- My own self-made Harvest Moon Iceberg has been done and on my Twitter for a long time, but it took me forever to make the video, and now it's finally done! Yay! I feel like the video could be way better, so maybe I'll redo it some day, but I'm happy I've done this.

@@Ritacuore3 Probably in most places. In America for example though, we don't; it's typically expected of the graveyard workers to upkeep the graves and keep them clean. It's one of the reasons why it's so expensive to buy burial space.
Those extra pet rumors in Wonderful life haunted me as a kid. I'd keep reading online it was possible, like if you had high friendship with Vesta she'd give you the raccoon. I wanted it so bad!
Same. I literally found out this year during the remake WHAT the animals actually do 😂 when i was a kid id replay over and over trying to get the extra animals

@@HerKneeUgh they are indicators of good luck. They let you know when you are going to have a good day fishing or at the digsite (chihuahua) where you will have better pulls and faster pull times

I have such a vivid memory of AWL where I married Nami and had my kid go into the artist path (befriending the sculptor). The most terrifying moment came when my kid was doodling on paper and said only "Wound...wound..." It took me far too long to realize he just couldnt pronounce his Rs yet, and that he was not threatening to wound me. 😭😰

But Thoma IS the Harvest King! It would explain why he is always able to retrieve the ball and why he is always on the deeper levels of the mines.
Plus when you get a giant crop he is the one to retrieve it (and ship it) while commanding the Harvest Sprites for help while knowing their names! And he seems to have beef with the Orange Team Leader based on the winter quest, meanwhile normal characters can't see the Sprites!
I'm sold.

I was so obsessed with the witch princess as a kid I did all those terrible things for her without batting an eye and only based on very vague advice for fulfilling her wants online... I still wonder what that says about me to this day
It doesn't really say anything about you, since they're just fictional characters. Committing heinous deeds in videogames is fun because you get to see entertaining reactions without actually hurting anyone. 😁

Had it not been for Natsume... Witch Princess would've been a much more popular bachelorette because honestly she's probably only not popular because the game she's from has many many glitches related to marrying her so not many people are willing to take the risk...
I hope they make a remake of DS Cute though. specifically Cute because it's fixed, and cute.

Also the bell tree joke is because in japanese "kane" is bell and "okane" is money, so it's also a bit of a joke in animal crossing, too!
Actually, kane could mean money (金) and bell (鐘), the お (o) at the beginning is a honorific prefix that it's commonly placed before nouns to add politeness in Japanese ^^
@@kinomotomaria728adding onto this even more (sorry lol) a lot of games from this era use very few, if any, kanji because of sprite size and storage issues. so if you're a japanese player, you would just see かね, no kanji dictating which meaning it has.

Hell yeah Marian and Giorgio couple!! Glad other people got that vibe too. I only ever played Olive town and already was like "why are they being so vague about their respective fiances? And they moved to live together here? And they're always calling each other honey and darling and boasting that their fiance is the most beautiful and the two of them are the 'beautiful dreamers'" and just... how obvious is this lol. If it wasn't intentional then I can't imagine how bad you have to mess up to do all this by accident haha
They both seem like they _would_ be super mysterious and dramatic about their fiances for no reason lmao
I am so glad you included Meryl on this iceberg because oh my god she is such a dark character in an otherwise bright and cheerful game. I just finished completing Magical Melody and for the first time I read all of Meryl's dialogue as I raised her heart level and just... Christ, get this child into therapy. I don't know what happened to her, but I just want to hug her and tell her everything will be okay. ;_;
Something Daryl said in Harvest Moon DS cute hints at the fact that his ancestors was cloning people and I believe that especially when you start looking at the timeline

This iceberg really has me wanting to see a harvest moon like that can function as a completely normal small town sim but has some creepy stuff if you decide to investigate weird events. If a game like Pumpkin Panic can pull off the farming under stress format so well with so little dialog, there's serious potential to make something even scarier if you make a game like that a slower burn.

That one was so messed up that I hesitated to include it.
The sermon about the apartment and the husband is terrifying, straight out of a cosmic horror story! I can picture it in Junji Ito’s style so well.

