Again would like to thank the Summon Night Community Discord for their continued work on the translation of the third game. Here's the link if you guys want to check on their current progress or just talk about Summon Night! discord.gg/2FMCTs8
Man I feel you, I was the only kid in my school to own a GBA and only when emulation became a thing that I met other people who want to talk about the GBA games. But I have never found someone else who knows about Summon Night Swordcraft Story. And it was the same for a lot of games that are now called "GBA classics": Golden Sun, Mario and Luigi: SS, Tactics Ogre: KoL, FFTA, and LoZ:MC. edit: forgot Yggdra Union and Riviera, two games that introduced me to ATLUS and eventually to the SMT series. Seeing your video got me into some deep nostalgia mode :D. Maybe I should finish my 3DS and Switch backlogs before trying out some GBA games again. XD
I feel as if a lot of people have played this game through emulation, but no one ever brings up to a discussion on GBA games. I'm glad theres other people who've played this to confirm my suspicions
You know I was playing summon night swordcraft story again just today. I love both games and started with 2 and I started them both multiple times...a lot of times, like 5 times each. Never got to finishing either. It even got me inspired and made me want to make a game inspired by how it plays. So it was a treat when I saw this uploaded! Great job
Honestly, I had an absolute blast with this game back in the day. One of my favorite GBA games. Unfortunately I never met anyone who even heard of the game before when I was younger. Glory to the internet. Absolutely love this game... And the GBA sequel of course, which even fewer people seem to know about. The Summon Night series in general is one of my favorite game series since I was a child.
I *did* have a physical copy way back when. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. Glory to emulators, though. But yeah, I've not met a single person who even played the game, let alone possessed a physical copy, well into the 3DS era so there's that.
I just decided to browse an emulation site for decently rated action rpgs to put on my phone that I turned into a retro handheld and came across this and the sequel. Within a day I almost quit the game because I couldn't get through the first tournament fight because I didn't know I'm allowed to keep doing the dungeon after I make my first knife and don't have to go into the tournament with basically cutlery. And when I restarted, as a summon I got an anime waifu that simps for my character and just wants me to be nice to her, so now I'm motivated.
Ah yes summon night one of the best game I played in GBA... When I was bored with Pokémon I tried playing this game I never stop and even go back every now and then to play it again
I've played this and I loved it a lot. It's a shame it doesn't get talked about too much. Hopefully this video blows up so more people can learn about this series and love it as much as I have
This is my favorite game of all time and for someone out of the small community to talk about it so fondly...this is now one of my favorite channels, instantly suscribed .
I'm amazed that after all the years since I last played the games, that I could recognize the characters in the thumbnail while scrolling through recommended videos for me. I played both games a ton and still even own the carts. Thanks for a nice trip down some nostalgic memories of these great gems.
These two games have, collectively, been my favorite video game, hands down, for probably over a decade at this point. I bring it up and recommend it whenever I possibly can in hopes of spreading the word just that little bit further, haha. I'm currently on the art team for the translation patch, and it has been SUCH an honor to contribute to a piece of history for this series, unofficial as it may be. also i made a short game that's secretly a fangame for this series in disguise called deadly dog-dating dungeon but that is significantly less important dont worry about that
Hey! Thanks for working on the project, keeping my dreams of playing this game in english alive (no matter how long it might take). Also I think the name you chose for your game is pretty inline with summon night scs's naming scheme 🤣
I love these games so much. I'm still eagerly awaiting the translation. I tried playing it on an emulator but it's just not the same not being able to talk to any of the townsfolk
FINALLY!! I always knew that there were other people out there who loved this game, but I'd never had any real proof! Summon Night: Swordcraft Story was my favorite game as a kid, and I recently started replaying it on an emulator--it's actually aged amazingly well! Thanks for giving it some of the attention it's always deserved!
I never had the chance to playthis game, but I recognized the thumbnail immediately because I remember pining over it through the pages of Nintendo Power as a kid. Love to see the dedication to older an more obscure games. Thanks for bringing back the fun memory!
I looked up this title purely on a whim and feeling nostalgic but to my surprise the game is still considered underrated despite how good it was. Thank you for shedding some light on this series with this good video. Just subscribed.
