- Before the days of quarantine, our JammJam live events hosted some of the nation’s most impactful musicians for incredible nights of unfiltered, collaborative raw convergence in the round as the who’s who of the music industry enjoyed the music from the packed sidelines. Last year, the incomparable Jacob Collier took the JammJam stage with his rendition of Michael Jackson’s hit song “Human Nature” for a special night honoring the legendary Quincy Jones. Today, the performance has been made available for us to reminisce that in-person, packed house concert sensation and continuing to remind us what a brilliant and skilled artist Jacob is.
Jacob’s latest album Djesse Vol. 3 received three 2021 GRAMMY Award nominations, including Album Of The Year. He was also nominated for Best R&B Performance: "All I Need" (with Mahalia & Ty Dolla $ign), and Best Arrangement, Instrumentals & Vocals: "He Won't Hold You" (Feat. Rapsody). The British musician, producer, songwriter and arranger now has a remarkable seven career GRAMMY Nominations, including four GRAMMY Award wins. Earlier this year, Collier earned two GRAMMY Awards for arrangements from his Djesse Vol. 1 and Djesse Vol. 2 albums.
At this JammJam, the event was filled wall-to-wall with music royalty such as Quincy Jones himself and Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy Chairman. Jacob took the stage to perform an impromptu solo version of “She’s Out of My Life,” mesmerizing everyone in the room before delivering his beautiful rendition of “Human Nature.” He then started an extended jam session that combined the international musical talents of Alfredo Rodriguez (Cuba), Munir Hossn (Brazil), Eric Zayne (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Elmo Lovano (US).
2:18 Jacob asks drummer Donald Barrett "Can you get me a back beat?" and the jam elevates

What instrument do you play?
Jacob: "The crowd"
Pulki Pulki
lols precise
And Keyscape ;)
I believe the answer to that question is simply "Yes"
Literally every jc live video has this comment, along with the "yes" version. Painfully unoriginal/cringy.
His vocal bass is so clear it's crazy
He was a gold medalist in his grade 8 Vocals😎
💜
Much love Q!
Sei un mito zi
@@danmahalo man thats from 4 years ago you gotta keep putting out music and inovating your sound
@@jammcard hi there can you release an compilation album on like music streamers.. or cd even.. with songs like these some of Cory Henry, Quincy Jones etc etc that will be great
LEGEND! Thank you for everything Quincy!
What a gift it is to have this young man on the planet. Unparalelled
💛
💛
A true light in 2020
Agreed
Oh mhen..!!
This earth has more to offer....!
Its amazing that Jacob does not try to have all attention on him, but rather loves to involve and incorporate others to enjoy the music with him. You can even tell by the way he closes with "you sounded beautiful". He is a lover of music, not a hungry for fame or attention
Music is a global community language. Love it
That’s what a narcissist do. Best of the best can never be a narcissist.
He gets mature
I met him in person and his humility is uncanny, spontaneous. His talent is so self evident the last thing he would use his energy on doing would be to pose, or show himself. He is an instrument to grace.
@@fatimaWr2 Most musicians are narcists. They perform music for applause.
You get into jazz and it is a "my dick is bigger than yours" competition all the time.
That is why I left the jazz scene a long time ago...there is a moment when you realize it is not about the music anymore, it is about showing off how many plates you can juggle at the same time.
Having said that, Jacob has restored my faith in music, as in music can be rich and still be music.
I always wondered what it would be like to live in the past and experience the rise of Bach or Mozart. This is the time and the name is Collier.
Agree, what a gift 🤗🎁
Indeed Indeed Indeed.
The man is otherworldly.
Truer words have not been spoken.
He may have the best ear since Mozart!
Scat-singing a Michael Jackson cover is not Mozart
So that was how the events went before the quarantine
Oh yes. Hard to picture these days, but we will all be back soon, and we'll celebrate with a JammJam the moment we can!
Back in the before time...
