As someone who has never dealt with a distributor cap and rotor before, this video was extremely helpful. Best, most thorough I was able to find. Thank you very much for posting this!
Glad it helped!
4 years late to the party but have to tell you this was a great and thorough video... very much appreciate it.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome job was able to get my son a good lesson. My Dad was a mechanic but now he’s gone. Hard to teach young people to do stuff.
glad it helped
Agree, I can’t get my kid to lay down his cell phone.
One of the better videos I have seen. You actually show the Spark Plugs being taken out instead of just talking about it, and the clip that the wires run thru was good. That looked tricky getting them to snap apart without breaking; especially on a 20 year old vehicle as mine is a '99 Ram 1500 Laramie SLT 2WD.
Numbering the Dist Cap was good. That 5/8 inch socket went down in those 'Heat Shield' sleeves just fine. Some people made videos that were perplexed as how to handle that. Some folks said to take a 22 MM socket and grind it down to a 19MM so it would slip inside those heat shields. LOL< Glad the 5/8 was sufficient. Hope the truck runs well.
Glad it helped
The heat shields just slide out and in with pliers
Thank you. Helped me out with my 5.2 Liter on my 1996 Dodge Ram 1500. We have the same fire order! A Lot of laying across the engine to get to that Distributor Cap but is doable, unlike tune up on my '95 Firebird!
Great video Charles!
Great video... thanks for taking the time.
Glad it helped
I very much appreciated this video. Thank you. (Non-car guy tuning up a 1995 Dodge Ram 1500).
Glad it helped
The 01 I got, old red, she's got over 250k miles n kicking. Like another comment said, its a easy engine to work on👌🏻
Glad to hear that i just bought a 1998 dodge 3500 5.9 liter v8. Gonna make campervan to live in. Mine has 120k Miles.
Till you have to replace the thermostat 🤣
Very nice video. I looked at mine and the first thought was. This is gonna be an ass ache. Thanks
glad it helped
You earned my sub!
Thank you for taking the time to film this. Very helpful
glad it helped
1. pull plug boot.
2 blow out schmoo before removing plug to avoid later disappointment and heartbreak.
Well done brother
Nice job!...great tutorial!!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you buddy
Glad it helped
Great video
Glad it helped
Good info thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
I almost put tape on both ends of the plug wires with the cylinder number on it. Writing the firing order on the cap is a great idea aswell. My #7 cyl looks like your plug on #8
How do you get spark plug rusted in heat shield on 2001 5.7 v 8 with eng in truck
That's why you do one wire and one spark plug at a time so you won't get all screwed up
Litterally gonna save somebody a headache pull 1 plug and plug wire at a time then replace it with the new plug and plug wire then move on to the next 1 you will never get them messed up
Lol right
Its not Rocket science. Its easy to do this. The firing order is on the intake. If u can't follow that. Hire a Real Mechanic to do the job for U. Its 8 wires plus one coil wire. So that is 9 total wires. Stop smoking flaka so u can do it.
I wonder how many times he edited this when he was cursing up a storm??😄
How do I get to the cylinder 7
How do you tell what number the spark plug comes from? Should you fallow the wire from and mark at the plug hole? Or is there a set pattern for the engine? Would the Haynes Repair Manual have that info?
I'm assuming you mean what spark plug wire goes to which plug... There's a firing order cast into the front of the intake. There's also a #1 on the distributor rotor. The easiest way to keep them straight is to do them one at a time so you don't get them mixed up if you're not used to doing them.
I don't even think I owned a spark plug gauge anymore they're always pre-gapped
how do you get the driver side back 2 closest to the firewall(spark plugs)? and how do you get the black style tube looking not the clear plastic pcv valves out i ripped the black one apart and can't get it out. I can't get those 2 plugs, my 5.2l 2001 had the clear plastic pcv valve on the side where the breather element is supposed to be idk how or what this would do to the truck. I usually do work on the outside of the motor and leave the inside for the techs. The idiot who had it before me tightened the ignition coil Phillips head screw in so tight no one not even machine could get them out I am probably going to need to hacksaw the screws off. this is the worst tune up ever, and I have done them before on 20 different cars, probably over 100 times. I miss my K-10 or 15 idr but was 350 and easy to work on.
Excellent video friend!! It is the most complete and informative video I have ever seen, I already subscribed to your channel.
I have a Ram Van 2500 5.9 engine from 2001, your engine looks identical to the one in my truck, I have a problem that no oil reaches both heads, the crankcase is clean, there is oil pressure, but no fluid came out of the the rocker arms, so what I did was take out the oil and add diesel, turn on the engine for 2 minutes and most of the ducts have been uncovered, but one is missing on the driver's side and three on the passenger side, if I disassemble the rocker arms and clean the rods or should I also remove the elevators?