Oh my god ive played this when i was young and never seen anyone talk about it or any of the other game in the series until today...thanks for making this video
It always makes me super happy when people appreciate the absolute gem that is Summon Night Swordcraft Story! It's one of the most influential games of my childhood, and next to Riviera: The Promised Land and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, totally shaped my interest in JRPGs and their action variants. These games STILL hold up today, too! I mean, it wouldn't be a stretch to suggest that Swordcraft Story is a huge reason action RPGs are my favorite games today! Thanks so much for making this!
@@vtea Definitely recommend giving it a try! Like most classic Atlus games, it's a bit of an oddball, but quite charming in its uniqueness. Not sure if there are any others like it, but if there are I'd be very happy if someone could introduce me to them!
UA-cam suggested this video at random... And I had to watch it, because these two games were my favorites for the GBA. I'm glad that people still remember them, as they were creative, funny and their art was awesome!
So at one point I had this game but I never got to play it. It was a gift along with the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe which completely devoured my time as I went completionist on it. By the time I even remembered Summon Night's existence it had disappeared, I'm pretty sure someone at school stole it but that's neither here nor there. This is the first time I've heard about the series in a good twelve years at least so thank you for reminding me about its existence.
Ahh, good times... I actually used to play this on the computer using an emulator my brother installed in the old family computer back in my 1st grade. Specifically Summon Night Swordcraft story 1 and 2. I am now on my graduating year in college. Made me wanna play it again now using an emulator on my phone.
I absolutely loved the combat in this game. Every weapon felt different, so many weapons to choose from, a decent story, man what a game. Brings back so many memories.
When I first played this game, I literally stayed up for an entire weekend to finish it. I was so hooked. And the sequel was even better. Incredibly underrated games. I'm currently playing through Golden Sun and it's not the same
I remember many years ago that I bored playing all of my game, and randomly download these two games and playing it, and realize these games are one of my favorite of all time. Such a nostalgic feeling watching your video
Finally, someone else that actually talked about this game this game is a masterpiece I fell in love with it in my first play through using the sword and drill combination and I break every weapon EVERY SINGLE BOSS WEAPON,I still have so much to play with the post content on the first game(I still have to finish the story on the sequel)and one last thing,I am one of the dunce that got caught and I didn't have the chance to explore the god damn dungeon I'm so upset about that. but yeah This game is truely one of the best game I have ever played on the gba.
Lmao, I didnt realize there was a whole cave part until I was gathering footage for the video, it's crazy knowing people have played this game without ever finding out about it.
Aw man, you reminded me of the times I replayed the second game on New Game+ so I can complete all the weapon techniques, including the ones made from Bushido Scrolls. Yep, three subsequent playthroughs. The game is just THAT good.
I finished the first 2 games, though never finished the third one. Knowing that the 3rd entry is getting a translation makes me happy, i'd love to see them complete the project. Last time i played the english patch only like half hour of non grind gameplay was done.
They're still making progress on it! It's going to take some time since I feel the team understands the writing is a very important aspect of Summon Night, so they're putting a lot of effort in making sure they convey all the small details from its original languag
I HONESTLY ADORE this game, i love it when after certain missions/objectives, you can go on a "date" with one of your NPC friends where they'll POUR their heart out. Accompanied by the beautiful and character-unique BGM and the date location of YOUR choice, this game made my ENTIRE childhood. ❤️
I remember a long time ago, I was in a rough patch in life where I had nothing but my smartphone, the Summon Night series held me over and I loved it so damn much!
I liked it, though the one I think no one talks about is Sigma Star Saga myself. It's a shmup mixed with an RPG, with several dozen/hundred combinations of Gun Data, which changes How the Gun Fires, What the Gun Fires, and What Effect the Shot Has. My favorite being huge bullets/torpedoes that fire in 8 directions at once and track. Mind this was good too. Loved the challenges I could come up with on my path, and also the variations I could get with my partner. I tend to go for the robot guy when male, and the demon when female.
@@vtea I can recommend it, but one warning, it's a bit of a rush job, so there are some bugs when you go to the fifth world on your journey. Some Game Breaking, so have a safety savestate at the beginning of that one just in case. Otherwise, it has a neat story, some good gameplay(If you're into shmups), and some interesting characters.
