Pat convincing all of his world class musician friends to play these songs from my childhood and making them sound like they were standards gives me life
The Consouls (who have collaborated with Pat) are also very good at it but get less exposure, being in the Southern Hemisphere. Having said that, Pat's playing is in the stratosphere!
I do feel like this music reaches a larger audience because we can all relate to sentimentality (haha in a sentimental mood) and nostalgia but not everyone is into jazz because admittedly it’s a hard genre to get into (it took my years lol) but this is a perfect bridge to connect those outsiders into possibly the most creative genre of music ever
I love how Patrick Bartley, one of the best living sax players today, pulled up to the gig and was like “I’m playing Super Mario Galaxy today or I’m not playing.” What an absolute legend. Keep doing god’s work man.
Gosh it’s incredibly refreshing to hear a jazz video game cover that doesn’t sound like an artificial jazz video game cover. Like the respect to the music, and the jazz culture is paramount. Kind of gives me vibes of someday my prince will come, probably because it’s also in 3/4. Absolutely amazing work! Edit: lol it literally says in the description that it’s inspired by “someday my prince will come” which is probably my favorite standard.
Nice catch on the SMPWC connection. 8-bit music theory did a whole ep. on this tune and how it is somewhat 'Disney-like'. Glad that we are reaching a point where our young jazz stars today are doing with VGM what the stars of the past did with Disney and other pop tunes.
I feel like even people who like videogame music are tempted to treat it as sort of a second class separate thing compared to non videogame music. However, good music is good music, and this cover proves just how amazing it can be it you give it all the respect it deserves.
Check out Pats group "J-Music Ensemble" they have some truly great tracks, mostly based on video game music (but also other Japanese music too!). Their Persona covers, and the entire Brooklyn Sakura festival 2019 set they played are some of their standouts!
I love how Emmett goes really wide at 2:29, with Wynton Kelly's groove on Someday. It gives the solo great contrast and ties it back to its inspiration. I feel like jazz standards change with the times, and this performance shows how well the Nintendo catalogue could contribute to a new generation of standards.
Its been forever since I've played through it, if memory serves the tune gets introduced one instrument at a time as you power up the observatory right? Or something like that?
It's like Miles Davis, John Costa, and Father Christmas all got together, played some Mario Galaxy and in a moment of serendipity each saying to one another "Hey, let's jam to that", then inscribed the result of that jam session across the stars. This is phenomenal; a perfect chemistry. The veritable onion of layers offered up here make this worth listening to over and over knowing full well you'll find something new each time you listen.

Very high level sax player. Really enjoyed this performance. Super good. Melodie’s werent boring jazz stuff and had enough contemporary licks to keep me interested. That sax player is outstanding. Nice sound on the trumpet. Piano had some really nice licks. Everybody played well. Bass player hit a lick with the trumpet player that was great. Well done everybody. High level stuff
Ever since listening to this music 2 years ago, I have come back here many, many time. This is a timeless work that i'm sure future generations will be as blessed as I am to listen to this artistry displayed by all musicians here.😊😊
I agree 100%! 2020-2021 era Live at Emmet’s performances are going to be this generation’s Live at the Village Vanguard, just simply as good as it gets.

Beautiful cover. Love me some jazzy VGM - it’s such a wonderful musical niche introduced to me by my kids - but I take credit for discovering The Consouls and J-Music Ensemble to introduce back to my boys ;)
Heck ya! My other two fav jazzy VGM cover groups are 8 Bit Big Band, and the solo act, Insaneintheeainmusic. Carlos from Insane has been at it all through music school so his arrangements only get richer the longer he's been at it :). His "Ghost Trick" theme is one of my fav instrumental prices, and I don't even know the game! :)
@@cooldebt ya, just saw his announce vid yesterday hah. Whatever he does I hope he feels good personally doing it. But more free jams on UA-cam is never bad :)!!

great performance! of course it's inspired from miles davis' someday my prince will come. 8-bit music theory did a video comparing rosalina in the observatory to a buncha disney princess "i want" songs (including someday my prince will come) and classical pieces from the romantic period. these pieces have amazing similarities that allow musicians to adapt them in similar ways, just like we saw here. great job, guys, and may the stars shine down on you. ;))
