Careful what you playback through. I played this through my excellent car stereo system. Mesa Cabinet was slightly better than Engl cabinet with a bit more headroom. Both cabinets sound good though. Yes Engl amps are good but I prefer the ability to have less compression which is really impossible to dial out of an Engl. I would bet adding compression to the Mesa would surprise people. Too me the Mesa is more versatile. The Engl gets that certain sound without the need of pedals though. I can see where people prefer it. But if you play a multitude of genres, it is hard to beat a Mesa Roadster or Roadking II. The Mesa Badlander is great for modern Metal though.
JCM through the Mesa cab gets my vote. Why does the Fortin sound like someone calling collect to play their demo on a voicemail machine from 1992? Just me perhaps...
@@craigharrison5406 Yep even placement of the room mic would change the tone drastically. Even where the amp is placed in the room can change the sound. Sounds bouncing back off walls can cause cancellations.
It's hard to beat a boogie setup. I bought my MKIV in 1995 and it is still my favorite amp. However, I did buy the Engl Powerball II and it is badass as well through my boogie cab. Great video and we all appreciate you making these!
On an iPhone 15 promax the Marshall sounds the best through the Marshall cabinet and the mesa cabinet. The mesa sounds just as good through the Marshall and the engl.
I think all the amplifiers sound better through the Mesa cabinet. Especially the Marshall amp. I was just wondering how Marshall cabinet would sound like with the original speakers. Thank you Ola for great content and great channel!!
This is an interesting video, and my favourite cabinet was the mesa. But my experience is, that in a band context, with drums and bass beside you, everything can be different. Frequencies that you like, when playing an amp alone, can be the frequencies, that get lost when the bass is playing. And frequencies, that are too agressive, when playing alone, can be the ones that keep your guitar sound from drowning in band context....... Never ending story
Rectifiers are way to flubby !!! Way better options nowadays!!! Even the JP mk2c+ is better than a rectifier! A fully modded rectifier sounds pretty bad ass, but theirs so many better choices nowadays! A 5150III is light years better!!! Super tight and doesn’t even need to be pushed like a Rectifier does.
Ola I want to thank you first for this comparison. As an audio engineer and longtime guitar player, I'd have to say that the Marshall with its cab sounds the best over all. However, it does need a driver comparison in your studio. I've never been that happy with eminence drivers but they are a good overall baseline to start with,I think it would be worth a test of different drivers like celestion 30s, and a few more modern drivers in that old cab untill you get the grunt you're looking for out of that old Marshall, it really is a fantastic sounding Amp the voicing of the pre Amp is perfection because the clarity of notes is impeccable. In this comparison the boogie cab sounded better with the Marshall head period. All the rest sounded darker and a bit muddled to me. They all seemed to sound best with their matching cab except the Marshall. Thank you for your time and as always I look forward to your next test
Would be more interesting to see the Road King against the Badlander. The RK has 4 6L6s and 2 EL-34s and you can assign 2 6L6, 4 6L6, 2 EL-34 and 4 6L6+2 EL-34 per channel. So it would be easy to compare it to the Badlanders since they ship with EL-34s. You can throw in EL-34s in the Roadster but you can’t have both types at the same time.
This is easily in the top 5 helpful videos you have in your vast library of video content, every music store that sells amp should have this Amp Cab switcher. IMO the Engl XXL cab sounded the best for sweet metal riffage
This is awesome, it's like the little guy who lives inside my Helix who switches my amps and cabs/IRs while I create presets, only recreated to be (above average) human sized!
I think this is the first time I've seen a comparison like this, and I now see why the Mesa cabs are so hyped. It's so much beefier than all the others.
All four amps sounded killer in the Mesa Cab. I liked every amp in the Engl cab better than the Engl in the Engl. I think the Fortin into the Mesa or the Marshall into the Engl was my favorite!
I'd love to hear the Roadster through both the Mesa and ENGL cab again, but with both cabs fully mic'ed up. I liked the sound of the ENGL, but I'm pretty sure it was just because of mic placement. Thanks for the great video!

@@bocolis88 No they don’t -I have one. The difference is that the the top two speakers point more towards your ears. Stick your ears in front of a “B” Cab vs an “A” cab and you will hear the harsh treble in both of them. When your standing up your ears aren’t on axis with the “beam” from the speakers. So you don’t hear it. The “A” cab points two of the speakers more on axis with your ears -so you hear it more. This is the issue with a cranked amp facing the audience on stage. @@christebo7305 I used my audio technica headphones, but you are right. The audio device changes the sound of course:)
Mesa+Mesa and Fortin amp+ENGL cab are my favorites.
men that marshall with the rectifier cab sound kick ass. The engl cab his really impressive too
Loved the Marshall through all of cabs most, personal winner
JCM through the Mesa cab gets my vote.
Why does the Fortin sound like someone calling collect to play their demo on a voicemail machine from 1992?
Just me perhaps...
Fortin is overrated in my opinion.
It's because the Mic is so far away from the Fortin Cab....he has it sitting right in front of the Mesa cab
Totally. Extremely versatile
@@craigharrison5406 Yep even placement of the room mic would change the tone drastically. Even where the amp is placed in the room can change the sound. Sounds bouncing back off walls can cause cancellations.
u sure it wasnt the ENGL cab? that was the one for me
Day is never complete without Ola 🤘🏼
It's hard to beat a boogie setup. I bought my MKIV in 1995 and it is still my favorite amp. However, I did buy the Engl Powerball II and it is badass as well through my boogie cab. Great video and we all appreciate you making these!