I'm playing this game now on my miyoo mini plus, and I have teared up a couple of times & I love how it's really queer too. I appreciate this game so much.
If I recall correctly SwordCraft Story 3 was the LAST GBA game ever, so no doubt the devs and sprite peeps were putting in extra work to make those sprites look 👌👌
Just found out your channel while searching for videos on this game :) I discovered emulation fairly early as a kid in Brazil, the games over here that were more accessible were ps2 ones, so I picked up VBA when I was like 11 or something, and this series was probably as impactful as the pokemon games for me so cool to hear that people are actually working on further translating the game, i'll definitively be looking into that
Hey fellow emulator! Glad to see another person who played this game as a kid, I agree! This game in particular really got me into jrpg games, wished there was more games like it
For some reason, I was gifted the sequel as a teenager. It was a game series that I had never heard of and a game I didn't ask for. But dang do I love this game! I still play it on an almost annual basis!
Great video. I had to discover the game in the same way because it was never released in Europe and there was no Virtual Console release in Wii U because the company that owned the license dissapeared, this game had two different publishers and the license is now in Namco Bandai, so the game is in a legal limbo. But thanks for letting me know about Maglam Lord! I'll check it if it gets a PC release.
Prob the GBA games I'm most shocked don't get brought up more are the Super Robot Taisen games. They're absolutely AMAZING, for the animations if nothing else.
absolutely one of the best games on the GBA. up there with Fire Emblem/Sacred Stones, FFTA, and Super Robot Wars OG 1 and 2. A few other lesser known gems include Yggdra Union and Riviera.
Now this brings back good memories! It's indeed a hidden gem in my book! The 2nd game too! Sadly if i remember correctly the 3rd game didn't get a translation so... Edit. Just now found out that the 3rd game is partially translated and i completely forgot that a 4th game exists. (According to the internet, but i have yet to find more information about it)
Hey VTea, not sure if you read messages but after watching your video I just *had* to try this game, so I got it for my flashcard and I'm playing it on my GBA SP. It's so much fun and I can't wait to play the sequel! Thank you for making this video.
I'm really glad someone is talking about this after I found out about the third game and it's translation being made. It was so awesome playing the beta and it got me so hyped for the translation to come out. I'm also really looking forward to hearing the music in the game while also being able to understand whats going on
There are three titles from the GBA Era that will always have a special place in my heart, aside from Pokemon, zelda and Final Fantasy games. This (summon nights) Mana Khemia, and Golden Sun
yo i was thinking of this game not that long ago and could not recall the name of it, just that I played a few minutes of it and it seemed really interesting, thanks my guy
I remember this when i was playing it on my early 10 years old, HAHAHAHA now i been craving for nostalgia i need this!! Time to lock up on my room for 1 month again
funny thing is out of all GBA game that i played as a kid before, the name Summon Night Swordcraft Story(the third one that has 0 localization) stick it into my SEA monke head like a glue and i can't forget even more so than Pokemon(pokemon has so many media it will make sure you somehow remember it) despite being so generic and forgettable name as heck.
Love these games. I discovered them when a friend of mine downloaded the original. I got hooked immediately. Drills were always my favorite because I loved that weapon-break mechanic.
i just starting doing some search about this game, and i decided to look at other's peoples viewpoints about this games, and your video not only nail it, it made me laugh super hard, great video! actually learn a couple of stuff i either forgot, or never understood at the time i played that game
THANK YOU FOR TALKING about summonight. This is the one game series that deadass makes me feel like im wasting away whilst theres a whole ass world of adventure happening in this tiny piece of plastic. Oh how i wish i were in the world of thesw games and i STILL DO. The 2nd game had STELLAR OSTS and everytime i listen to them i feel that feeling again. Thank you for bringing more attention to such a wonderful series.
