Is Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town Any GOOD?

- In this Animated review I talk about Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town ,the remake I've been waiting for since the original friends of mineral town for the Gameboy Advanced. However, how does Story of Seasons: FOMT compare to the original? What does it do better? Is it just the same game with a different skin? How does it stack against more modern farming simulation games like Stardew Valley? I go over the major changes from the original FOMT (along with the obligatory explanation of what happened between Marvelous and Natsume) to answer these questions.

try season of Olivie town but maker that make is getting fix still good and not only mayo you can make soy sauce not many game let some other sauce need more to make like barbecue sauce would be good not just Mayo sauce getting moster harvest and hope rune factory 5 to and will be great when my time at Portia 2 come out sometime next year
So, VTea, have you played Rune Factory 5 yet? I've been playing it a lot lately. Not even done with the first in game year yet but I'm already married to Ludmila in my playthrough and a kid will be on the way.
I have and while i think it's "good" and I do enjoy playing it, theres a lot of problems I have with it. (I mean, it has the same gameplay loop as rune factory 4, of course I'm going to enjoy it). Aside from FPS issues, I think the transition to 3D didnt really add much to the franchise and I'd argue it took more away from it since the controls felt really clunky and took a lot of getting used to. I think they could've done a lot more with the 3d envorments, but since they didnt, it kinda makes me question whyd they even bother. On the plus side, despite the envorments and character models looking a bit rough at times, it definately looks a lot more modern (when it isnt running at 20 fps). Deployables are still a pain, combat doesn't feel challenging for the right reasons, animations look stiff, but all in all, it's a rune factory game.
I remember reading the reason why rival marriages were removed was because the Japanese fan base hated it. And I completely understand it. But if it was up to me, I would implement it like this: keep the rival marriages and rival children, but only activate it when you get married first. This,
In my opinion, is the best of both worlds.
I kinda like the (nonsensical) way AP and ToT handled rival marriages by befriending your rival
Or you could've made it like it was in the early Rune Factory games, where you can steal the bride/groom away from their husbands/wives to be, AT the wedding.
@@zombehnashun I don't think Harvest Moon would dare to implement such chaotic feature
I just feel bad for them because they have like a ton of hearts with me because I’m trying to befriend them and they catch feels, but I can only pick one, and then they live alone for 200 years still in love with me. :(
Like excuse me I gave gifts DAILY to all of them to get them to like me. And suddenly my rivals want to to get married all because I stumbled into a conversation between them? I don’t think so! xD
I couldn’t decide between grey and cliff so I sent cliff away during year one by not recommending him the job. Stay single Ann! 🤣
I used to love Elli, but I'm all in on Ann now. (Err, Ran... I guess.)
Enjoyed the video!
OH MY GOD I KNOW THIS PERSON! Also Ann was my first choice, but Cliff was such a good boy, he deserves her! (Love your videos btw, Watched your stuff for years!)
I had a hard time choosing, they're all pretty good. But coincidentally I also decided on Ran. I mean we do have a lot in common, we love food.
I miss her overalls ;
@@vtea Me too :c
First Gray's hat, then Cliff's ponytail, and now Ran/Ann's overalls TT o TT
@@Haleysama12 and Duke's Count Dracula skunk stripe hair! Ok, nobody missed that.
The biggest redesign crime is Zack. My poor beautiful Zac
RIP zach, he just looks goofy now
But Won (Huang) looks good
*they also got rid of his stereotype*
He was Zaddy
They should’ve kept his og design and make him marriageable tbh.
My heart honestly hurt when they said no more rivals I liked that mechanic. I love the idea that the towns people in growning and evolving because honestly all they had to do was lock the rival scene to activate after you married your preferred character and rename the old rival scenes into villager romance events.
It was really tragic for me too... makes the whole town feel less organic now... it also makes me sad Cliff cant get together with Ann (they're so cute together!)
I'll never forgive the Japanese!!!
I kinda hated that they didn’t let us make food without a recipe :/ and that time goes by a bit faster. Also the inventory is pretty large, but WHERE IS MY BASKET!! And I wanna start with my doge too 3:
Basket was kinda rendered unless because you can stuff so much stuff in your inventory. I do admit, making recipes instantly is easier, but it doesn't feel as rewarding as experimenting and adding additional stuff. Also the point about time being faster, I actually had a section of the video where I talked about that, but while getting the footage to do a comparison, I discovered there wasn't that big of a difference (maybe it was an emulation issue), but regardless, when I go through my "daily routine" I'm usually in bed by 6pm anyways, so time being faster isnt really an issue. What is an issue is a lack of content to fill up the rest of that day.
@@vtea poop 0
Does it go faster tho? From what I timed it runs at exactly the Back to Nature speed (6s = 10min). Didn't spend much if any time on the GBA original Friends of Mineral Town tho.