Yep Engl is stillmy favorite after all this time.
Late comment here, but I agree with you that every amp sounded best through the Mesa cab. The Marshall kinda surprised me the most 😊
Sick comparison! I'm blown away by the Marshall; wasn't expecting it to sound that good. Great to see/hear how much impact a cab has.
Awesome. What exactly is your point? Should I not et the Mesa?
Oh yeaaah! JCM800 through the Mesa cab us pure awesome. Also the Engl through Mesa cab has a wicked grit.
Never really hear people using alnico speakers for metal. That Marshall sounded KILLER
Marshall with Marshall Cabinet sounded beautiful.
Mesa sounds so deep and perfectly balanced
That Engl with the Mesa cab was awesome
The Recto half-stack, still the undisputed king of brutality. The ENGL head in the Recto cab was sweet af. The rest was just different but not better.
The KHE stuff is really phenomenal.
The Mesa setup just does it for me. It sounds so good.
Suggestion: Mesa Roadster vs Mesa Badlander 🤟
Would be more interesting to see the Road King against the Badlander.
The RK has 4 6L6s and 2 EL-34s and you can assign 2 6L6, 4 6L6, 2 EL-34 and 4 6L6+2 EL-34 per channel.
So it would be easy to compare it to the Badlanders since they ship with EL-34s.
You can throw in EL-34s in the Roadster but you can’t have both types at the same time.
The roadster with the Mesa is an effin monster!.. Love the Engl sound as well...
Now Ola needs and Orange PPC412-C and a and an EVH 5150 III Stealth
This is easily in the top 5 helpful videos you have in your vast library of video content, every music store that sells amp should have this Amp Cab switcher. IMO the Engl XXL cab sounded the best for sweet metal riffage
This is awesome, it's like the little guy who lives inside my Helix who switches my amps and cabs/IRs while I create presets, only recreated to be (above average) human sized!
I think Engl makes the sickest cabs. Love the aesthetic, sound, and from what I've heard they're built like tanks.
I think this is the first time I've seen a comparison like this, and I now see why the Mesa cabs are so hyped. It's so much beefier than all the others.
I have a Recto 4x12 (V30) and it makes any head sound deep and dark.
It matches perfectly with the DSL20.
cause the mic is sitting in front of it 😭
This is an excellent video. Ola is constantly pushing what it means to demonstrate gear on UA-cam. What a fucking legend
All four amps sounded killer in the Mesa Cab. I liked every amp in the Engl cab better than the Engl in the Engl. I think the Fortin into the Mesa or the Marshall into the Engl was my favorite!
Are you serious!?! The Fortin was by far the worst sounding amp out of them all!!!
@@ZYGTropicals Hi, hello - are you familiar with something called subjective taste?
Awesome compare and contrast between the amps and cabinets. Thanks for uploading and sharing.
Mesa looks to me the best for loud modern riff and the Engl/marshall for loud and fluid solos !
(Fortin best overall to simulate someone pooping)
🤣
I'd love to hear the Roadster through both the Mesa and ENGL cab again, but with both cabs fully mic'ed up. I liked the sound of the ENGL, but I'm pretty sure it was just because of mic placement. Thanks for the great video!
This is just Archetype:Nolly but with real amps
I thought the same exact thing! Life-size! Archetype: Ola!
We need more of these videos Ola! While digital modelers and plug-ins are definitely improving each year (I am overwhelmed with option paralysis by having so many digital toys) these kind of videos are authentic as F***! Thanks
Marshall cabinet is the only one slant and it makes a huge difference
That depends. Meaning yes if your standing by it like Ola. But no if your close miking it.
@@2204JCM Slant cabinets have less bottom end and generally are more trebly. And yes he’s not close miking it in the video only the Mesa cab.
It sounds great to the guitarist but at the same time its cutting off the heads of the people in the front row...
@@2204JCM I have one as well and yes they do have less bottom end cause the enclosure is smaller in litters. It’s not day and night but it makes a difference. I don’t disagree with what you say explaining the why we hear more treble and in the video the mics in the room capture the audience listening point as you explain.
Awesome!
My personal choices would be Engl head+ Mesa cabinet.
That's my sound.
One whole video of Marshall with Engl Cab. That sounded fucking sick. Swedish death metal sick! 🤘
Really like the less gain sound of the Engl but still tight and heavy..with the Engl cab...OLA RULZZ
I like The Mesa cabinet and head sounds the most
Tool guitarist Adam Jones was connecting two amplifiers in serial in the 90s. Could you try and demonstrate that once?... I liked the ENGL amplifier together with the Mesa Rectifier cabinet (8:52) the most. \m/
@Blaze Infernus 😥 I am disillusioned right now. Nobody uses an amplifier as a pre-amplifier...
This is, I think, the f*ing best amp and cab comparo I've seen. I wouldn't have thought that, even with the same speakers, how different the cabnets would sound... and how the same the amp heads did! I learned something today boys... re-thinking some gear here... Metal!!!
0:03 When you forget why you came to the room...
Ola makes the best videos on guitars. Especially for metal fans. End of story🤟🔥🔥
Everybody on this peninsula would hate me if I had that set up.
Very helpful video, thanks for doing this! Personal favorite - Fortin into the Mesa cab. When it's all said and done, the cab and speakers seem to have the most influence over the sound.
That engl sound so good god damn i really want one. I hate being broke
Same here. That's why I use modelers and IRs. The same sound (in a mix) on a budget + you don't have to drag these backbreaking gear around.