I have a theory about the "Chick Beam"! Afer the pop song "Koi no Dance Site" from Morning Musume, one of their members had the "Sexy Beam" which was basically a joke dance move to enthrall their (mostly) male fans & make them swoon. It became a huge meme in Japan, and is even referenced in other video games - e.g. Dragon Quest, in which the character dances "seductively" while doing the "Sexy Beam" move. It's a move attributed to female personalities.
Maybe the "Chick Beam" is the same but from Male to Female? So... Skye danced seductively in front of the player.
I love this so much and I actually think your theory is the correct one.
In the new game+ mode of Silent Hill 3 you can wear a magical girl outfit and use an attack called Sexy Beam that isn't suggestive at all, just a generic magical girl attack with a goofy out-of-place name. I always thought it was strange that they named it that of all things but now I know it's a reference to this! Thanks for sharing, I learned something new today!

I am very happy that there is nothing creepy in the SNES Version of Harvest Moon, because for me it is already scary that the music completely cuts off when the night comes and you are left alone with the sound of your own footsteps. I play the game on mute most of the time because it is less scary when there is no music to begin with.
Thanks for no jumpscares. I like to fall asleep to iceberg videos and there's nothing worse than being bolted awake at 2AM by the screams of the damned from your headphones! :p
I'm not very knowledgeable on these games at all, but I do know there's some weird unused items and strangely dark stuff in these games so this should be interesting.
Wow I never realised how much of a dark franchise harvest moon is compared to most other farming related games
I never knew the cricket yelled at you about fertilizer. I can confirm they'll scold you for placing your crops close to trees though, it happened to me because I thought putting them diagonal counted as two squares away (it did not).
I think the cricket is meant to be a mole cricket (you know, those things from Animal Crossing that always make buzzing noises underground).
The bell tree thing is because the Japanese word for bell is the same as the word for money, kane.
The windy noises near the path in AWL could simply be because of all the windmills nearby. You hear them when you're near the windmills as well.
Now that I think about it, why does everyone assume it's coming from the path? I'll have to figure out where it's loudest.

So that must be why the money in Animal Crossing is called bells! I always kinda wondered about that.
I thought I knew about all of the fake video game rumors I fell for as a kid, only to find out through this video that there were even more fake rumors I thought were true, especially about the wonderful life games! Fantastic video.

I always had a crazy theory that Magical Melody and Animal Parade exist on the same island. There's that strange open field in the Fugue Forest right before the Witch's house, and one of Thomas's animals (the same guy from MM) is in the swamp around her house. Plus, when the game starts your character is riding in on a cart, and the boats/water isn't working because of the Blue Bell, so you only could have got there from another part of the island. MM has that path that goes nowhere, but what if it leads to the Fugue Forest? That weird field could have been the way to MM town. Your character in AP left MM town and when you left the forest you ran into the guy who gave you a ride (I forget his name) to your new farm. Plus both games start with your character agreeing to run a farm and not inheriting it like some games. IDK just thought I'd sharelol.
I love theories that connect the games like this. This one is actually really good!

When I heard “Evil Farming Game” I thought of the German fan game “Harvest Moon: Mondlichts Kinder”. A game created in 2006 or so via RPG Maker. The game is similar to Friends of Mineraltown from the GBA, only it has darker themes and is decorated with horror elements.
Love the video, very nice ice berg. Regarding the dog ball in HM DS: You can actually put it in your cabinet/bookshelf that you can buy from tele shopping and Thomas will not be able to "steal" it anymore. :D
This was a pretty informative and enjoyable video to watch, keep up the great work! I'm especially interested in the manga and wouldn't mind giving translating them a shot. Really curious what kinds of stories they'd tell in the manga format.