This BtN speed made the transition to that game so much more natural to me, everything kept happening at the same pace
@@Kalvinjj good to hear that, i was worried when i heard about the time progression thing
@@binal-flecki2387 I heard it was 2x as fast but never seemed like it
The only problem I have with the newest Friends of Mineral Town...
These goddamn animals takes literal generations to love me!!!!
Sorry, cant relate on the basis that I still have no animals :X (does it actually take that long?)
@@vtea lol yes it does. especially animals that you bought (not form breed). + also i hate the fact that we cant 'pick up' them lol
@@kyuu6985 Gone are the days of tossing chickens around to increase their affection.
But you get a boost if you feed by hand instead of use feeder, plus at least you never lose affection to illness!
@@dbclass4075 bahaha those chickens definitely had Stockholm's.
The NPC dads definitely got the short end of the stick when it comes to redesigns. Their wives look real fresh though. Also I understand the redesigns for most but I too wish they at least kept some of the more iconic parts like Gray's hat and Cliff's ponytail =7= .
Feel the same :/
In the GBA version, I would go for Cliff every time. Even when I'd tell myself to try and go for someone different I just couldn't. In the switch version he was...much more underwhelming and his redesign has a huge part to do with it
If only they kept the OG designs and added more dialogue, that's all I'd ever want
Gray could have kept a hat indeed, but yeah it was long overdue removing that dumb UMA text, "uma" means horse in Japanese, which is explained by his previous job in HM64, but had jack all to do with a blacksmith apprentice.
The one I felt the most was Manna tho, damn she was waifu material originally, but now she looks so damn weird... The grape earrings look cute tho and fitting, if not a bit obvious/forced.
@vtea it's sad cause they could get sued doing that. Maybe a modder might one day do that.
I played a few hundred hrs on Harvest Moon: BTN, and played a few thousand hrs on Stardew Valley, and I felt exactly the same. I was happy to play the remake version, but they could have improved at least some. Art style... I still wish for old ones, but I can get used to it. But, the daily work is pretty much water crops, go to the mountain to recover energy and forage, drop gifts to ladies and sleep over and over. I loved it when it came out nearly 20 years ago, and still think it's a great game. But, I will go back to Stardew Valley a lot earlier than I expected.
Yea :/ such a missed opportunity to add additional content, but at least I got to relive one of my favorite childhood games.
@@vtea exactly, it would have been so easy to add content, especially since its present in their OLDER games! how you gonna remove fertilizer, clothes crafting, greenhouse, fish pond, mushrooms, tea trees, hair salon!?
I HATE that they removed the rival marriages, I was getting really into the game and when I found that out. It was like a kick to the gut, what’s the point of playing and putting all this time in if the world if it’s always going to stay the same. Of course I kept playing but it put a bad taste in my mouth really, that’s one of the issues I’ve always had with Stardew, man I can rant about this for days
Feels the same... it's one of the things that made those older games unique... its such a tease that they include a few of the rival events, but dont go through with them!
Im slow on these games so i always go for the (ironically) 'secret' barchelott because i know i don't suffer the problem of seeing a rival event on my future-husband also the challenge is fun, i like seeing everybody marry while i romance my beloved, is sad i will not see everybody married here on this new game
Completely agree with that feeling! I usually romance really fast, I wish I would slow down and see everyone else's relationships progress as well.
They could have just adjusted rival marriage to like 5 or 6 years for those casual laid back players. Or rival events could continue after you're married or something. I agree that the removal of rival marriage is a bad move.
also no greenhouse, doghouse, or crib. and the renovations are super lame and limited. How did they go backwards with renovations? Bathroom is literally just a door now, not even visible form the outside. Oh, also animals are invincible. so no more worrying about typhoons, in fact its more efficient to abandon your animals once they max hearts. Honestly, kinda let down after sinking in 50 hours to see all thats missing.
I married Cliff-- his redesign is super cute, but also it felt like he had the most convincing narrative of them all. He felt like the strongest and most dynamic character where the others *ahem brandon* are just boring archetypes
He's the only character that felt you had any "influence" over and I think more characters need to have his level of depth!
Brandon had potential tho his design is kinda slick but unfortunately his personality is.....blach
To me, a routine is a good thing due to my autism. I found Stardew Valley a bit overwhelming and intimidating how PRECISE people tell you to play to win the main story mode. I dunno, might just be me ;#;
Might give Stardew Valley another shot, I didn't play it for long on Steam, I suck at keyboard controls anyways. Cause the game does look like fun, it's just the overwhelming feeling and how some people tell you what's a must to do ;#;
I mean everyone's different, and different games appeal to people with different tastes. Stardew is one of my favorites, but it's not for everyone, no need to force yourself! If anything, stardew doesn't have a time limit, just play the way you want to play and enjoy yourself because that's what videogames are for
same here, except different reasons. I also have Autism. Well, actually, ASD. With me, the 3 harvest moon games I could put all my time into were DS/DS Cute, Animal Parade... and Grand Bazaar for quite some time. With those three games, I put a lot more of my time into them because I had one, very specific goal. And it was always get married as fast as possible... Catch me with Skye, the wizard, and Amir. Wizard was married on the first year, Skye took 3 years, and Amir? ... technically it was the same as Skye, but that's just because I kind of cheated at that age. Of the three, Gale, the wizard, was the most interesting. And I loved Animal Parade BECAUSE it held my hand.