@@vtea THERE IS a remix of the 2nd games "Monoshift" its AMAZING. I can long and hope. The summonight ocs ive made to cope so damn hard man. I STILL COPE. ONE DAY. one day this game will get its deserved recognition
Several years back I got a copy of both games from a secondhand shop for 15 bucks total. Some poor chump had some dirt on the connectors. Worked fine after I cleaned it. Couldn’t have been happier.
recently a good friend of mine sent me the soundtrack of the first Summon Night, and I was blasted to some rocking tunes! Now I must play it after hearing you talk about it 😈
This is my childhood holy shit. This unlocked a memory that I always play since 8 years gold. Sugar is best waifu but our father literally gave us away lol Rasho is you generic Tsudere if you pick Female MC Klutzy is very fluffy The robot has very unique dialogue
Ah summon night sword craft story gba. As a kid growing up back in the early 2000s, I did not have the ds and I was the only one among my friends who played this. Such fond memories. I even replay it multiple times to see different ending with different characters on both game
I really miss the gba era, games from that time have a special place in my heart. tho I also enjoy newer games ofc but nostalgia keeps me coming back to those games once in a while
Same, sometimes I get in a mood where I wanna relive those memories. Pokemon rom hacks fill both by giving me a new experience while also giving me that nostalgia
Summon Night Swordcraft Story was randomly recommended to me by a friend, as a "Underrated Masterpiece" for the GBA, and i say "Well, i have made my own ammount of Hidden Gem Recommendation" (Like Drill Dozer, I'm dead serious that is a game that exists and is hella good) and i am not joking when, two days later, i go ask to my friend over on discord "So... This game got any sequels?" I had completed the main story of the first game in no time and loved every second of it, and then they tell me it actually has a second game that is better in like a thousand things? Yeah, Sign me up! The second game was just INCREDIBLE, There are no words that can say how invested i was on the story (Simple but very effective and even got some twists) and how the gameplay and Weapon Crafting systems were incredible, i ended completing the main story of the second game in 3 days only, and i liked every part of it, even the special gimmick that the game has, i think it's incredible! I can't recommend this game enough, so i'm glad that you're able to do it, and i just hope the localization fan project of the third game goes well.
I was in the phase where I kept wanting more after the 2nd game and was in such big disappointment that theres no other game like it. The formula is so simple and good, I find it to be mind boggling that a game dev hasn't capitalized on its main mechanics/gimmicks.
@@vtea I just hope more indie developers see this game as a main inspiration, as i doubt Triple A Companies are interested in a game that in reality didn't selled a lot, nowadays they never take risks like that
Idk how I’ve never found this video before, my first experience with the series was Twin Age for the DS, but I did get my hands on Swordcraft Story 2! I even got Summon Night 5 and 6 for PSP and Vita respectively, I truly wish this series got more love, even the other Japanese exclusive Spinoff Titles like Granthese or a translation of the first 4 mainline titles
I know that feeling too. The swordcraft story games are very hidden gems that nobody knows. Even the summon night twin age on the DS is very unknown :c
I saw the thumbnail and the date and i got excited. Summon night swordcraft was my first game (in one of those 1001 games in 1 things. I became a degenerate child because sugar corrupted me
thanks for this video, i just can't remember the name of the game it's been like 10-11 years now i finally found this gem again gonna play in gba emulator through my phone thank you so much 😍😍❤️ ps: how i find this video? i was searching "gameboy advance sword crafting game" and your video is the first that pops up 🖐️😂😂
Never played the first game, but I did play the second one on a GBA emulator. It was an awesome game that I probably want to revisit some day for the good, fun memories.
I just searched for videos on this series because i remembered it and was like "I wonder what happened with this series" i mean last time this happened to me with the Yakuza series of which i only knew the first game on PS2 before finding out it has like 7 main games.
I love this game. In terms of its niche genre, it shares the same gameplay style as GBA's Tales of Phantasia. The difference is that the weapons are character-locked within the party, and it features a lot of magic.
I've never heard anyone talk about the him tomorrow games and I am thrilled that you mentioned them They were literally some of my most favorite games ever on the game boy and that's saying a lot... Cuz I had harvest Moon and rune factory in pokémon and so many more lol
This was an incredibly nice review! And I am also on the same boat of only really knowing about the Swordcraft Story games. Not having that much knowledge on stuff like the main games, Ex-Thesis and Granthese. Which are obviously untranslated. I would absolutely loved if you went a bit more in-depth for the 2nd game in the meanwhile!