Tried to reply a couple of times, but I think something is tripping up the automatic youtube moderation and I dunno how to really explain without doing that. But, uh, we have a bunch to translate if you wanna help out, including one book that's 250 pages worth of stuff that released between SNES and 64, which is where Claire first appears. The kappa showing up in the mirror scared me so bad as a kid to the point where I got rid of my mirror, had my mum check my room each night and then I put up a trap for him and would stay up all night so he couldn’t get me 😅
Oh I came to Harvest Moon DS without caution thinking, rather naive actually, shouldn't contain anything that creeps me out as hard as the 4:44am dark Easter egg (creepy pasta). Seriously when just watching the video as a footage still gives me the shock that creeps me out. Now recently playing SoS: FoMT Switch remake now I know there's a Kappa and that the creepy mirror was Kappa that settles me a bit about the mirror.
This was a great iceberg! It was a lot of fun revisiting all the weird stuff from this charming childhood favorite of mine. It would be cool to see you do a tierlist of best to worst SoS+HM games or a series of videos deep diving into the story of each game!
Thank you for the jumpscare warning. I'm a big fan of iceberg videos, but unfortunately can't watch a good chunk of them due to jumpscares. I wish more creators do what you do.

I think jumpscares are somewhat rare, but I unfortunately have encountered a couple in iceberg videos, and I don't like the suspenseful feeling I now get when I don't know if a video will have them or not.

Ah man these little easter eggs and rumors really take me back! I remember doing the even boy/odd girl trick for DS Cute and it did work but I took forever to get a child because I just HAD to see the divorce event 😂 (I’m a little surprised it didn’t make the list but it is little more than just a couple lines of text and nothing happens anyway)
I emulated a japanese version of ds cute for the best friend system and married Inari only because I “thought it was cool” and there was “no way I’m gay” (which was extremely wrong and it took me like a decade after playing my first hm game to realize)
Despite having been an active fogu forum user, this video had SO many things I had never even heard of or experienced in games I have played so this video was a lot of fun!

I was listening to this while working on other stuff so maybe i missed it, but were the animals in AWL explained? I just learned what they do this year after yrs of growing up playing that game 😂
For those who don’t know. They are luck indicators. Chihuahua digsite luck, raccoon lizard owl and turtle fishing luck, they indicate good luck at the spot nearest to them. Having extra luck increases your chances of good pulls and how fast you catch/dig.
Cougars apparently sound like woman screaming. Could be an explanation for the screaming at the grave at the end. Part creepy, part well...also creepy because he could of gotten killed by a wild animal.
I’ve been replaying Tale of Two Towns of all things recently, and I honestly forgot how fun it is. I love the town rivalry, the cooking contests, the marriage candidates, the horse cart, even the owl.
I know it’s far-fetched, but I’d love to see a remake of this one too.
I want to see rival marriages and children again too!! I miss what Animal Parade did so much 😭
i've been playing it too! the only thing that i hate is that the japanese version gets to have an extra art in the end i think? according to ushi no tani blog but its fine i can still enjoy the game without ever getting those pretty pics T^T
There was a cheat in an Another Wonderful Life, where if you insert a controller in the third slot and hold down L+R+Z, all the inventory pages would be full of items at x99. Some of the items will switch out if you keep doing it. Unfortunately, if you did this too many times, your memory card corrupts. That happened to me. 😭 But it was cool while it lasted lol.
I forgot about this one! I remember I was too scared to try it cause I thought something bad might happen.
The handheld games are so unforgivable and I feel like we were all masochists playing them as kids.
I had no idea about the DS game glitches. Jeez!
In HM DS Cute there is a pet thing like the one for Karen in HM 64. It works with the cat and the dog on all the villagers, including the regular marriage candidates and rivals, never tried it on the special girls. But, some only like the dog, some only like the cat, and some are fine with either. You can even see it work if you have the ring equipped that shows affection/friendship. If you get the villager inside a building, you can even max out their friendship in 1 in-game day. I don't remember if the trick works in the original HM DS.