okay, starting to see why I like the newer pokemon games a lot more than other people do... I actually prefer games that give you very direct instructions on where to go and what to do, over just plopping you in one spot and struggling to figure out what you're MEANT to do. Like, I knew overall what I was MEANT to do in Stardew Valley, but it wasn't very much instruction and I never did the community center.
I loathe that they removed rival marriages ): I was so excited for that to come back. Sad thing is if they made them a DLC you could activate when you make a character, I would probably buy it
Same, but I'd probably not buy it out of spite since it's something that really should've been apart of the base game... it kinda ruined the integrity of the original for me sadly...
Its a lot of fun definetly worth it and fun for people that want to see where Stardew Valley came from. Game seems outdated because it is an old game just with a reskin and some nice extra features.
I think it would have been a great opportunity for them to fix what was wrong with the original FOMT (lack of content), but instead I think they leaned too hard into the nostalgia side. But hey, Story of seasons pioneers of olive town looks really promising!
@@vtea Olive town looks great, my hopes are sky high, ready to be dropped on its head but hey still excited.
Just got new about the amount of character customization, it looks really good and looking forward to it! Only thing that worries me at the moment is how the gameplay/pacing will be like...
Karen was my HM forever girl until the remake, the original Karen design had so much cool girl attitude but was very approachable similar to Wendy from gravity falls.
This review is pretty cute and informed! Good job!
Awww thank you!
people actually hate on magical melody because of the art style lmao
It's actually as polarizing as the models in FOMT tbh, but I see A LOT of people defending the model design in Magical Melody, yet condemning FOMT (probably because FOMT is a remake)
Something that should be easy and a great way to keep rival marriage: Lock the last rival heartevent so they can ONLY happen after you married. So you get your partner without problems but you will still see the other villagers marry. No casual player gets their fave taken from them but things still keep on happening in the village. I would have loved to see this
This fixes the "time limit" issue for casual players, but the removal of the rival marriage system was mainly due to people being upset that the other bachelors/bachelorettes marrying eachother (apparently just one isnt enough for them). So sad to see it go, the remake deserved better!
I can't believe you only have 6k subscribers. This is actually a good and entertaining review. I've played a lot of Harvest Moon games and recently picked up SOS. The redesigns are hit or miss but overall it feels better than the original.
I married Popuri on the original but now I'm split between Popuri, Marie, Elli and Ran.
I'm glad you liked it! Kinda validates the amount of hours that went into making it :'D
will you review Rune Factory 4 Special? or do a video reviewing other farming sims?
Stardew Valley deserves it's own video :3
I hated that they removed the rival marriages cause it gave some longevity to the game after you get married. I always enjoyed working on the heart events to see everyone getting with someone. Now there is not a whole lot to do. The NPCs are locked in limbo of generic never changing dialogues, the world feels frozen.
Married Won/Huang btw :D; which makes everyone being frozen in undeveloped limbo even worse lol I do enjoy that they gave Won a glow up and he had an actual marriage portrait + better dialogue in general.
Won's redesign was one of the best in my opinion. Really turned him into an actual bachelor instead of a walking Asian stereotype (although I do admit he rocked the character as the stereotype)
@@vtea Yeah, I married him in the GBA version too and he was pretty funny guy but the glow up was on point so I felt especially spoiled in the remake. :D They also seemed to have cut some of the more sad events, like Gotz saving you during a blizzard and mentioning his family died in one. I think they removed May running away to the harbor cause she thinks of her mother too. At least I don't recall triggering it at all.
So I've been a fan of Harvest Moon for a long while, but my first game in the series was DS. Unfortunately I never got hooked to FoMT despite trying it, so I went ahead and decided the remake was a perfect chance to give it a shot. And holy crap I sank 200 hours in it. I vastly agree with the whole video, but as someone without nostalgia for the original, I'll say I love the redesigns. I love me some cute 2D waifus and Popuri was just too cute now. I do agree characters needed more regular dialogues though, but they all have new events and I'm very hapy I watched almost all of them before I stopped playing. Yes I even dated everyone at once just so I could see every heart event in the game, and I loved the charm of these characters. Flawed game, but super cute and pretty and charming.
The game does have its merits and the game overall is pretty polarizing... some hate it just for its aesthetics alone, some people enjoy all the QoL.