Love how he always involves his audiences. Music is such a universal language and seeing everyone just start jamming with him was beautiful. Great dude with an unparalleled passion for music.
When it comes to Jacob, the world is his band. We're fortunate to have him.
His musicianship has inspired a whole generation of youth to play instruments. Thank you
I was worried talent was fading In music. This kid is a messiah for music. Amazing to know there are still artists who could jam! Refreshing.
Name some classic songs he's made?
Talent in music has never faded. It's just talent is not part of the business anymore. It's not about that anymore. It's about looks, sexuality, views, and the false sense of greatness in overproduced music videos. Where would this guy fit in that scenario?
@@estebanb7166 you don't have to make songs to be an excellent figure in the music world
@@kobsy7074 Ok
it wasn't fading jacob is just hoarding all of it
I love how Eric Persing, the guy that literally created Keyscape is tweaking his Rhodes patch for him as he’s playing it!
I know right! I saw a dude mess with the macbook and I thought 'what punk a$$ has the audacity to touch........oh right...'
Fun fact: 4:55 the drummer drops his stick and his reaction is priceless, anyways he keeps the goddamn groove moving
It's almost like he chose to replace the stick.
Good catch haha!
I hope this dude doesn't get corrupted by the game. Much love to Jacob and Sir Quincy.
Quincy is with him so that answers the corruption aspect
He's a 4time Grammy award winner. 2 in 2017, another 2 I think 2020. He seems more with every year that passes by. But I hear you.
Respect to everyone that doesn't have their phone out for this
Eric persing is standing right behind him singing his heart out. Thats crazy. Eric created the most iconic sounds for roland and made omnisphere. And jacobs using keyscape. Another one of Eric's products.
Jacob's favorite instrument is the human voice and I am totally on that as a beatboxer.
I love the way he uses the audience as part of his band and performance! It spawned him with everyone in the room
Beatboxing should be banned.
@@jacobabel92 check out Tom Thum
@@KentoSky I don't get why you would want to listen to a guy imitating other instruments. It's impressive but useless.
@@jacobabel92 It's fun to be able to demonstrate the rhythm you want on the fly without instruments.
This what happens when you have too many cool people in the room, they were missing out. Jacob is a treasure 🤙🏿🙌🏿
100%, just watched the 1st 3 minutes of this and this has to be the worse crowd i have ever seen at a JC gig. Too cool for school and these sad people are totally missing the point about what music is all about. Just go home lol
@@soulcentral2462 Why cant they have it any way they like? I know it can be hard to play to a crowd that don't react the way we want it, still it is not their responsibility to please us as we don't have to please them. As long as they don't do anything that will disturb the concert they have a right to be there and it is worth appreciating that they gave their time, attention and money to hear the music.
"Up a semi-tone!" lol
Eric Persing standing behind like a proud poppa grinning from ear to ear at 6:01 with Jacob killing it on keyscape
shame to see the amount of faces too concerned about what others think to just get involved. Props to Jacob for throwing passion and not self obsession into the music industry
The omnisphere guy is right beind jacob to the left lol
Yep. Eric Persing. And Jacob is playing Keyscape. :)
It happened with Snarky Puppy. It happened with the later chapters of David Crosby's career. And now it's happening with Jacob Collier. An artist I barely knew about turns out to have a treasure trove of delightful music that I get to hear for the first time. In the last couple days I've seen the one in London, the MIT special, the trio with a female artist and John Mayer, and now this. Life is good. If music is magic, Jacob Collier is a Gandalf-class wizard.
I would say jacob is a student of quincy that our generation needs
I wonder how many other performances are in the vault waiting to be released
4:30 lol the keyscape guy adjusting the direct/mechanical mix while jacob's playing
I noticed Eric Persing, too! He's having the time of his life, seeing his baby used by one of the greats of our time.
Yeah Keyscape Gang !
Someone else had some heavy goosebumps listening to this?
