  • This tune always sounded like a good breath of fresh air to me... isn't that wild? Insaneintherainmusic's jazz cover / remix of Rito Village from Zelda Breath of the Wild.

    I could gush about Breath of the Wild for a very long time... so I'm just going to keep it short and simple! I love the game, and I love its choices with regard to music. When it first came out, people were berating it for its lack of an epic soundtrack... but it just doesn't need one! I wouldn't want the game any other way. Additionally, the lack of music makes the few musical tracks in the game such as this one just that much more special!
    This arrangement was an interesting one to put together! Gotta be honest, I'm not 100% personally satisfied with how this came out, but I am very happy at how well I made this concept work despite the difficult arranging and mixing challenges presented here!
    I really wanted to incorporate an instrument that used tremolo to perform sustained notes in this arrangement, since the original uses a hammered dulcimer! I thought mandolin would be a great choice for this, especially since I've been wanting to feature my friend Alex Heflin on the channel for quite some time now! Additionally, I wanted to incorporate some elements from Snarky Puppy's release "Sylva" (definitely not the first time that the pups are influencing one of my arrangements...) such as a really pronounced and heavy drumbeat as well as the synth bass! Those two things proved to be an enormous challenge in the mixing stage for me. It was difficult to balance the soft sections of the track with the really loud and heavy drum & bass grooves, but I think I came up with a decent compromise!

      Although they have the same melody, the tempo and instruments give each version a very different feel. Dragon Roost is fast and somewhat energetic, while Rito Village is more calm and relaxing. That being said, I love both versions equally.

    I have to say, you're probably my favorite recording musician on UA-cam. From professional to professional, you know what YOU want to do and you don't get bogged down by the opinions or views of others.
    Too many times do we come across a saxophonist on UA-cam, jams, or other events who have really great potential or ability, but only do the usual "Smooth cover" versions of pop songs and not what they really want or can do. Your arrangements are great, your solos are flavorful while not dipping out of the box without taste, you definitely have a strong sense of what your sound is and a grasp on the music theory/sense to make this happen. Plus hot damn you're blazing fast at arranging, it takes me at least a few entire days off from work on one chart until I'm happy with it to have an ensemble play through it start revisions, and that's not even passable until at least a week or two.
    Keep doing what you're doing, because while you don't have nearly enough viewers for what your love and work deserves, your pieces gives me hope that more musicians will come to break the mold and inspiration as an educator and performer.
    When I fell into a deep, deep depression, I pretty much stopped everything music and put my winds, keys, and recording equipment away to collect dust while I just went with the flow of life.
    I kept listening to your arrangements alongside a few mainstays, usual Coltrane, Sanborn and all that, but I wasn't listening to the technicalities like I used to love doing. Eventually (after a 4 or 5 month stint) I started up performing and practicing again because of my fiancee, my students, and honestly, the work you put out. I can always hear the passion and emotion behind the music you play, unlike the constant barrage of pseudo-emotion found in the typical Smooth-pop cover.
    I became a musician because I felt that Music makes a difference in everyone's life, but too much happened and I lost that feeling for a long while. Then, the planets aligned and slapped some sense into me. Thanks for being one of those planets, Carlos. Keep being a better musician than the one you were yesterday.

    I’m a young aspiring jazz musician/composer and I’ve always loved your covers, but this one’s goes especially hard, I’ve genuinely never heard an instrument played with as much emotion as the tenor sax in this cover. Jazz is often seen as fast and furious, but this is really a reminder what the core of jazz really is: raw emotion. Thank you for such a beautiful cover.

    I still think this is your best work. Not to diminish all your other amazing arrangements, but this one stands out even amongst the others. Seriously masterful. The pacing is perfect, and the ending is immaculate. Way to take a song that was originally a loop, and turn it into a ride for the listener.

    I’ve been playing through hollow knight recently, and It’s honestly a really good game so far. While I’m not exactly sure how you could make jazz covers out of its soundtrack, I’m sure you could find a few tracks that would work. Maybe greenpath’s music would work? Anyways, good cover as always!

    Your arrangements always touch and inspire me! It's like you've got a tune for every feeling! While I dig them all, when I feel upbeat (or need a little boost), your Yoshi's Island Medley always hits the spot. When I need a bit of courage, your arrangement of Snake Eater always makes me feel like I could punch a bear in the face! And this arrangement gives me a sense of victory and completion - like it's all worked out, or will work out in the end!
    Also, was that a bit of a reference at 2:15 to the groove Snarky Puppy has in "The Curtain"? If so, killer job! I love your ability to take elements and ideas and make them your own!
    *Edit* At 5:42 the piano progression is also a reference from "The Curtain" right? Absolutely stunning! I knew I've heard that from somewhere before!
    You are... Insane! ;)

    • @insaneintherainmusic
      @insaneintherainmusic  6 років тому

      Thanks a bunch, man! The Curtain definitely had some inspiration on this one! The 5:42 piano progression is actually a reference to "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" by Herbie Hancock, which is one of my favorite standards out there!

      Wow, I feel silly! Tell Me a Bedtime Story was one of the songs that really rooted my love for jazz. I should have recognized that, but hey, I'll definitely not have trouble discerning that now. It's great to see your roots influencing your works!

Even if it's not your "best", it's still pretty dang good, especially the saxophone choir at around 4:48; love when you do that. Where does one learn to improve his or her improvisational skills? Out here in the highschool world it feels almost like I get nowhere. I can hear an idea and want to relay it but a lot of times I simply can't without copying it exactly and then maybe transcribing it first to learn it in other keys.
    I joined a college jazz group to surround myself in hopefully good improvisers to maybe help myself out that way. But everywhere I look online just says to transcribe. Which I've only just gotten into but haven't dedicated much time to.
    Edit* the college jazz group doesn't have class until tomorrow, I enrolled a few weeks ago however.
    Edit** The class is a 3 hour class that occurs once a week until the end of the semester.

      "I simply can't without copying it exactly and then maybe transcribing it first to learn it in other keys."
      This. Learning to play jazz is a process that takes decades - improvising is really accessing a bunch of material that you have practiced again and again. That's why it's important to transcribe material that you really want to be able to play!

    • @Splarff
      @Splarff 6 років тому

    • @AlexHeflin
      @AlexHeflin 6 років тому

      Yup! And there are really no shortcuts. Practice and time are the only things that will get you there!
      I figured that out way too late, but I practice every day, and hopefully I'll play something I like one day.