I romanced every girl then I decided who to marry, so I pretty much cut the guys out of getting married
Lmao, not like they had the option to marry someone in the SoS version
Nice review, but I think you could have mentioned the heart system with animals, which for me was a very big downgrade compared to the original, because animals have a limit of affection with you even if you spend all the time with them. The game forces you to breed the animal so that his son will increase the limiter, but it belittles your old animal that should like you more, does not make sense. It is very sad to know that your animal that has been with you since the beginning will not reach the best levels of production. Sorry for my english, i'm using google translate.
Woah! That's pretty lame, imagine having an animal from day 1 and not being able to reach max hearts with it. Thanks for the comment btw! Would have never known this because I usually dont raise animals in farming sims.
Ugh yes!! I also hate that about Pioneers of Olive Town!! The original A Wonderful Life let you get maximum hearts and it was so neat to keep your first cow forever
FIX THE SMALL BED NEXT TO THE BIG BED
LMAO, YES
I do just want to point out, as someone who's first game was HMDS, The cave system in stardew is way more similar to that one. The holes were littered all around and it was sooo easy to faint due to falling through too many, There were some mobs you could fight (nowhere near stardew but still, there was combat), and there was a cave princess who you could marry.
I haven't decided yet 😕 feels like I need to get to know them all over again. Doesn't have that spark like the first time I met Eli. (Best girl for me btw)

The real jokes are always at the end! Thanks for sticking till the end :3
I haven't played this or the original, so what exactly is wrong with Rick? Designwise I found him to be one of the most appealing characters, lol
He hates kai for almost no reason and is pretty vocal about it. Kais coincidentally also the only one in town with tan skin, which might make him prejudice. But overall he's just really overprotective and overbearing which comes off as annoying.
@@vtea he's super controlling of his sis yeah it's creepy lmao
@@vtea BRO you should play coral island when it's out IM SO EXCITED FOR IT
As a big fan of 64, I very much appreciate the redesigns. I played FoMT a lot back in the day too, but it never sat right with me that all these essentially new characters were wearing the skins of the ones I knew and loved from 64. Gray could've still had a hat, though.
RIP grey's hat :/
Ngl but mining is my favorite part of these games. It's unhealthy how much time I spent in those caverns.
The town map in GBA version also does tells the schedule of shops, except as you said, not intuitive (press A).
Thanks for great review!
my husbando is doctor, I mean, look at his new design. He iS HOT
rip the circle thing on his head tho... how else am I supposed to tell that he's a doctor (you know besides his name)
I kinda miss the eyebrows though. Different strokes for different folks, y'know.
I really like the new character designs overall, and I felt like a lot of the marriage candidates had a big glow-up (I felt about the same about the old and new designs for Karen and Ann/Ran). I did hate Jennifer, because she was so preachy about harmony, etc, but at the same time so judgmental, especially at first. I also liked Sasha, Manna, and Anna's, Basil's, and especially Huang's new designs, but was very sad about Zack and Carter, who went from hot to weird-looking.
I felt like they could have kept stuck to the original designs a little closer (ex: Ann's overalls, Grey's Hat), also I think Carter looks to uninspired and generic looking
This was a great video, I was surprised not to see you touch base on the marriage candidates opening to both genders.
Regardless, my favourite to marry is definitely Ellie 100% though in Magical Melody (hoping there is a remake of that oml) I always loved Jamie through the rivalry and the possibility of marriage regardless of your starting gender.
AIGHT, I actually realized that point too late into making the video to mention it. Truth be told, I honestly just forgot because it feels so (standard?) in 2020 for you being able to marry both genders in other farming sim games.
I always like to say that Stardew Valley is everything I love about FoMT, but basically perfected.
Only exception is probably rival marriages and horse racing festival, I wish Stardew had those.
I'm currently playing FoMT for the first time, and also only now learning about all the controversy about Natsume. The only HM games I've played are 64, DS, and now FoMT. Sucks to hear what happened between Marvelous and Natsume. I'm currently trying to romance Karen. She just seems like the fun party girl. I'll definitely be picking up a copy of this remake, though.
Why does no one ever mention the gay you can do now?
I WANTED TO BE FIRST DAMN
SHOULDA BEEN THE SPEED *KACHOW*
Also imo, I like this Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town more than Stardew Valley because it doesn't overwhelm me with too much options, I would say. It's one of those drop in, drop out kind of game compared to how Stardew Valley really has so many things to do haha.
It is a tad too expensive though if I were to be honest.