Hell of a drummer! Beast at the feeling and understandment of Jacob's genius! Cheers to him!
You know it’s a good video when you unconsciously like it before even watching
Another Quincy Jones discovery. Only the “Q”!!
LOL that spectrasonics guy is everywhere!!
That's Eric Persing, before Spectrasonics he designed the preset sounds for the Roland D-50 and JD800 among others, so he's kind of a legend in synth circles. If you've heard a pop/R&B song from anywhere between 1986 and 1995 it's likely you've heard some of his sounds.
Michael Jackson's style totally instruments and vocals
I think this guy is a revelation of our time 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
One of a few
When you start singing along with the harmonies you know you’re listening to Jacob Collier.
Quincy Jones LOVES this video... with a purple heart :-)
2:13 - Oooh I like that Quincy says
This guy is incredible!
Amazing!
Every time I find something where Jacob is and I listen to him
I’m always amazed by his great talent!
If u gather all the best musicians in the world in one single guy, u get Jacob!
Probably the most talented musician on the planet, and he’s only going to get better and influence more people in the coming decades. The prodigy that stands on his shoulders 30 years from now will be unbelievable.
When a musical GENIUS says sing. You better fucking sing💪🏾
The visitors of Jacob's performances must present a BCM diploma on entrance
remind me of bobby mcferrin. two of my fav artist!
Thank God for Jacob Collier💆🏽♀️
This oddly feels like an anime where Jacob is the protagonist
For all of his aptitude and genius, it would seem that one of Jacob's greatest pleasures is to make music as accessible, collaborative and as non-elitist as possible.
Thank you God for this man, his talent, and more importantly his heart.
HE DID THIS SONG IN TOKYO YESTERDAY! It was beyond amazing.
and this is what you get when you combine a man with something he loves and dedicates himself to .. as many others before him amazing... i can't wait to see what jacob will become in future, he already got a grammy at a fairly young age this dude is killing it already
2:18 Donald Barrett comes in with that deep pocket! 🥁
People energised at ‘why, why’ part, and that’s really a human nature
Hard to find the right words to describe this kind of innovative genius!
He's one of the greatest in the world!
So beautiful to see Quincy Jones and one of his great successors Jacob Collier!
Don’t think Quincy could play like Jacob
I was not expecting to cry when I clicked on this video
Besides the amazing (dare I say, other-worldly) musicality of this young man, it is a joy to see how (one) he brings his audience into his music, and (two) he does not have that I'm-something-special-but-you-aren't attitude that a lot of musicians have.
The boy is a genius and yet he is simply happy to be doing what he is doing.
The harmonies are soaring, yet at no time we feel anything even close to "let me show you how amazing I am".
Mic EQ is excellent
This is not Jacob’s audience. He should repeat this with us , the Djesse family.
But Jacob still celebrates it, cause in his head, he hears and feels the audiences part
This is like watching a painter make a painting with sounds! He’s incredibly talented with his art of music production:)
Like bobby mcferrin live
Amazing!!! It’s so lame to see the crowd look at their phones rather than live the experience they are missing.
Modern people are idiots.
Collier congregation! RIP MJJ & Happy 90 Q!
You are not able to measure how lucky you are to have Jacob Collier around and enjoy these wonderful encounters. I have to settle for listening to his music because I live in Argentina and, although he has already come twice, I am from a city very far from the capital and I could never afford that luxury. Enjoy it, we are contemporaries of a future music hero.
He hit us with the quintuplets at the end there, of course
Even a crowd of musicians cant grasp the supreme musical genius that is Jacob Collier
If fans of Jacob were in the same room the vocals would be very different
Is it me or the drummer did not up a semi-tone?
Underrated comment
maybe he shifted up a microsecond
I think he's slightly off a semi
in his defense, his IEMs weren't in...
If you didn't understand this comment, go to 4:42 ...
Jacob really brings everyone together.
One of my favorite JammJams! Missing these nights so much