@@vtea Oh, I see. I really wish there was more translated Summon Night material you could talk about. There is Twin Age, which. While I like. Feels kinda barebones. And also X Tears Crown. Which has an incomplete translation I believe. There is of course 5 and 6... But it would be a bit hollow to play them knowing you are missing 4 other games worth of important information. I hope you can at least tackle Swordcraft Story 3 when the fantranslation is eventually done. (Although weirdly enough, the game doesnt even have a 3 in its title in japanese. Instead it has the subtitle of "Hajimari No Ishi/The Stone Of Beginnings" NONE of the other 2 Swordcraft Story games had subtitles.)
Swordcraft Story 2 was the game that singlehandedly got me into crafting. The integration of the crafting system into the story was just perfect for me as a kid back then. Still can recall how Lynn was such a tease lol. I also played the first Swordcraft Story game after I finished the second one but I found the postgame rather empty in comparison though I resonated more with the main story.
I remember playing all the they through the first two games on and trying to play through the 3rd one with a guide and giving up. man this was my favorite GBA game and no one ever talked about it.
I wish I didn't lose this game, I remember sinking in probably over 300 hours into it. I remember playing this game in between doctor visits and just chilling on my bed at home.
I'm gonna be honest: around the time Pokemon Diamond/Pearl came up, I was lurking a Pokemon-themed website and in "Other games like Pokemon" have found Megaman Battle Network, Zoids Legacy, Medabots, and Summon Night. I regret nothing.
Again would like to thank the Summon Night Community Discord for their continued work on the translation of the third game.
Here's the link if you guys want to check on their current progress or just talk about Summon Night!

this is literally the first gba game i played when i was a kid- i was surprised how there's little to no one that knows about this game :')
I love the 1st and 2nd swordcraft story. the stories are fun and charming XD
Can't believe I just now discovered these. Would have been playing them nonstop as a kid. Good stuff.
I like your editing style a lot! Hope you climb the subscriber ladder man.
Thanks! I'm constantly trying new ways to format/script videos, I'm glad someone notices!
I'll check that out! I like playing more lesser known games
I'm thankful I still remember this series and now and then replay those games
If I recall correctly SwordCraft Story 3 was the LAST GBA game ever, so no doubt the devs and sprite peeps were putting in extra work to make those sprites look 👌👌
I believe it
WHOA!! what a rare find.
Just found out your channel while searching for videos on this game :)
I discovered emulation fairly early as a kid in Brazil, the games over here that were more accessible were ps2 ones, so I picked up VBA when I was like 11 or something, and this series was probably as impactful as the pokemon games for me
so cool to hear that people are actually working on further translating the game, i'll definitively be looking into that
Hey fellow emulator! Glad to see another person who played this game as a kid, I agree! This game in particular really got me into jrpg games, wished there was more games like it
Woah! I was trying to help with the translation rom efforts for the third game many many years ago! It's so cool to see it's still going! 😃
For some reason, I was gifted the sequel as a teenager. It was a game series that I had never heard of and a game I didn't ask for. But dang do I love this game! I still play it on an almost annual basis!
Dude finally someone is talking about this game! I love the series, waiting for the translation for the third game to finish.
Me too.. Waiting the third series translated..,
Me too, just waiting for the third series to finish translating
Downloaded this game 2 days ago and im absolutely hooked right now cant believe this game series fly off my radar when i was younger
I first discovered this game when I got into emulation. Both Swordcraft Stories are easily among the most fun of all the GBA games.
I feel a lot of people learned about it from roms, on those DL sites it usually scores pretty high in downloads
Prob the GBA games I'm most shocked don't get brought up more are the Super Robot Taisen games. They're absolutely AMAZING, for the animations if nothing else.
I'll give it a look when I have time
absolutely one of the best games on the GBA. up there with Fire Emblem/Sacred Stones, FFTA, and Super Robot Wars OG 1 and 2. A few other lesser known gems include Yggdra Union and Riviera.
A lot of people only had a gba to play pokemon ima be real
I always read my comments ;) and I'm happy you're enjoying the series!
I know this is late. But god I appreciate this video. Thanks for helping us remember a long lost memory champ!!!
Also may I ask you if the project has been complete?
The project is still ongoing sadly, but the discord community is still active if you want to pop in and see how everything's coming along
I should shill this game more, it's really fun :D
Not enough people are shilling this game tbh, gotta pay my dues
yo i was thinking of this game not that long ago and could not recall the name of it, just that I played a few minutes of it and it seemed really interesting, thanks my guy
Swear people have played this game but just cant recall the name (for good reason).