Oh shoot, thats a pretty good point I forgot to mention in the video... why are farming simulation games the same price as AAA titles? Like honestly if this game was $30, I would consider it really good for it's price (hey thats the same price as a gba cart, what a coincidence)
@@vtea YEAH THAT'S A GOOD IDEA
PRICE IT LIKE A GBA GAME FOR MORE OF THAT NOSTALGIA POINTS FAM
Im probably going to pick up this game purely to relive the nostalgia for Back to Nature, my favorite HM game ever. And Im sure by comparisson it's not as good as Stardew Valley, but Im totally fine with that. They are two different games, with this game being the main focus of your farm, with Stardew Valley focusing more on your overall interacting with the town (imho).
In that case, I'm sure you would love it!
I love the remake, but Carter looks like an jrpg class.
Yea, his design really doesn't fit with the rest of the town...
@@vtea I like his old look. Kai's redesign looks great. So does Cliff's. I really liked Huang's new look, since his old look was.. yeah...
I miss the old translation errors. RIP Hing Rodcopper. I hope you are fishing for fishing in heaven.
It's all fun and games until Natsume messes up some code and you cant marry the harvest goddess anymore
Have you watch the story of season: pioneer of olive town trailer? Im pretty much dissapointed with the lack of character potraits and the chibification but i know im still gonna play it when it release :)) i just hope they can make a game that looks like story of season: trio of towns.
I have and the lack of portraits is scary to me because the animations for the characters look a bit lackluster... that being said the gameplay aspect of it excites me
“That god damn forsaken middle tile” Yeah, same sentiments
I think the reason why they remove the rival marriage is cuz it becomes an issue before with lots of jp fans complaining about the girls getting married to someone else. They don't like the time limit so they decided to remove it and get rid of competition.
People have thought of a very simple solution to lock the rival marriages until after the player gets married, would solve the issue of a time limit and the ONE person you like marrying someone else (honestly picking more than one is just greedy)
@@vtea Imho Animal Parade and Tree of Tranquility handled the rival system perfectly, even if it doesn't make sense

Also, I’m pretty sure the mine drop holes were done in HM: DS Cute... or at least in some HM game prior to Stardew Valley’s release
Do you play rune factory? I asked before I got to the end lol. But a vid of that would be cool.
Thanks for this!! Ended up just buying it since im a long time Harvest Moon fan, I was curious as of why it's called "Story of Seasons" instead of Harvest Moon and NOW IT MAKES SENSE!

Yoo. I love these animation/game reviews. Harvest Moon/ Story of Seasons was my childhood. I loved those game with my whole heart. I remember turning and off and on back in the day to get my preferred baby gender. Keep up the good work. This review was really good. Very detailed.
Aww thanks! I love making these videos and I'm glad you enjoyed it as well!
What i find good about this game is that it plays and feels like a good gateway/starting game for some trying out these types of games and the series as a whole. Not as tedious as the original, not that bad gameplay, not that bad graphic style, etc. Its a great first game,
Completely agree! This game would be a 100% recommend to a new player to farming sim games, although I beilive that just because it's less tedious, that doesn't make it strictly better. Idk, theres just a certain charm the orginal has with its inherent clunky-ness.
i'd say it's still a good game...another great game by Marvelous.....speaking of which, please play rune factory...particularly the 3rd or 4th one, they are in my opinion the best farming simulator games and I say are very underated.
im literally waiting for Rune factory 5
Loved this review! I couldn't ever possibly afford any newer game, so it's cool to watch someone who loves HM as much as me review this one. I'd really love to hear you talk about the DS Rune Factory games, because 1, 2 and 3 are some of my all time favorites
I love rune factory 2, and I might do a rune factory 5 video that tells about the others

LMAO someone call child services
I'm pretty sure that Harvest Moon DS/DS Cute actually did the falling through holes thing in the mines long before Stardew Valley did.
Apart from looking for the legendary sword in the the second mine or doing Keira's heart events in the third it's mostly the same deal every time you visit though.
I completely agree that removing rival marriages in future games was kind of pointless removing that feeling of the town progressing around you.
Might be worth checking out DS/DS Cute and linking it with Friends of Mineral Town through the GBA slot on the DS to get the bachelor/bachelorettes from Mineral Town and extra events.

I bought it day one. I maybe maybe maybe "played" 2 hours. Not even sexy Doctor can make it fun for me when i could be playing stardew valley +mods.
Stardew valley is literally ruining every single farming sim game for me (because it's so good). On one hand its gotten to the point where I'm kinda forced to review farming sim games in a vacuum and just pretend stardew doesn't exist, but on the other hand, why cant these established gaming companies put out a farming sim game that can compete with stardew? Its litterally just one guy vs an actual game dev studio.
A blessing from the skies :^DD
AIGHT GUYS, WRAP IT UP. THIS GUYS FIRST
That damn middle tile...
