack or Armourflex, depending on the battery. Be sure to clean up the entire surfaces though as im not sure what is used from the factory, and you dont want to mix adhesives. You can then also paint on some under body sealer around the lid edges like Tesla does on later model batteries