That's hard to say exactly what's causing the issue. BG makes a product for cleaning engines that seems, (from what I've seen) to work pretty well. ua-cam.com/video/kY91Yaweyv0/v-deo.html
@@CharlesAndCars Thanks friend, that was the solution. I took out the oil and put diesel in it, I started the engine and cleaned all the rocker arm ducts, except for three of them, I hope they will also become unclogged over time, they had a lot of carbon that I suppose came off with the tapping of the pneumatic tool.
Anyone realizedthere wasn’t a throttle body air filter gasket?
Yup, working on the same truck and mine ain’t got one either🙄
Just did spark plugs and wires on 01 3.9 v6 280k miles after hours of fighting seized plugs just to start it and it runs worse then it did seems to run fine in park but when in drive no power and stuttering any ideas ?
First thing I would check would be firing order
Charles And Cars got it ending up
Being and old wire guess it got mixed up since it was dark out but thanks .
What is the little white clip plugged in just behind the air filter housing just under the housing clamp??? Mine is cracked and I can't find put what it's called.
Air idle control sensor.
Sweet eagle sound at the end! Good video. Don't you have to set the timing when taking off and putting on new distributor cap?
No, you haven't moved the position of the distributor by changing the cap, so the timing doesn't change.
@@CharlesAndCars interesting! Good to know. A mechanic wanted to charge $500 for tune up on my 2000 dodge 3500.....I was like when the hell a tune up cost as much as a set of tires🤔😠
What happens if one of the little tubes doesn’t want to go back in
Not sure what you mean by the "little tube"
The plug
@@skilledtomato9101 Not exactly sure what you mean... the actual spark plug? or the metal tube around it?
Just did this, replaced the plugs, wires, ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor. Now the truck driving rougher than before the tune up. I assume the rotor isn't set properly?
Make sure you didn't get wires crossed/out of order for some reason
@@CharlesAndCars I've checked 10 thousands times, and its all in the correct order
What do you do if the spark plug comes off the ratchet when trying to pull it out
Not quite sure what you mean... Is the spark plug loose and the socket just doesn't hold onto it?
Or is the hole not so deep because I see you don't need an extention
@@jaydee8285 On this particular engine the spark plugs are not recessed deep at all...
Put a preface of duck tape down in the socket and the spark plug will stick to the tape and pull right out
Fish it out with a magnet
Any idea why my 99 dodge loses power after 60mph?
713tubeit does it ping on freeway and uphill
@@alextreseder6274 If so IAC
Drake Farmer also very likely plenum gasket failure
What size socket you use for spark plugs
5/8
I'm saying giving the hole if its deep what if the spark plugs comes all the way loose but the ratchet couldnt grab hold to it to pull it out like you did...
A spark plug socket will hold onto it... If you just have a "regular" socket... reach down in the hole with a magnet and it will grab the top end of the spark plug and pull it out...
Hire a mechanic. By your comment I don't think u need to touch any part of a engine. This isn't Rocket Science to do a simple tune up.
Scrap life Trash to cash bro shut the fuck up you just here callin everybody stupid when they just trying to fix there truck get a life go do something instead of berating everybody like an asshole
Use an extendable magnet, touch it to the end of the plug and lift out
I have same truck but socket won't fit the spark plugs in engine
spark plugs come in multiple sizes for the actual socket size. May be a different size socket for what you have
Spark plugs used? Doing this soon to my dodge and we have the exact type.
I believe for this truck autolites were in it, so that's what they were replaced with. I think the oem for this truck (Mopar) is made by Champion. In general I try to use the OEM plug.
@@CharlesAndCars thanks, appreciate it.
Why doesn't it have a coil my 01 5.9 does?
It does, it's right in front of the passenger side cylinder head.
The engine is so easy to work on
Where can i find the fuel filter? please
Fuel filter is part of the pump assembly in the fuel tank.
How much was this whole process cost wise
don't remember exactly, but probably somewhere around 100 for parts
How long is that extension
something around 3"
Thank you Charlie sheen 😏
no way heat shields just PULL OUT in the rust belt area
Yep, most of them just fall apart here as well
The only older engine that doesn't 18436572 is Ford
Avoid autolite plugs if you can. I know they're the cheapest but their quality is for s**t. Go with NGK.
Factory are Champions but ...no.
Rethink the dielectric grease as well.