Ugh hate that😭😭
i usually marry popuri, even though i always plan on marrying Karen so then Rick has no one. in the og (which i sgot last month, im real late to the party-) I was gonna marry Karen and get Popuri and Kai together to make Rick angry because he is a son of a bitch but I'm gonna be marrying Popuri bc shes cute
I always love imagining rick being mad at my character for marrying his sister
I think its a 6/10. I think it was so disappointing for me because I'd never played the original, I grew up on the Harvest Moon DS (+Cute), Tree of Tranquillity and Animal Parade (which I still argue is the best in the series), so I lacked the nostalgia factor. I think this coupled with the fact that im a big story/character player, I found the game lacking and only played around 15-20hrs before I got bored. I don't think its a bad game, it just wasn't made for a player like me (has no nostalgia for it, likes story and character building).
Haven't the drop down holes been in the series since Harvest Moon DS? New to Friends of Mineral Town but not new to the Harvest Moon series.
Honestly I loved this remake. It would have been nice to have more dialogue from the characters, as that was the only part of the game that started to nag at me after a while, but overall I had very few complaints.
Edit: I did hate that they took the Rival Marriages out, that's something I have really been missing in newer games
Also I can't believe it had a $50 price tag in the US, it was only £32.99 here.
Maybe because i played this game as a kid, but i kinda like how cryptic this game tend to be by not giving you much info. I had to memorize what time stores open/closed, the character schedules, up until i still memorized it. i didnt need to look up what day the supermarket/clinic/forge closed, so I didn’t need to walk all the way to town. it stays in the back of my head..
Also yea while i kinda don’t mind them getting rid of the rival marriages in the new Bkj/sos games, i just wished they kept it in this remake, the one that started it all (i know theres 64, but its pretty much the same characters), but of course, cant have the fandom be butthurt
wow this video helped me a lot to see how the new remake goes so thank you! I'm a harvest moon btn fan myself and the detail notes on character design and the rival marriage is so helpful. personally I also loved that they had rival marriages in the original, it makes it not boring for me and also motivates me to progress through the romance. it also makes the relationship more meaningful in a way(?) if that makes any sense. some farming sim games has a lot (and i mean A LOT) of romanceable characters but the depth this rival marriage system gives--which they don't have--just kinda makes the experience bland overall.
ps: totally felt the feeling bad for rivals part, i am emotionally attached to all them (and yes except rick. karen deserves way better) i even had idk how many saves just to keep cliff from leaving the town damn that boy got a grip on me
Thanks for the comment and validating my hate for rick :D
I love this artstyle. I also liked the controversial BDSP artstyle though which looks similar
YES! #RICKHATEGANG! I was always a Karen man myself, but her redesign lost her cute little brunette/blond thing, and for some reason the flower child Jennifer intrigued me. (I know, I'm a late bloomer in the comments)
This was an amazing video and explained a lot! Thank you!
I grew up on the gameboy MfOmT, and played it so many times... the remake is awesome, but I'm just not a fan of the walking animation during cutscenes. Seems... eh, but I love everything else. I loved Magical Melody and didn't mind the characters, just wished they had a sprint button. xD I hope we get a remake of that!
Other than that, as much as I love farming games... Stardew Valley wasn't interesting to me. I did not get harvest moon vibes from it at all, and didn't like the events in the game, the marriage candidates and so on. Sorry to hate on it, but I'm also not a fan of mouse clicking games either.
Thanks for watching! The characters/events are probably the weakest part of stardew and it definitely has its flaws, s no worries if it's not your cup of tea!
I heard that the Japanese audience didn't like the fact that the rival ends up forever alone after you marry someone.
You are correct! Still, such a small portion of their community to listen to in that aspect...
@@vtea A Japanese company will listen to Japanese players above all else.
Idk, I always assumed it was decently popular here in the west as well, or at least we had some sort of influence, guess not
@@vtea That's how Japanese companies are, they could be very popular in the west but they'll always prioritize their Japanese audience (which stills being their main audience)
And even knowing this I HATE it, rival marriage is one of my favorite parts of this games (and I also don't get why indie farming games never have this feature) as a kid I was always obsessed with getting my friends married. I remember wanting to marry Gray as a kid in MFOMT, but ended up changing my mind after seeing how cute his event with Mary were, but I guess they were also trying to avoid this.
@@babithehuman2505 I always thought Ann and cliff were cute together and it makes me upset to see they'll never get together :/ For a game based solely on nostalgia, that aspect was lost.
2 main reason why i stop playin this trash game; 1. Time flies too damn fast 2. NPCs are boring, dialogue are repetitive
Stardew valley better.
This is completely unrelated, but I just want to say that the girls in story of two towns are fcking great
Aww thanks! And a lot of Marvelous's designs are generally good, two towns was great
People are strange. At the same time, people want their remake game kept exactly the same so that they can enjoy it the same way when they are kids. But the other hand they still expect something new or different otherwise they call it boring or under expectation. Very interesting
Honestly instead of a remake, I wouldve preferred an expansion. Keep the old gba sprites, the designs , just add more to mineral town and add QoL changes.