Drills were always my favorite because I loved that weapon-break mechanic.
i just starting doing some search about this game, and i decided to look at other's peoples viewpoints about this games, and your video not only nail it, it made me laugh super hard, great video! actually learn a couple of stuff i either forgot, or never understood at the time i played that game
so glad someone is out there talking about this forgotten gem..
Someone really needs to make remixes of the OST from both games, it's free real estate. It's too good to keep buried in obscurity.
@@vtea THERE IS a remix of the 2nd games "Monoshift" its AMAZING.
I can long and hope. The summonight ocs ive made to cope so damn hard man. I STILL COPE. ONE DAY. one day this game will get its deserved recognition
I loved this game! Thanks for digging it out if my mind dude
I'm glad Chaves got a bit of exposure in this video. I really liked his design lol
He BIG
Several years back I got a copy of both games from a secondhand shop for 15 bucks total. Some poor chump had some dirt on the connectors. Worked fine after I cleaned it. Couldn’t have been happier.
recently a good friend of mine sent me the soundtrack of the first Summon Night, and I was blasted to some rocking tunes! Now I must play it after hearing you talk about it 😈
Summon night GBA are absolutely amazing!! Its a pity the others summon night are strategy RPG games
This is the most specific to me recommended I have ever gotten
UA-cam is always listening
This is my childhood holy shit. This unlocked a memory that I always play since 8 years gold.
Sugar is best waifu but our father literally gave us away lol
Rasho is you generic Tsudere if you pick Female MC
Klutzy is very fluffy
The robot has very unique dialogue
An all time favorite of mine. Thanks for bringing it up!
@@vtea I just hope more indie developers see this game as a main inspiration, as i doubt Triple A Companies are interested in a game that in reality didn't selled a lot, nowadays they never take risks like that
I owned 1 of these games as a kid, they were so awesome.
to this day, Mono Shift and bows were the best addition to the series.
I love this series to death, bless you. Love to see more people talking about this.
Idk how I’ve never found this video before, my first experience with the series was Twin Age for the DS, but I did get my hands on Swordcraft Story 2! I even got Summon Night 5 and 6 for PSP and Vita respectively, I truly wish this series got more love, even the other Japanese exclusive Spinoff Titles like Granthese or a translation of the first 4 mainline titles
youre amazing i hope u make more vids
I've never really forgotten this since a good friend of mine introduced me to the Swordcraft Story series (1 and 2)
I had to find "popular gba games" and go through pages to find this game! Thankfully we can play this once more on phones, so nostalgic.
I became a degenerate child because sugar corrupted me
Me as well tbh
This video was very relatable. I hope we get to play the third game in english soon, keep up the good work!
The summon night community is still making slow but steady progress, if you're curious, pop in the discord to keep up to date!
thanks for this video, i just can't remember the name of the game it's been like 10-11 years now i finally found this gem again gonna play in gba emulator through my phone thank you so much 😍😍❤️
ps: how i find this video?
i was searching "gameboy advance sword crafting game" and your video is the first that pops up 🖐️😂😂
Such a weird combination of words and phrases to lead to this video
@@vtea ikr 😂😂😂
Man, the nostalgia. I actually still own my physical copy of the seconded game to this day. (this game turned out to be pretty rare.)
Never played the first game, but I did play the second one on a GBA emulator. It was an awesome game that I probably want to revisit some day for the good, fun memories.
Personally I enjoyed the 1st game more despite the improvements. Something about the world building and theme of it makes it more enjoyable for me
I just searched for videos on this series because i remembered it and was like "I wonder what happened with this series" i mean last time this happened to me with the Yakuza series of which i only knew the first game on PS2 before finding out it has like 7 main games.
Guy literally starting the prophecy for the next game in the series
I totally would like to, but this video really meant to encompass the whole series, maybe I should've went more into the 2nd game in hindsight
Trust me, you're not the only one who loves this game. It was my favorite GBA game! The dungeon that goes down so far!
God I was just talking about this game. Ty suggestions and you got a new subscriber
Thank you! I'm glad theres other people who are familiar with the game