I actually got the cutscene of the goddess hitting her head in my game but the sprites made it seem like if I collect enough bobbles that she will eventually come out? It sounded like "get enough achievements and the goddess will come back"
I'm laughing- as a kid, the witch princess was the first person I married, and yes I knew the requirements. def did the fodder trick in summer, I had a quarantined section of my farm dedicated to the death sheds

Wanted to add for glitches stopping marriage candidates from being marriageable- in ToT, a glitch in some early copies stopped you from completing Calvin’s 5th heart event, so he was unmarryable. I was heartbroken when I learned both me and my best friend had glitched copies, but was so excited when I could finally marry him in AP!!
I remember you could mail in your glitched copy and they'd send you one with the bug fixed.
I always thought that Doctor is named Doctor in Katakana so his name is actually doctor.
So he's a physician/doctor (医師) named doctor (ドクター)

learning that there are these just. masses of ppm who hate/hated Rick makes me?? so sad??? he's my favourite bachelor in the series he's just a dorky dude who cares about his mom and his sister and wants the best for them (even if he can come off as overbearing) and resents his dad for seemingly abandoning them when his mother is sick. I love him sm so I was genuinly floored to learn ppl hate him sm :(((
love this video though, love harvest moon so so so much. grew up playing hmds and then got into friends of mineral town on the gba and have loved the series to bits ever since
so as far as thomas being called "baldy" i found out recently that in japanese, a very rude insult is "Hage", which translates to bald. its a general insult, and is not at all only meant to refer to someone who is, in fact, bald. I think this was probably the case in the japanese version, which would have not made so much sense when translating to other languages

Fun video! Covered a lot of stuff, and the comments so far have covered a lot of others, but I wanted to mention a few other things that are fun: There's possibly another weather girl cameo, but it's a bit of a stretch. Long, long before A New Beginning released, there was a girl who looked almost exactly like Yuri as the weather girl in Save the Homeland. Same outfit, mostly similar hair (just looks neater) with the only big difference being that the StH weathergirl doesn't have glasses.
Also, iirc, Popuri mentions Rod finding the cure for Lilia in the Island games!

And I came back to your video to continue watching (amazing god tier video btw) and then was hearing the sad grant song... and I felt so terrified because I thought somehow the glitch of the music never stopping had happened to me somehow in real life ??! Then realised you had been using it in the background. 😂😅
One of the folks who translated one of the comics you listed in the comic translation section, ranch story, are still active on discord, as a wiki group and tumblr so maybe more cool things could pop up in the future.

This is a great video, thank you sm for uploading!! I honestly adores the creepy and mysterious easter eggs that Harvest Moon games had in their earlier releases. It adds the unique gap of a cute farming game with a creepy and disturbing lore. Guess I just like to get scared, haha

46:11 fun fact, this is Homaged in Silent Hill 2. While passing through an area, if you have the steel pipe equipped while near a particular area of water, it will prompt you to throw your pipe in. If you do, a spirit comes out of the water and asks if you dropped the Golden Pipe. Answer honestly and she gives you a gold pipe, a silver pipe, and your steel pipe.
I truly miss the rival system from HM animal parade- it added so much depth to all characters to build up friendships and watch them get married and have kids. I hate that they do put that into games now. So I’ll just keep replaying animal parade 😅
It was the best of both worlds with feeling like the world was developing and changing along with you while also having complete control over rival marriages so you wouldn't accidentally trigger any events you didn't want to! Still miss them to this day
I'm certain that the cricket telling you off at your doorstep for planting something next to a tree is totally a thing, at least in the GameCube version of Another Wonderful Life. I remember it happening to me as a kid and it really freaked me out.

I totally understand that insomnia-induced reddit post. As a kid I had multiple "memories" that I was not sure were real or dreams. Some ended up being real actually. I'm an avid dreamer who always remembers my dreams when I wake up. I am 21 and still remember my dreams almost every night/morning.
When I was a kid I got the heebie jeebies just from hearing the sounds of the mountain at night in Back to Nature games, not to mention actually jumpscared if I heard the barking of the mountain dog (me and my sister now affectionately calls it Baskerville lmao), now as an adult I love all these scary things in other games that I didn't get to play and wish I could've experienced them all! Thanks so much for this iceberg! Love all the hard work you poured into it