They nerfed my ELLI , NOOOOOOOOO. How dare you Marvelous
I perfer her previous design more, a lot more sweet/cute
@@vtea bro i feel you bruh
36000 seconds is 10 hours. If it'd probably take two real world days or maybe a day and a half to stay married for 50 years. Like It took me, 8ish hours to marry Cliff and build my money and materials up to even upgrade my house (and everything in it). It took that long because I wasn't trying to do everything, I was just going through the motions of slowly upgrading the tools I used most, foraging a bit, taking care of crops and animals, making friends with Gotz (so he can be happy enough to continue upgrading my house as needed), and wooing Cliff.
I think the reason of art style and other things are because they are making it more child friendly. It means they wanna hook the kids now not we teens and adults :
idk it just seems... weird? Because the only people who'd probably buy this game are people who have already played it and want it for nostalgia. No way a kid is gonna drop 50+ bucks for this game.
@@vtea dude- how much? i-- didn't know how much it was?! then i understand your points and imma cry at the corner with these realizations.
Honestly this game would be perfectly priced at like 15-20$
@@vtea and that's a good start for kids i think, i mean they could be potential loyal fans in the future if they started at the lower price considering it looks like for kids.
I'm sad they removed tomato festival, I think the GBA version also did not have it. That was my favorite festival back then at BTN
What happened to Carter??? He was suppose to look German now he looks Asian
He now looks like your standard RPG Cleric
Drop down holes were implemented in Harvest moon tree of tranquility back in the early 2000s wii era
Edit: Also toxic gases were in that game, sometimes the gases sped you up or slowed you down. Often the gases would deplete your stamina or make you temporarily blind. The pitfalls eould either drop you down multiple levels or possibly shoot you up floors.
I know they've been implimented in other installments of the series, and it is a massive improvement over mineral town's version of the mines. But I think it's sad they chose to "preserve" the original than to make the mines more complex/intresting like in those other games.
@@vtea I agree. Your comments on the villagers struck home.
That was the case for Magical Melody as well, so it predated even the wii era (although I recognise that wasn’t his main complaint)
@@vtea 10:53 we...had that (as you showed) in BTN.
Without saving too! _leaves basket inside_
Can you try making a video
If Stardew Valley multiplayer game is good or not
(◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
I'll give you a fast version, it is amazing but no one wants to play with me because I keep accidently crashing the server in the mines :/
@@vtea oh...xD
I know it is quite late to leave a comment like this on this video. The drop holes in the mines were actually used before Stardew Valley became a thing back during the DS era of Harvest Moon games in particular the DS remake of a Wonderful Life - Harvest Moon DS. Outside of me just being nitpicky to be nitpicky, the review was great~ I do agree that the remake relied too much on nostalgia and didn't take enough risks with updating the world itself.
Oh dw I was well aware of that fact while making the video. In fact, HM:DS was one of the main games that inspired Stardew *don't quote me on that, I just read it somewhere*
I feel that I should point out that the 'new events' you praised them for adding were actually added in More Friends of Mineral Town
There was a version of the script where I did give it mention, but never doing a "full" playthrough of more friends, I didnt know to what extent the new events were (I didnt know there was this many until after making the video). But as a guy, it makes sense that I (and many others) wouldn't play the "girl" version of the game. I'll be completely honest though, they totally could have half assed it and only included the events from Fomt instead of both Fomt and MFomt, so they still deserve a little bit of praise there.
Wow okay so this was the best video I've seen on this game :') do you play Rune factory?
Aww! Thank you :3 (also I do play rune factory!!)
@@vtea sweet! When RF5 comes out will you do a review?
I'm considering it, like all my reviews it's probably gonna be late because I'll be too busy playing it >_
I still prefer this over Harvest moon purely because the art is better to me and the character designs are more fun
Most are really good modern designs of the characters, some not so much...
This is my first time watching your Channel I like your content BUT YOU DONT MY BOI RICK LIKE THAT HES JUST AN OVER PROTECTIVE BROTHER WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THERE DAD LEFT THEM! ok ok Great channel 🥰🥰🥰
Hey thanks for the comment and I appricate you watching. BUT RICK IS SO RUDE TO KAI, MY BOI DOESNT DESERVE THE DISRESPECT, HE GETS WHAT HE GIVES
atleast the dlc for the extra clothing isn't super expensive like some games Im talking about you Fortnite
Rare case of "If it doesnt broke, dont fixed it".
I'll take it as is.
OG mineral town did have it's flaws though, that being a general lack of content. Don't get me wrong, its fun for what it's worth, but I think they could have done better with minor additions (like expanded character dialog). In the remake, since they made the game overall easier with the new inventory changes, they kinda exacerbated the issue by having players play the game at a faster pace without adding more content to pad out the game.
I could've mine bitcoin instead of wasting my time looking for alexandrite.