great video! i learned a lot i had no idea about previously. that being said, i really wish ioh/si would have gotten more attention than just a throwaway mention, as they have a lot of interesting and obscure bits as well. the vaughn starry night glitch, the rumor about regis being a vampire, fomt/mfomt lore implications, frantic farming, etc etc. there's also entries on this iceberg that qualify for ioh/si as well but not mentioned, such as the gender of your child being set at the wedding date which is also a thing in si and is not exclusive to ds cute. i do love how you formatted and narrated this iceberg though, here's hoping for a future second edition with more love for less loved titles in the series?
I figured I'd be forgetting a few important things while I was making it. There was a lot for me to try to remember by myself. I now remember thinking the vampire rumor was funny. I'll definitely have to update the iceberg at some point. Comments are helping a lot.

This video kills me. I love it. There’s so many things about HM/SOS that are so mysterious. AWL is my favorite and that always had so many rumors that followed it even to the new game where even still answers can be hazy. Such as everyone’s depressed child, because are we smothering the child or not loving it enough?? Or the doors that weren’t ever used being lead to the Witch and only being able to be opened in autumn.
Finally I was able to finish watching this video, It Is Great!!
And my only contribution to it is that I do have the "1J" HM Ds cartridge but if you touch the bottom screen as soon as the little intro start, you also get the glitched screen, not only with Leia but with glitched characters

21:44 omg a blast from the past with the Karen dog trick! I actually lost my dog forever from doing that as a kid lol. One of the days I was going to show it to her, I was holding it when I entered her home and triggered her sick in bed heart event. My character had the dog with him, but it was automatically dropped from his hands and running around during the cutscene in her room…
And then the player auto leaves her room. He left the dog there. And since you can’t enter their bedrooms during normal gameplay, my dog was gone forever :”)

One event that I haven't seen many people talk about is the anniversary of Ann's mother's death in Back to nature (I don't know if Friends of mineral town also has this event) When autumn starts you will get a letter in your mail saying that on the 5th of Fall the Inn will be open only until noon, when you arrive that day if you go to the Inn you will only find Ann working alone and if you talk to her she will tell you that she is very busy, if you go up the mountain to the top you will see Doug looking at the horizon, if you talk to him he will tell you that today is the anniversary of his wife's death and that Ann always lets him rest from work that day, I know it is not as spooky or mysterious as other points of this iceberg but I always found it quite sad and interesting since not much is said about it, as a bonus it is something special for me since my grandfather also died on the 5th of Fall, a very rare coincidence.

This was so informative!! Loved it!! I wonder if the glitchy Tree of Tranquility early copies could also make a good addition to the iceberg? I don't know if that story is well-known nowadays (I was at the UNoT forums back then when it happened). That the early copies of ToT had a bug that didn't allow players to marry Calvin so basically Natsume had to ask players to send them their defective copies and so they would send them a new copy without the glitch. Doing a little bit of research on it, it seems there's still a way to know if your copy is glitched or not and that is to access the Friendship menu, go to the residents and their heart levels section and check the word "track", if it has % around it, then it is a glitched copy (though this hasn't been confirmed).
That would make a great addition! I never wanted to marry Calvin, but I really wanted to know if mine was glitched or not. I can't remember which version I ended up thinking I have, so I'll have to try and figure that out again.
I think another way to tell if you have an early, possibly glitched copy is if it's a green disk.
I absolutely loved this iceberg. Harvest moon is so nostalgic for me and I loved revisiting these stories that sometimes we don't even notice while playing! This franchise is gold!

Really liked this video, i recommend focusing on the audio levels for next time. Sometimes your voice is a total jump scare and is WAY higher than the last segment. Other than that, a very solid iceberg video!
The first ever game I got was Harvest moon and coincidently it was the first one I played on my first console. Sparked the excitement and helped me develop the love for games. It was then I planned to go to college and make a hobby that some parents would think is not good to make a hobby into a career . I am proof it can work out the way it shaped me and made me who I am today I’d never realize that if not for Harvest moon so I’m so happy to say my love of games is why I’m able to do what I love as a Career!