I didn’t really like this game. The character models creeped me out... I hated how I clicked on something and it said “chair” or “table”. The game felt unpolished :/ it didn’t have the same sweat and tears stardew had. But I hope “olive town” is better...!
No farming sim game will have as much blood sweat and tears as stardew... also SoS:Fomt did feel lazy to me
I really like your Harvest Moon videos. They were also a huge part of my childhood. Out of curiosity, are you going to cover Song of Seasons:Olive Town?
If people like you keep requesting I do, then I gotta! Also glad to know you enjoyed the video, really keeps me going!
@@vtea glad to help share the smile you put on my face, man 💜 Your work is great. Best of luck in all yourendeavors, and may 2021 be kind to you and yours.
I'm having a great time with this game. It's just #notmyMineralTown. I actually still prefer Back to Nature to this day, and probably always will. But, I don't think the point of this game was to replace the original. At least it plays great, and is on the Switch.
I mean, if you took someone from today's modern gaming and made them play any of the older HM games, I doubt they would continue playing due to how "slow paced" it feels. Thus, in the FOMT remake, I suspect they had to make it easier (invent slots, easier mines, no rival marriages). However just changing the tedious stuff doesn't really fix the inherit problems those games had. In fact, I think it was detrimental in SoS:FOMT's case because it kind of sped up the pace of the game until there was nothing to progress towards, which kind of exacerbated FOMT's main flaw (which is a lack of meaningful content in my humble opinion).
@@vtea That's probably true, and I agree that making things easier doesn't make for better content. It's also probably true that it exacerbates the game's flaws. I still think this remake is a technically better game for the most part. Most of my gripes are purely subjective, but I do miss the original character appearances and names (where applicable). It also seems that some of their personalities have been changed, such as Gray now being much more agreeable and complaining a lot less. I actually have the means to go back and play both Back to Nature and Friends of Mineral Town though. For the nostalgia factor, nothing can top the originals, so I'm making a point of enjoying as much of the new content as possible in this remake. I don't know why I need angora rabbits, but sure. I'm not going for hippie broad in my initial playthrough, mind you. Maybe that's something to consider later on.
Yea I feel the same way, really wished they stuck with the old designs. Everything else is pretty spot on, so it just seems like a weird choice to redesign them...
What I find honestly nothing short of baffling is that the footstep sounds are that loud and annoying. Dozens of Japanese people who worked over the course of years on this game, all of them with some sort of graduation, passion for the media, and (probably) common sense. Yet nobody ever once said: "Uhm, guys, aren't the footstep sounds annoying af? We seriously can't release the game like this..."
Really wanted to make a point of this in the video, but it felt so insignificant (yet obvious) to actually talk about it. Shortcuts were definately made while making this remake and it really plays into how much I want an actual modernization of this game rather than a half hearted remaster.
suprised you didnt mention Rune factory
The only other farming sim game of this kind I've played is _Harvest Moon: Lighthouse of Hope._ I had this one recommended to me shortly after, so I downloaded it on sale. No regrets.
OH, in that case you should see my first video that is on Harvest Moon: Light of hope
@@vtea I double checked to be sure, but I saw it back when I first got the game, as well. Hehehe.
I'm one of the weirdos who really enjoyed that game, and I still like it for what it is, but I admit this game is more immersive. _Lighthouse of Hope_ has Edmond, and I suppose that's what made it so good. XD
Nah They added Battle Mechanics in HM DS which Didn't received well
So maybe they just left it alone?
Well i mean they could add more ores or More Valuables but there's already a variety of them and adding more just seems meaningless.
But since its a remakes i think they just wanna Stay as faithful as possible while Adding some minor Tweaks.
My first HM game was Save the Homeland and I *loved it to bits*. The second was A Wonderful Life Special Edition, and I almost quit the series until my friend insisted there were other, better games, and introduced me to both HM DS and HM Friends of Mineral Town, and I've been a huge fan since.
I really like the remake, especially with the new cow options. Animal Parade and Save the Homeland are still my favorites, but~ X3 And my favorite candidates were always between Gray and Marie, both original and remake. I also liked Karen and Kai, but only their original designs.
I wish i could watch this but as a deaf viewer i cant. Captions would be great
Growing up, Harvest moon DS was one of my favorite games. I got light of hope for switch knowing it was going to be a rip off. I’ve been wanting to get this one so I appreciate the review!
Omg I love your content. It's so cuuuuuuute
Cool video man! but I just wanted to say that falling down fking holes wasn't new or stolen/copied/inspired by Stardew Valley, you can actually fall down fking holes just by walking on the mines on Harvest Moon DS
Well aware of this actually, just wanted to poke fun at the sudden inclusion in the remake since the original didnt have it
@@vtea Ohhh, makes sense, so it was only for the joke... Because the original Harvest Moon DS was made by Marvelous too ♥
